Travel / A Visit To Asagba, Asaba, Delta Nigeria by maryamuwane: 11:57pm On Nov 22, 2019
I've traveled to places in books and real life , so I've experienced different cultures, many I've received with shock.
I recently visited the palace of Asagba of Asaba. Within the short time I spent in the palace, I learnt a lot about their culture. Though on my entry into the town, I saw many women riding bikes and scooters, I was not too surprised because it's a thing where I come from too but it says a thing about their culture. While in the palace, I met the chiefs, they were all old and educated which shows how important they consider education, I said this also because there were very few hawkers in the streets.
They believe the throne is never empty even in the king's absence so the throne is addressed like the king is present. It was funny at first
I understand they take their culture very seriously and the old are regarded with much importance, they are given the honor of breaking the kolanuts and praying in their language.
The culture shock I experienced was when one of the chiefs took the kolanut and served everyone, it felt really awkward, I mean there were younger people present but the old man went round serving everyone.
Then we were told about their relationship with Jesus, their ancestors knew when he was being crucified. According to the story, the night turned into day, and day into night. The gods told them an innocent man was being crucified after consultation (the man's description was made to fit Jesus), so they were to perform atonement.
Interesting, isn't it?

Career / Many Cvs Are Thrashed Before They Are Seen By Human Eyes, Here's How To Avoid It by maryamuwane: 8:41am On Nov 12, 2019
How can you make your CV stand out?

Due to the increasing number of applicants employers receive for each job, it has become pertinent for them to use applicant tracking systems (ATS) that scan resumes to make the selection process easier. ATS only recognize certain keywords entered by the hiring manager, they pre-filter and score for relevance, and send only the most qualified ones for human review.
Research has also shown that recruiters spend only 6 seconds looking at a resume, so if your resume does not have these keywords and if it does not convince a recruiter in 4 seconds, it is very likely to be thrown out. ATS are also used to organize and contact job candidates in some cases, it is mainly used to simplify the hiring process for companies.

You need to make your CV stand out so the recruiter will find it attractive and you might end up being called for the job interview.

How do you know the right keywords and format to use? Shortemps has compiled a list for you.

Update your CV according to the job description – As said earlier, ATS search for some particular keywords which mostly were used in the job description; they could be based on skills, experiences, location, former employers or work experience. Read the job description carefully, take note of the keywords mentioned and use them, nail the correct keywords so your CV will be recognized. You can make use of services like TagCrowd to know what keywords to focus on using the job description.

Think of ATS as a search engine – Think of the system as a search engine like Google, how do you insert keywords into the search engine to give you results? For instance, you want to find out what the Berlin conference was about, you search for ‘Berlin 1884’ or ‘Berlin and the colonial masters’, these are keywords and some ATS might be set to recognize the ‘and’ conjunction. It could work out if you indicated Berlin as your skill and 1884 as your years of experience.

Mention keywords more than once – Some ATS rank candidates if a keyword that is being sought for is mentioned more than once...

Literature / No Safe Haven - A Story By Mariam Bint Haruna About Sudan Massacre by maryamuwane: 1:17pm On Jun 20, 2019
Everything is happening so quickly, it's too much to comprehend.
I'd gone to school as usual, but Ummu came to get me, we hurried home and I saw many other parents rushing to do the same...
Less than 2 months ago we were happy our president of 30 years was removed from power and everyone was happy, I heard it was the beginning of a great change, I didn't understand but I celebrated with them. We were made to listen to the news more closely and it was less movies for I and my brother.

The happiness was short-lived, few weeks later Abu had been warning us to run home from school if we sense any danger, Ummu was stocking the house with foodstuffs and some other household goods.
... We got home to meet the house empty, Ummu was trying to call Abu but internet was down, Kabir is nowhere to be found. There was chaos everywhere, our gates were locked, curtains were drawn and Ummu keeps shushing me.
Abu rushed in carrying someone, it was Kabir. A bullet had grazed his cheek and he was bleeding profusely. 'the hospitals are closed, internet is down, the soldiers are alkilab'. He cursed angrily. 'This is man's inhumanity to man, all for power', 'we have been in shackles for decades and they are not ready to set us free', he bowed his head.

It's 5 days now, our stocked food are fast running out and I am tired of staying indoors in the dark. There had been banging on our gates, people had tried to break into our house but Allah has been faithful. Abu sneaked out earlier to find out the situation of things, but he ran back in with horror in his eyes. I walked quietly to where he and my mom were talking, my little figure could not be seen in the dark. They were talking about my best friend Asma, I tried to listen harder. Abu spoke in hush tones 'Asma had sneaked from her parents outside to get her doll, but was unlucky to be seen by a brigade and 10 of them took turns on her, raping her till she died'. My voice rang out before I could stop myself, screaming. Abu rushed to my side to cover my mouth, Ummu was crying quietly.

I don't understand, Asma was the sweetest girl in class, she could never hurt a fly. What did she do? Why was my brother shot at? Who are those trying to bring down our gates? Why are we prisoners in our home and on our lands?

