Travel / Nigeria's Revenue From Train Services Increased By 199% To ₦6.1bn In One Year by lafiask: 10:46pm On Jun 23, 2022
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it generated N6.08 billion revenue from passengers, cargo and other services in 2021.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said this in its latest rail transportation data for 2021.

The figure, compared to that of 2020 (N2.03 billion), shows an increase in federal government revenue from railway transport services by 199 percent in one year.

According to the report, NRC generated N5.70 billion from passengers in 2021 against N1.75 billion in 2020.

Goods and cargo in 2021 generated N317.57 million, against N281.35 million in 2020, while income from other receipts stood at N66.80 million in 2021, higher than the N5.19 million recorded in the preceding year.

Further analysis by TheCable Index showed that the corporation recorded its highest revenue from passengers in Q4 2021 with N1.91 billion and the lowest recorded in the second quarter of 2020 with N320.34 million.

It further revealed that 2.71 million passengers travelled via the rail system in 2021 against 1.02 million passengers recorded in 2020, representing a 166 percent increase.

A total of 168,301 tons of goods were also transported in 2021 compared to 87,440 recorded in 2020, showing a growth rate of 92.48 percent.

Among all categories in the report, the year 2020 (particularly Q2 2020) suffered the most losses and turnout of passengers due to the COVID-19 lockdown imposed by the federal government to curtail the spread of the virus across Nigeria, the report added.

Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, had said that the Abuja-Kaduna train service generates at least N300 million every month.

Politics / Muric To Tinubu On Vp Post: Consult The Noble Dozen by lafiask: 6:20pm On Jun 14, 2022
11th June, 2022

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC TO TINUBU ON VP POST: CONSULT THE NOBLE DOZEN

As Nigerians debate the suitable running mate of the presidential candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC), Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has advised Tinubu to

consult the ‘Noble Dozen’. The Noble Dozen is the name given by MURIC to the twelve sincere Northern governors who stood by the idea of the transfer of power to the South.

The suggestion was contained in a press statement issued by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Saturday, 11th June 2022.

The full statement reads:

“Nigerians are currently engaged in hot debate on the suitable running mate of the presidential candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC), Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu. We will like to advise that apart from ensuring that the position of vice president in 2023 goes to the North, Senator Tinubu should consult the ‘Noble Dozen’.

“Those we refer to as the Noble Dozen are those twelve (12) sincere Northern governors who disabused the minds of Nigerians concerning the myth of Northern hegemony and a nonexistent caliphate oligarchy by insisting that APC's

presidential candidate must come from the South. This was a great sacrifice and a noble idea.

“They demonstrated statesmanship, patriotism and nobility of thought by that action. Tinubu should leverage on the confidence they reposed in him and reciprocate by allowing them to pick a running mate for him. Of course they may suggest two names and allow him to pick one out of the two. This will definitely diminish the so called North-South dichotomy and further cement the unity of our great country, Nigeria.

“While we submit that credibility, integrity and competence must be the overriding parameters, we aver that the faith of the running mate should not be an issue. If it has never been an issue in places like Jos, Benue, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, the South Eastern states and the South South where both the governors and their deputies have always been Christians in spite of the existence of substantial number of Muslims, why should it suddenly become an issue at the federal level?

“MURIC charges Senator Tinubu to remain focused on building a united, virile and progressive Nigeria. Though we have no special objection to the choice of a Christian running mate, it will be wise for him to allow the Noble Dozen to influence his choice. Once this happens, the same Noble Dozen will sell his idea to the whole North. That may also secure Northern votes for him. Democracy is a game of numbers, not primordial sentiments, not social media noise or the cantankerous cacophony of demagogic charlatans.

“Other Muslim candidates like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Kola Abiola do not seem to have the same challenge. Neither do Christian flagbearers. By the way, Christian flagbearers are free to pick fellow Christians in Christian-Christian tickets. What is necessary is for all candidates to look for running mates who meet their vision and mission in the project to keep Nigeria strong, united and secure.

We expect Nigerians to vote for pedigree, integrity and credibility.

