Mr_Anony: I've been following this thread and apart from Calloti's trolling, I find it interesting for the most part. The above quote is the part that interests me the most. I believe God is Love and that is what Christianity is all about. This is why I say it is not a religion. The problem is a lot of people who do not understand Christianity attack a stereotype of it. I don't see how a person of reason can reject Christianity in fact rationality does lead men to Christ. However, I have come to understand that it is not logic and reason that stands in the way of accepting Christ, it is pride. A man's ego is what stands in his way.

Religion / Atheist Summer Camp Is Heaven On Earth For Nonbelievers by mkmyers45(m): 5:45pm On Aug 24, 2012 |
Most summer camps host kayaking, arts and crafts classes and campfires, but what makes Camp Quest Northwest different is that it is literally "beyond belief." Located just north of Seattle, Camp Quest Northwest is a summer camp for atheists or children of atheists, self-described "freethinkers" or people not otherwise traditionally religious. "We would encourage them to read, to go to church," said Chuck Wolber, one of Camp Quest Northwest's founders. "The best way to become an atheist is to study the Bible, and I definitely recommend the kids do that."
The secular sleepaway camp rents the area from a Christian camp, so camp officials cover any signs saying "Lord" or "God" with masking tape, and replace those words with fantasy-like words, such as "Flying Spaghetti Monster," which they use to emphasize the imaginary nature of God. The camp hosts different sessions, such as the Socrates Cafe, where campers are free to discuss anything on their minds, from the age-old question of "where do we come from?" to how to handle bullies who pick on them because of their agnostic beliefs. "It's amazing. I love it here," said a 9-year-old camper named Elle. "With certain people, you have to limit yourself or feel socially obligated. This feels nice to be here and not have to limit yourself and know you won't be bullied or hurt." Camper Chandler Garry is like most 11-year-old boys, except he calls himself an atheist. He said he doesn't have an answer for why he doesn't believe in God, other than he hasn't seen proof that God exists. "All of my friends are Christian," he said. "Sometimes I do get bullied because of that, because I'm an atheist." Chandler said he has occasionally been curious about other religions, but he insisted that he came to his conclusion about God on his own, separate and apart from his parents, Matt and Karen Garry. Matt was raised Jewish and Karen was raised Christian, but now both identify as atheists and decided early on to raise their kids in a God-less household. "We wanted to raise our kids to make their own decisions," Karen Garry said. "If our children decided they wanted to be Jewish, fine, not a problem. We would love them just as much as if they were atheist or whatever, Buddhist. We just wanted them to be good, happy people." "It was always very important to me to teach them about the scientific method; if something is provable, you have a hypothesis and you theorize, find a solution for it," Matt Garry said. "It boils down to when someone is sick or very sick or hurt, we don't pray to God, we pray to doctors and to the science that is going to fix them." At Camp Quest, religion, in some form, is often a topic of discussion, but here they believe more in talking about evolution and logic. They think critically and question everything, and they don't believe in God. Several of the campers said they had been exposed to religion through family, and some said their parents had been raised in religious households, and then chose to become atheists. "Some of my family is Catholic so I've gone to a wedding and a funeral," said a 13-year-old camper named Bailey. "I understand how they might want to believe in something like that, but I don't really understand it." Other campers believe people use God as a catch-all explanation for life's events, but they still have questions. "They don't really know, when they think about when [and] how they were here," Elle said. "They have to find something to explain why was the first human here on Earth, and their answer, their go-to is God, he made them." Despite her young age, Elle arguably knows as much about the Bible as many of her peers but said God is something she would have to see to believe. "Personally, I don't believe in him, but if he were to come down and do something really amazing, I would be able to accept that he exists," she said. The majority of Americans still identify themselves as Christian, but a survey from the 2008 U.S. Census reveals that more than 34 million Americans consider themselves agnostic, atheist or to have no religion. That number has more than doubled since 1990. The first Camp Quest started in 1996 in Kentucky with 20 campers. Camp Quest Northwest, which opened this summer, is the 15th Camp Quest location and this year, camp enrollment exceeded 620 campers, more than twice the number of campers than two years ago. But Lisa Miller, a clinical psychologist whose research focuses on the spiritual awareness of children, said these Camp Quest campers, some of whom are as young as 8 years old, are too young to attend such a camp. In her experience, Miller said children who have belief and religion at home are healthier and that religion can be incredibly valuable. However, several campers described Camp Quest as a support group of sorts and that this was a place where they are free to be themselves. "I don't have any atheist friends or anything," Chandler Garry said. "So I would like to maybe make a couple of friends that live near me that I could actually go to their house and have dinner, not have to pray before eating. ? I can actually be the same as them and not have their parents hate me or whatever because I'm an atheist." http://news.yahoo.com/atheist-summer-camp-heaven-earth-nonbelievers-190240069--abc-news-topstories.html |

