Unical Exam Day Disaster: Injuries, Lost Valuables, and Asthmatic Student's Shocking Fall - What Went Wrong? (Disturbing Videos)

Tensions ran high at the University of Calabar (Unical) on Monday, August 7th, 2023, as a scheduled General Studies (GSS) examination for students in levels 100 and 200 took an unexpected turn due to a last-minute call for a Solemn Assembly.

The incident left students in disarray, injured, and concerned about their academic pursuits. Among the casualties were three students who suffered injuries during the chaotic scene that unfolded outside the examination venue. In a remarkable display of unity, fellow students came together to aid an asthmatic student who was seen struggling for breath, showcasing the power of camaraderie in times of crisis.

The morning of August 7, 2023, started like any other examination day at the University of Calabar (Unical). Thousands of students gathered at the Academic Publishing Center beside the Unical ICT center, ready to sit for their GSS exams. The clock struck 9:00 am, and the examination process was about to begin when an unforeseen disruption occurred.

In an unprecedented move, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Mrs. Florence Obi, addressed the assembled students. She announced that they were to participate in a Solemn Assembly, a spiritual event featuring Bishop Dr. Emmah Gospel Isong as the guest speaker. The assembly was scheduled to take place at the Unical Conference Center by 10:00 am on the same day.

The abrupt change in plans left many students frustrated and bewildered. Despite their objections, the GSS exams were postponed to 12:00 noon, causing further dissatisfaction among the student body. After the Solemn Assembly, students returned to the exams venue, and those who were already called in earlier were allowed to enter and sit for the exams. It was a rough experience for them.

A sea of students descended upon the entrance of the building, creating a tumultuous atmosphere. The situation worsened as students jostled and pushed their way through, resulting in some unfortunate students falling into a large gutter near the entrance. The frantic motion of the crowd led to injuries ranging from dislocated legs to asthma attacks. Valuables such as phones, shoes, and personal items were lost in the chaos.

The entire incident was captured by students on the scene through images and videos, providing a visual testament to the chaos and disarray that marred what was intended to be a routine examination day. Students captured the disarray, showcasing the impact of the disorganized rush and its toll on their peers.

As tensions mounted and the situation spiraled out of control, university officials made the difficult decision to postpone the GSS exams until the following week, Monday. This move aimed to ensure the safety and well-being of all students while allowing time for those injured to recover and regroup. Those who were unable to sit for the exams due to the incident would have the opportunity to take the postponed exams next Monday, according to a reliable source.

The incident has sparked a flurry of discussions within the Unical community, with students expressing their concerns and grievances regarding the handling of the situation. What was supposed to be a day of academic assessment turned into a day of unforeseen disruptions and unfortunate incidents.

The aftermath of August 7, 2023, will undoubtedly prompt the University of Calabar (Unical) and other institutions to reevaluate their protocols, ensuring that academic pursuits are not overshadowed by unforeseen chaos and that students' welfare remains at the forefront of any decision-making process.

Politics / Compulsory Retirement Of Top Generals In The Military: Ensuring Smooth Order by orgria: 9:45am On Jul 01, 2023
The Compulsory Retirement of Top Generals in the Military: Ensuring Smooth Transition and Hierarchical Order

The recent directive from the Defence Headquarters ordering top military generals to retire with immediate effect has sparked discussions and debates regarding the rationale behind such a decision.

This move, in line with military tradition, mandates the retirement of senior officers upon the appointment of new service chiefs. While it may seem abrupt and even controversial to some, there are several reasons why this practice is essential in contemporary society.

First and foremost, the compulsory retirement of top generals ensures a smooth transition of leadership within the military.

When new service chiefs are appointed, it is crucial to establish a clear chain of command and prevent any potential conflicts or challenges to authority.

By retiring senior officers who would otherwise outrank the newly appointed chiefs, it eliminates the possibility of a hierarchical imbalance and creates a harmonious working environment.

Moreover, this practice upholds the principle of respect for rank and hierarchy within the military. Military organizations are built upon a strict command structure, where obedience and discipline are paramount.

Allowing senior officers to remain in active service while being junior to the newly appointed chiefs could undermine the authority and credibility of the leadership. The retirement of senior officers upholds the values of discipline and maintains the proper order of command.

