Phones / Re: Why're Telcos Converting Foreign Phone Numbers To 080 Without Users' Consent? by lockedOut: 10:53pm On Jan 05, 2018
This is actually a fraudulent activity by the foreign company to dupe Nigerian telecom operators.

By tweaking the system to show the call originated as a local number they end up paying lower interconnect rates compared to when its international termination.

ikorodureporta:
Some days ago, a friend i was chatting with online said he called & i ddnt pick his call. I checked my missed calls but couldnt find his number among the missed calls. So, i did not believe that he called...

So, later i picked a naija line (080...) & he was d one on line. Dis guy is not in Naija & not aware of the changes too. I cross-checked the missed calls & found out that the number's slghtly diff from the one he used recently...

Why're the telcos doing this without our consent? Hope they'r not tapping our lines....

Career / How I Did It by lockedOut: 6:59pm On Jan 19, 2017
Let me share my experience here maybe someone can learn from it, For any undergraduate reading this post, please make sure you come out with good grades and try as much as possible to read things outside of school work, I have come to realize that School alone does not cut in the Corporate world. In my short sojourn I have realized brilliance alone while very important but please add a little bit of outside knowledge (by being abreast of the latest happenings outside school) and that can be the difference between an ok job and a very good job. Most people might be wondering what I am driving at, I will get at it very soon.

Let me give a brief background on myself, I graduated in 2010 finished serving in 2011 and did not get my first job until 2013, truth is I was not a smart/brilliant student as I barely scaled through university, but one thing I had was access to information (Nairaland played a big part). I was always current on the latest trends in the world, read a lot of comments in the career section on Recruitment processes. There were times I was sad because I did not graduate with a good grade but then a recurring advice from the experienced guys on nairaland (dont want to mention names) back then was the importance of Professional certifications and how it aided in getting you to the front of the HR in Nigeria. I studied computer science so I decided to go down the Certification lane. I was lucky to have parents that supported me a bit financially by paying for some of the exams and I also paid for some with the money I saved from NYSC, before long I had my CCNP, Microsoft certifications (this ones were cheap back then 6500 per exam) and ITIL. I was also scammed into believing I will get a fantastic job after all these certifications but reality was different.

I knew I had to look for experience to match the certifications and true to the advices, the interviews started coming in Lagos, Abuja and so many other cities but no job came until 2013, got the first job and my first salary was 75k even with CCNP, Microsoft Exams and my ITIL. I had nothing to bargain when I had no real world experience, Seven months into the job I got another job double the pay and I moved from a net monthly income of 75k to 152k. When I got my second job I knew ok, the certifications do help, all it needed was patience. After settling down, I invested again in some sets of certifications.

Like I said earlier brilliance alone was not enough, I kept checking online blogs on the latest trends in the IT world, I discovered IT administration was becoming obsolete, companies were now outsourcing and shifting towards cloud deployment but then one role that kept up showing up was IT Security, so many posts on how there was shortage of professionals in the IT security so I decided to also follow the path since it was obvious IT security was the trending career path, with my CCNP knowledge i started reading books, it was easier to understand the concepts and then I took the certifications Comptia Security +, CCNA Security and CISSP. As soon as I wrote the CISSP exam I told myself i need to have a return on investment before I could write any more exams. Then I started looking for jobs because I was already tired of my job and my skill set was just being wasted because I was not doing anything related to IT security. I began my job search again and it took over a year after my CISSP to get my third job.

I have come to realise that brilliance alone is not enough to progress in life, for some it will come easy (uncles and brothers helping to get jobs) but for some of us, we have to go the hard way. In my own view, I will rank the three benefits for getting a good job in Nigeria.

1: Good grades (most important unless you want to go the hard way....professional qualifications)
2: Intelligence to read blogs/new and attend free events on latest happenings in your chosen field.
3: Networking with friends, uncles, and neighbours in your chosen field.

The recession is biting hard but people are still getting jobs, my friend changed jobs twice last year from a local company to a multinational company with double pay after he was laid off at the beginning of the year. To the currently unemployed reading this, stick in there the job is just round the corner, dont be too big to take a job in your chosen field and don't be too quick to take any job as it might lead to dissatisfaction.

For those whose parents advice on going on masters, while it is good in some chosen profession, I will suggest you work a bit say two years then try and make up your mind after then, Not all fields require a master degree initially especially in Nigeria to gain entry into them for those that require masters degreee for a foothold in such profession, Nairaland is a good source of information, make use it very well. My first job i got on nairaland, second one was advertised here and the third I did not bother to look for it here but i know it will be here. \

While searching for my third job i had a checklist of websites I check everyday after work. Below you will see them, they might help you as well, as there is no online job that is posted that any of this three sites will not pick.

