It might interest you to know that there are more Nig Drs practicing abroad than in Nig.The resultant brain drain has furthe reduced the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate medical training. How can nigerian Drs move in droves to Angola,Egypt and liberia? The new generation Nig Dr must continue to fight his cause. The ruling class should be held responsible for any untoward effect of any strike embarked upon by Drs in Nig! |

It amazes me when people see Drs as selfish for pressing home improvement on their conditions of service.Drs are an integral part of the larger society.Drs shop in same markets with the general populace.Their kids attend same schools.they pay same bills with other professions.Yes,the "hippocratic" oat is sacrosanct but dead people dont obey vows! The government/ruling class are after personal gains only. The only language the understand is strike.NLC ha started the warning strike today too! ! |

Politics / Doctors In Umuahia Join Protests by karlken(m): 9:59pm On Sep 25, 2010 |
Doctors Continue Protest over Insecurity in Abia From Emmanuel Ugwu in Umuahia , 09.24.2010 Members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Umuahia zone yesterday joined their Aba counterparts to protest the “worsening security threat to doctors in Abia State. This followed the kidnap and gruesome murder of one of their colleagues. The protest, which led to the shut down of both public and private hospitals in Aba on Thursday, snowballed into Umuahia on Friday as medical doctors operating within the state capital gathered at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, carrying placards and chanting protest songs . Some of the placards read: “Doctors say no to kidnapping, Doctors are now endangered species, stop kidnapping doctors,” while singing, “all we’re saying kill us no more.” The angry physicians wore their white overall and black arm bands as a sign of mourning of their slain colleague, Dr Stanley Uche, who was kidnapped at Osisioma and later killed and his body dumped at Umuika in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government even after his abductors had collected N2.5 million ransom.” Chairman of Umuahia zone of NMA, Dr Felix Agwu, said that insecurity problem in Abia has continued to affect medical practitioners as many of them have fallen victim more than once while some others have been killed by the hoodlums. According to him, the criminal elements sometimes come into the hospital and pose as patients only to kidnap unsuspecting physicians and turn round to demand ransoms and in some cases collect the ransom and kill the victim. He said that while the situation has relatively improved of recent in Umuahia, it has worsened in Aba, adding that many hospitals and clinics have closed down as the doctors have fled the Enyimba city in droves and relocated to other places to save their dear lives. The NMA chairman called on government to take urgent action and arrest the worsening security situation in the Abia, insisting that “the problem is not insurmountable”. He said that all public and private hospitals in Umuahia would remain closed for 24 hours, adding that only inpatients would be given medical attention during the protest period, which would terminate by 8.00am on Saturday. |
Romance / Randy Lecturers Are Idiots by karlken(m): 9:13pm On Sep 25, 2010 |
Randy lecturers and jungle justice By Funke Egbemode 08055069066 (SMS only, please) {egbemode@sunnewsonline.com} Saturday, September 25, 2010 Are you married to a university lecturer? Or is your husband a teacher in any of the higher institutions around the country? Do you trust his judgment of what is right and decent? Even if you cannot vouch for his fidelity, are you sure those trespassing on your property are not his students? As brilliant as university dons are supposed to be, a few of them have brains that automatically shut down at the sight of a pair of hot legs or teenage cleavage. Everything that earned them their Ph.Ds simply fly out of the window once they see exposed youthful female flesh. They simply take the ‘first amendment’ way out when faced with temptation. Oh, you don’t know temptation’s first amendment? Here’s it: the best way to avoid temptation is to fall into it. See? Nice and easy. No struggle. Just follow the wide path. Considering that most undergraduate kids now think with their cleavages, the dons also meet them halfway by responding with their third legs. We all know what that means. A randy don sees boobs being shoved in his face and his brains spills out or at best goes on recess. Now, I haven’t been able to come up with a convincing argument against an affair between an 18-year-old female undergraduate and her 52-year-old teacher. My friends said something about consenting adult. I’m not convinced that line of thought makes it right but I know once it is not rape and neither of the adult is complaining, they might as well go ahead and live happily ever after. But where there is as much as a grunt from either of the parties, then the wronged party should expect consequences and repercussions. Temptation abides everywhere, so let no lecturer say the half-naked girls make their lives