Media platforms must diligently investigate issues before making a frenzy from them…I’m not surprised it’s fake news since though! |

It’s most unfortunate and regrettable that one’s colleague will put one in harms way just to settle personal scores. |

Most parts of the country, especially the North has been negatively affected by worsening insecurity occasioned by activities of illegal armed groups and religious extremist who are constantly engaged in armed robbery, arson, banditry, kidnapping, murder, among others. This has led to lose confidence in the government by its citizens who live in perpetual fear. The increasing activities of these illegal armed groups in the northern region have continued to elicit reactions from stakeholders who have advanced several inputs to government for addressing this menace. The National Assembly was also not left out as both chambers of the house have debated on this insecurity. Government on its part has continued to increase it deployment of military hardware and military operations all in a bid to nip this threat in the bud. Successes have been recorded but the threat refused to fade owing to factors including poor terrain, inadequacy of weapons for the military, among others. The most worrisome amidst this prevailing security challenges is the exploitation of the situation by self centered and bitter politicians who engage in nonconstructive criticism of the government all in a bid to score cheap political gain. They have now turned the situation to a franchise where they recruit and induce youths to agitate both on social media platforms and in the streets. This has led to the spring of groups such as the Coalition of Northern Groups(CNG), which wassolelyestablished by politicians for organizing paid protests against the present government. They engage in cheap propaganda through sponsoring petitions against policies and programs of government. This is exactly what happened with the #BringBackOurGirls campaignerswho claimed to be agitating for the rescue of the Chibok Girls that were abducted by Boko Haram terrorists but later abandoned the cause after the campaign was no longer lucrative. A similar plot is about to play out once again with the CNG under the guise of the #BringBackOurBoys campaign regarding the abduction of secondary students in Kankara LGA, Katsina State. The CNG are trying their best to gain relevance with this unfortunate incident. They are heavily financed by politicians, especially the opposition to discredit government. The CNG needs to truly understand that Nigeria deserves better than a bunch of idle citizens filled with spite, working to further divide the nation instead of uniting us together. They need to realize the negative impact their activities could have on the nation-building efforts conducted by legitimate activist’s groups. The CNG must be dissuaded from their current destructive path and resist inciting unnecessary negative reactions from the general public. As citizen from northern Nigeria, I must admit that government needs to up its game of protecting lives and properties which is its major constitutional responsibility. This should be done through a holistic review of the security architecture to meet up with the challenges confronting the nation. Increased budgeting and the establishment of State policing among others should be considered. With issues like poverty, illiteracy, lack of political will, underdevelopment among the causes of insecurity, the government cannot continue to work in isolation towards combating insecurity, relevant stakeholders especially at the grassroots must be engaged if government is ready to evolve lasting solutions to the menace. Hassan Mustapha writes from Kaduna.

I commend the author for penning this down. Our traditional institutions must be awake to their core mandate of maintaining peace and tranquility. Where they fail or become complicit in the conduct of criminality, they should be dethroned and prosecuted. |
