blueAgent: Just wanted to touch on this. You think that slavery stopped only because of whites? I suppose the blacks that fought against it never happened? These uprisings didn't occur? arbitter: No, I asked because you're peddling the same ridiculous rhetoric that they do. Including the terms, like: "blaming whitey". The only people that I've ever heard use the term "whitey" are white people. It's like they give y'all a "How to Hate Effectively" handbook. Lol. How did you get here? Through a link from Stormfront, abi? Abeg, go back there joor. You can't even effectively back up your arguments... |

blueAgent: Abeg, stop making things up. The U.S. Did not pay money to the British after the Revolutionary War. They paid money to countries in Europe due to debt that they accurued fighting against the British. Once again, you aren't citing any sources to back up your ridiculous claims. https://history.state.gov/milestones/1784-1800/loans Also, if the Haitian debt was so "justified", why did France abolish it last year. You're foolish. |

blueAgent: Your point about the origins of "slavery" in the broad sense of the word has nothing to do with my points. I stated that the United States was built on the backs of enslaved people. The compensation is for undue treatment and unpaid labor. Read "The Case for Reparations" in the Atlantic to see the cultural and socioeconomic implications. Also, indentured servitude or "slavery" in West Africa was not o the same scale as the chattel slavery of the TransAtlantic slave trade. It cannot be compared. This also does not absolve the U.S from any wrongdoings. Wrongdoings that resulted in this country being where it is now. Banks and colleges and institutions that were built by blacks. Black people being traded in the finance market. Our towns and economic systems torn down, generational wealth stripped away. A "sorry" doesn't cut it. It doesn't cut it in any other world system, it shouldn't now. 1 Like |

arbitter: Cite your sources please! Show me where the shooting has been debunked. If you don't bother to read the source material that I provided, you can't adequately provide an educated rebuttal. It's just your own hate filled rant complete with conservative ramblings based on no actual facts. You've shown that you're not qualified to actually have this discussion with me. Do your homework. |

arbitter: Wow! Really?! To speak to your first point, reparations are not owed because "free money" but because this country was built on the black of blacks. That includes hundreds of years of slavery and 100 years of the black codes and Jim Crow which stripped African Americans of millions of dollars of generational wealth. Did you know that the US pays reparations to Holocaust survivors to this day? Did you know that the Japanese and the Irish received a form of reparations? Did you know that slave owners receiver reparations because they LOST slaves? What happened to our 40 acres and a mule? It's not entitlement, it is recognition for hard work that was done and has been done for decades now. We have been toiling in this country. We built this country for free, not just slavery but continually so asking for what is deserved is not entitlement. We are not even the only community in the diaspora bringing this up. Read this please if you want to learn facts instead of spewing the nonsense that you're peddling: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/06/the-case-for-reparations/361631/ As for #BlackLivesMatter turning into "anti-white bullshit" , show me where BLM resulted in violence against anyone and I'll show you were Black Lives Matter activists were SHOT by violent white supremacists while they were peacefully protesting. "Chants" are not gun shots. There is also PLENTY of support for BLM, I know white families who have BLM signs in their yards! http://m.startribune.com/several-people-were-shot-near-black-lives-matter-protest-site/353121881/ As for straw man "black on black crime" arguments, I'll leave something here for you as well but since when is a police officer killing an unarmed person equivalent to a criminal killing someone?!? Also, what about white on white crime? Most crime in intraracial, that "argument" is null and void. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/10/black-lives-matter-loury-mcwhorter/409117/ What follows next in your comments is so asinine that I won't even address it. You're SO out of touch that it's almost laughable. I can see that you spend a lot of time in white conservative spaces because of your liberal use of the word "whitey" and your ill regard towards "white liberals". Are you sure that you're not a racist white man in disguise? I've only heard white people say "whitey" when they think that they're parroting black people. The point is that we will CONTINUE to speak out when there is an injustice because if we never did, we still wouldn't be able to VOTE! And your punk azz would have never been able to come here to spit on our efforts because the Immigration Act of 1965 allowed immigrants and students from countries other than Europe the opportunity to come here. Prior to that, it was a no go. So thank those whining black people and those stupid liberal whites for that. http://www.soundvision.com/article/how-the-civil-rights-movement-affected-us-immigration The Oscars talk is not my cup of tea, I'm not interested in begging but there is a real issue. In the last 87 years or so, there have been fewer than 10 black actors who have won. Latinos and Asians haven't won a single award in 10 years. This is about people of color, not just black ones. Not saying anything doesn't help anyone, look at the Native Americans. http://www.economist.com/blogs/prospero/2016/01/film-and-race As for the "N-Word", please watch this. He explains it beautifully: https://www.facebook.com/chaka.clarke1/videos/10206858844043076/ Just a small point on Affirmative Action: There was a Haverford alum on a panel once, my alma mater. He is a black lawyer, very distinguished. He had a classmate at Haverford, who then became a law school classmate. They ended up interviewing for the same job and the black man got it. The white man later, said that he felt like his job was taken because of Affirmative action... Never mind the fact that he and the guy did undergrad and law school together. His implicit bias made him feel like he was somehow more entitled to the job that something was stripped from him. I don't understand such intellectually lazy assumptions. Affirmative Action is needed because people are idiots that can't see past their privilege. Smh... 2 Likes |