miserable. There are half-naked girls all over. More in the cities than on some campuses. There are also lecturers whose students know better than to go half-naked to their offices. But women who are married to willing customers of Jezebel undergraduates are really in trouble. What’s worse, their troubles are not limited to HIV and its younger siblings like gonorrhoea. And the real trouble, I hear, starts when a lecturer takes advantage of or blackmails an unwilling student into his randy bed. That’s when his headache migrates into migraine territory. And if the mother of his unwilling victim is a hot mum who does not leave vengeance to God, he just might end up with a tumour. Like in the case of Dr Oraks. He saw this beautiful JAMBITE called Onome. She looked untouched, beautiful, ever so well turned out. Must have come from a rich home, thought 49-year-old Oraks. He figured Onome was one of those spoilt rich kids who are supposed to have ‘seen it all’ by the time they are 18. So, he went after her. Be my girl and get a straight “A’ in my course and Oraks course was a difficult one. Onome didn’t see why she had to sleep with the old man to get an ‘A’. Besides, she did not need an ‘A’ . A pass would do just fine. She innocently told Oraks off. Oraks stayed on her case. She stood her ground. Until one evening when she went for tutorials. As the group was leaving, Oraks told Onome to wait behind. He then launched into a long homily on why getting in between Onome’s legs would put her on the path to academic paradise. He knew many lecturers. He even knew a few campus gang lords. To shorten a long story, Oraks had his way with Onome right there in his office. It was pure rape. You know how these things happen. Onome got pregnant. Why does it always happen like that, anyway? Even in marriage, it is the month you and your husband become more passionate than sensible that you get pregnant when you are still breast- feeding. Anyway, Onome decided to tell Oraks his three kids in the University Staff School were about to get a little brother or sister. Awesome, and how did that become Dr Orakwe’s business or did his office look like a maternity ward? He virtually kicked Onome out of his office. Now, Onome was an only child of a single mother who was determined to give her daughter all she did not get which was why the girl looked like a ‘butter’ in the first place. Like any desperate pregnant teenager who did not want to shatter her struggling mum’s hopes, Onome opted for an abortion. It went wrong. Thank God, she did not die but her womb was substantially damaged enough for the doctor to say Onome would need a miracle to ever become a mother. Onome’s mother was distraught. She raved and raged at her ungrateful daughter. How could she let her down like that after all she’d sacrificed? Running around with foolish boys who were not ready to become fathers? She made Onome sound like a murderer and LovePeddler rolled into one. The girl confessed. It was her lecturer who stole her womanhood. All hell was let loose in Oraks’ home. He lost two children in one day in an accident that left the car still okay enough to be driven from the accident scene. Orak’s wife and the driver sustained no serious injuries but his two sons died on the spot. Was that karma? Was Onome’s mother a witch or was Onome herself an ogbanje? That was why I started this piece with those questions. If you are married to a teacher who eats his female students for dessert, you and your kids are not safe. Everything that makes you happy could end in one day. Call him and beg him. What happened to Oraks’ children may just be jungle justice of a kind. Don’t ask me what I’d do if I were Onome’s mum. The issue is what wouldn’t I do if a randy goat messes up my daughter. |

Politics / "lip Service"gov T A Orji Extends Amnesty Program by karlken(m): 12:58pm On Sep 24, 2010 |
Abia gov gives kidnappers 2-week ultimatum From CHUKS ONUOHA, Umuahia Friday, September 24, 2010 •Gov. Theodore Orji Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Kidnappers, armed robbers and other criminals in Abia have been given two weeks to surrender their arms and embrace the amnesty package offered them by the state and Federal Governments or face military onslaught. The state Governor, Dr. Theodore Orji stated this yesterday as a way of addressing the continued security problems in the state, particularly, Abia South Senatorial District in which Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state falls. He was speaking while making amnesty proclamation in Umuahia, where he called on sons and daughters of the state to leave criminality and embrace the long arm of love offered them by the state. The governor said government inaction towards the evil activities of the criminals should not be taken as a sign of weakness but as a way of showing love to the citizens of the state. The amnesty programme, he said, would take effect from Thursday and elapse on midnight of Friday, October 7. Governor Orji also said the amnesty programme for repentant criminals would only be effective upon surrendering and handing over of all equipment, weapons, arms and ammunition. The repentant criminals would also be expected