Literature / The Vitiligo Man - Story By Mariam Bint Haruna by maryamuwane: 12:57pm On Jun 20, 2019
OJO MONDAY EKO ONI GBA GBA KUGBA OH

Fela's song screamed from the radio as I hurried my way to my interview. I hated Mondays in Lagos due to its rowdiness, I still do because it's not better, except during festive periods anyway.

I was praying I get a bus easily because I would not want to be late. I got to the bus stop and was surprised to see people were very slow in entering a bus, I wondered what was happening but I didn't stop to think, I rushed into the bus but stopped in shock.

There was a man at the far end, he had vitiligo, the condition was very obvious and all over his skin. I went in and sat beside him, that was when the others rushed. Then I thought, I don't know about this condition, what if it's contagious and I was sitting right beside him, I just couldn't bear the stigmatization.

We exchanged money in the process of paying for the fare and I was really nervous, I was surprised seeing lots of cash with him, I don't know why I imagined he'd be poor.
There and then, I chatted a friend about the condition and he told me it was not contagious, would have browsed online but the name was not occurring to me then. So, I relaxed until we got to the bus stop.

I kept thinking about the man on my way and I couldn't help but pity him.
Anyway, I got to my interview quite early but I met a very large number of people outside the building. I approached them hoping they were not there for the interview but alas they were, some had been there since 6am. I couldn't imagine how they would interview everyone that day, so I decided to leave, a girl told me to hold on and see what will happen when the interview starts.

So I stood really close to the door, it was opened few minutes later and the 10 people close to the door were asked to file in, the attendance written was not used. I was overjoyed and I hurried inside.

I was the third to be interviewed, It was a panel interview made up of a woman and two men. I was shocked when I saw the 'vitiligo man' from the bus, I was a bit destabilized but they made me comfortable and the interview went smoothly. At the end of the session, the 'vitiligo man' whose name I found out was Mr Atikah narrated his experience with me on his way there that morning and I could feel my face flush. I felt really good about myself while I left, glad I was able to be of help to someone.

Literature / I See You - Mariam Bint Haruna (A Story About A Victim Of Internet Scam. by maryamuwane: 12:38pm On Jun 20, 2019
I was skimming through my mailbox, when I saw the message, the title read YOU HAVE BEEN GOTTEN. Gotten bawo, I clicked it open and started reading. It says that I was recorded while I was nude, the upper part of my body was gotten with my face showing clearly. I was given a week to send 1 BTC (bitcoin) else my video will be published on my social media with my friends and family tagged.

Scam, the first time I experienced that word was in 2013. I'd gone to Osogbo to see my grandma and I received a text from 'MH Bank', the text read that I had issues with my account and I had to click a link and fill my bank details to resolve it so my money won't go missing. I was disoriented and very distracted that day; first I had just gotten to Osogbo from Lagos and trying to locate my house, secondly, I actually complained about my bank's frivolous charges two days before. Minutes later I received an alert, N60,000 had been withdrawn from my account. I nearly fainted, I still don't know how I managed to get to my grandma's that day.

Since then, I have been extra careful, taking precautions in any kind of transaction and more online. But this, how's it possible? I continued reading...
Wondering how we go you? Hahaha
Your Webcam was recording you without your knowledge. Doubting? Click this link to see your beautiful body...
My hands were sweaty and shaking already, I clicked, Lo and behold, I saw myself in all nudity. I was in my room, I guess I was working on my system and it was connected to the internet. But I was astounded still, how did this happen? I remember my Webcam opened by itself up to five times and I kept on exiting sometime ago. It should be on one of those days.

I don't doubt that he has my social media accounts, I mean he could record me from my room, he can do anything. I was freaked out, a bitcoin is equivalent to $5,000 or more and there is no way I can afford that. Who do I talk to? Where do I go? Time is fast going and I had less than a week since I didn't send the money on time. I couldn't sleep or eat, my mom kept asking if I was OK, I snapped and nearly cried. Everyone left me alone.

I prayed and prayed about it, asked God for forgiveness if this is the punishment for my sins or for him to punish me any other way. My worry affected my health, I was using the toilet frequently and I developed temperature. I was literally dying. No one could help and I didn't want to see anyone.

I knew he'll continue blackmailing me if I yield, so I decided he could do whatever he want, this too shall pass. My Friend, Grace hadn't seen or heard from me in three days, my brother whom she inquired from about me told her I've been sick. She came visiting and I opened up to her. She said she has read about similar issues online, it's called different names; Webcam scam, sextortions, porn blackmail...its done by hackers to observe people in their privacy and to blackmail them. Some even end up turning their victims to their slaves.

She told me to tell him to go ahead, she advised I change my facebook privacy settings so no-one can post to my wall or tag me without my consent, and I should report the video on YouTube consistently. We both started reporting the video and I replied him saying I don't have any money to give to him. YouTube eventually brought down the video and gratefully, it didn't have up to 5views yet.
We waited for few days and he didn't respond to them mail. I was more than relieved and I covered my Webcam with a duct tape. No more 'webscams'.

