TV/Movies / Re: South African Movie Industry Vs Nollywood by Longesson(m): 3:42pm On Apr 01, 2006 |
This s like comparing Bollywood and Hollywood!!!! Hollywood = QUALITY Bollywood = QUANTITY of crap Patritism aside, SA movies are better than Naija movies. We just seem to have enough to satisfy our taste which is becoming more and more crap. Storyline-wise oops!!!WE HAVE NO STORYLINE. I bet some of our movies don't even have proper scripts. They just have the Director's idea of what the scene would look like and the actors use their own words. That's wny our movies are overflowing with cliche and the next 3 scenes are always predictable. Only a few studios particularly MAINFRAME can be said to have the intersting in taking time to produce quality. But they are rare. I mean, I can easily name 4 South African movies that beat all our movies hands down and produced to European standards (Sarafina, That Gods must be crazy, Yesterday, and Tsotsi) Make we no lie, Sollywood beat NOLLYWOOD!!! 1 Like |

Romance / Re: Should I Give My First Love A Second Chance? by Longesson(m): 11:45am On Mar 30, 2006 |
There are two main parts to your life - what is behind you and what is ahead of you. You can't change the first part, but what you do now will have a spill-over effect on the second part. The answer of what you will do will not be provided by anyone on this forum because it is inside you and you will live with ur decision On Your Own, Think about these and decide, I just know, if I were yout current guy, I'd feel irritated if you choose the former guy over me and I may drop u first because ur even considering dropping me calls into question the fact that you say you love me. And if I was the former boyfriend, I'll know deep inside I'm not asking you to do something reasonable when I ask you leave another guy for me. If I really loved u that much, why did I stay out of touch in the first place. As I said, it's ur life and ur decision. Do it right!!! |
Fashion / Re: Why Are Our Ladies Not Dressing Decently? by Longesson(m): 11:33am On Mar 30, 2006 |
Our ladies are dressing comfortably. We can't answer the question "why are they dressing indecently" for as long as we don't have a common agreement/definition of what decent or indecent dressing is. DO WE? That is Seun's point, which I agree with wholeheartedly "Decent dressing is a matter of interpretation" and I think we should leave it as that. In some families in Naija and all over, even wearing any type of trousers by a woman is considered indecent, no matter how baggy it is. The mantra of this generation is "As long as it is comfortable for you, O GA GOES!!!" And I think that makes more sense than us spending precious time that can be spent or more prouctive activities arguing what is decent dressing and what isn't, |
Romance / Re: Give Me One Reason To Love A Nigerian Man by Longesson(m): 11:25am On Mar 30, 2006 |
There is also the other side to this story. I am male/Nigerian/27 yo living in the UK and just as u are more attracted to men of other countries, I find myself more attracted to women of other countries rather than Nigerians. Even other African countries. Upon analysis, I think it is a case of familiarity bringing contempt. Even though we are meeting for thE first time, we actually go into interactions with so much bias and assumptions in the air without giving the other party the chance to express who they are as individuals. because we come from the same country, started in the same reality, have the same value systems and are now in a different environment , we let all our prejudices from the past to cloud our judgements. MY OWN STEREOTYPES: I think Naija girls, here in the UK, "form" or act compared to most other girls.I think they are more materialistic. I think they are looking for the next eligible bachelor with a job to tie down in marraige FOREVER.I think they are not as adventurous as girls from other places. I think BUT U KNOW WHAT, I KNOW THIS IS NOT ALL TRUE!!!But that is the stereotype I get from my interactions. And I probably brought it with me from Naija!!! It's like that girl/guy who we all went to school with, who speaks English through their nose even though the closest they have been to Jand is Ajao Estate on the way to the airport. You know how we dislike them and considered them fake? That's the way we Naija people feel about our own people here. We never admit it, but that's the way it is. That's why I'd rather chase an English girl who, if she likes you, would kiss you 10 minutes after meeting you while a Naija girl would act like you don't exist even if she likes you. Yet I would be the first person to think the Naija girl is "loose" if she kisses me afetr 10 minutes. YES IT IS COMPLEX, but NA SO E BE!!! It's about value systems. Because we have the same value systems, it's difficult for us to transfer it into this foreign culture when there are things about the other culture's value systems that we like and want to indulge in. Remember the law in physics that says "Like charges attract, and unlike charges repel", That's the best summary for the situation. SO WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT IT? 1. Treat each person as an individual and not based on their skin colour or our assumptons of their culture 2. Be aware how much of your judgement is clouded by stereotypes and gaurd against this 3. Spread the love - NAIJA WOMAN to NAIJA MAN and vice versa. WHEN COLD CATCH FINISH, NA MY NAIJA WOMAN I WAN TAKE KILL AM!!! |
Dating And Meet-up Zone / Re: Seen Any Pretty Ghanian Lady? Lol by Longesson(m): 2:05pm On Mar 29, 2006 |
From a Naijaman who has sampled the beauty Ghana has to offer (having sampled at least 4 of their daughters) and been in Ghana at least 8 different times, I disagree that Ghana does not have fine women. Why in the world do u think I kept going back? I am very picky in the kind of women I sample and I did have a spread to select from Yes, like every country in the world, they have their own fair share of UGLY women, perhaps more, but that's not an excuse to generalise. I also agree with an earlier post that the girls from the north are more beautiful than ashanti girls. Some of the people in the north of Ghana are Hausa and have relation to our own Hausa. Even we, Naija guys, know that our Hausa and Fulani girls are more beautiful per capita than Yoruba and Ibo girls (apology to anyone offended, but I am Yoruba too and I have to be honest). However by saying that, I have fallen into the trap of this post which is GENERALISATION!!! Plus, what is the problem about being black. Our Naija stereotype of Ghanaians is that they are all black like charcoal.Again, fa-fa-fa-foul. I used to think so till I saw one of the most beautiful yellow African women I have ever laid eyes on in Ghana; Pure Mammy-water specs. Needless to say, she is one of the 4 and she changed the stereotype for me forever MY VERDICT: Ghana has it's own fair share of hotties, u may just nor see them if you don't go visit the country. PLUS - Shine Ur Eyes- OPEN IT AND U WILL SEE!!! BigBrother has spoken |
