How Rapists Should Be Treated – Founder Of Nigerian Child Foundation, Yemisi Wada, Blows Hot

Mrs Yemisi Wada, a lawyer, the founder of Haven for the Nigerian Child Foundation, a Non-governmental Organization that works to keep children off the streets.

She is one of the women crying for justice for all raped girls and believes that rapists should be treated like murderers.

In this interview, Mrs Wada suggested stringent measures against rapists to serve as deterrent to others. Excerpts:

What punishment do you suggest should be meted out to rapists?

Rapists should be treated like murderers, and that is what I believe. Whereas the men who rape get over whatever they do within a few minutes, it is a life time sentence for their victims. It is an experience victims never forget as they forge ahead in their future life.

The punishment thus must be so high for those caught to serve as a deterrent from further harm. I think a life sentence in jail or even castration in the case of those sick ones that rape children.

Since their weapon is on them unlike those who kill and maim with guns, where these can be taken away from them, these ones should have their weapons of severe destruction, both physical and mental, also taken away from them.

Where is the safe place for women? Where are the women getting it wrong in case we do not know?

To ask where the women are getting it all wrong is again to make them or victims suffer a second time. If a woman is raped or abused in any way it has nothing to do with her as a victim, but with the man.

It is a man who is underachieved in one way or the other looking for some feeling of power and picking on someone physically weaker to prey on. Raping, sexual or physical abuse of women takes place in all societies, but it is how it is handled, how the perpetrators are punished that decides how easy it becomes to commit rape or to abuse women rampantly

With the increased number of cases recently, it becomes so confusing and one asks what should women do to avoid being raped?

I doubt any woman or child ever wants to get raped so the question should not be if there is anything to do to avoid being raped.

It is our men and boys that need to be dealt with severely if they ever rape a woman; hence they will seriously think about their actions before taking undue advantage of another poor victim.

When a person is abused, physically or sexually, it is not the punches or the act that is painful per say. It is the feeling and the little voice in ones head that says it is because you are a lesser being that you’re being abused.

It is a feeling of shame that is not rational, but it’s there. It is this shame deep inside that makes victims allow societal stigma to affect them. It is that shame that makes many victims of abuse keep quiet about it.

It is so sad because that shameful feeling is what people need to address enough so victims know it has absolutely nothing to do with them, but everything wrong with the abuser.

Societal stigma will always be there, but if more people would rise up with the help of the government and civil societies; if more rapists and abusers are dealt with, the stigma would lessen.

Some people finger careless dressing as a reason for rape, throw light on this?

Careless dressing has never and can never be a reason for rape. There is rape because some people do not have self control.

I love very nice things. I see a mansion in Banana Island, would I be able to move in and live large with my family because I like it?

The only reason I cannot is because there are laws against such things. Rapists rape women in Hijabs, little girls in rags and even babies in diapers.

How sexually inviting is that? As a founder of an NGO, we work with street children who are the biggest threat zones. They are vulnerable and that vulnerability is what abusers prey on the most. It is all about having power over another. Many of them are victims of one form of abuse or another.

Many have ran away from home and when they get to the city they often look for shelter amongst people who are in conflict with the law as they feel they have done something wrong by running away from home. They are then sexually abused, pimped, both boys and girls, used as child labour.

Where then is a safe place for the women?

A safe place for women is a society where there is justice and sincerity of governance. A safe place again is where citizens know their government and law enforcement care about them.

There’s the Child’s Right Act which protects the basic rights of children and there are like 17 states mostly the Northern states that have refused to adopt this Act into practice. In Nigeria right now the age of consent for sex is 11 years old in the year 2020!! Is this not barbaric?

This is to allow men to marry babies all in the guise of Islamic rites. That Bill says no one under the age of 13 can give legal consent and 16 is the age one can marry, but with parental consent.

What do you think about Nigerians handling the COVID-19?

I am not happy the way Nigerians are handling COVID-19, just like other Nigerian factors. When there is the level of corruption that exists like ours everything breaks down.

When the government lies to its citizens all the time and do not provide all that are expected and supposed to, so why would they be trusted? A large majority of our population are illiterates who cannot read and have no access to information elsewhere.

When the government says there is pandemic, and its citizens see only figures and not the victims; the government is not trusted nor believed. Corruption is the reason the economy is poor, there are no social security funds to allay the poverty of many and one thinks it will be okay to impose a stay home lock down?

The palliatives that were promised did not get to many quarters. Initially, states like Kano lacked testing kits, some states’ isolation centres were empty, but with funds allocated to them.

Ibrahim Magu a Nigerian police officer who was appointed Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,has reacted to the arrest of Instagram celebrity, Ramon Igbalode is popularly known as Hushpuppi.

Hushpuppi was on Wednesday June 10 arrested in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) alongside his colleagues by International Police (INTERPOL) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for alleged fraud.

In an interview with TVC, Magu said the commission is not involved in Hushpuppi’s arrest.

“We are yet to be involved in the case of Hushpuppi, but if they happen to give us this thing (details) we would assist.” Magu said

The antigraft agency boss in the interview denied the allegation that the agency is mostly interested in the arrest and prosecution of internet fraudsters. He said the Commission also rehabilitates the suspects arrested for internet fraud.

