Business / Re: PART 1: NIGERIAN OIL INDUSTRY AND FUEL SUBSIDY: FACTS, MYTHS & HIDDEN TRUTH by jonced(m): 2:26pm On Nov 22, 2011
I like the fact that the OP took the time to post this information on a very topical issue in the country today.

@OP, ur effort is much appreciated.

I am not sure however, if all that was written is accurate, some contributors have disputed some of the information BUT that is neither here nor there.

The fact as i see it is that some greedy nigerians are making tons of money from the loopholes in the Oil Industry not necessarily because of wrong government policies but because of corrupt  govt. officers who are always ready to explore avenues to garner wealth fraudulently.

This situation i believe is what informed the presidents decision to remove the fuel subsidy. His assumption is that by removing the subsidy, a lot of the funds going into corrupt pockets would be halted and the proceeds from our national resource  would be channeled into the appropriate quarters ie governmant coffers for the good of all and not just a few. A good plan it is, but quite laughable in our context.

Nigerians are still waiting for an explanation for the disappearance of over $25 million  excess crude revenue that walked into individuals pockets when the treasury was looted during the unfortunate incapacitation of the late Yar'adua in 2008/2009. What happened to the billions spent by government
on power? Nigerians NEVER see any positive impact of government disbursements on their life, its terrible.

No power, health sector virtually non existent, infant and maternal mortality rate is one of the highest in the world, hospitals lack facilities. education is abysmal, our public school students are practically illiterates, our roads are death traps in the dry season and lakes during the rainy season, currency devaluation is a constant phenomenon, No jobs (how can there b jobs when interest rates and cost of runnning a business are prohibitive)

My point is that any money that accrues into the government coffers as a result of subsidy removal will only end up being stolen anyway upon disbursement and regular Nigerians will just end up losing both ways, the result will be an unimagineable economic burden and suffering.

This administration should show a much greater determination to deal decisively with corruption and ensure that the people can benefit from our national resouce, oil. Unfortunately, i see a lack of resolve in this regard and too many sacred cows, methinks there are many skeletons in the presidents cupboard that is hindering him, some of which are electoral skeletons.

The country's state of security is very sad, this situation came about mainly as a result of citizens hardship and now the government want to add more, well, let's see.

The president said the economy will collapse, simple economics tells me that if a government has a resource in high demand (oil) that can be exported and internal spending is controlled, there should be excess left, just as a company that has a viable product should make a profit after deducting cost of sales and expenses.

Goverment should as a matter of urgency begin to find solutions to refining crude oil in the country, by partnering with countries more developed in this sector. i also advocate for private companies to participate but a strong regulator should be in place, just as the CBN regulates banks. This way a more lasting solution will be found and our children would not have to go through the perrenial oscillation that has been our lot.

For now, it will be unwise and insensitive to the security situation in the country now to remove the subsidy.
Any assurances by the government that funds realised from subsidy removal will make life easier for Nigerians is totally unacceptable because this has never been the case. The same corrupt individuals would just find another means to siphon the money into their pockets,

GEJ, I would advise u for now to leave the subsidy in place, tackle the loopholes and corruption in the system, fix the refinery inadequacies , cut government expenditure, both capital and recurrent, aggressively explore other means of income besides crude and tackle the security problem. These are pressing initiatives for now.

GEJ, be bold and make a difference so that our CHILDREN would have something to be happy about.

God bless Nigeria

Family / Re: Why Do Men Cheat ( Strictry For Females) by jonced(m): 7:04am On Jun 25, 2011
@poster

I absolutely agree with Ogugua above. Why would u limit this thread to ladies? How can they give u an accurate response when they r not men? Is it not the person wearing the shoes that knows where it pinches? If u really want an honest accurate answer, u better read the men's responses.

As 4 me, i beleive men cheat because:

-they satisfy an innate need to hunt and kill/capture. This is how men were built, it is the hormones, that is why thruout history men always tried to conquer new territories etc. And this need is insatiable. However, it can be controlled.

- men also cheat because they have big egos. These big egos make them vulnerable to insecurity. This makes them to feel the need to prove to themselves that they r good enough to be appreciated by others (ladies) every now and then.

Enuff said, wouldnt do to reveal all the secrets now, would it?

Business / Re: Can The Finance Minister Remove The CBN Governor? by jonced(m): 6:22am On Jun 25, 2011
Let me add to my response above that the Finance minister cannot sack the CBN gov., but the senate can, please read further comments above.
Business / Re: Can The Finance Minister Remove The CBN Governor? by jonced(m): 6:05am On Jun 25, 2011
^^^Pls do not derail this thread, we r not talking about the appointment of a finance minister here.

Who says the senate cannot sack the CBN governor? All they have to do is decide that he is incompetent and recommend to the president that he be sacked!

Did u not witness what transpired when the senate summoned the CBN gov. to explain what he meant when he said the NASS remunerations accounted for a large chunk of the country's budgeted recurrent expenditue?
At his appearance, he told the senators that if they wanted to sack him they could go ahead, but he would stand by what he said.