1: Nairaland thread owned by Debbie.
2: hotnigerianjobs
3: justjobs
4:linkedin (wonder what went wrong the jobs section is .....)
5:ngcareers
6:fosad consulting
7:gvalliance
8:glassdoor.

I hope this post inspires you to read more sorry for the long post though.

While I believe that there should be a thorough financial investigation into what happened in the last twenty of governance because just going for Mrs Deziani alone would seems like a witch hunt. The Buhari government must also look at the obasanjo regime, the abdusalami regime, the babangida regime too. So that the loot of yester years will be returned to the nations coffer. Anything Short of this will be tantamount to selective justice.

Mr Akintan I'd doubt that you are a real yoruba man because no right thinking yoruba man will write the rubbish you are wrote except you are a beneficiary of the stolen loot by Mrs Deziani. Anyway it would do us alot of good if the anti-corruption crusade can be extended backward rather than stop at the table of the government of the last 6 six years and also state and local governments account too should be looked because I believe more corruption is going on there.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Telling An Interviewer How Much You Were Being Paid In Your Last Job by lockedOut: 7:18pm On Mar 12, 2015
I think most times it depends on the type of company you are interviewing with, Some companies have a scale for every position while some don't have. At least in IT i know of a company where two people do the same job and the difference in their salary is more than double each other. I usually take the market woman approach, I always inflate my salary, if they cannot pay me then someone else will. If you are good at what you do you must be able to price yourself the way you want to earn.

I have come to realize most people do not really know their worth and they tend to be contented easily. I have seen guys with superior knowledge earn way less than their true market worth because they just either contented/too timid to move on.

For me I try as much as possible to increase what I earn so that it puts me in a good bargaining point, yes I make my research about the companies I am interviewing with but then what if the company does not operate a flat structure? At that point it becomes what you bargained with when you are being employed and really hardly do companies without such salary structures always want to double or triple your salary if you don't go the market woman way.

Anyways everyone with what works for them!

I am a pastor. It will not be strange if your wife is the only experiencing it. Do a trend check on your finance, family health, job etc.

If the trend confirms your wife's fears, then it is real. Compare the above trends before and while you are in your present location.

Should you relocate if the trend prove that it is the compound? ANSWER: if you can gain your wife's confidence, don't. Demons should run away from fire of God and not otherwise. But you must get a deliverance gifted pastor to work there. Your family must be prayerful. After sometime it will stop.

If you can't gain your wife's confidence, then relocate. Demons are real. Don't mind the all comers rubbish they say here. I once handled a case like this and the couple are still living there.

So the excuse you are giving is a trial and error? If he moves out and the same keeps happening will you refund the earlier rent? Oga think well, they have lived in that house for 5 years. The way nollywood/poverty has bastardised our senses ehn!

Stop! Why must you say that? Don't you know that some people are more spiritually in tune than others? I know of a man whose brother-in-law gave his guest house to stay in and they lost their 3 children there after he had evil dreams about his in-law, but the wife disagreed and refutted them as mere dreams. After the death of their 3rd child, they left the state entirely (the man's business crumbled and his in-law didn't allow them worship at their own church, he said his church was better). This said man (dreamer) started all over again at the age of 45 and was able to make something good out of his life and family. Their lives turned around remarkably and their fiath in God grew stronger.

I am sure you saw this in a nollywood movie! Why must you lie to make a point?

Sure, IT changes faster than you can blink these days. The reason? Newer and more efficient ways of solving problems.
Guys that work for vendors / OEMs are at an advantage in being able to keep up with the pace of change in IT, because they must master their product portfolios. Hence, they get regular updates, courses. Vendors often need to get their personnel certified to maintain their partner status with the OEM.

Future for me? still on the lookout for the OEM/Vendor opportunity. That will precede my graduation to the DC. I am already on the storage path now...tinkering with NetApp, (EMC coming soon).

@mellorix, mikkybrick happy new year everyone, what do you guys think about security? CISSP, CEH and Security +?
Looking towards that for my 2014 certifications think that will be a main focus for companies as cyber crime become more prevalent and companies wake up to the need to protect their networks and infrastructure as a whole.
What are your thoughts on this.....Nigeria wise?

I find this thread very insightful, I would like to know how many days (legally) an employer has to give an employee before termination of employment in the case the worker has not committed any offence. Why I am asking is, at my present place of work, a lady was just disengaged, after more than 5 years of service and the best reason the company was her position is now redundant.

Don't want to go into details, but isn't it right for employers to treat employees right? What right does an employee has to fight back if not to show dissent as well? Like someone said if you treat your workers right you will be treated well.