Governor Gboyega Oyetola Describes June 12th As A Tribute To Courage

Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State, has described the declaration and recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day as a tribute to courage.

Oyetola also attributed the day as a symbol of Nigerians’ collective resolve because differences and sentiments are set aside and people speak as one in achieving a collective vision even in the face of the stiffest opposition.

The governor made this known in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Ismail Omipidan on Thursday. 

Oyetola congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari for actualising what he termed “long yearnings of the people,” adding that June 12 is a reminder that Nigerians have what it takes to defend their democracy.

He said, “the acknowledgement of June 12 as Democracy Day is a tribute to courage. I, therefore, extend deep gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for actualising the long yearnings of the people for the recognition of the day they freely gave their mandate to a candidate of their choice, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, in an election regarded worldwide as the freest election in Nigeria.

“June 12 is symbolic of our collective resolve to set aside our differences and sentiments and speak as one people to achieve our collective vision even in the face of the stiffest of oppositions. It is a reminder that we have all it takes to defend our democracy.”

Describing post-June 12 1993 as Nigeria’s longest democratic experience, Oyetola noted that the mere fact that it has endured for over two decades and still counting is an indication that Nigerians are “on the path of interminable democracy, enduring good governance and sustainable development.”

Relaying the Osun democratic experience in the last 21 years, Governor Oyetola said the State has adopted democratic tenets in all it does, as the government is carrying the people along in formulating policies and ensuring that the dividends of democracy are distributed equitably in all the sectors across the State of Osun.

He paid glowing tributes to the State’s legislature and the judiciary for extending their hands of fellowship and cooperation to the executive without comprising their independence and integrity.

Governor Benedict Bengioushuye Ayade of Cross River State  has announced June 16 for the resumption of public schools in phases.

The date, approved by Governor Ben Ayade, was made known by the Commissioner for Education, Mr. Godwin Amanke, in an interview with The Nation and in a statement by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mr. Christian Ita.

Amanke explained that on the said date, three public schools – one each in the three senatorial districts across the state – will reopen and after two days, an increased number will be approved for resumption. Others will resume in phases till the end of the month. 

“We are starting with public schools and subsequently, private schools will equally be made to resume,” Amanke said.

He explained that the state government was coming out with a COVID-19 protocols for resumption of schools which shall cover provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), produced by the State Garment Factory, to be distributed for free to school pupils and their teachers.

He added that the state has about 23,000 pupils in primary schools and over 75,000 in secondary schools – all of who will be provided with the PPE currently being mass-produced in the factory.

The Rivers State Police had asked residents to ignore the 8 pm to 6 am COVID-19 containment curfew imposed by Governor Nyesom Wike and instead honour the 10 pm to 4 am protocol stipulated by Federal Government.

Governor Babagana Zulum Governor of Borno State has ordered the reopening of three secondary schools in Bama Local Government,after Three Months schools were shut nationwide to prevent coronavirus spread. 

The reopening of the schools was announced in a statement by the state government on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

Zulum, who is a Professor of Irrigation Engineering said the decision was made to enable students to continue their education.

He said, “I will soon come back to Bama, I will personally supervise the enrollment of students. We have to reopen Government Day Secondary School, the mega school will also be converted to a Secondary School, while a girls’ Secondary School will be cited in Shettimari Primary School temporarily.”

The Senate May on Thursday, consider and pass the revised 2020 budget, The Nation learnt on Wednesday.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, gave this indication at plenary in Abuja on Wednesday, after the Senate Committee on Appropriations laid the report on the budget.

“Tomorrow, we can receive and consider the report to ensure that we don’t delay anything as important as that. So, this is the essence of altering the order paper,” Lawan said.

Nigerian model Benjamin Ese has accused musician, Dbanj of allegedly raping his friend two years ago.

He made the disclosure after the singer joined the campaign against sexual violence and demanded justice for rape victims in a post on his Instagram page.

The Koko Master post read: “#NoMeansNo, we need to raise our sons in the right way and teach them to love and respect women.

Responding to his post, one Otunba Benjamin, known as @action_ben, took to his Instagram page, alleging that Dbanj has no right to speak against rape, claiming that he raped his friend.

He claimed that Dbanj had some time raped his friend after he offered her N200,000 in exchange for sex, and she refused.

According to him, the incident happened in a hotel in Victoria Island.

He alleged that Dbanj collected the spare key of the girl’s hotel room from the receptionist and allegedly raped her afterwards.

Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek was a Nigerian singer-songwriter and guitarist.

Vanguard News reported that the legendary singer died after battling with cancer for almost a year.

The news of his death was announced by a talent manager, Joy Tongo and was confirmed by Majek Fashek‘s manager, Uzoma Omenka.

His manager revealed he died at 11.45 pm yesterday, June 1, 2020, Nigerian time.

He also noted the singer died in New York, not in London where he was previously receiving treatment.

According to Uzoma the doctors advised he should be moved close to his family, which is the main reason he was relocated to New York where his wife and three sons live.

He also said Majek was separated from his family for 10 years until last year September when they were reunited on the advice of his doctors that he should be close to his family.