Regarding the issue of islamic banking. In principle it is ok, however in Nigeria, u can be sure that once it starts, the islamic bank will be hijacked by extremists who will practise their own type of islamic banking. Do pple not know that the kind of islam practised in northern nigeria is one of the most radical forms of islam, someone was said that it could only be compared to that of Afghanistan in the whole world. If pple think in practise that those banks will give non muslims loans, i'm surprised at their naivety. They would not openly say they cannot give such loans, but there would always find a reason not to approve the loan. This islamic banking is definitely not what the country needs at this critical time, maybe later. The mindset of the citizens is not tuned to accommodate it. Not with all the bombings, religous killings and growing distrust among the major religions. We need to be careful, as this form of banking will only increase the tension btw divergent reli
gous beliefs and further draw us apart. There is such a thing as doing the right thing at the wrong time, and i think that applies in this case.

Literature / Re: Anybody Old Enough To Remember The "pacesetters" Series by jonced(m): 5:07pm On Jun 22, 2011
@topic

Yeah, i was in secondary school in the '80s when pacesetter books were popular. The ones that really blew my mind are:

- Bloodbath at Lobster close
- The equitorial assignment (benny camber 009)
- Angel of Death (linda Harvey)
- Mark of the cobra
- The undesirable element
- For Mbatha n Rebecca.

Those were the days when Nigeria was a beautiful and peaceful country. No bombings, no greed, no hatred etc. How did things get sooo bad, sooo fast?

Cry, my beloved country, cry.

i am connected using my phone, so that may be a bit tricky, but just a cursory view of some threads in the romance section (Gosh! the langauge) n the polilical section (the level of tribal insults and hating) among others will show what i am talking about.
Nairaland / General / Nairalanders! Stop The Rudeness And Foul Language. by jonced(m): 7:45am On Jun 19, 2011
Hello all,

I am a relatively new member of this forum, but i cannot but express my dismay and disappointment at the level of rudeness and the manner in which foul language is being thrown around.

I beleive this forum (Nairaland) was created to enhance positive interactions among Nigerians
and freinds of Nigeria located all over the globe.

However, what i c on different threads is uncouth language, an unhealthy degree of tribalism, insults flying left and right and generally unwholesome speech.

This does not potray Nigerians as the warm freindly people we really are, and a casual visitor to this forum might think Nigerians are crass and undignified people.

No matter our tribe, religion or social preferences, we need to air them on threads in a civilised manner, without throwing insults at people with divergent views. Also, we are all citizens of one great country: NIGERIA, we are therefore brothers and sisters and should accommodate one another no matter the tribe or religion.

No matter where our journeys have taken us on thsis planet, we have one common home and i beleive that the need to connect with our fellow countrymen/women is why we are members of this forum.

Let us show the stuff Nigerians are made of. Let us showcase to the world our proud heritage and culture. Let us project our freindly and accomodating nature. Let us treat each other with decorum and dignity.

Thank you.

God Bless Nigeria!
Romance / Re: My Fiancee Lied About Her Age by jonced(m): 9:49pm On Jun 15, 2011
@poster

Let me be honest with u. she was wrong to lie about her age, no doubt. But the question is: Do u love her? If ur answer is yes, then go ahead with the marriage. The truth is that nobody is perfect. Can pple on NL forum say they never lied to their partner ever?

C'mon let's be real, even u - poster must have told a lie or two, its not as if the issue is such a big deal, whats 3 years age difference when we are talking about love and marriage/lifetime commitment. I dont know about u, but i think its not so easy to meet someone who u love enough to consider marrying not to talk of having done the introduction etc.

I will advice that u go ahead with the wedding plans, dont make a mountain out of a molehill.

Good Luck
Romance / Re: Can You Date A Lady/guy With A Very Poor Command Of The English Language? by jonced(m): 11:32pm On Jun 14, 2011
@poster

I know how u feel, especially if u speak very good english and all ur freinds speak well too. I bet u n ur freinds must have laughed at people that speak bad english in the past, well, now the joke is on u. I understand.

since i started schooling i laughed at people that did not speak well (i know its wrong, but we were young and unwise), but it is now a part of me, and i definitely wont date a girl that speaks badly.

I remember when i was with a girl whose english was not so good. I was driving, she was in the pass. seat and my freind (i grew up with him n we used to laugh at bad speakers) was in the back seat. He had not met the girl before that day, so they were not talking. The car was quiet as i drove, suddenly the girl's cell phone rang, as soon as she picked the call, my heart started beating fast, i couldnt concentrate on the road and almost hit another car, i was so scared that she would make a grammatical blunder on the phone. Luckily it was a brief conversation and it went fine. But i knew that there was a problem.

My advise is if u can stand it, go ahead. As for me, its not just because of freinds or anything. PERSONALLY I GET IRRITATED when a persons grammar is all over the place.

So if u can stand it, stay, but if u cant, then STEP. U deserve a guy that u can be proud of and happy with.

Good Luck

The story does not add up. If she actually earns 120k, she cant maintain the lifestyle potrayed. Either she earns a lot more than that or she has a financier hidden somewhere.

I guess the other men think so too and r bailing out. She needs to convince the guys she meets that there is nothing odd about her lifestyle.

Romance / Re: Should A Graduate Lady Marry An Illiterate Man? by jonced(m): 11:48pm On Jun 11, 2011
@topic

I think ur frnd nids to b very careful. I am not sure the xtent of illiteracy, but if the man did not read beyond primary sch., then there might b a problem. Trust me, the way a well educated person reasons is quite different from an illiterate. Since marriage is a lifelon commitment, so many issues will arise along the way that will require both parties to reason on the same wavelength to resolve amicably. I am not saying she shouldnt go ahead, but she should consider it very carefully because it could b a real challenge to cope.

best of luck