Career / Re: When We Recruit In Nigeria . . . by lockedOut: 12:51pm On Nov 14, 2013
Wallie: I think the fundamental issue is supply far out-stripping demand. When you only have 2 positions open and you get 1000 applications, you need an objective way of disqualifying a large majority of the applicants before looking at subjective qualifications. Certifications/degrees are used as the "gateman." For you to see oga, you must have the necessary degree because oga is too busy to see everybody that walks in.

However, the smart applicants will have the requisite minimum degree and/or respond directly to the skills sought.

With regard to MBAs, most reputable schools in the US won’t admit an MBA applicant without real world experience because most companies won’t be interested in your after graduation.

I go with this 100% it now depends on the recruiter knowing what he or she is looking for. The world is becoming too cumbersome to dedicate all resources on one task alone.

Right now supply truly outweighs demand, there are actually those who are qualified but do not have the experience and the best way to stand out is to have a distinct cv (qualification wise) because that will definately get them in front of the recruiter. Its left to the recruiter to weed out its candidate. Blaming the recuiter for the problem is quite unfair, the recuiter did not make the market over competitive due to the available jobs.

Then to the issue of craze for MBA its still part of the process of standing out in a crowd, also in most cases life is a rat race!

just to buttress your point, the popular Arabic numerals is actually known as the Indian numerals by the Arabs but becuase they exported it to the world through Islam we all know it as the Arabic numerals while the Arabs themselves call it the Indian numeral.

Religion / Re: Why Is African Traditional Religion Seen As Demonic? by lockedOut: 10:59am On Nov 01, 2013
alnaijiri: Traditional African religions, like traditional religions everywhere in the world, are lacking in morality, but rather focuses their attention on superstitions, magic, charms, etc. With the advent of science, an educated person cannot possibly believe in that former mumbo-jumbo. However, religions that preach morality manage to stand the test of time.

Religion shouldn't be about race or colonialism. Did not the pagans of Europe who worshipped Odin or Zeus give up their beliefs to believe in one God (and unfortunately in the blasphemous notion that God has a son). Did not the people of the Middle East give up their various pagan gods in order to live in the light of Islam?

^^^ I totally disagree with this notion. "Lacking in Morality" are you saying there were no morals before the advent of western religion in Africa? Agreed some ways were not perfect (ignorance to a certain level due to the available knowledge) but lacking morality is just wrong. There is this popular saying "Kill them all and let God choose his own people" This statement was made by a christian crusader when they were going to take over Jerusalem from the Muslim Jihadist, a warrior came to him and asked Sir what should we do with the women, slaves and children, his answer was what I wrote above. I am just sighting an example for the religion you are claiming upheld morality.

Now to the civilization part, have you ever heard of the Egyptian Civilization As far back as 2000AD those people performed Brain surgeries and built the pyramids of Egypt without any form of iron, till today the Pyramids stand as one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Eratosthenes is a famous Greek mathematician/philosopher and he learnt his trade in Egypt (earliest form of schooling method). I can go on and on about the sophistication of the Egyptian civilization and also let you know when Egypt prospered their God was an African God and they practiced African religion (checkout Ramses)

Today Egypt is known as an Arab nation and people forget that before the Arabic religion came in Egypt was once the cradle of civilization. People like you will sit down and due to unavailability of knowledge claim African religion lacked morality. Africans were wearing clothes long before their European counterparts because we were knowledgeable about our nudity.

All the religions you have mentioned above have benefited solely the originators of those religions. China is a super power today and I do not see the Chinese practicing either Christianity or Islam, so you see your deductions are flawed. If i misinterpreted expatiate more.

Sports / Re: FIFA's World Player Of The Year Shortlist by lockedOut: 4:27pm On Oct 29, 2013
It is funny how FIFA deliberately ignore South America and give the best player in the world to the european based players. The FIFA world player of the year should be nicknamed FIFA European Footballer of the year. If FIFA watches just one championship and bases it polls on that same competition i think that is absolutely wrong.

Players based in South America are sometimes better than some of these european based players but because FIFA has failed to look at the right place we keep missing out on the real talents of the game. I keep wondering what Eden Hazard is looking for in this list, If the world player of the year is not a true reflection of the world game then it should rather be named what it truly represent....FIFA EUROPEAN FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR.

If YAYA Toure can make the list, I wonder why Lacine Traore or (forgotten the Burkina Faso wingers name) cant make the list. I am not making a case for the Nigerian team but I think going by our exploits Keshi should have been named in the best coach award. Imagine seeing Ancelotti on the list with all the richly assembled stars he used to win the French League moreover what is Wenger doing on that list, is that to placate e English followers of the game? The award for a long time has been a joke, a marketing gimmick to lure the best players from other parts of the world. What a shame.