“At this juncture, permit us, once again, to felicitate with new flagbearers of other political parties who emerged winners in the last two or three days, particularly the indefatigable young activist, Omoyele Sowore, a good friend of MURIC. We also congratulate him on his victory in the court case over intra-party squabbles. Sowore is a frontline activist. He is consistent. We have great hope in him leading this country whenever the opportunity arises.”

This had further shown how intolerant the Christians are, the schools were not established yesterday but since the 70s and our girls had been going with hijab to the schools so how come is now that they don't want our girls in their schools. it's just a way of discouraging our girl child education since they are not complaining of the boys. My suggestion is the government should give them the sch back and stop aiding them, you can't be aided with our public fund and dictate those you want in the school. they should do this within the period of six years so those that are in jss1 will have graduated with thier hijab on. The schools belong to them there is no argument but as long as you are funded by the state government you can't dictate to the state!!!!

Foreign Affairs / Drug Trafficking And The Saudi Sword by lafiask: 3:10pm On Apr 30, 2019
Mohammad Qaddam Sidq Isa wrote:

Following the execution of one Kudirat Afolabi, a Nigerian woman, by the Saudi Arabian authorities earlier this month for drug trafficking, reports emerged that eight Nigerians have already been executed in the Kingdom (probably in this year alone), while twenty-three others are currently on death row.

The federal government has come under renewed criticism for allegedly not doing enough to save Nigerians facing execution in Saudi Arabia, for drug trafficking and other crimes that attract capital punishment in the Kingdom.

It’s important to point out that capital punishment for drug trafficking was introduced in Saudi Arabia in 1986 when the then King Fahd bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud wrote to the Hai’at-Kibarul Ulama i.e. Council of Senior Scholars in the Kingdom under its then Chairman, Sheikh Abdul-Aziz bin Abdullah bin Baaz, seeking juristic thoughts on the appropriate judicial punishment for drug trafficking in view of the extremely destructive impacts of drugs on individuals and communities, as well as the sheer magnitude of the threat posed by drug trafficking to the Kingdom’s socio-economic well-being and political stability.

After sessions of thorough deliberations in light of relevant Shari’a jurisprudential principles on the bases of relevant Qur’anic and Sunnatic texts especially the Qur’anic verse 33 of Suratul-Ma’idah, the Council recommended the introduction of capital punishment as the appropriate judicial punishment for drug trafficking, and to serve as a maximum deterrent to other would-be Kingdom-bound drug traffickers.

By the way, the Council had obviously deliberated in the context of Ta’azir, a Shari’a judicial principle that allows eminent Muslim jurists to recommend punishments they deem appropriate for crimes not specifically addressed in the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah.

Anyway, it’s equally important to note that the process leading to the execution of a convicted drug trafficker in the Kingdom is exhaustive, contrary to what some people apparently assume. On average, the period between the arrest and execution of a convicted drug trafficker ranges between a year and a couple of years of investigations and trials.

A drug trafficking suspect in the Kingdom is always tried, at first, before a three-judge open court where he is provided with a translator if he can’t understand Arabic, and free defence lawyer services. The proceedings are held in as many court sessions as necessary leading to either his conviction or immediate acquittal, depending on the prosecution and defence evidence presented to the court.

Also, even if found guilty, the case file is automatically transferred to a five-judge court of appeal where the guilty verdict issued by the first court will be thoroughly scrutinized to uphold or quash it, depending on the judges’ findings.

Likewise, even if the court of appeal upholds the verdict, the case file is again automatically transferred to the five-judge Supreme Court of the Kingdom in Riyadh where the guilty verdict of the two previous courts will equally be exhaustively reviewed to uphold or quash, depending on its findings.

Though the Supreme Court decision is final, yet even if it upholds the guilty verdict, the case file is still automatically transferred to the King who will be briefed by his legal advisers before he issues a Royal Decree giving the go-ahead to carry out the execution. Also, the country of a non-Saudi convict is always duly informed through its embassy in Riyadh or consulate in Jeddah, before executing him.

In short, typically a person convicted of drug trafficking in the Kingdom has been tried by thirteen judges at three courts of different hierarchical jurisdictions. A convict is usually only informed of his imminent execution on the morning of his last day on earth.

