Family / NB Weekly 12 - How My Favourite Uncle Turned Me Into His Servant by nb360: 5:01pm On Apr 22, 2017
Uncle Ade visits Ibadan every Christmas holiday. He never stays beyond 1 week, but his visits are the highlight of the holiday. He’s everyone’s best uncle. He brings Kilishi, chocolates and the latest gadgets. He gives the best gifts and is known for giving gifts for things other adults do not consider gift-worthy. My parents believe the best gift they can give to any child is a carload of advice. ‘’Kunle be a good boy o, if you get any girl pregnant you must marry her, get a first class like your elder brother...’’

For my matriculation, Uncle Ade sent me a mini laptop. When I graduated, he sent me N40,000 and an offer to do my youth service in Abuja. I was thrilled. Imagine going to live with the very Uncle Ade. When NYSC Call-up letters were released, I was posted to Sokoto. It was a really sad day. I had picked Abuja as my first choice when registering online. Sokoto wasn’t even one of my options. In camp, I applied for relocation and it worked out. Thank Goodness! I was finally going to live with Uncle Ade.

Politics / NB Weekly 12 - Show Me The Money: The Nigerian Whistle-blowers' Dilemma by nb360: 1:50pm On Apr 22, 2017
To blow or not to blow the whistle; that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to think about the greater good to Nigeria or to focus solely on the rewards of pointing the EFCC or other agencies in the right direction.

If the only motivation is the later, then it is important to understand a bit more about the whistle-blower's policy.

Whistle blowing is being touted as the new way to make easy money in Nigeria. This latest anti-corruption tool, only recently launched by the Nigerian government, is presently considered the latest get rich scheme in town. Unlike other get-rich schemes, whistle blowing is a noble venture, as it entails helping Nigeria tackle its crippling corruption problem.

Religion / Broken Halo: The Fall Of Nigerian Pastors - NB Weekly 11 by nb360: 11:06am On Apr 15, 2017
Psalm 105:15 - '’Touch not my anointed, do my prophet no harm’' is now the most popular Bible verse in Nigeria as Men of God struggle to hide the many failings of their human flesh.

Previously, these canal failings of the Men of God would have slipped by unchallenged, but Nigerians have become more ‘awake’ as they grapple with the current economic and societal difficulties facing the country. Today, questions are being asked about the relationship between a pastor's lifestyle, church funds and other church assets [e.g.: universities, private jets]. Life's difficulties have created a congregation of doubting Thomas; Psalms 105:15 is fast losing its potency. The doubt is not in their faith in God, but in the 'anointed' modern day prophets and the church structure.

Career / How Linda Ikeji 'destroyed' My Career - NB Weekly 11 by nb360: 10:56am On Apr 15, 2017
I had a job; one of those jobs where the dress requirement never matches the salary, thank God for night market! My job was good for a beginner; it held great prospects for the career I wanted, but it never got me the recognition I deserved. To get noticed in my field, I would have to grind hard for at least 15 years, the pay at the top wasn’t even fantastic. My entire pension would not be enough for a Birkin bag. Someone was making more from shouting “koko master’’ in a philistinic video. Another was making more by simply copying and pasting people’s story; does she have 2 heads?

If Linda Ikeji can do it, I can do it better. If Linda can make money, I can make more money! I am smarter, finer and have more connections than all the servers in my bank branch put together. I am also a champion on Nairaland.’’

Health / [read] Depression: The Silence Killing Nigerians by nb360: 3:12pm On Apr 09, 2017
Nigeria is a country that is growing and evolving at a rapid pace. For those who live and work throughout Nigeria, the change sweeping the country is both good and bad.

In terms of good, it can be seen in the perceived increased opportunities for students and professionals as well as, a growing marketplace that allows entrepreneurs to sell their goods in order to grow the new economy. On the flip side, the bad comes into play when people try to figure out how they fit into the new Nigeria and try to cope with the difficulties that arise with changes in their way of life; especially if it is unwanted.

The recent and unfortunate suicide of Dr Orji, who jumped off the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos, was greeted with shock by many Nigerians. Here was a man who seemed to have it all, the right job, a car and other trappings which no doubt made him the envy of many. Since Dr Orji's suicide, numerous other cases of successful and attempted suicides across Nigeria have come to light: business women, students, showbiz personalities, professional men and women. All living in the silent hell unable to tell the world about their pain and helplessness.

