Omooba77:
Arsenal will Monaco meet in the for a place in the Quarter Final of UEFA champions league

Last-16 rivals Arsenal FC and AS Monaco FC have not met before in European competition but for Arsène Wenger the French side need no introduction at all.
Wenger was Monaco coach for seven years (1987–94) before leaving for Nagoya Grampus in Japan. This will be Wenger's first official encounter with his old club, who are competing in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds for the first time in a decade.

• Monaco reached the round of 16 as winners of Group C – although their 11-point total was actually two fewer than Arsenal managed in finishing Group D runners-up behind Borussia Dortmund.

Previous meetings
• Although this is the sides' first competitive encounter, they did meet in north London in a pre-season friendly on 3 August. Monaco won 1-0 through a Radamel Falcao goal.

• The starting lineups were:
Arsenal: Szczęsny, Debuchy, Chambers, Koscielny, Monreal, Ramsey, Arteta, Wilshere, Sánchez, Giroud, Cazorla.
Monaco: Subašić, Dirar, Raggi, Carvalho, Elderson, Moutinho, Bakayoko, Kondogbia, Ferreira Carrasco, Falcao, Ocampos.

Match background

Arsenal
• This is Arsenal's 15th consecutive appearance in the last 16. However, Wenger's men lost at this stage in each of the last four seasons.

• Arsenal's last victory in the round of 16 was against FC Porto (6-2 aggregate) in 2009/10, since when they have suffered elimination against FC Barcelona (2010/11), AC Milan (2011/12) and FC Bayern München (2012/13 and 2013/14).

• Including their play-off tie against Beşiktaş, Arsenal have earned three wins and one draw at home in this season's competition.

• Arsenal's home record against French teams is W5 D3 L2.

• Their most recent meetings with Ligue 1 opposition came against Olympique de Marseille in last term's group stage, when they won 2-1 (a) and 2-0 (h).

• Wenger has never lost a match back in France with Arsenal. His overall record against clubs from his home country with the Gunners is W10 D4 L2.

• Arsenal's record in two-legged ties with French teams is W4 L0.

Monaco
• Monaco are eyeing their first UEFA Champions League quarter-final since 2003/04 – the season they went all the way to the final.

• Their most recent round of 16 appearance ended in a 3-0 aggregate defeat by PSV Eindhoven in 2004/05.

• Monaco took four points on their travels in the group stage, winning 1-0 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on matchday five.

• Leonardo Jardim's side had the best defence in the group stage, conceding just one goal in six games.

• Monaco have only lost once in five previous visits to England – a 2-0 reverse at Liverpool FC in the 2004/05 group stage. In their only past trip to London they drew 2-2 at Chelsea FC to book their place in the 2004 final.

Coach and player links
• As Monaco coach, Wenger won the French league title in 1988 and the French Cup in 1991. He also led the principality club to the 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup final, losing 2-0 against SV Werder Bremen.

• En route to that Cup Winners' Cup final, Wenger's Monaco beat Swansea City AFC 8-0 at home in the first round – still their record European victory.

• Leonardo Jardim faced Arsenal as Olympiacos FC coach in the 20012/13 group stage, losing 3-1 in London but winning 2-1 at home.

• Dimitar Berbatov played against Arsenal in seven north London derbies for Tottenham Hotspur FC (2006–08), scoring once and winning just once – a 5-1 home triumph in the 2007/08 English League Cup semi-finals.

• A team-mate of Danny Welbeck at Old Trafford, Berbatov appeared as a substitute in the Manchester United FC side that beat Arsenal in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League semi-finals. His only away goals at Arsenal were two for Fulham FC in a 3-3 draw in 2012/13.

• Ricardo Carvalho did not lose any of eight games played for Chelsea FC against Arsenal between 2004 and 2010 – including the 2007 English League Cup final (2-1).

• David Ospina played in seven editions of the Derby de la Côte d'Azur for OGC Nice against Monaco – winning two and losing three – between 2008 and 2014.

• Mathieu Debuchy played for LOSC Lille from 2003–13, winning six of ten meetings with Monaco.

• None of Mikel Arteta (Paris Saint-Germain), Olivier Giroud (Montpellier Hérault SC) and Laurent Koscielny (FC Lorient) managed to beat Monaco in Ligue 1.

• Abou Diaby and Yaya Sanogo (both AJ Auxerre) and Mathieu Flamini (Marseille) never faced Monaco in French football.

• Mesut Özil played against João Moutinho in Germany's 4-0 defeat of Portugal at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

• Moutinho lost his four previous European matches against Premier League sides – home and away defeats by Manchester City FC with Porto (2011/12 UEFA Europa League) and by Manchester United with Sporting Clube de Portugal (2007/08 UEFA Champions League).

• Jérémy Toulalan lost to United in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League round of 16 with Olympique Lyonnais. He later helped Lyon win 2-1 at Liverpool in the 2009/10 group stage.

• Arsenal's record scorer, Thierry Henry, played for Monaco between 1994 and 1999, joining the London side later that year after a short spell at Juventus.

Arsenal will try to redeem its image after loosing 1-2to Tottenham against Leicester on Tuesday night in the continuation of EPL.

