Politics / Appeal Court Affirms Elections Of Ganduje, Tambuwal, Lalong by kemiyetunde: 3:52pm On Nov 29, 2019
SOURCE(NAIJAPALABA.COM)-Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has urged his main challenger during the 2019 governorship election, Senator Jeremiah Useni of the Peoples Democratic Party to concede defeat and join hands with his administration to move the state forward. Lalong said this on Friday while reacting to the Court of Appeal judgement which affirmed his victory at the poll. Useni, through his counsel, Mr Edward Pwajok, SAN, had faulted the Appeal Court judgment which dismissed his petition against Lalong and said he would “press further” to reclaim his mandate. But Lalong in a statement on Friday advised the PDP candidate to abandon the course of action and team up with his government for the good of the people. According to the statement signed by the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Makut Simon Macham, Lalong said, “This is not a victory for me but for the entire people of Plateau State, who have demonstrated faith in our Rescue Mission. Like I have repeatedly said, I’m governor for everyone irrespective of party, tribe, religious or any other affiliation. I’m ready to carry everyone along.” The governor, who described his victory at the Appeal Court as yet another collective victory for the entire people of Plateau State added that the verdict of the court didn’t surprise him as he has never doubted the validity of the mandate reposed in him and the APC. He called on Plateau citizens to continue supporting his administration.

Politics / Nigerian Women Encouraged To Unite, Fund Female Candidates During Polls by kemiyetunde: 2:22pm On Nov 28, 2019
SOURCE(NAIJAPALABA.COM)-Professor Funmi Para-Mallam, a member of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, has urged women to unite and fund female political candidates during elections. Para-Mallam, a specialist in Gender and Development Studies, made the call while summarising commitments by various women groups at the National Women’s Dialogue, tagged the Womanifesto 2019. Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), religious groups, ethnic groups, market women groups and others attended the three-day dialogue. According to her, women should unite, choose good female representatives that will protect and advocate for their rights, as well as fund the election to enable more women to participate in political elective positions. She said “We cannot get this done without sacrifices. We have to make sacrifices, put our money where our mouths are. Let’s bring out our widow’s mite,’’ she said. Mrs Aisha Dukku, Chairperson, House Committee on Electoral Reforms, House of Representatives, called on more women to join political parties to enable them to choose female candidates to represent the party during elections. She reiterated the need for female political aspirants to be accessible to people at the grassroots, not only during elections, to enable them to emerge victorious. The Chief Whip, House of Representatives, Ms Nkiruka Onyejiocha, called for more female representation in governance to enable them to implement laws like the Child Rights Act, which would further address issues concerning women and children. On her part, Senator Abiodun Olujimi advised women to mentor and encourage young women to participate actively in politics. She said “The time has come for us to be willing to be mentors, let us drop all the airs and stop running away from women. Let us help each other and it is in doing this that we get to where we are going.” Mrs Bisi Fayemi, wife of Ekiti State Governor and Founder of African Women Development Fund, stressed the need for women to speak with one voice to address gender-based violence and discrimination against women. She said, “We want a Nigeria where girls can reach their full potential, be given appointments without trade by barter, be treated with due respect and not as sex slaves, where they can aspire to be Presidents, Senators and others.” Mrs Mary Ekpere-Eta, the Director General, National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), said that the dialogue was a clear demonstration of women’s commitment toward promoting gender equality and empowerment of women. She said “It is important for us to reflect as women, what we want, following the poor outcomes for women in the 2019 general elections and representations at all levels of governance. “This occasion is indeed a time for Nigerian women to set goals for ourselves and with our daughters, who are the emerging generation side-by-side with us to shape a future and a tomorrow where no one is left behind and gender equality is a norm.’’ Mrs Priscilla Ankut, the Component Manager, Access to Justice for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Rule Of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Project, stressed the need to end all forms of gender based violence. She added that the Nigeria Sexual Offender Register and the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Referal Guidelines would help to address the plight of women and prosecute the perpetrators of the act.

Crime / Woman Arrested After 23 Stolen ATM Cards Were Found In Her Private Part by kemiyetunde: 1:27pm On Nov 28, 2019
SOURCE(NAIJAPALABA.COM)-A 23-year-old Tanzanian woman suspected of illegally obtaining bank users’ ATM cards and then withdrawing their monies has been arrested by the police and the shocker is that 23 ATM Cards were found hidden in her private part. The suspect identified as Halima Juma was arrested on Tuesday after a bank teller got quite suspicious of her bank transactions. Halima had used different cards of the same bank to withdraw money from a CRDB Bank ATM in Mbagala and this got the teller to alert the security personnel. Upon being approached, Halima tried escaping but was caught down and upon a thorough search, she was found with 23 ATM cards all hidden in her private part. She then confessed to be Confirming the case, Dar es Salaam regional police boss, Lazaro Mambosasa reportedly said, “She said they have been targeting the elderly rich-but-illiterate men and women, and pretend to help them withdraw money from ATM machines. She said they usually ask the users for their PIN numbers, and once they reveal the information, they lie to them that the ATM card has been ‘swallowed’, and so they should report to their respective banks the following day. They, thereafter, go to another ATM machine and withdraw the monies. The other method they are employing is standing next to a user who has just withdrawn money via a teller. So, when the client has received his money, and is in the process of either counting or loading them into an envelope, they exchange his or her ATM card with another one. Of course, you know many a times, when one is counting money, the last thing they would pick from the counter is the ATM card and the identity card.“