Health / I Can't Find My Period by maryamuwane: 10:11pm On Mar 20, 2019
I CAN'T FIND MY PERIOD

I was scared to death, very worried about my period that has refused to show up. I am 100% sure I am not pregnant, I do not know what the cause is, but I think it's that stupid Tunde that used my pant for ritual. I slept off at his place one night, I could not believe I was so naive.
I can't even tell my mom, the whole family will know I have been doing 'it' and the worse thing is that white garment church my mom attends will flog the evil spirit out of me.
I finally told Kunle, that guy likes me ehn. I just act like my head have 'touched' most times. He said its called 'amenorrhoea', ame what. Won de book worm, I rolled my eyes.
"Yes, amenorrhoea, you said its almost 3 months " - Kunle asked
I nodded
"You should go to the hospital, they'll run tests and tell you what the issue is" - Kunle
I thought about how those nurses might recognize me, or even think I'm pregnant when I say what I came for. I felt I had no other choice, so I summoned courage and went to the hospital, I was directed to the gynaecologist. He was wearing glasses so he must sabi work.
He was asking me questions, when last I saw it, if it has ever happened. I remember it happened once when I fell ill in senior secondary school. He continued probbing, I told him I have been having headaches and I am having one right now.
He asked if I am hairy, I said very well. I have beard and I also have hair on my tummy.
"The hair on your tummy is suppose to go down as a female, is yours like that? " I wasn't sure
He drew how the hair on male and female tummy looks. Turns out I have the one for male.
He kept on writing in my file, I think I heard somewhere that if the doctor's note is too long, it means your case is serious. I was nearly holding my head, ha Bose Aye e re
He said I should enter a room, he called a female doc in who asked me to take off my pant. I did, that's how she called the male doc to come in and I shouted. She asked if I don't want him to examine me, examine bawo
I said no o.
He said he'll write it down, I did not answer.
I was later taken to another expert after some tests who told me about polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), how it's common among my generation and so on. In my head, I was thinking why me. It means I have more male hormones than female. It sounded unbelievable, I mean, I have male hormones and I'm this fine.
The new expert explained that there was no need for vagina examination since I'd already told the doc that I didn't insert anything.
She said they will give me drugs and other lifestyle tips to improve my menstrual cycle.
I stepped out a bit relieved, so Tunde did not use me for yahoo, I always knew he was a good guy.

Literature / Lost - Story By Maryamuwane On Female Circumcision #endfgm by maryamuwane: 3:15pm On Feb 06, 2019
It was in the morning, it had not dawn yet but the ship was set to leave. I have to leave with Michael, he promised he will be here. Hauwa! Someone called out in the dark, are you running away? My eyes shot out in the dark. Someone recognizes me, my heart beats faster than normal, I must return home immediately.
I bumped into someone, raised my head and saw Michael staring into my face. "Hauwa", he started, "sorry I'm late, we can go... ". I ran past him home, rushed into the room and locked the door.
My elder sis, Hassanat placed her hand on my shoulders, stared into my face, "it's not that bad dear, you'll survive, we all have". My father barged into the room with my mother and his other wives in tow, he pulled me up, I've never seen him that angry, "you tried to run away?" I said he's hurting me, my mom started pleading. "You will have to go through it today!"
I fell to the floor.
My name is Hauwa, where I come from, genital mutilation is part of our culture. They do it for various reasons, but none favors the woman. It encourages sexual purity, allows your husband to enjoy sex with you and keep you modest they say. But the screams I hear when it's been carried out, the dirty tools used by dirty hands that does it makes me rather want to end my life than go through it.
I am 17 years of age, my mom and I have been avoiding every means of having it done to me. My sisters have gone through it, so mine should not be different. Huseinat can hardly pass out urine and Hassanat has been a shadow of herself since theirs was done 5 years ago. Michael offered me the path to freedom but alas I missed it.
By noon the 'specialist' was around, I am to be circumcised. I was held down while they do it, it was unbearably painful, I passed out.
I couldn't move around for weeks, my mom took care of me. My dad hadn't forgiven me for trying to run away, he said I should get ready for my wedding. He will marry me off before I disgrace the family further.
I cried endlessly...
Alhaji Bamako is a chief in my town, he is very influential with a large family. One evening, after a small ceremony on my mother's insistence, I was taken to his house.
The night of my wedding was suppose to be enjoyable, but he couldn't go through. He tried and tried, I begged him to take me to the hospital, so the process of deinfibulation can be carried out on me.
Of course, Alhaji was embarrassed, he has many wives and has never had the need to do that. But he is also very understanding, he took me to the hospital the next day, pleaded with the doctor to be discreet about it.
We went home and I discovered the process did not make it any less painful.
Three months later, my stomach was bulging, everyone was excited. I tried to be happy but my heart yearns for Michael and my long lost freedom. The only way out of this for me is death but the look on the faces of my mom and sisters kept me alive for them.
On the day of the child delivery, Alhaji was beside himself with happiness, 10 of the best midwives were present to help. It was taking longer than normal, each of the midwives proffered solutions to make it successful. I was in labour for almost two days, I can feel the life in me draining away. Out came the baby, but I didn't hear shouts of joy from the women, only silence and shock on their faces.
I raised my head to see his hair dark like mine, but the skin has the color of Michael, that was all I saw before leaving the earth.