If you read each post, it's clear that you are beyond foolish. I gave a well articulated and olive branch-like response and you responded with hate and ignorance. You're not worth any further response from me. I don't rejoice at the death of others. The type of person that you are is clearly displayed. I pity you. I'm finished with you now. wytecat: |

wytecat: You're wrong. "Civil-rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., whose birthday is celebrated today, was a staunch believer of the pan-African movement, which was dedicated to gaining independence for African nations, and promoted unity of Black people worldwide, Whitaker said. As part of that ideology, King supported welcoming African immigrants to the U.S. Opening the door for millions The 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, which was passed by Congress and signed by President Lyndon Johnson, was largely inspired by the principles of the civil-rights movement, said Thomas J. Davis, an ASU history professor. In the first half of the 20th century, most immigrants came from Europe, he said. Before that, most of the Africans who came to the United States came as slaves. "The act was seen as a way to end discrimination in the immigration system, as an issue of fundamental fairness," Davis said. The act abolished a national quota system that allotted the vast majority of available visas to European immigrants and gave very few visas to immigrants from Asia and Africa. The act allowed immigrants to come to the U.S. based on their skills and family reunification instead of their country of origin, and therefore opened the door for larger numbers of immigrants to voluntarily come to the U.S. from Africa. It also set aside visas specifically for refugees." If you're not from here, some times it's hard to understand that the systems here are racial, not cultural. Meaning, being Nigerian does not protect you from instances that occur here. That's all that I am going to say, because as an African American, frankly this discussion was very jarring and disheartening. I agree, there is ignorance on both sides that hinders our ability to connect. No, we are not the same culturally, but African Americans are Africans by blood. I have friends that are African (from Cameroon, Ghana, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Liberia, S. Africa, etc) African American, Caribbean (Haitian, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, Bajan ), etc and we all see ourselves as black. Meaning African as well as products of our individual countries cultures. I'm in a relationship with a Nigerian man. We love each other and interact with each other with no malice (despite past interactions or misconceptions that we have had) because we have constructive conversations with each other. You cannot base your thoughts about an entire culture on some people that you may have met or encounters that you may have had. However, it's up to you to decide what you want to do. You can be glad that my people are being murdered, that's on you. I won't wish the same on you. Please excuse any typos that I have here, I need to go back to studying for an exam, so I won't take the time to proofread. Good day. 2 Likes |
Culture / Re: Child Marriage In Igboland: As Exposed By Chinua Achebe In Things Fall Apart. by HCGrad08: 4:11pm On Jul 27, 2015 |
In many cultures, marriage at a young age was not unusual. I'm African American and that practice was normal up until recent times. For example, my great aunt (who is still alive) married her husband when she was 15 years old. This was in the American South, and it wasn't seen as taboo. My great great Grandmother, already had 9 kids by the time that she was 28, so I can only assume that she married when she was a teen as well. Just sharing a thought from a different culture/experience. |