to fill forms at the Amnesty Resettlement Camp at Asa High School, Ukwa West Local Government Area, which has been reconstructed for their rehabilitation. According to him, he was empowered by the constitutional provision as contained in Section 212 (1999), which granted him power to grant unconditional pardon to all persons who have directly or indirectly participated in the crime of kidnapping in the state, warning that this was the last chance. “This is the last chance for the kidnappers because they are not above the law and cannot be,” the governor warned, stating further that his government was serious because the state could no longer be used as a toy place for kidnappers. “Aba is now a no-go area. Anytime we hear of any shooting or any criminal act, the proclamation should be seen as ended,” he warned, adding that the government does not expect to hear of any criminal act within the two-week period. “The second attempt at giving amnesty to repentant kidnappers and armed robbers by the state government should not be seen as an admission of weakness or incapacity on the part of government to confront criminals headlong; it is a last attempt at averting the calamity of destruction of lives and property that may befall communities harbouring criminals in the event of the military onslaught which would inevitably come in the event of non-subscription to the programme by the criminal elements in the state.” Meanwhile, businessmen, traders and other well-to-do people of the state, who are resident in Aba have allegedly fled the city to neighbouring states to escape being kidnapped by the hoodlums who now kill their victims after collecting ransom. The situation of Aba is more of a war zone as people are no longer sure of what will happen the next minute. |
Politics / Doctors Shut Abia Hospitals by karlken(m): 12:55pm On Sep 24, 2010 |
Doctors shut Abia hospitals , Over kidnapped colleague’s murder From OKEY SAMPSON, Aba Friday, September 24, 2010 • Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Following the murder of Dr. Stanley Uche, an Aba-based medical practitioner on Monday by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers after collecting ransom from wife, and other acts of kidnapping and violent crimes going on in Aba and its environs, doctors in the city under the aegis of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), have shut down health institutions (both public and private) in the area for two days in protest, promising, however, to make the closure indefinite if nothing urgent was done to arrest the situation. This was coming on the heels of the kidnap of two medical doctors in Aba on Wednesday. What could have turned into a street demonstration by the doctors was, however, averted when the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Okey Oga who arrived the old site of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), venue of the emergency meeting that could have preceded the demonstrations, appealed to the doctors to shelve their plans while the state government fashion out ways of tackling the menace. Dr. Uche of Christian Victory Hospital was killed on Monday as he was travelling to his village in Imo State for the burial of his sister after collecting ransom from the wife who was earlier kidnapped alongside her husband. In a communiqué issued at the end of the emergency meeting and signed by its Chairman and Secretary respectively, Dr. Godwin Uwaoma and Dr. Chris Nwachi, NMA, Aba Zone, observed that in the past one year, “not less than 20 doctors have been kidnapped in Aba making it impossible for doctors to discharge their humanitarian services.” The doctors noted with regret that hospitals and clinics were daily closing in Aba with doctors fleeing the city due to kidnapping. They opined that the situation had gone out of hand as “this criminality is being institutionalized as young girls and boys are being recruited on payment of N20, 000 to be trained to become kidnappers.” The communiqué read in part, “The Nigeria Medical Association, Aba Zone rose with the following resolutions and demands: *condemns in its entirety these despicable acts of kidnappings, killings, robbing, maiming and raping of innocent women; *That government and its agencies should, as matter of urgency, tackle head-on these menace; *That all doctors in all hospitals (private, government, missionary, etc) stay off all health institutions today and tomorrow (September 23-24, 2010); *That all kidnappers should know and remember that no town thrives without medical officers, should embrace peace and join the government’s amnesty programme.” As the meeting was going on, information filtered in that two medical doctors had been kidnapped. The doctors, whose identity could not be ascertained before filing the report, were reported to have been kidnapped between Wednesday night and Thursday morning in different locations of the city. The Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, Aba Area Command, Mr. Ebere Onyeagoro, while addressing the medical doctors, sympathized with them over the death of their colleague in the hands of kidnappers and urged them to always volunteer information to the police. |