Sports / NFF Queries Gernot Rohr Over Breach Of Contract by kemiyetunde: 12:44pm On Nov 28, 2019
The Nigeria Football Federation has refuted claims they owe Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr close to $100,000 in bonuses and allowances. This was disclosed in a press statement released by the Communications Department of the NFF on Wednesday. The statement was reacting to an interview credited to Rohr, where he said the NFF owed him about $100,000. According to the NFF, the German coach was being owed $30,000, which was “the differential in his new contract.” The statement quoted NFF Technical Director, Mr. Bitrus Bewarang, as saying the federation would soon pay the coach the amount owed after interfacing with their financial advisors and sponsors. “As at today, the only money that the NFF is owing Mr. Rohr is the differential in his new contract (about $30,000) which our financial advisors have to align and interface with AITEO before SOURCE(NAIJAPALABA.COM)-payment (as the improved contract came into effect in the last half of the year), and which process was concluded on Friday last week. “He will soon be paid. Mr. Rohr has talked about bonus from the 2019 AFCON, which is not contractual but discretionary on the part of the Federation. The present NFF started the policy of paying players a percentage of tournament bonus during the 2018 FIFA World Cup just to motivate them, outside their bonuses and allowances,” part of the statement read. Bewarang also warned the Eagles coach from speaking to the media about his contract, saying it amounted to breach of contract. “Rohr’s speaking to the media about his contract is an act the federation termed as “highly unprofessional and against the spirit and letter of his contractual relationship with the football –ruling body. “In as much as we appreciate the work that Mr. Rohr has been doing with the Super Eagles in the past 40 months, his recent penchant for breaching provisions of the contract he signed with the NFF and the Code of Conduct for coaches is not good for the relationship. “The NFF wishes that Mr. Rohr continues in the job because of the team he is building for Nigeria which looks promising and has earned some good results since he took charge, but he cannot continue to nonchalantly cause the NFF as a body, and Nigeria as a nation, reputational damage through his utterances and actions,” Bewarang said.

Sports / Champions League: Lionel Messi Scores In 700th Match As Barc by kemiyetunde: 11:46am On Nov 28, 2019
SOURCE(NAIJAPALABA.COM)-Lionel Messi scored in his 700th match for Barcelona and also set up goals for Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann as the Catalans beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 on Wednesday. The win for Barca ensured that they sealed a spot in the Champions League knockout stages as Group F winners. Messi set up Suarez to put Barca ahead at a packed Camp Nou in the 29th minute before the Uruguayan returned the compliment for the Argentine to establish another Champions League record on his landmark night four minutes later. Messi’s left-foot strike meant he had scored against a 34th different team in the Champions League, surpassing the mark that he had shared with Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul. “Messi moves so well between the lines and when he receives the ball he is almost unstoppable,” said Dortmund coach Lucien Favre, whose side struck a late consolation goal through substitute Jadon Sancho. “Sometimes all you can do is try to foul him because he is so explosive. He is also deadly whenever he makes a final ball.” Substitute Griezmann finished off a defence-splitting pass from Messi to further stretch Barca’s lead in the 67th minute, a much-needed goal for the Frenchman’s confidence after failing to score in his previous six appearances for the club. Griezmann had been left out of the starting line-up but came on midway through the first half when his injury-prone compatriot Ousmane Dembele was forced off with a third muscle problem of the campaign. Dortmund’s England forward Sancho also began the game on the bench but made an impact when introduced after halftime, firing in an impressive consolation strike for the Germans in the 77th minute after pouncing on a loose ball inside the area. The 19-year-old then forced Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to turn a powerful shot on to the crossbar in a strong finish from the German side, whose coach Favre is under pressure due to the team’s poor domestic results. But it did not tarnish what was a therapeutic win for Barca, who had come in for scathing criticism for their recent poor displays against Leganes, Levante and Slavia Prague, even though they are top of La Liga and their Champions League group. Ernesto Valverde’s side lead the standings with 11 points from five games, Inter Milan are second on seven while Dortmund are third, also on seven, with Slavia bottom with two. “We were in the toughest group in the competition and once again we have qualified for the latter stages with a game to spare,” said Valverde. “Our first objective was to qualify as group winners but we also wanted to show a real improvement in our play,” added Suarez. “We relaxed a bit in the second half and hung on to our lead but we should still leave here feeling very happy.” (Reuters/NAN)
