ONE OF THE FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE SUCCESS OF YOUR FARM IS HOUSINGS *hutches*
1. Size of the hutch is very important. Rabbits are usually Territorian when they are matured usually 1 in a rooms..
They can be together at weaners and growers stage Size of hutch is very important has it have effect on the production.
A compartment usually 24 inches wide, 24 inches breadth , and 16 to 18 inches high ( 24-by-24-by-16)inches
Or 2ft by 2ft by 16 inches
This size can house a breeding doe and kitts.. You can increase the size base on your preference but shouldn't be lesser
*TWO TYPES OF FLOORS ARE USED IN HUTCHES*

� *Wire-mesh floors* are used extensively where a self-cleaning cage is desired. They are a necessity in commercial farm, because it's not labor intensive unlike solid floors which you have to wash and clean everyday
� *Solid floor* : concrete or plank are use as floor of cage. This types of floors is a old method. There is need for daily cleaning. Washing of each compartment daily its labor intensive. And some hidden poo are usually serve as breeding room for infections
The floor should be net based care must be taken when selecting base net
*Galvanized ½by½net of 1.2 or 1.5 Guage* is suitable for rabbit base net
½by½net wire that will prevent small kits that escape the nest box from passing through and away from the safety of the hutch and mother.
� Do not use bokoharam net for the floors, because it rust within short periods of time and also leads to sore hocks and other sores on the feet of rabbits, leading to infections and eventual production losses.

*ARRANGEMENTS OF THE HUTCH*

Whether you arrange the hutches in single, double, or triple tiers depends. On the farm capacity and available land
*Triple tiers* is suitable to fully utilize a small piece of land for rabbit production. In situations where there is no much space, triple tiers are very effective in managing space
*The following must be put into consideration while constructing triple tiers.*

1. waste management. :ability to collect waste from each step without falling on the step beneath it. There some cage where waste urine and poo � from step 1 will be falling on step 2 which later lead to poor hygiene and breeding room for infection. Proper waste management must be put in place while constructing triple tiers
2. *easy access to each compartment* : the height must be reasonable, some 3 tiers that are not constructed well may be too high for farmers to reach the top tiers. which reduce intensity of the management. A Well constructed 3 tiers you don't need a ladder to reach the top tiers..

The rabbit hutch should not be placed where there is direct sunlight. There should be provisions for shelter, as heat do affects the growth and reproduction of rabbit

1. A GOOD HOUSING : must protect you rabbit from harsh weather. Either heat or cold.

5. Easy access.. There must be easy access to all compartment and easy movement for the farmers too

DRINKER : are container of water to rabbit.. Its wrong practice to assume rabbit don't drink water. Just like we assume back then .. Water is very important in growth and productivity of rabbit.. As shortage of water for pregnant rabbit may prone it to cannibalism

Cannibalism in rabbitry in simple term it's when a rabbit eats its own kits, flesh of another rabbits or of itself.

There are many factors that cause the cannibalism. It can be

1) *managerial factors*
2) *hereditary factors*

*Managerial factors* that prone a rabbits (doe) to cannibalism Because a good doe may become a bad doe as a result of cultural practices in the farm.. A good doe that is exposed to
1. fear by predators
2. Unusual noise
3. shortage of water before kindling
4. Shortage of feed
5. Mating premature doe. Inexperienced
6. Inclusion of blood meal in feed ingredients
Rabbits that are exposed to the above Are likely to exhibit cannibalism.. There are many cases that a doe practice cannibalism as a result of inexperience and won't repeat cannibalism in subsequent litters. A grace of second litter is advise.. And doe that practice cannibalism more than one time should be culled or slaughter...

*Hereditary factor* A doe rabbit have the potential to practice cannibalism. From the fact they consume their Kits placenta. Even the rabbit that practice cannibalism and the one that didn't practice cannibalism eat up all the kit placenta...

1. Rabbit is very potent in treating Stroke. A 1-year old Buck, Okro and knife are the 3 main things that are used without any Juju for treating Stroke for 7days. A man in Offa community rears it mainly for this purpose.
2. Good Luck Charm- Some Herbalists also buy rabbits on a regular basis purposely for good luck charm. Rabbit is a special creature. Its usage depends on the level of research.
3. Rabbit Meat is medicinal in nature. It is a white meat with a very low fat and cholesterol compared to chicken and other meat. Medical Doctors recommend it for diabetic patients, patients with high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.
4. Rabbit Meat is also used as manpower. It is a proven fact that rabbit meat has a component that boosts libido in men. This is one of the reasons that corporate people who sit down for long patronise rabbit meat to boost libido. You can't be eating rabbit meat and be weak on bed.
5. Rabbit Feaces and some other things are used to formulate Layer Feeds to boost egg production. With rabbit feaces, there is nothing like old layer (spent layer) because if you use it for old layers, they will lay more at commercial level like a young layer or even better. Eimeria species fall under protozoa this are organism that do infect rabbits, especially young and recently weaned rabbits. Which bring about the coccidiosis...