Additionally, this tradition ensures that the new service chiefs have the opportunity to shape the military according to their vision and strategic objectives.

By retiring senior officers, the newly appointed chiefs can build a team of officers who align with their goals and objectives, fostering unity and cohesion within the ranks. This enables effective implementation of policies and strategies, enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the military.

Furthermore, the retirement of top generals prevents potential conflicts of interest and ensures a fresh perspective within the military leadership. It allows for the infusion of new ideas and approaches, promoting innovation and adaptability in addressing contemporary challenges.

By bringing in new leadership, the military can benefit from diverse experiences and expertise, facilitating growth and improvement in operational capabilities.

It is important to note that the compulsory retirement of top generals is deeply rooted in military traditions and has been practiced across various armed forces worldwide.

While some may view it as a sudden and disruptive measure, it serves a vital purpose in maintaining the integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness of the military institution.

As President Bola Tinubu approved the retirement of former service chiefs and appointed new ones, the directive to retire senior officers ensures a seamless transition, reinforces the chain of command, upholds the principles of hierarchy, allows for strategic alignment, and encourages fresh perspectives within the military leadership.

These measures are crucial in fostering a strong and capable defense force that can effectively safeguard the nation's security interests in contemporary society.

Furthermore, the compulsory retirement of top generals also facilitates the promotion and career advancement of junior officers within the military.

With the retirement of senior officers, vacancies open up in higher ranks, providing opportunities for deserving and capable officers to assume positions of greater responsibility. This not only encourages meritocracy but also motivates junior officers to strive for excellence and contribute to the growth and development of the military.

Another significant aspect of this practice is the maintenance of institutional memory and the preservation of organizational values and traditions.

Senior officers accumulate a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise over their years of service. By retiring them, the military ensures a transfer of knowledge to the younger generations while preserving the legacy of the institution. This continuity helps in maintaining stability and consistency in the military's operations and strategies.

Moreover, the retirement of top generals offers an opportunity for a comprehensive review of the military's structure, effectiveness, and efficiency. It allows for the assessment of senior leadership positions and the identification of potential areas for improvement.

This process contributes to the overall organizational development and ensures that the military remains adaptive and responsive to evolving threats and challenges.

While the compulsory retirement of top generals may initially disrupt the careers of those affected, it serves the greater interest of the military and the nation as a whole.

It promotes professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the armed forces, which are essential for the effective defense and security of the country.

In conclusion, the compulsory retirement of top generals in the military is a necessary practice in contemporary society. It ensures a smooth transition of leadership, upholds the principles of rank and hierarchy, enables the implementation of strategic objectives, prevents conflicts of interest, promotes career advancement, preserves institutional memory, and facilitates organizational development. By adhering to this tradition, the military can maintain its effectiveness, adaptability, and readiness to protect the nation's security interests.

Education / Medical Student At The University Of Calabar Allegedly Assaults & Bites Lecturer by orgria: 9:11am On Jun 29, 2023
Miss Umoren Nsisong, a 400-level student in the faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Calabar, has been accused of assaulting and biting her lecturer on Monday, June 26, 2023.

According to the lecturer, Mr. David Ushie, the incident occurred during his lecture when two students were causing a disturbance with their phones. After warning them, he confiscated their phones and instructed them to retrieve them from the Dean or the Vice-Chancellor the following day.

While still in the faculty building at UNICAL, Miss Umoren allegedly forcefully reached into Mr. Ushie's pocket to retrieve her seized phone. When he resisted her attempts to take the phones from his hands, she was reportedly restrained by her colleagues before finally releasing her grip on the phones.

Following this incident, Mr. Ushie secured the phones in the pigeonhole of his vehicle. However, Miss Umoren allegedly forcefully opened the door and pigeonhole, recovering her phone along with some unidentified items. Mr. Ushie attempted to prevent her from leaving with the items but was bitten by Miss Umoren, who then fled the scene, leaving other students in disbelief.

Mr. Ushie expressed concern over the incident, stating that he had never met or known Umoren Nsisong prior to that day. He emphasized that a student who resorts to assaulting or biting her teacher poses a risk in a professional healthcare environment, where patient safety is paramount.

Additionally, the news of the alleged assault and biting incident involving Miss Umoren Nsisong and her lecturer at the University of Calabar sparked a significant reaction on social media platforms.