Religion / Re: Why Is African Traditional Religion Seen As Demonic? by lockedOut: 3:55pm On Oct 24, 2013
okeyxyz: Christianity is not the problem(I speak as a christian), rather it is our low self esteem and racism on the part of the world leaders/elites that has reduced us to this level of self hate. If you are deprived a lot in terms of good education, economic empowerment, cultural identity, ownership and pride, then it's only natural that you end up hating yourself and trying to identify more with the white man than with your own attributes. This inferiority complex is what led to the misuse of christianity, besides the misunderstanding of it. The same misunderstanding and misuse of religion you guys are doing here by attacking the shadow(christianity) instead of the substance.

One very typical example: Put a picture of a black girl besides a picture of a white girl, at least 95 percent of black men will say the white girl is more beautiful. Even on occasions where we might agree that a black girls is beautiful, then all here features must be white and only her color is black. What has this got to do with christianty? Nothing. Rather it is our low self esteem has made us hate anything resembling us. Our music artists now feature white girls in their videos and majority of us praise them for making beautiful, "world class" videos, we tell ourselves the lie that it is because we want a global appeal and that is why we feature white girls. Only i.di.ots who don't think(which happens to be about 80 percent of people) believe this line.

^^^ While inferiority complex is another plaque afflicting the black race, I doubt if it is what is at play here when we relate it to African religion being demonic. Maybe you can explain further.

Religion / Re: Why Is African Traditional Religion Seen As Demonic? by lockedOut: 1:07pm On Oct 24, 2013
I have actually been thinking of this issue for quite some time now. Let me start by saying the foreign religions came and said oh, don't believe in stones and woods but believe in nothing! Because the only reason we believe the foreign God exist is because we believe it in our hearts, at times I wonder why people do not see the similarities in both African and foreign religions and also miss the ultimate fact that if the westerners had not succeeded in conquering and colonizing our forefathers we won't be practicing these religions, but that again is a story for another day.

To the issue of African traditional religion being demonic,I think Nollywood only reigned in on the act, the problem actually started with bad rulers in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. It is normal for people to find or seek for a way to overcome poverty especially in our setting where not being affluent is seen as a curse or bondage. The rise of the modern day religion and bastardization of the African religion started when things started to go bad for the economy, poverty was on the rise, jobs became scarce, belief in the system waned, then came the new religion leaders, if you believe in the true white God, you will prosper, he will make you wealthy also the grandma in your village is the cause of the problem because she practices African religion. For someone who is already poor and hungry any solution is a solution, it probably worked for some either legally or illegally they became rich and testimonies started arriving, with it came the spread of the news, OH the man of God can perform miracles and others started thronging to the religious houses to see and experience for themselves what they have heard, what will actually have happened if they remained where they were and worked harder. To keep its followers and bring in more followers they needed to kill the opposition. How best to kill the opposition if not to label it as being demonic and call everything it stands for demonic! What I find amusing is that an African Muslim will never call an African Christian a demon rather they play the ignorance card.

Nollywood is just a projection of the society, a sector dominated by teeming followers of this new found belief in the religious system also had to catch in on the new trend of bashing the African religion saying things they have never experienced and basing their assumptions on what they have heard not what they have seen but what they have been told. It was a match made in heaven, a set of people who can't believe they are poor with all their work and someone coming to tell them it is the work of the demon they are not rich rather than face the real evil demons that come to pray with them. I will try as much as possible not to make this a political debate. Add all the following together,

The seemingly bad economic situation

A large number of people who are poor but want a solution to their poverty level and are afraid of taking on the government

A religion that its followers are already diminishing

A new religion that profers solution to the poverty solution and needs to grow

The new religion realises for it to gain dominance it has to kill off opposition

Followers of the new religion who are ignorant of what the African religion stands for, are too lazy to find out and ultimately want to become rich.

A section of these new followers who are into the story telling industry see the reigning thing, the new religion presents them with a large followers who are looking for excuses to justify the lies they have been told about the African religion and it becomes a fire meeting petrol, it leads to a widespread adoption of the lies ( a real case of if a lie is told continually people will take it as truth), the younger generations who do not know anything and like our gullible fathers (not grandfathers now) we also imbibe the new culture and its marketing scheme of bastardizing its competitor!

If religion we practice truly alters our political situation is another discussion for another day.

To cut the long story short, foreign religion was what contributed largely to the present situation of our people seeing african traditional religion as being demonic!