� Treatment of breeding doe before mating as it's confirmed that pregnant doe can transfer this disease to it kits.
� Adding tridax and bitter leaves to the rabbit weekly ration twice in a week is very effective in preventing coccidiosis
� Avoid overcrowding of the kits and stress.

�Good feeder.. That allow easy cleaning without remnant that can serve as building room for the oocytes

*Random mating* this is the simplest type of mating where all males in the farm have equal chance of mating with any doe in that particular farm.
In *random mating* breed, genetic make up, blood line, trait does not influence mating like other breeding systems..

*Out-crossing* this is the method whereby rabbit farmer introduced new individual preferably buck of different genetic backgrounds into his/her farm. It is one way of creating a new genetic variation

*Previous lectures* we discussed about crossbreeding... Most rabbit farmer find it difficult to distinguish between *out-crossing* and *crossbreeding*

Crossbreeding which is the mating of two different breeds ẹ.g *Dutch* and *hyla* but in order to *out-crossing* , the rabbit have to be of the same breed ẹ.g hyla from different bloodlines. The prime objective is to breed two rabbit of the same breed that are completely unrelated genetically. Therefore, the two mating (the buck and the doe must come from separate bloodlines. (that is why most farmer prefer to buy buck and doe from different farm or bloodline
*outcrossing* is practiced. With the introduction of new blood in a line, result from an *out-cross* tend to exhibit more hybrid vigor ( heterosis).

*Advantages of out-crossing.*
�Reduce inbreeding depression outcrossing is very significant in reduction of inbreeding depression. This is the loss of hybrid vigor within the bloodline following repeated inbreeding.
�Another prominent reasons for an outcross is to introduce new characteristics or traits into your bloodline that your rabbit is missing.

*Line breeding.* Is the mating of offspring that are related with only one parent either related by the buck or doe
*Line breeding* It involves breeding together more distant relatives, such as cousins.
*Linebreeding* is a special form of inbreeding utilized for the purpose of maintaining a high genetic relationship with a desirable traits..

*Experimenting line breeding with typical example ,* if a father Rabbits breeds several of his daughters
and some of the the daughter give bath to offspring with impaired vision or offspring with bad trait e.g long teeth , these animals will be eliminated .discontinuing this gene.
The Offspring from the father that do not have this impaired vision will pass on the GOOD genetics of the father Rabbits . If the father had never been bred to his daughters, this bad gene may have gone undetected for several
generations but since it was concentrated the bad gene show face and was eliminated

*PUREBREEDING* ....
More emphasis will be on pure breeding .. Because that is where interest of most farmer is.. And it seems to be the best of all breeding system... Before we can talk on *purebreeding* let look into below terms for better understanding..
1 pedigree 2 purebred 3 registered

*A pedigree* is a record of a rabbit's ancestry. Official pedigrees list the rabbit's parents,
grandparents, and great-grandparents from
both sides.(doe and buck)

*A purebred rabbit* is one with a pedigree as
described above, but with all the rabbit's
ancestors being the same breed. For example now to call rabbit a pure breed. I.e *newzealandwhite*. It means that five generations before that certain NZW.. Are cross of nzw only, it means the parent, grandparents, great grandparents must be a NZW

*A registered rabbit* is one that has been entered into a credited breed database such as the American Rabbit Breeders Association, The British Rabbit Council, or any of the specific breed groups like the Havana Rabbit Breeder's Association, by a member of that association who must evaluate the rabbit to align with its breed standard. These rabbits are both purebred and have pedigrees, though their pedigrees must contain the rabbits' names and or identifiable numbers, weights, colors patterns (i.e. "broken black"
Many famers don't know what purebred
means.. Some farmers think purebred means when the kits came from parents of the same breed..
My bunnies were born by a dutch Mum, and their Dad is also a dutch.. exactly the same breed.. The question is... Is that enough to justify a purebred?.. *NO* .. Before you can justify a purebreed you must be able answer the Below questions. Are the grandparents
Dutch ? Are the great grandparents Dutch? Did the rabbit have pedigree of dutch?
if the parents both have a pedigree then you can refer to it as *pure breed*