what is the essence of serving a dead god? Why should anyone be proud of the dead. I want to believe this gods once existed, but they are no more. They must have fallen to something superior, so why disturb their sleep.
Traditional worshippers should never be proud of anything. They should rather hide in shame. How can they (gods) have a large followership at one time only to lose them to something they can't explain. Their time is over, moreover, i don't see the greeks still calling on zeus, zed etc.
Why? They are dead !! Look Mr man-made gods including christian folklores are as powerful as the amount of followers they have...People believe in Ifa-Orisha and it is fully working for them...Although some gods are generally presumed dormant/dead because of lack of followership it is impossible to label them dead. Look i know traditionalists who are proud, happy, live life well and don't care about anything because they believe in what they serve and it works for them....All religions undergo some sort of evolution and i tell you that even the abrahamic faiths will be left behind if they fail to evolve... |

plaetton: That is a logical part of showing contrition. Do you feel sorry for committing selfish deeds even though they may not affect others negatively? An example to go with the above question is not giving money to a beggar. A beggar comes to you asking for some money and you just lie and tell them that you don't have any money on you or some other excuse. Maybe that's not the best example but it's close to what I mean. |

Like I said before, atheist do not live on a deserted island by themselves. An atheist cannot fashion his own set of laws or moral codes within his society. So whatever is considered good or bad in a society also applies to atheists. Most of society's laws and norms are not religious based. It is an error to assume so. The only thing that an atheist divorces himself from are religious dogmas. What about restitution? |

Religion / Re: How Does An Atheist Repent? by mkmyers45(m): 2:36pm On Aug 24, 2012 |
plaetton:
Firstly, atheists aspire to higher levels of ethics and morality, independent of any divine prerogatives. That is very different from saying that we possess it. It would be arrogance for any atheists to claim so.
Secondly,Sin is a religious term. Good and bad are universally defined in todays global village. Like someone posted yesterday, only evil people would need a wrathful deity in order to discern good and bad. We think that humans have matured and transcended that level. You know that something 'bad' cannot be universally defined as truly bad as it may pass for acceptable elsewhere? Discerning good and bad to you as an atheist was achieved by what means? |

from what you have shown him it shows that to some atheism is just a convenient way of living the life that suit them/convenient to them so as not to have to answer to anyone. Eg, a deity. He was trying to make a point about asking forgiveness....anyway taking up your point i can say that its possible many make the choice of theism/atheism because they feel they should or should not answer to someone. |
Religion / Re: How Does An Atheist Repent? by mkmyers45(m): 1:47pm On Aug 24, 2012 |
plaetton:
Athieism is not philosophical proposition. Atheists are not a homogeneous group that share certain certain creeds or code of conduct. No. aside from not believing in supernatural deities, an atheist is just like any other human being, having the normal idiosyncraciess that come with being human.
Atheists have never claimed to be possessors of superior moral codes. Being a prisoner of no religious creed, an atheist is more likely to take responsibility for his actions. An atheist, just like everyone else , may never be able to rise above the moral and ethical thresholds of his environment. For example, a corrupt nation will most likely have corrupt christians, muslims and atheists.
Therefore, an atheist is also subject to the same feelings of guilt, remorse, contrition, pretence, hypocrisy and rationalisation when confronting his own sins and weaknesses.
The only difference between an atheist and a theist in this case is that the atheist does not blame the devil for his weaknesses and does not Award himself a get-out-of-jail card in the form of prayer and forgiveness. @First-Bolded: Many will strongly disagree with you as many atheist try to ascribe higher levels of morality to atheists... @Second-Bolded: How do you confront your own sins? How do you even define what is sin to yourself? |

souldust: i am asking because with the crusade launched against the Gods by the christians, the ATR has become synonymous with demon worship. But as time went by and with education, some people are beginning to separate christian propaganda from the reality about the ATR. My question is; will this new knowledge, after being spread among majority of the people, change people's attitude toward the ATR and the ancestral Gods and therefore see a revival of the traditional religion. *Sigh* It is indeed very sad how ATR have been reduced to almost nothing as we africans under pressure of the gun abandoned 'Eledumare,Chukwu and Ubangiji' for the 'god' of foreigners... ATR is just as mystical as all other religions and i think ATR may never be like before when it held much sway but indeed many are beginning to see truth's for themselves as the days pass by that truly Traditional Religions are not in any way bad devils with horns...Also we also have to factor in hypocrisy as many who call 'Lord Lord' also keep african protection by the side..There is an evolution of african religions especially ifa orisha but the glory days are far gone |
