This thread is unnecessary . I thought Manchester United won undecided. why don't you guys spend your energy celebrating your teams success. There is no need to start a "mob attack" and bringing up past comments of Arsenal fans, Loyika, Debosky, Mc Omo etc. Remember those comments were made in "good faith" at the time, and they expected the team to do well. The team has not done as expected and most Arsenal fans have been gracious in defeat. What else do you guys want?

As for giving any person a chance, you will be making a mistake to come here and look for love. Go out there and see beautiful chicks coming after you without you saying a word to them and you want some smelling ass girls posting rubbish here. cheesy

This is a shallow arguement, and basically a lie. People have their own interests and should follow them. Some guys don't like sports, those that make them less of a man? . Please think before speaking

1. As for media collusion in the West, that is frankly nonsense. The media in the West goes out of its way to hold their Govt to account.Headlines are dominated by reams of stories about what is wrong with the country. Can you honestly claim that newspapers in England are seeking not to "fall out with the Govt in power"?

2. There are inherent biases in the media,in the West, its mainly a leftist bias. The main reason why the media rarely touches on Darfur is that very little of what is going on there can be blamed on the US. The emphasis is on Iraq and Palestine, not because these conflicts are the most bloody, but because of US involvement.

3. The worst conflict since the end of WWII was the civil war in DRC Congo(3.7m dead since 1991) but that gets less headlines than Palestine(200,000 dead since 1922).We all know of Haditha,Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay,how many non-Nigerians have ever heard of Odi or Zaki Ibiam where far more people died? There are even a lot of Nigerians that know more about Abu Ghraib than Odi.

4. Ultimately, the West's commendable capacity for self-introspection means that human rights violation by Westerners gets more media attention than similar acts in the developing world. In a situation where anti-Americanism is the modern fashion, any actual or perceived wrongdoing by the US gets blown out of proportion by left-wing media organisations such as Vanity Fair(which has a long history of voodoo journalism).

5. As we speak, tens of thousands of Falun Gong members are in Chinese "re-education" camps where thousands of them have perished for no other reason than having a religion without Govt permission.Does anybody care as long as we can't blame the US?

1. Newspapers in England, No. Don't know about the US though.

2. The media "neglect" of the situation going on in Dafur is similar to that which happened in Rwanda. Yes, there was no western involvement but does is the media silence justified? When i say "west", i don't single out just the US or UK. I know these two powers have different foreign policies, but "cooperate" on most issues.

3. If Nigerians on Nigeria know more about middle east conflict, then it is the problem of our media houses. The NTA is unlikely to air negative reports especially if it has to do with political cover ups. The other time AIT offices were locked up because soon loon in government didn't like what was being broadcast.

4. I am not anti American, but prefer British policies in general to the Americans. Anti American feelings is probably only natural for some considering the fact that America, as a super power and the most powerful country in the world, doesn't give due consideration to others sometimes, and people don't like authoritarian regimes hidden behind the banners of democracy. Of the American political parties, I support democrats at least since the Clinton administration. I know you are republican supporter tongue

5. I saw some Falun Gong protesters opposite the Chinese embassy last year when i was in the area. There was lots of literature about the killings and removal of body parts for rich donors. I really don't blame the US or other western states for getting involved because the interference into Chinese political issues can be extremely difficult especially for a government that is set in their ways especially regarding internal affairs.

@Imani

Let me illustrate what I mean by M'uslim groupthink in this context. You have 2 Christians-Afam and 4 Play-who have diametrically opposite views on issues regarding "Christian" nations like the US and its policies in the Middle-East.

There is no groupthink in this context because although we share the same faith,we do not all see the need to "gang up" on the side of the "Christians" in their dealings with "non-Christians".

However, and this is the cornerstone of my point, had it been M'uslims, every single one of them will trudge into this thread to offer the same boilerplate rant against the non-M'uslims.There is little or no diversity of opinion within their faith on such issues. The emphasis is on "unity" at the expense of self-introspection.

If the issue concerns the Arabs, the decibel levels gets even higher with each one of them, especially the Africans, seeking to be more pro-Arab than the Arabs. The underlying reason for this is that theirs' is a faith which is merely a vehicle for Arab cultural imperialism.

Because the faith is essentially a vehicle for Arab cultural imperialism,it leads to,apart from groupthink on Arab geo-political issues, inter alia;adoption of Arab names, language, cultural practices and dressing amongst people who aren't Arabs.

Whenever an issue paints Arabs in a bad light-for instance slavery-their MO is to either avoid it or come out and declare total support for the Arabs. That one is pro-Arab is not in itself odd(I am very pro-US myself),what is absurd is that almost every single of them is.Like I noted earlier, once the poster is M'uslim, you can automatically tell what his opinion will be on an issue concerning Arabs. That is where the groupthink manifests itself.

