Crime / Is Attacking A Nigerian An Attack On Nigeria? Katakata.com.ng Opinion Piece by katakataNG: 11:43am On Apr 20, 2019

Watching the recent xenophobic attacks on tv a few days ago got me thinking, why does a South African feel insouciant enough to take the life of a foreign citizen and in this case a Nigerian citizen.

To contextualize this question let us reverse the roles of the two countries and their citizens.

South African businessmen, workers, students and criminals living in Nigeria wake up to sporadic attacks specifically targeting them. Perhaps a news headline reading, 10 South Africans Killed in Nigeria in Xenophobic attacks. There would be an immediate response from the Nigerian government, Checkpoints will be mounted, news entities will cover the unfortunate situation. There would be an outcry on social media by Nigerians who do not support the attacks. I predict a hashtag #istandwithsouthafricans or some other hashtag echoing the same sentiment will be trending.

Multiple Nigerian celebrities will make social media posts condemning the attacks and reiterating how tolerant we Nigerians are, sending condolence and apologetic messages to the families of the deceased as well as the country of South Africa as a whole.

Some of these reactions will be genuine because there are in fact great Nigerians with good hearts and honest care for their neighbors. However, for the most part, it will all be superficial.

Individual Nigerians will jump on the #istandwithsouthafricans train not because care about some random South Africans been killed, but rather to present a positive image to their friends, colleagues or because it is trendy to do so at that point.

The same goes for the government of Nigeria, a few people within the government would actually have honest reasons to take the swift actions that have been implemented to prevent a re-occurence and make other South Africans feel Secure, but for the most part, the reaction of the Nigerian government will be for selfish reasons.

Perhaps to protect its relationship with South Africa, or to show the world it is competent, to protect its trade agreements and or limit PR damage to the administration.

You see, whether for genuine or selfish reasons Nigeria will come together to reject the notion of Xenophobia and take actions to prevent its reoccurrence.

Now, let’s go back to the question i posed earlier,

“why does a South African feel insouciant enough to take the life of a foreign citizen and in this case a Nigerian citizen”

The answer is both complex and simple. Let’s go with the simple answer, in providing that we may touch on the more complex cause.