TEAM NEWS

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez is available after recovering from a hamstring problem.Jack Wilshere remains out despite returning to training after an ankle injury, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is two weeks away from a comeback.Leicester defender Robert Huth has completed a two-game ban and could make his debut.Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and striker Chris Wood remain out with respective foot and ankle problems.

MATCH PREVIEW

There's an old journalism training mantra which came to mind on Sunday night - it says that there's no value in being first with a story if the story is wrong.

Lawro's prediction

"Whatever has happened at Leicester, it has completely undermined their manager Nigel Pearson. The Foxes insist they have not sacked him, but you are almost waiting for the inevitable now. His future does not look too good."Predictions: Lawro v Arsenal Ladies star Kelly SmithAccording to social media that evening, Nigel Pearson had been sacked by Leicester. He hadn't; sometimes truth and twitter are very distant cousins indeed. That's not to say that Pearson couldn't do with the lift that an unexpected three points on their first-ever trip to the Emirates would give them.Leicester are bottom and have been bottom at the end of each of the last 12 rounds of Premier League fixtures from which they've taken only seven points.Back in August when Arsenal drew at the King Power Stadium, Foxes' optimism was high.Leonardo Ulloa seemed to have settled immediately to the demands of being a top-flight striker, Riyad Mahrez and Jeffrey Schlupp were offering real threat on the flanks, and there was a momentum about them which carried them to seventh place by the time they beat Manchester United in September.Play mediaNigel Pearson: Pundits on 'bizarre' clash with James McArthurPearson's strange altercation with James McArthur on Saturday has only focused the spotlight more sharply on him and his club.Arsene Wenger will be determined to show no mercy to Leicester - the defeat at Spurs must have been stingingly painful to take, and brought a run of five consecutive victories to a juddering halt.Suddenly team selection and transfer policy are back on the lips of Gunners' fans who long for a return to the standards of the good old days when Leicester provided the final opposition for Arsenal's Invincibles in 2003-04.From where they are now, Arsenal need a decent unbeaten run just to get into the top four.If I had to get off the fence, I'd say they'll manage that again, but it's going to be close.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-headLeicester are winless in 16 games against Arsenal (D6, L10) since beating them in their first Premier League meeting at Filbert Street in November 1994.The Foxes have lost their last seven league games away to the Gunners.Arsene Wenger has never lost a Premier League game against Leicester, but he was in charge when the Gunners were beaten in an FA Cup fourth round penalty shoot-out in 2000.Arsenal's last home match against Leicester was their 38th and final game of the 2003-04 league season. A 2-1 win ensured the Gunners' "Invincibles" ended the campaign unbeaten.ArsenalThe Gunners have won their last five Premier League home games (seven in all competitions). The last time they won six successive top-flight matches at the Emirates was between September and December 2013.Defeat at Spurs ended a run of three straight league wins.Arsenal have scored a league-high 26 goals at home this season. They are unbeaten against opposition from the bottom half of the table this season (W8, D3).Leicester CityThe Foxes have lost eight of their last 10 away league games (W1, D1).Their tally of four clean sheets this season is the lowest in the division, along with QPR.Only Aston Villa have scored fewer than Leicester's 21 goals and failed to score more often than the 11 matches by the Foxes.

The transfer deadline is coming up on Monday and Arsenal have already done business, even if the holding midfielder they signed is a 17-year-old. The emergence of Francis Coquelin has taken a little heat off Arsene Wenger in terms of that position, while the center back depth has been shored up with the signing of Gabriel Paulista. So, how are the media going to manufacture a controversy now?

John Cross, who I liked quite a bit as a journalist up until this season, wrote in an article for ESPN that we're too light up front, thanks to the loan departures of Yaya Sanogo, Lukas Podolski, and Joel Campbell even though all three were loaned out as they are excess to current requirements. Arsenal still have an attacking force that consists of Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky... nine players who can play in the forward four positions in a 4-2-3-1. Oh, and Chuba Akpom. And Jack Wilshere when he's healthy again. And Serge Gnabry. So that's 12 forwards and attacking midfielders.

Funny thing is, John Cross isn't wrong in his statements about Arsenal up front; he just doesn't correctly explain it. It's not just a shear numbers game, like the article implies. Arsenal are objectively better with Olivier Giroud up top: since returning at the end of November, Arsenal have won six, drawn one, and lost one in matches where Giroud has started. Arsenal have won 11 of their last 14 since the loss to Manchester United, the day Giroud returned from his injury.

Arsenal had Sanogo, Podolski, and Campbell while Giroud was out. Over the 15 games Giroud missed, Arsenal won six, drew five, and lost four. It's not a numbers game, it's Giroud's talents. Maybe it's time to start giving him credit instead of questioning Wenger for loaning out excess forwards.

Arsenal will look to win three straight league games for the first time this season as they face Aston Villa at the Emirates on Sunday. The last time Arsenal aimed for their third straight, they were toothless without a suspended Giroud, and fell 2-0 to Southampton. Look for the big man up top this weekend to gauge Arsenal's character for this stretch run.