Politics / NB Weekly 9 - Nigeria's Political House Of Cards by nb360: 4:53pm On Apr 02, 2017
Every time you vote for a Nigerian politician, you know you are taking a gamble. The fine words, the empty promises, the nice clothes and bleached smiles, the shared dance and camera induced enjoyment of street food, are all part of the stage, and a stepping stone for power.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen the full stack of cards from Nigerian politicians: the jokers, the kings and the queens, but very few aces. Disappointed supporters from all sides have been left wondering if they should hold, fold or walk away. One thing is certain, the future progress of Nigerians is not a part of this poker game.

Crime / Listen Nigeria, Rape Is No Joke! by nb360: 2:08pm On Mar 29, 2017
The Dangerous Misconceptions About Rape

Recently, Nigerian female comedian Etinosa made comments about rape that shocked and appalled many people. The comedian indicated that women who are experiencing rape should accept the event and pretend they are having consensual intimate relations. The only thing that is more disgusting than Etinosa's original comments are the comments on social media supporting her view.

A Blatant Lack of Understanding

Etinosa's statement uncovered a blatant lack of understanding about rape among many people in the Nigerian community. Her statement insists that rape is a one-way act of love or passion that could be enjoyable for the victim if they returned the emotions. The core problem with this idea is that rape is not about affection at all. It is a disgusting crime that not only strips the victim of their dignity, but has long-term effects that can scar the victim for life.

Business / NB Weekly 7 - Francis Cole: The Confessions Of A Nigerian Shoemaker Entrepreneur by nb360: 9:16pm On Mar 19, 2017
In a developed nation such as the United States or England, entrepreneurs such as Francis Cole would have the tools they need to achieve large levels of success. Instead of emigrating to a country that offered more opportunity, Cole decided to stay in Nigeria and carve out his own success story.

"The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today." - H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

When compared to the great corporate success stories of America and Britain, Cole is just a small-time operator. Nonetheless, this entrepreneur has big ideas that he wants to turn into a reality someday to benefit his own country. His story is not typical for the Nigeria that people knew many years ago, but it is fast becoming the model of perseverance that is the hallmark of the newer generations.

Health / NB Weekly 7 - Cancer: Why Nigeria Should Act Now! by nb360: 6:44pm On Mar 19, 2017
For many years, the primary medical concerns for Nigerian and Africans, at large, consisted of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. As these diseases dominated the world's attention, another collection of fatal conditions was rapidly becoming more prevalent than any of these diseases. Cancer has now become a huge problem on the continent, with nearly 50 percent of all cancer deaths occurring in developed nations.

In 2015, nearly 600,000 people died from some form of cancer in Africa. A World Health Organization, WHO 2015 statistic shows that about 10,000 cancer deaths are recorded annually in Nigeria while 250,000 new cases are recorded yearly. Nigeria’s cancer death ratio of 4 in 5 affected persons is one of the worst in the world.

NYSC / NB Weekly 5: NYSC: Death Sentence After Graduation - Nigerian Bulletin by nb360: 12:38pm On Mar 04, 2017
Kemi Busari has written an interesting piece in this week's Nigerian Bulletin Weekly (NB Weekly 5). See below:

The National Youth Service Corps was birthed in 1973 during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon. The scheme was conceived as a strategy to encourage cultural integration in the aftermath of the civil war.

But the mandatory one-year scheme, where youths are deployed to various parts of the country, has been a subject of rife criticism recently. These criticisms range from poor health management of corps members to inadequate welfare, and recently, the death cases in orientation camps. Several calls have been made for a review or total eradication of the scheme.

Business / The Nigerian Naira 'macabre Dance' Explained - Nigerian Bulletin by nb360: 11:30pm On Feb 26, 2017
Nigerian naira which performed as the worst currency in 2016, surprised many spectators as its traded among the most performing currency last week owing to Central Bank of Nigeria intervention.

The currency last Monday slumped to worst in history to 520 per dollar at the parallel market to gain over 13 per cent and closed at 460 before weekend.