I will defer to your analysis on this subject. I fully understand your stance on mooslim "groupthink" in the context that you have used it. There are 2 sides to the argument though. One school of thought says "not to paint everyone with the same brush", while the other says looking at previous history, it is easy to see why generalisations are sometimes made. It is true that mooslims are "louder" in their grievances than the Christians and most share in the "hatred" for the state of Israel. My stance on the Israeli/Palestinian issue is that Israel has every right to defend itself and her people against terrorists, particularly suicide bombers which certain parts of the i'slamic faith endorse. I once saw a documentary in which a young child was being "programmed to "hate" the Jews and taught to call them "dogs". Now, that may well be media propaganda, who knows? I have never been to the region and base most of my observation on media reports, articles, books etc. I made a point in my previous post about the communist states particularly China and maybe Russia to an extent. I have had several Chinese friends and they ALL believe Tibet should continue to belong to China. This is also a case of group think, but without the faith element. Remember the media in China is highly monitored and government agencies are quick to dissolve any dissent by force if necessary. What you be your views on the communist blocs? Please don't tell me they are wonderful.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Us Coup Backfires, But Most Media Outlets Unwilling To Investigate, Cover Story by Imani(f): 6:59am On Apr 11, 2008
Afam,

I have to agree with you that there is media "collusion" going all the time. At the end of the day, media houses also have their own agendas and will generally not want to fall out with the government in power, except they side with an opposition party. I will not go as far as to say that articles in magazines such as vanity fair is more credible than articles in financial times, time magazine, etc but like someone once said "don't always believe what you hear". With regards to the middle east policies, of course America and the west generally will have their own agenda which they want to portray. Nobody seems to care much about what is happening in Dafur and only a few media outlets pick up on the story weekly in the UK. In fact, it hasn't been mentioned during question time much this parliamentary session. I believe when a story is reported, there are usually "behind the scenes" incidents that the media outlets can decide whether to believe or not. Using the Iraq war, some of us never knew some of what the Americans and British solders were doing until the story broke out through pictures leaked to the press, probably by whistle blowers. Of course the MOD and their American counterparts would tried to suppress the news anyway before it was published. Media houses also have their own agendas. They are after ratings, therefore, they may "break a story" to get maximum audience. The context of which you have used media collusion was regrading the middle east clash, but looking closer to home, collusion is more rife in developing countries eg Nigeria, especially among politically exposed persons, and in the former soviet union blocs and other communist states.

4Play,

I find your illustration of "groupthink" interesting. Of course you used "name" to illustrate your point, but the same can be said of other factors such as dressing. You claim the mooslims are less likely to "dissent" from popular opinion. I agree that while it might seem the case, but on closer inspection, i will say this generally applies to the hardliners. My example of dressing, from the female point, is that there are different types of i'slamic dresses but depending on how "religious" a woman is in certain parts of mooslim world, they can or cannot follow the strictest type of dressing. I used to think all females were mandated to cover their hair until i met some at university who didn't. This is not to counter your point of being like "zombies" because i am aware, there is still a lot to be done to improve women's rights in the region. The context of my example obviously has some flaws, as i have based my illustrations on interactions with mooslim OUTSIDE an Arabic state. I doubt women in Pakistan would have such liberty, even though the choice is there but if the men refuse to allow them to use that choice, then it is no good to them. I think you will also find issues of groupthink maybe stronger in communist blocs such as Russia, China, Japan, Cuba etc, these people are not generally mooslim. So widen your pool.

I will come back to your example of name calling. Have to dash off to work now. No "african time" allowed and rightly so.

The british generally are stoic to strangers. It does not mean they are "sqeezing" thier faces. Americans are "friendlier" and generally more chatty. well being born in London i don't think i will know how visa rejection feels but its not the end of the world!! save your money, invest it, make more money, start a business, there are sooo many options in Nigeria for you!!!! People running away from niger just lazy!

How would you know if people are "lazy" if you have never been in their shoes? Living in Nigeria for some is like living in a jungle. A lot of basic amenities taken for granted in the UK like running water, electricity, good roads, good transport links, good education, shopping malls are very limited for most and the average wage for some earners is less than £5 per week. These are people who probably have families, maybe more educated than you but the opportunities are simply not there, or if they are have been subjected to nepotism, as happens a lot in the Nigerian culture. Sometimes it is "who you know" that matters and leads to the right connection.

I am not advocating we all abandon our "beloved" country, but for some, when you get an opportunity to see a different way of life, why would you want to go back into obscurity?

Thank God Seun deleted a particular thread, shame i didnt have time to digest all the failed love romances on this same nairaland. Grown men making fun of each other and disclosing YIM chats for all to read.

So, SAM MILLA, how many more chances are guys supposed to get?.