Romance / Re: Why Do Guys Flirt? by Longesson(m): 11:42am On Mar 29, 2006 |
2 different things: FLIRTING - Women do it more than men. She smiles at u in a sexy way She tickles you even though she doesn't want you She calls you sweetheart even though another guy is banging her. That is FLIRTING and it comes more naturally with women than men 'cos women are more touchy- feely than men. PLUS, they do it so subconsciously but we are TOO aware of it. CHEATING- Aha, for that one, men have it wired into their genes. Much as we try, We live in a male-oriented world, there are more women than men, It is kind of a challenge on how many women you can bed, WE JUST CAN'T HELP IT!!! IT IS A GAME FOR US!!! Something we can boast to the other guys about 'cos they are the competition. It's TESTOSTERONE induced!!! PLUS it is our natural response to all the women FLIRTING with us everyday Maybe not every man or woman is like this, but this thread is generalising anyway and that's the way it is for the majority |
Romance / Re: Is It Right For A Graduate To Marry A Non Graduate by Longesson(m): 11:29am On Mar 29, 2006 |
NEWS FLASH!!! Bill Gates' wife is divorcing him, BECAUSE HE DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL!!!! Who gives a "rat's arse" if one person is a graduate or not? Next we'll ask if a First Class can marry someone with a Third Class? People should spend more time thinking how they can be more productive with their university or "glorified secondary school" degrees rather than wondering if that should be an additional criteria in the search for a life partner. Don't we have enough criteria already(age, race, sex, height, religion, ethnic origin, family background etc etc etc etc) MY VERDICT: It is mortally WRONG for A Graduate To Marry A Non Graduate. Anyone caught engaging in this act should he executed in 7 different ways |
Romance / Re: Why Do Some Men Inteprete Friendliness As "interest" by Longesson(m): 11:21am On Mar 29, 2006 |
If the signs that a woman likes a guy and the signs that she is just being friendly were not so alike If a woman playing hard to get (which y'all do) and a woman meaning NO were not expressed in similar ways If we did not have situations were women eventually fell in "whatever" with guys they initially said NO to If women did not prefer persistent men to men who went away at the first NO And if people were not treated as ABNORMAL if they were didn't have a relationship Then maybe, JUST MAYBE, men would not misinterprete friendliness with interest. So my question is HOW DIFFERENT ARE THEY ANYWAYS? |

Career / Re: Are Nigerian 'Graduates' Really Graduates? by Longesson(m): 5:35pm On Mar 03, 2006 |
What is the point of university or any education system at all, ? to teach people how to think or what to think to teach people how to make what they learn relevant or to just expose them to "facts" to show facts or application of facts The problems with the Nigerian university system in my own opinion, is that the focus is more on: , the grade than the education Because we are told the purpose of studying is to get that job in that big company which finally only very few get. Hence every child gets into the university to study medicine, engineering, law, accounting and no one really applies to the university for core subjects that have their own place in shaping society like philosophy, micro-biology, agriculture. Or even when they get "shafted" into this courses lots of time out of desperation, they end up going back to work in a bank or to become teachers because the course does not equip them to apply their knowledge in our society.People are more obsessed with getting their 1st class and 2.1s rather than getting real knowledge/wisdom. Plus our examination system is also crap so the people with higher grades are not necessarily the smartest ones, , on teaching people what to think not helping them understand the thinking behind that fact. How many opportunities do you have to disagree with your professor and have an good argument on a subject in class.Nope, u start from the perspective that the professor knows and you don't so u shut up and listen. When we get into the world of work or to developed countries, we realise how really ignorant lots of our professors are. , to feed people with "facts" constantly without exploring the application in everyday life situations Nigerian universities are filled with lecturers who never worked outside the university, so they have little real experience with trends and advancements in their fields and so they teach "book" theory rather than applicability because truth-be-told, they can't apply anything. They teach you other people's theories but do not have opinions of their own. They pass you if you can memorise and remember the other person's theory but fail you if you produce your own thinking. How many of our many BSc, MSc or PHD thesis can be applied to create change that the country so desperately cries for. What is the purpose of doing research if it is not converted into something useful? Nigerians by nature are smart which is why they will do very well in universities abroad where they are allowed to think. But I have to agree, our university system creates half baked graduates who know the theory but not the application which is what the world wants to see. I currently work in the education sector in London and when I see all the things our systems lack, I realise why we are the under-developed world and they 1st world here, SO WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO ABOUT IT??Are we just gonna talk talk talk in typical Naija style or are we ready to change something, I have some idea of a plan to start something but need like-minded individuals, if you are interested click https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-7712.0.html |