The sharp rise, analysts said it was due to the massive pump of foreign exchange by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

In this piece by Anayo Nwosu, a Banker, titled: "THE APPRECIATING NAIRA AGAINST THE DOLLAR -What My Friends In Business Should Know", he explained the basics of what is happening in the country's forex market and how to Naira keep yielding to the tune of 'Macabre Dance'.

Business / NB Weekly 4 - Naira: How Nigeria's Currency Became Worth Less by nb360: 2:59pm On Feb 26, 2017
The Nigerian Naira has been a major headache for its citizens, investors and businesses owners as the currency fell short of the largest economies in Africa. In 2016 alone, the currency was ranked among the worst performing currencies in the world, but this was thanks to the federal government and the monetary authority’s slow approaches in attending to market play.

How It All Started – Flexible Forex Policy

Almost a year after President Muhammadu Buhari took over the government in 2015, the monetary authority hearkens to the cries of investors, analysts, economists, and countrymen by allowing the Naira to float freely at the official market rate on June 15, 2016.

After policy, the currency moved swiftly from 199 at the official rate and 215 at the parallel markets to 300 and over 400 to a dollar at the official and market segments respectively.

Foreign Affairs / NB Weekly 3: Donald Trump: The Emperor's New Clothes - 18-02-2017 by nb360: 8:37pm On Feb 18, 2017
Christian Andersen’s famed tale, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” published more than a thousand years ago is evergreen. It paints a picture which illustrates how the human mind can be manipulated into thinking and believing in fallacies, a quality which makes the story a classic.

This tale tells of a very powerful Emperor who struts about in what he called his new clothes but was actually naked. One astonishing thing is that the Emperor was so feared that anyone who pointed out the obvious was labeled stupid and incompetent by his sycophants. So everybody kept mum and admired the Emperor’s new clothes.

Social media has many purposes and it offers a great deal of value to people all over the world. The problem some people run into with social media is that they are unable to understand the real purpose of individual platforms. Not every platform is designed to be a sounding board for your Valentine's Day frustrations or success stories, and nowhere is that more evident than LinkedIn.

The people who are successful on LinkedIn have one simple rule; keep your personal life off the LinkedIn platform. That is especially true when dealing with issues that are pertinent to Valentine's Day. LinkedIn is not the place to condemn the one who broke your heart or share the gritty details of your romantic conquests. In order to understand the purpose of LinkedIn, it helps to understand why it is not the place to discuss the details of your love life.

Health / Why A Sexual Health Screen Is The Best Valentine Gift Ever - Nigerian Bulletin by nb360: 10:51am On Feb 14, 2017
There are plenty of people who would argue that a sexual health screen for people in a relationship might be the worst gift to give for Valentine's Day. But when you really think about it, knowing the health status of yourself and your partner makes it easier to plan a future, and become even closer as a couple.

The Meaning of Valentine's Day For Couples

The simple meaning of Valentine's Day is to celebrate the love between two people. Whether it is a love that has burned bright for years or a love that is just being revealed, it is a day to celebrate love. Valentine's Day is also the perfect day to confirm the fidelity you and your partner share, or to put suspicions to rest.

Those that have been affected would absolutely agree that a sexual health screen on Valentine's Day is the perfect time to confirm true love, or find out that it is time to move on. A sexual health screen reveals infidelities, or it can confirm monogamy. Determining the health of your relationship, regardless of what that health may be, can be a blessing on Valentine's Day.

With the epic failures of Android lines such as the Galaxy, it seemed like the path was clear for the iPhone to re-establish its dominance over the smartphone industry. But when Google announced it was releasing its Pixel smartphone, consumers decided to wait and see what Google had to offer.

It turns out that Google updated the Android operating system and added features that are similar to the iPhone, which is something customers have wanted. But Google did more than just add features to compete with the iPhone, Google took everything that was good about the Android and made it better. Now it looks like Apple may, once again, have competition in the smartphone industry that is too much to handle.

Apple's Iron Fist

The iPhone has great features like allowing families to share applications and offering a high quality camera in a phone format. But Apple has, from day one of the iPhone, had an iron fist about allowing users to do whatever they want with their phones. Apple constantly forces users to use its iCloud service for storing photos and videos, and it is impossible to do anything on the iPhone without first getting Apple's approval by entering your password.

