Business / Re: Why Are All Our Products Imported? by igbonla(m): 5:34pm On May 22, 2008
The problems are too many to list, but the bottom line is that it is cheaper to import. And we will keep depending on foreigners until we get things right in our country.

God bless Nigeria.

ayomifull:

I have worked with the NPA and when i read about getting rid of corruption in Nigeria i wonder if this can ever be a reality. Corruption has eaten deep into the country that it exist everywhere and believe it or not there are things you can't possibly get through without bribe in Nigeria. This is not being negative its the fact. Fighting and claiming right at times is a waste of time and will in no way put an end to this bribing menace.

Few weeks ago i was in front of legislative quaters in Abuja and wanted to drive in but the car was not allowed in because according to the police at the door the car is not an official car, i called the senator to see how we could get in and he asked us to 'dash' him something and he will let us in and with just N50 the unofficial car was let in.

A friend who works with one of the governors told me her colleaque had to report her boss to the gov for harrasing him sexually which she can not agree to because she is married and to her uttermost shock the govt told her point blank that that is the order of the day and that everyone including himself is quilty of it. So where will she turn to now and who will she report to? So what are we talking about? only God can heal Nigeria of curruption and bribe infact, i doubt if He can. (God forgive me i definitely know there is nothing you can not do)

Have you given up? Will corruption stop if you continue to give N50? Do you want to join them if you can't beat them? Is your friend's colleague sleeping with her boss now since the gov said it's the order of the day? Is that her choice between resigning and sleeping to keep her job?

It is the choice we all make that will determine if the corruption will slow down or keep ravaging us. Will you join us by not offering bribe? Are you ready to suffer some discomfort to help fight this battle?

Unfortunately, this is not the fight for God; He has given us the grace. Let's go use it.

We can reduce corruption if we make the right choices.

God bless Nigeria.

subice:

Sad but true. And our current leaders couldn't care less about doing something to sort it out.

This is a battle for you and I, not the leaders. There has to be a giver for the corruption link to be complete. We can help by not giving; tough but achievable.

denony:

After they confirmed, I prepare again getting there, to get a burding pass, they started checking one thing or the other but couldn't find what they will make money with, noiw they started with my hotel reservation, which was suppose to expire the next day because of the delay, to my surprise they refused me a burding pass, that i should pay N10k before they will give me burding pass, I just did that to be on a safe side.

My fellow nairalanders could you imaging that the more you meet each group the more you pay, the one that stamped my passport ask for money i tolf her i have no naira again but dollar she saud am not serious, she started demanding for the dollar, it required prayer before my passport was stamped, getting to the next group he started asking me the amount of dollars an travelling with i was marveled, time is only remaining ten minutes to departure, this man held me for 7 of the ten minutes and i have to drop 2k, then face the last two groups with 1k each, my brother its like hell.

They are really in business there, (You must drop something from their superious to the lower) It's so ridiculous.
(Something must be done in order to stop this mess, though i it's an experience on how to handle them next time.

All of them are hungry men and women, they don't care if you miss the flight, all they care if the money they are demanding for. - hiiiiiiiiseeeeeeeeeee

You paid because you really wanted to make that trip. What if you forfeited the trip simply because you wont pay bribe? How much sacrifice are you willing to make for the battle against corruption? We can keep shouting and screaming but those guys will keep demanding and collecting the bribes until we start refusing to give.

oYaTo:

omo denony i feel your story o! those guys are f^ckin mad! Abeg can u give a few pointers on how to handle them, because i'm travellin soon and i'm not prepared to shell out a dime for any damn person!

this leaves a sour taste in my mouth!

Simply (politely) refuse to give; let them know you don't give and watch your luggage properly. You do have a choice between dining with the devil (short or long spoon) and starving to death. What choice would you make?

God bless Nigeria.

@novice1

Some ideas you can use:

Don't trust anybody anywhere when it comes to money (small or big) so I operate by certain rules. I use ATM card to book local flights make purchases with checks (pick up items later) or I count the money, notes after notes into your hands.
I hate arguments and wont put myself in the line of fire with any frustrated and desperate person.

It pays to purchase tickets online these days (especially with AERO and Virgin), should be a good way to avoid touts, arguments over money and all. I don't fly Chachangi and the others - have had to travel by road from Abuja to Kaduna and back to avoid this airline (rather than fly Lagos to Kaduna with Chachangi).

It is a good idea to get names of airlines officials and let them know you will be making an official report later. It may not work all the time but is a good tactic.

The international airport is another game entirely, one of the challenges I face has been with taking foodstuffs out (no matter how small). I have always played on their emotions by saying "it will be unfair visiting our naija people abroad and not take some naija food to remind them of home". My fall back plan is to threaten to abandon the food for them. It has worked well so far and I pray I continue to get lucky.

The NDLEA guy knows he has no rights to do what he did but played on your desperation and ignorance. Sorry about that. Only the immigration officials should handle your passport but many people don't know this. You should learn how to politely decline handing over your passport to the other guys when next you are there.

My major issue with the Intl airport is the long queue to clear immigration when departing. I was once on that queue for about 3hrs but I get to airport very early these days. Hope they get to expand that section to take care of the congestion.