I have witnessed a few public executions in Riyadh and Makkah. A typical public execution takes place in a mosque yard. Amid tight security, the convict is brought out from a prison van and led gently into the centre of the yard, handcuffed, leg-chained and blindfolded. He is made to kneel down. The executioner examines the convict’s kneeling posture and the balance of his head, apparently to ensure that he hits the right spot on the back of his neck. He (executioner) then takes a few steps back, draws his sword out of its sheath, moves closer to the convict with his glittering bare sword, and cuts off the convict’s head with one strong and swift strike.

Of course, the scene is so gory that even some of the policemen around can’t stand watching; they turn their backs shortly before the execution. Anyway, a prepared short announcement from a nearby public address van follows giving a summary of what the executed person had committed and the judicial process that led to his execution. Afterwards, the body and the head are loaded onto a mortuary van while a vacuum truck comes in to wash off the blood as the spectators disperse.

Obviously with the sheer amount of warnings continuously flowing around that drug trafficking attracts capital punishment in Saudi Arabia, and that the punishment is indeed carried out, the insistence of Saudi-bound drug traffickers to carry on anyway is the height of recklessness.

Now, while the federal government should improve its anti-drug trafficking measures, it’s equally important to tackle the crimes being perpetrated by some particularly callous drug traffickers said to be operating at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), where they take advantage of some unsuspecting Saudi-bound Umrah or Hajj travellers to plant drugs in their luggage hoping they wouldn’t attract exhaustive scrutiny at the Saudi airports in view of their unassuming appearance and apparent innocence. Though a few victims have been saved from the Saudi sword, thanks partly to the efforts of the Nigerian Consulate-General in Jeddah, others are still out there languishing in the misery of fear and constant uncertainty.

Politics / After Loss Of Ekiti PDP Gov Primary, Adeyeye List Fayose's Sin by lafiask: 12:57pm On May 12, 2018
After loss of Ekiti PDP gov primary, Adeyeye lists ‘sins’ of Fayose

Apparently embittered by the defeat he suffered at the Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election last Saturday, Dayo Adeyeye has revealed series of ‘sins’ the state governor, Ayodele Fayose has allegedly been committing.

Adeyeye, a former PDP national publicity secretary and a former Minister of State for Works, described Fayose as not only corrupt, but presiding over the “worst unprecedented looting of Ekiti treasury in history”.

Fayose’s anointed, the deputy governor of the state, Professor Kolapo Olusola, had defeated Adeyeye during the party primary, despite the third aspirant contesting for the PDP ticket for the July 14 governorship election, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, stepping down for Adeyeye.

Adeyeye, who resigned from the PDP after the election, made his allegation against Fayose when he featured on a programme on Voice 89.9 FM in Ekiti State.

He said, “We won’t allow Fayose to turn Ekiti into his private property, he is presiding over the worst unprecedented looting of Ekiti treasury in history.

“Fayose goes to Abuja every week with chartered flights which costs the state 14,000 dollars and he had spent N8 billion flying chartered planes in the last three-and-half years. He jerked up the cost of the Ado-Ekiti flyover project from N5 billion to N17.5 billion and you know what N17.5 billion can do in Ekiti. In Ado-Ekiti alone, he has acquired 44 new houses from the time he came to power till date, he will be made to account for them.

“The last record from the Debt Management Office (DMO) is that Ekiti is owing over N57 billion. This debt is incurred by (this current) government and not previous governments.

“Fayose has no plan for Ekiti. What he wants is a situation where he will be extorting N10 million, N6 million from senatorial and House of Representatives aspirants. That was why he brought Olusola. All Ekiti people must join hands to chase Fayose out of Ekiti. No past governor in Ekiti has stolen one tenth of what Fayose has stolen.

“I am not surprised about what is a happening to us in Ekiti. Fayose once said it on Fresh FM (Ibadan) that his father told him Ekiti people would serve him till his death. I cannot be part of those who will serve a miscreant perpetually.

“Abuja people have called me to nominate someone for the deputy governor while I go for Senate but I told them that it is not about me but collective interest of Ekiti people. Enough of this agony, enough of this slavery, enough of this stealing. It is a painful decision but I just have to take it because of the future of Ekiti.”

On what he plans to do next after dumping PDP he said, “We have resolved to leave the party for a new platform and we know that victory is guaranteed by God’s grace. It is not going to be easy, it is not going to be convenient but we will get there.”

