nuclearboy:

One absolutely sharp person asked (in the Bible) who would go to war or build a house without first counting the cost so that he wouldn't get to a point and be unable to continue.

Naija is tough only for those who don't have the solution in them, either due to fear or ignorance. Let me explain -- Take any business and imagine that you have a national market of 140 Million people. What proportion of that do you need to do well? When I started my ice-block biz (building machines AND ALSO selling ice a few years ago), I made up my mind to [1] produce the most efficient dependable machines around. I applied my university degree into a field populated mainly by semi-literate technicians and not only caught up with them but left them behind eons ago. They build beautiful useless furniture because people are visually affected. I build ugly machines which remind you to get to work and make money. [2] produce the hardest, coldest ice around. Same thing. All I need now is a quarter to half the time they need to get ice whose quality many find difficult to believe.

The truth is that such takes a lot: absolute dedication, bloody hard work and 100% deafness and dumbness. I remember people would laugh at this Computer Science degree holder cos he was wet, dirty and even learning (then) how to weld. No longer do they snigger. Rather, many gape when they observe whats on ground. It took 2 and a half years but lets remember William (Bill) Gates was once considered a dropout (I can't remember anyone using that as a title for him anymore). Naijas will make fun of you at the start then praise you at the end. From "Lazy idiot -is that what his mates are doing, . . . . TO I KNEW THE GUY IS BRILLIANT AND THAT HE HAD A PLAN ALL ALONG". 1 percent of 1 percent of Nigerians each giving any of us 10 Naira daily adds up to a reasonable measure of comfort which scarcely any can boast of. Plus its all on your own time! You decide when, how and where. And have a right to continue expanding till you become Dangote or go easy.

A day will come when someone (or group of such) will look at Lagos, ask the govt to allow them build a 6 lane bridge from Isolo to Lekki and erect toll gates to collect toll for 20 years. I suspect Lagos will agree. Another will Build a power station for himself then start to sell and expand till he/she generates and sells say 1, 000 MVA. Others will see and follow suit and thus will Naija develop.

Waiting for the government is a waste of time. America was built to todays standards by private enterprise. Thats why you'll find dozens of types of bread on supermart shelves - because of competition each striving for a target audience/market share. Here, its just Agege bread.

Conquer yourselves and then the environment - The same book that asked my question above also tells us we were given the right to GO, SUBDUE THE EARTH AND ETC ETC ETC,

Frustrations Of A Business Owner In Nigeria.
Nuclearboy, YES Nigeria has great potential 4 business. YES Nigeria is tough place to do business. YES You need dedication & hardwork, All these are well said , Still without the GOVERNMENT stepping in, we will not go far, IT WILL ALWAYS BE A STRUGGLE(FRUSTRATION), A couple of years ago the GOV. RECAPITALISE the BANKS & We all know what benefit that brought to our economy, that is the type of step in that we are talking about. Steps 2words the right direction to ease the frustration.

Not all of them are like that.

GBAM(got it), why don't we ask the poster what was his offence, who knows it could be that he defaulted like most lagos tenants and the poor woman just couldn't take it.

Let me quickly make my comment on this thread as it has been eluding me 4 sometime. I cannot agree more with most of my fellow nairalanders on this forum about issues they raised that really really thwarts business owners in Nigeria. We(diasporans) feel ur pain & dissapointment as we are all in this oblique boat together.
l do honestly believe that these aforesaid problems are the handiwork of the GOVERNMENT who is the creator of this burden that we all share today. Government need 2 do more to tackle these probblems & also 2 show more interest in this sector as it has great potential of turning our Economy around. These businesses we neglet 2day could be our Economy backbone(post crude era) 2morrow.
, GOD BLESS OUR GREAT COUNTRY NIGERIA,

I fully agree with you. It is a rip-off
Oga architect l do not side with u on this point at all in as much as i respect u on this blog. The 10% by 2 collected by Est. Agent is not & cannot be fruad because the money was paid to E.A for service that was rendered. l can understand that the 10% is on the high side but it is absolutely legal(atleast 4 now) in my own opinion . Ur suggestion that they should set up a commission or Ombudsman as it is called in the UK is no bad ideal, here is an additional contribution 2 that. Let an indepedent body set an Ombudsman & let all Estate Agent sign up with them if they must trade & the Government then regulates them (E.A) through the Ombudsman.
hailolive:

I think the first step towards this ugly trend is to stop the commisions here and there, the 10% times 2 been collected is a fraud/
when people buy car, does the car dealer charge them commission on the buyer? its the seller that settles the dealer.

The 10% agreement is a big scam. and why should an agent collect 10% commision?
Its not as if i am buying a commodity or they are working for me on a commision basis,

Hailolive, it might interest u to know that some buyers also pay some charges(commission) when making a car purchase especially people buying through finance. U see, it is all business as long as u can play safe within the rules.