*Pure breeding* is synonymous to "breed true" or "True breeding" its a process by which a breed of rabbit will breed true-to-type when mated like-to-
like;(same breed) that is, that the progeny of any two individuals (buck and doe ) in the same breed will show
consistent, replicable and predictable characteristics. A Kitt from two purebred
of the same breed, for example, will exhibit the traits of its parents, and not the traits of all
breeds in the subject breed's ancestry..... In a layman way.. It's means if you cross hyla buck with hyla doe it must give you exactly hyla Kitts.... It's so disheartening after raising rabbit farm only to reach market and discover that your breed are not pure breed.. Pure breeding is essential where buying will never compromise the quality of breed requires. Just as Bella feed will not compromise *hyla breed* or *NZW* that are of no quality compared to the standard quality of above breed.....
To avoid all this heartbreaking moments and story that touch... It's always important to get your parent stock or breeding doe from certified and trusted farmers who won't compromise *purebreed* with mixed breed.

*Pure breeding* is so much important because
� It kits expected are 90% predictable.
�It is done to maintain certain desirable traits from going to extinction such as fast growth in *hyla* ... And good fur from *Angora*
� It guarantees uniformity in growth, size, weight, color,

�Their is always readily available market to *pure breed* compare to *mixed breed*.

*Breeding* is the method of bringing together buck and doe of a desired trait for producing offspring or young rabbit of good and desirable traits or character

*Rabbit breeding* . Is the selective mating so as to obtain offspring with desirable value,improve performance and high economic production, such as fast growth, resistance to disease, fecundity (prolific), fur etc

I will be breaking down each breeding system for better understanding..
Ranging from Inbreeding, crossbreeding, outcrosing, linebreeding, purebreeding,random breeding..
*. Inbreeding* is the mating of individuals that are more closely related through common ancestry such as rabbit from the same mother and father to mate together.
Breeding of closely related individuals

*Mating systems that promote inbreeding*
*Full Sib mating* : mating of individuals which have both parents in common

*Half Sib mating* : Mating of individuals with one parent in common
*Backcrossing* : mating of the progeny of a cross between two parents to one of the parents
*Small populations* : even with controlled crosses, some inbreeding will still occur.

*Consequences of inbreeding*

�Genetic uniformity due to homozygousity
Unmasking of recessive trait

�Inbreeding depression i.e. Loss of vigour

*Characteristics of inbreeding depression*
Increase in number of nonviable or barely viable individuals

Drastic decline in fertility

Decline in vigour. For example lost of desirable traits.

High mortality in weaners
Reduction in growth rate

*Cross breed* : it is a term meant to facilitate mating between separate breeds of rabbit to achieve offspring or Kitt with average value or Trait of the buck and doe...
Crossbreeding : this is the process of mating two or more genetically unrelated rabbit i.e two different breed Dutch and NZW. The aim of crossbreeding is to combine trait and characters, so as to create greater variability in resulting offspring.... *California* is a crossbreed of *nzw* and *chinchilla* and *Himalayan*

crossbreeding: is often done with the
intention to create offspring that share the traits of both parent lineages, or producing a mixed breed with mixed breed vigor .

crossbreeding can also produce breed of inferior quality or dilute a purebred gene pool to the point of extinction
Cross-breeding for multiple
generations is not advantageous as it
results in
� unpredictable offspring.
�If you are breeding animals on purpose,
then you have an idea of the traits that you would like them to have,
*cross-breeding* removes your ability to
predict the outcome of the mating..
Crossbreeding lead to loss of pure line or certain trait.

Despite the negative part of cross-breeding. Let look in to positive side of it...

For the purpose of this lecture I will the advantages into two point..

Cross-breeding can combine the traits/
genetics of diverse breed . Yes,
you are unpredictable in the first
generations (minimum of 5–10
usually) such as *California*
This doesn’t always work out like you
had planned, and it takes many
generations after the cross-breeding
before you know if you nailed it
�. Production of a specific hybrid
that has desirable traits from
heterozygous genetics.
This is what we do with Hyla breed crossing it other breed with small growth rate but have other good trait such as prolific, resistance to disease
producing this cross for many
generations, then you can have a
highly predictable breed.. Which will be bigger than pure Dutch and more resistant to disease than pure hyla
