You are right. Nigeria is a jungle where people do what they like. Some of these quacks who parade themselves as Dentists and do procedures that they are not trained to do work in a government hospital or retired from a government hospital. Some even steal some dental equipment and instrument from the government hospital to set up their own mushroom clinic. Others will set up a clinic after they have looked for government job without success (That's why some people erronously believe Dentists look for Job. Dentists don't look for job. It's Jobs that look for them.).

Sometimes, even Dentists enable these people. Some of them call Dentists to come to their clinic to treat patients based on a commission.

Nigeria and Nigerians are something else.

Oga dentistry is the poorest medical practice in Nigeria. Even if optometrists compete with 10 other specialties, they will still outgross dentists.
Go around and compare optometry eye clinics with dental clinics. Like I said before even a busy optician will outgross a dental clinic.
I have been in healthcare and right from the rural to highstreet practice in Nigeria, dentistry and optometry is incomparable. Not comparable. Even in hospitals, will you compare the grossing of optometry unit, not the whole eye clinic, mind you, with that of dental clinic?
What is the use of a prestige that derives its life only from referral to another profession. Dentistry will fade into professional darkness but for the patronage of organized medicine. Who is going to manage craniomaxiilofacial carcinoma? Who is going to manage dental anarchy?Who is going to manage bucco- pharyngeal cancer? Who is going to manage maxillomandibular fracture? Who is going manage dental pathologies with systemic diseases such as HIV,DM,anemia,sarcodiosis,crohn disease etc? Do you all know oral physicians manage all dental cases with systemic manifestations without writing any consult to any physician if he or she likes?

We all know all over the world that there is limitation to what dental surgeon can do due to their preliminary focus? But that doesn't exclude them for not being a medical doctor.

This is my summary. A MBBS who went to specialise in hematologist is a medical doctor and also a hematologist. A BDS who graduates is also a medical doctor and a dentist.The teaching from 100 level till 5level speaks or explains it already.

Even the UK you’ve been quoting, has different associations for the two very different professions.

Even in Nigeria, we have association that binds both which is mdcn and also association that indicates Dental only and medical only.

The truth is that anywhere all over the world,dentistry can't be separated from medicine.

You guys should not use Nigeria as a case study that only in Nigeria, that dentist are linked with medicines.

There are 4 specialties that you can't tell me that being a dentist doesn't make you medical doctor.Oral pathologist, oral medical practitioner, oral radiologist and oral maxillofacial surgeon.Check out the syllabuses outside Nigeria, you will see upon graduation ,you are MD along your specialist certification.

The reason why there is distinctive features of dental or medical over medical and dental is for each to have a focus.

Dentistry is a gross part of the whole body.History of dentistry was purely done after completing MBBS and later fractionalize to dentistry as a specialty like o and g ,Opthalmology, ent etc.lt was the voluminousness that led to the separation. In dentistry, there about 11 specialties.

Dentistry and medicine are the same.One is general and the other is Dental.

We have many branches of medicine just like Opthalmology, Orthopedic, Dermatology, Gynecology not limited but include Dentistry.Dentistry was never a course done preliminary before,it started after completing general medicine,then individual who chooses to focus on oral and maxillofacial region opts for dentistry with additional 2 yrs intense and focused dental education.

It was later realised that having first degree in medicine and later specialise in dentistry was taken more years,imagine a student spending 12ys to become a certified dental surgeon.In view of this, dentistry was removed totally and reorganized into a direct degree with same course of syllabus with medicine till Part 4.So the first MB and Second MB are both taken by medicine and dentistry.Then the last two years left , medicine will resume Pediatrics, (Medicine and surgery 1,2,3(,O and G ,Com Med and graduate while dentistry will resume Medicine and surgery 1 only, pediatrics , Opthalmology,ENT,Plastic, Anaesthesia, Radiology for 1yr and write MB exam.The following 1yr+ left is for dental posting.It is only a novice will come here and compare dentistry with optometry or physiotherapy.No course is inferior to any course ,all are professional courses.Physiotherapist are lovely in practice and same to optometrist.

For medicine and dentistry,they are insaparable.As a dentist,you can spend 18mnths upon graduation to earn MBBS and as physician,you will spend 3yrs to become a dentist.Look at that!