Android users who switched to iPhones found the constant need to enter their password annoying, and they were also turned off by the inability to personalize an iPhone without paying a lot of money. Almost every iPhone app costs something, and the selection of apps for the iPhone is small compared to the Android system.

The Versatility of the Pixel

Google has put family app sharing on the Pixel, but it still needs work. The Galaxy line was plagued with technical issues that eventually saw the popularity of the line disappear. Google has repaired those errors, and added more versatility to the Android OS.

The Pixel allows you to store your data on any cloud platform you want, and the Pixel also has several more options for allowing users to customize their phones. Even something as simple as changing a ringtone on the iPhone requires a four-step operation. It is much simpler to make changes on the Pixel than it could ever be on the iPhone.

With the iPhone, you cannot add any app that is not sold on the Apple app store. With the Pixel, you can download and use any app you want from any source. The Pixel, as with other Android devices, does not require a password to execute every function, and the Pixel has dramatically streamlined the OS upgrade process.

The iPhone Killer?

The Pixel is a quality smartphone that offers versatility and freedom to the user. The iPhone still maintains tight control over what a user can download, how the user's phone looks and how the user's phone operates. After just one day with the Pixel, any iPhone user will realize just how little freedom they have when they use an iPhone.

Is the Pixel the iPhone killer? The tech media is already heralding the arrival of the Pixel as the next step in smartphone technology. Apple's desire to maximize profits on its iPhones has created a situation where users are forced to choose from a limited amount of options, and the iPhone forces users to stay solely within the Apple universe. The versatility and user friendly nature of the Pixel are definitely going to give the iPhone a run for its money.

Business / 5 Legal Ways To Make Money On Valentine's Day - Nigerian Bulletin by nb360: 3:04pm On Feb 12, 2017
This article appears in the latest version of the Nigerian Bulletin weekly (NBWeekly)

Valentine's Day is nice for couples, but it can be tough for single people who have to watch all of the snuggling going on around them. Instead of being bitter because you are single on Valentine's Day, you should take advantage of the situation and make some extra money. There are plenty of great and legal ways that you can turn your spare time on Valentine's Day into cash in your pocket.

Flower Delivery Service
All of the flower shops in your area already have delivery services, but that leaves out the poor guys who cannot make it to the store in time to get flowers to their true love. You can start a one-day delivery service that will run to a local store that sells flowers, buy as many flowers as your clients need, and then deliver those flowers to their associated beloveds.

Singing Telegrams
This is a gift that women will love because they can file it under "it's the thought that counts." It doesn't matter if you can sing, the effort just needs to be there. Rent a tux and include a heart-shaped box of chocolates for each client and you are all set to croon for someone else's significant other.

Take Valentine's Pictures
This one could be a hard sell to suspicious couples, but you can make a lot of money with this if you create an honest sounding pitch. All you do is go around and offer to take pictures of happy couples on Valentine's Day on your smartphone's camera. Then you give each couple a card with a website on it where they can go and buy the pictures. There are plenty of websites that offer simple picture selling services, and you could make a lot of money taking pictures on Valentine's Day.

Sex Supplies Delivery
This one is so crazy that it just might work. In the weeks leading up to Valentine's Day, give your phone number out to guys who will be going out on first dates with someone they really care about on Valentine's Day. Your service is to be on-call all Valentine's Day to deliver sex supplies such as condoms and lubricant to any discreet location where your customers want to meet. If a Valentine's Day first date is going well, then you could be the one who saves the day for a young couple.

Commiserate for Profit
Just because you are single does not mean that you have to be alone on Valentine's Day. You can arrange a single's event in your area, charge admission and commiserate with other single people for a profit. Get together with the owner of your favorite club and discuss bringing in bands, vendors and other people who will make your event the place to be for singles on Valentine's Day.

Single people often despise Valentine's Day, but that is only because they don't see the tremendous financial opportunity in front of them. There are plenty of ways for single people to turn Valentine's Day into a financial bonanza and forget all about how truly lonely they are deep down inside.