CAN LIED: BUHARI IS NOT RUNNING AN ISLAMIC GOVERNMENT

17th May, 2017

PRESS RELEASE:

CAN LIED: BUHARI IS NOT RUNNING AN ISLAMIC GOVERNMENT

The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) and four other affiliated Christian unions yesterday accused President Muhammadu Buhari of running the country as a Muslim organization and neglecting the entire Christian faith. The other four Christian groups are Arewa Christians Association,Concerned Professional Christians, All Para-Church Organizations and Nigerian Christians in Diaspora.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) rejects this allegation. It is baseless, reckless, false and malicious. There is no iota of truth in CAN’s claims. It exists only in the figment of the writers’ imagination.

Contrary to CAN’s claim, both Christian and Islamic studies are available in public schools in the North unlike the South where every school has teachers of Christian studies but lacks teachers of Islamic studies. The South West case is even pathetic. Teachers of Islamic Studies are hardly employed and they are deliberately and treacherously diverted to teach other subjects. The aim behind this is to render them useless for Islamic Studies. Some school principals even refuse to allow teachers of Arabic and Islamic studies to teach what they are employed for. Many state schools’ boards have been pocketed by CAN for the purpose of eliminating Arabic and Islamic Studies from the South West, including Edo State.

It sounds amusing that CAN on one hand claims to be praying for President Muhammadu Buhari’s recovery yet on the other hand it accuses the Federal Government of lying about his health status. Is that what will facilitate the acceptance of the prayer? CAN is blowing hot and cold at the same time. We advise CAN to come out in the open and show its true colour. The Christian body should stop intimidating FG. To be ill is human, to heal divine.

CAN’s complaint about Nigeria’s participation in the Islamic solidarity football game is still the old song and it fits CAN’s main objective, namely, to isolate Nigerian Muslims from their counterparts in other parts of the world. Football and all games generally are known for their ability to unify humanity under one love. If CAN would have its way, Nigerian Muslims would not be allowed to perform hajj. It was the same complaint over Shari‘ah, Islamic bank, etc. When will CAN live and let live?

As professional lobbyists, we are not surprised that CAN is demanding Christian replacements (as if it is a right) for the suspended Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal and the Director General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA) Ayo Oke. This is primordial sentiment. Is it religious affiliation that will benefit Nigerians or competence and integrity?

CAN also complained that no Christian has been minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) since 1999. We will like to place this claim in its proper perspective. CAN has deliberately restricted its claim to 1999 for its parochial agenda. We must ask CAN what happened from the beginning?

Out of the nine ministers in office as FCT ministers from 1976 to 1999, six were Christians and the Muslims did not complain. Ex-President Obasanjo who picked Ibrahim Bunu, Muhammed Abba Gana and Nasir El-Rufai as ministers of the FCT from 1999 to 2007 was not a Muslim. So why should Buhari be crucified for that? Bala Muhammed was FCT minister from 2010 to 2015 under Goodluck Jonathan. How can anyone blame the Muslims for this? Afterall Jonathan is yet to announce his conversion to Islam.

CAN must stop misinforming Nigerians. Several factors determine the allocation of positions in politics. We therefore advise YOWICAN to make proper enquiries on issues like this before issuing public statements. YOWICAN also needs to brush up its knowledge of the Bible. “You will know the truth and the truth shall set you free” is not in John 3:38 as listed in its statement. It is in John 8:32. In fact there is no John 3:38. Chapter 3 of the Book of John ends at verse 36.

It amounts to blackmail and arm-twisting to accuse Buhari of running Nigeria like an Islamic organization. But Nigerians are wiser today than in yesteryears. They no longer yield to blackmail like before and they will only respect claims based on informed opinion.

To round up, MURIC advises YOWICAN to grow up, to dismiss its infantile propensities and think first of Nigeria. Instead of raising false alarm on a daily basis, we urge CAN to join hands with its Muslim neighbours in building a virile economy, a stable polity and a peaceful nation. We should make less noise. We envision for Nigerians a land full of opportunities where no Christian or Muslim shall be denied the right to work or worship anywhere he or she chooses. We must stop sacrificing excellence on the altar of mediocrity. The parameter should not be religion. It should be competence.