God bless Nigeria.
Politics / Re: 'My Power Project Story' By Olusegun Obasanjo by igbonla(m): 3:36pm On May 18, 2008
Unfortunately, our emotions have gotten in the way of the beautiful discussions on the power probe.

Should we accept that protocol should be discarded simply because we are so pained with the discoveries at the probe panel? Is it then ok if policemen continue to use force to arrest citizens or arrest the wife to get the husband to come out of hiding?
I fully support getting former office holders to give account of their stewardship (whether clerks or Presidents) and I don't think this should be difficult to achieve if we stop playing politics with all of our decisions.

I believe in strengthening the apparatus of government to function as established and also looking forward to the day when our policemen will be saying 'sir' to citizens while reading their offences to them.

The bashing must continue until we can get some respite from the darkness that has enveloped the nights.

God bless Nigeria.

Get the exit door at this pity party and step out into the world of challenges.

No need having regrets except if you are joining the labour market. Do you know the story of the guy that was denied a job because he could not provide an email address?

Stop limiting yourself and get to work!

Just wanted to appreciate the contributions of Afam, Debosky, Sky blue and some other dudes here. The discourse would have helped some people gain more understanding on the power sector probe.

I believe we can use the State apparatus to track the money paid and confirm any fraud for proper action but my prayer is for Yar Adua to drive the ongoing projects to completion ASAP.

I look forward to the day our media will do better job of investigative journalism and provide  information that will help drive corruption down and move the country forward rather than reporting to satisfy sectional and political interests.

God help Nigeria

We share in your grief, it is well.

Stick to your initial plan.

Livestock is one of the wonder stocks on NSE. Nigerian Wire Cable is another one. Factory under lock and key but with rumours of turn around etc for the past two years also. Not that much info is available.

Thought the lock was removed sometime last year with the take over by some investors? Not sure the machines have been cranked yet.

@Kosovo

This is an irresponsible statement. Please speak for yourself! I agree that HITV is probably enjoyed at present by those who want to spend so much time watching football, but to say Nigerians as a whole will never do anything meaninful is grossly irresponsible.

This forum was started by a Nigerian and if it is not meaningful then what the hell are you doing here?

At a point in our existence when we are saying that it has never been better being Nigerain than now and we are trying our danmest best to rise above the way we have been painted negatively, there comes such a denouncement from someone whose thoughts must be surely peurile

I guess you were not bouyant enough to afford DSTV 10years ago so you are unaware of what their beginings were like.

If HITV misses the mark some other Nigerian company will get it right and God knows they don't need filthy declarations from those whose thinking has surely become redundant. Pssssssssssssst

May you richly be blessed!

@ Poster, this is stating the obvious, is your boyfriend pope john paul that he will be watching a girl in his crib for one week without anything happening or something going on between trhem? It happened to me once with my roomate getting so close to my boyfriend that she even used to go to his house and sleep there giving different reasons, eventually it became confirmed they had been dating for 6 months and that was a 4 year old relationship i had. What that taught me is that a guy and a girl don't just get close without reason and with my fiance now he knows that i can not stand other girls so its both of us together most of the time to avoid a repeat.
What am i saying to you, its obvious something is going down and if u really want your guy back go and clarify issues.if not take a walk.
MY two Cents.

Ekobase/Seun, you have heard the truth of this matter from Aproko with due respect to all other opinions expressed on this issue. But please permit me to add that TM sometimes span a year, this talk of 15k or 20k will not fly. The folks telling you these will just file the name, collect your money and move on. This stage could be likened to 20%. There is a handy example involving Virgin Soft drinks and one other Virgin bla bla at the Federal High Court Lagos Annex (I will not say more because the case is still on going). Now what happened was that the other guy did know that Richard Brandson's brands already has something similar to HIS fully "registered". I guess he contacted somebody who probably did name search, file the name collected his money and moved on. From my own view, Richard Brandson's brands will win the case. I am taking pain to say all these so that you will not run into similar error. My advice: walk up to a Lawfirm where they practice T.M and give them Instructions. You get a good job done for you. Otherwise I can do it for you but expensive is an understatement. Aproko where are you?

I just checked my previous post and didn't see where I offered to do this for anybody so the idea of collecting money and moving on does not arise; thought this forum is all about sharing ideas?

There is no doubt some few lawyers can handle this just that some of us do not see anything wrong walking into a federal establishment to get our business done.

Hope to be back here after I am done with the Ministry of Commerce so we can continue to compare notes.

Business / Re: Trademark Registration in Nigeria by igbonla(m): 1:16pm On Oct 21, 2007
I posted a query on this topic last week because I wanted to compare notes. This is the summary of my experience.
You have to go to the Trademark section of Federal Ministry of Commerce where you will provide details of the brand to be trademarked. Documentations required depends on the brand.

A namesearch is conducted to be sure nobody has trademarked the same name before the ministry will proceed with the registration.

On the whole, it takes about 2 months to complete the process and will cost about N15,000. This amount probably include tips (as you can't get any information on the actual cost), this amount is not receipted. It is one of the challenges of doing business in Nigeria.

Hope this helps.