Romance / Re: Im In A Serious Fix: Help! by onyx20: 9:24pm On Jun 14, 2009
Ipsi:

Ok, this is my fix. I met this guy sometime in February this year, I had known him for about 7 years but just as the friend of a friend because he never said more than hi anytime I saw him. So long story short we met again at the beach and he took my number. We started talking and Hanging out and became very good friends, now we are excellent together. Now the fix is this, I live with my mums best friend as a matter of convenience at the moment. the first time I brought him up with her because she is like my mum we found out that his mother had an affair with my aunts husband which resulted in their divorce and she has a child for him. My aunt only has one child for him and it took almost 10 yrs before that happened. Apparently her husband had moved out of the house though he came back later to beg and all that. point is my mum who is a single mother has already told me that she will not support our relationship, so has my aunt because they dint want to be in laws with HHS mum, but now that we really like each other I dint know what to do? help!! i need some advice? they have said that the only thing that can make it work is if there is a reconciliation.
This is not confussing at all, the advice/answers u despirately want at this ur dire time u already know my dear even B/4 u posted on this forum u said it all urself that u don't think it wise 4 u 2 pay 4 a dead man's mistake & that is very very correct. If he sincerely loves u & u think u love him enough to marry him then follow your heart there is no wrong here at all.
Properties / Re: Advanced Rents Banned In Lagos: by onyx20: 8:47pm On Jun 14, 2009
Wallex73 please u should understand that the practice worked in your America because people have a stable job & a workable system that cater 4 the working class, in Nigeria employers cannot guarantee the safety of any job with or without contract. In uk for instance, when u are made redundant & are having difficulty paying your RENT all u need do is visit the job centre & seek 4 help & u will be sorted. U can as well seek 4 help when with ur income (wages) u are struggling to survive after paying ur RENT u will as well be sorted by giving u INCOME SUPPORT until ur circumstances improve,. Now u can see a big disparity between these places. l think Fashola gov. is only trying to play politics with the people good intention though, but the timing is definately wrong. Some of this houses have got mortgages on them if the Advance Rent is not paid the landlord might not be able to keep up with the repayment especially when a tenant defaults on the per calender monthly plan & we all know what will happen to such property FORECLOSURE . And to those you Estate Agent/landlords Critics in this blogg, who still cannot understand that this is just a noise politics, ask yourself this simple question why is this same Fashola Gov. not selling or renting out to low income earners their low housing units at affordable price if they really really want change. l can see a serious Noise politics going on on this issue, Fashola have to come clean B/4 lagos Landlords will cooperate.

jagwar:

i support lol!!
i quite agree with u brethren, i'm a landlord in London renting out shared accomodation my tenants are mainly Nigerians like me but i pass through hell B/4 i get my weekly rent 4rom them even though they know i can spoil their ability to get credit in the future they just still default. Advance Rent i think should still be accomodated 4 now but with limitations. When law is passed, it need not be harsh on either side or it will not gain good credibility.

It is so sad & heartbroken to hear that War Against Corruption Mr poster, is a lost War .We cannot fight & win against an invicible enenmy can we? We have been wasting time fighting this Enemy from different fronts for almost two score years without any hope, sign or sight victory, this i believe is because we are simply fighting the WRONG ENEMY, the REAL ENEMY that poses the bigest THREAT to our very existence is OUR SYSTEM in DISGUISE. lf our leaders are really serious and honest about making us great again they should retreat from fighting corruption and concentrate instead on the SYSTEM that allows it in the first place and in time corruption will by itself be reduced to bearest minimum.

Properties / Re: Arrival Of New And Lovely Designs Of Spanish Tiles by onyx20: 8:28pm On Apr 27, 2009
l think the way Mr Ebedi was treated by Aysometin & niralanders is a bit unfair. Both parties agreed & the deal was sealed. For Aysometin not have delivered the full consignment due to lack of more fund from Mr Ebedi was already a breach of that agreement such excuse would have been sustained if Mr Ebedi's address (delivery address) was not at all ACCESSIBLE or Aysometin's men's effort was hampard by NATURAL ELEMENTS eg earthquake, severe storm, hurricane etc. Aysometin suppose to take FULL responsibility and learn from the experience. Aysometin ONLY have right to charge more money if it is CLEARLY stated in the GENERAL TERMS & CONDITION otherwise known as small prints. What we have here is a case of a BUYER having proof of PURCHASE,PAYMENT & TRANSPORTATION(take note of transportation NOT PART) and SELLER who received and issue a document against all of the above, now whether the document fail to carry the above discussed clauses or not is clearly not the buyer's fault. Aysometin should understand that EFCC only see evidence & not understanding.
