Police Are Arresting People Wearing A Fashion Brand Inscribed "police" T-shirt by gidson12(m): 2:16am On Apr 05, 2010
it just happened on friday evening in front of my house a team of policemen on patrol just stopped right in front of me and apprehended me asking me if i was a police officer i told them no, that if it's because of the t-shirt that i'm putting on that its just the brand name of the fashion design, before i could finish they said that they are arresting and charging me under impersonation, i further tried explaining to them that the T-shirt has no police Logo on it neither was "Nigerian police force" specifically written on it that its just "police" which is the brand name that is inscibed on it, they gave me no ears rather they grabbed me by my waist belt and threw me into their patrol vehicle and on to the police station, before i could knew it i was already in the detention cell with and among hardened criminals, they refused me contact to my lawyer i had to sleep a night on the cell before my neighbor came to bail me the next day being saturday with the sum of N5000 and they seized my t-shirt, what i passed through inside the cell is another story entirely ,

this is just trampling on peoples right for putting on a t-shirt which has got a brand name "police" on it, so for those of you who love that nice and fitting t-shirt that comes in different nice colors with the police inscripion on it beware unless u might be one of the victims of these unjust police

its illegal to impersonate a military officer in nigeria and the police in nigeria is a branch of the military.
that's always been the rule.

Na wa for Naija Police o! Police products are designers. we have police watches, police glasses etc. The T shirts are just ordinarily T-shirts and dont look in anyway like police uniform. I wonder why they just want to extort people.

that was not impersonation, the brand name of the fashion t-shirt is police, it was not a police uniform, it was just a T-shirt,

My brother thank God for your life, a friend was once branded an armed robber because he put on military jack boots,

You can write the IG and give full description of the events with names and all, this will save others from falling victim

Lawless Nigeria with even more lawless goats in the Nigerian Police Force.

This is clearly the result of the very high level of illiteracy among those NPF folks. Beyond their greed and "oga settle us" talk, many of them are plain old cave men in uniform.

The nigerian police force is a joke. they are probably hungry.

Stupid nigerian police. Is dat nigeria's present problem? Armed robbers and ritualists are extorting and killing people by d day. Instead of d police to go afta such criminals, they r busy arresting people wit tshirts dat dey themselves r too poor to buy. Mtsheww!

Gidson12, the details of your experience were frightening to read, but sadly are not surprising to learn about, given the climate of semi-anarchy that prevails on the streets of Nigeria, one of the most crime-infested countries in Africa.

Anyone who has lived in Europe or North America will have grown used to the sight of civilians dressed in assorted items of military camouflage uniform, either when going hunting, for those living in the countryside, or as a fashion statement, among city dwellers.   Similarly, Tshirts worn in the West freely bear slogans ranging from the obscene to the political, so an inscription bearing the word "Police" would raise few eyebrows.  That freedom of expression and clothing choice does not and can not translate into the Nigerian context, where armed robberies by "Men in Military Uniform" are frequent enough to be called an epidemic.

In short, Lesson 1 from Survival 101 on Nigeria's mean streets dictates that civilians  REMOVE any inscription or article of attire from their person that could REMOTELY be interpreted as having military or law enforcement significance.

Nigerian policemen do assault women for kicks, but they have also been known to murder civilians, in order to rob them of cash and valuables.  Could you please explain what will have been achieved by making yourself a guinea pig in an academic experiment to determine the level of provocation required before Nigerian policemen proceed to violate your own civil rights ?   Remember that one needs to be alive in order to file lawsuits.

There aren't laws against accidental discharge in Nigeria yet!

A word they say is enough for the unwise!

buh if there happened to be any encounter turned manhandling and you happen to come out of it alive, that might just mean a whopping 100 million naira from law suits depending on how good your lawyer is, but again, this is only in 1 in a million daily cases- - - and there aren't up to a million daily cases in the country, do the maths!

So in other words, my life might be in danger for walking past a Police Post wearing a Police t-shirt?  undecided

Nigerian Policemen do not require any level of provocation to violate civil rights. Being in Nigeria is reason enough.

Even tho, it wld hv bn nice to, you really don't think I intend to make myself a guinea pig, do you?

A friend of my was telling me after my incident that a guy was arrested in anambra state for putting on the T-shirt and the police framed him up for armed robery and kidnapping, the guy spent up to 2months in police detention b4 his case was disolved with some huge amount of money, that not to talk of the torture the guy passed through pressuring him to admit that he's a kidnapper and armed robber, mehn i fear where we are heading 2 with the kind of people that are being recruited into the nigerian police force

@Ikengawo

The law says there cant be a state badge or anything that resembles it on the clothes!!! It is apparent the nigerian police who are almost illiterate don't even know what the law says. Police departments in advanced countries make money from memorabilia > shit, I have an NYPD mug on my table right now.

It should not be a problem wearing a tshirt that just says 'police'; what is illegal is to use it to misrepresent yourself as a policeman when you are not!!
Re: Police Are Arresting People Wearing A Fashion Brand Inscribed "police" T-shirt by Ikengawo: 7:21am On Apr 06, 2010
no, my uncle worked as a police man, the law says you cannot wear anything that suggests you're military and the police in nigeria is a branch of the military.

these ppl were impersonating officers and got arrested for violating the law. period.
i dont think nigerians understand democracy.

Ikengawo,

It's obvious you have never seen nor heard of Police t-shirts, Sun glasses, Wrist watches etc.

Please do us all and yourself a big favour by going to www.google.com , type in 'Police t-shirts' , click on search and quit making yourself look and sound silly lipsrsealed