Many social media users expressed shock and disappointment at the reported behavior of the student towards her teacher. The incident ignited discussions on the importance of respect and professionalism within educational institutions, particularly in the field of medicine where patient care and safety are critical.

Some users condemned the actions of Miss Umoren, highlighting the potential implications her behavior could have on her future career as a medical professional. They emphasized the need for disciplinary measures to be taken by the university to address the incident.

Conversely, there were a few individuals who questioned the credibility of the report and sought further evidence before passing judgment. They called for a thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

Overall, the news generated a significant amount of attention on social media platforms, with users sharing their opinions, concerns, and perspectives on the incident. The incident served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful and professional environment within educational institutions and raised broader discussions on student-teacher dynamics in academia.

Atleast 3 Medical Students missing in Marina Resort Boat Cruise Incident in Calabar.

Three of 14 medical students from different medical schools in Nigeria have drowned in waterways in Calabar, Cross River State, while having a boat cruise.

It was learnt that divers from the Nigerian Navy were able to rescue 11 of them after the boat capsized Saturday afternoon.

3 of the medical students, who are in Calabar for the Nigeria Medical Students Games, are yet-to-be found.

The students were said to have converged on Medical School Calabar for the 2023 Nigeria Medical Association Health Week.

An official of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Cross River State chapter who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
He said the three drowned students were from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and University of Uyo.

He said, “The 2023 Nigeria Medical Association Health Week and the Medical School in Calabar is hosting this year’s health week. Students across medical schools in Nigeria came to Calabar just to have their annual health week.

“As part of their social activities, the plan was to go to Marina Resort and visit the Slave History Museum. Some of the students decided to go on a boat cruise. The boat capsized when they were about to move to Tinapa.

“There were 14 persons including the driver of the boat on board. Eleven of them came out safely while three of them – two from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and one from University of Uyo – drowned.

PRESS STATEMENT FROM CROSS RIVER STATE GOVERNMENT

Cross River Governor Orders Investigation Into Cruise Boat Accident, Commends Navy, Villagers For Prompt Response

Cross River State Governor, Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu, has ordered investigation into the cruise boat mishap involving 14 medical students at the popular Marina Resort in Calabar, the state capital.

The governor, who is saddened that 3 of the medical students, who are in Calabar for the Nigeria Medical Students Games, are yet-to-be found, charged security and rescue agencies as well as local villagers involved in the operations to find the missing students and reunite them with their families.

Otu decried the safety standards at the resort, vowing that anyone found guilty to have compromised on safety would be severely sanctioned.

“The news of a cruise boat mishap at the Marina Resort, a tourist and relaxation destination in Calabar, is saddening and calls for concern not only as your governor but as a parent.

“To imagine that the boat was overcrowded and some of those on it were without life jackets is of even greater concern, and the more reason why the state government will be investigating the incident and all those found culpable of having compromised on safety standards will face the wrath of the law.

“As a government, our administration remains committed to protecting the sanctity of life and providing an enabling environment for business, tourism and peaceable living. Therefore, any untoward action that could derail our objective will not be tolerated,” the governor stated.

He further expressed his joy that all but for one of the rescued students were out of hospital and was confident that the remaining one will pull through as doctors say he is stable and responding to treatment.

Governor Otu was full of praise for personnel of the Nigerian Navy and local villagers who responded swiftly to the hapless revellers and rescued 11 of the 14 passengers on the boat

Cristiano Ronaldo is the team’s designated penalty taker whenever he is on the field.

During his nine years at Real Madrid, during which he scored many goals and won many trophies, fans began to refer to him as “Penaldo” because of his ability on penalty kicks.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner for Los Blancos took an astounding 72 penalties in La Liga alone. He converted 61 of them, making him Spain’s most successful spot-kick taker in history, per Diario AS.

Politics / I Was Deceived On Cross River Staff Strength – Gov Otu by orgria: 7:00pm On Jun 21, 2023
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has exclaimed that he was misled to believe that over 40 percent of the government work force had retired.

While receiving the organised labour in his office, the governor said he was shocked by the increase in the nominal roll after being briefed that population of civil servants had drastically reduced.

“When I assumed office, I was informed that so many persons had retired, but when I now looked at the payroll, I saw even more staff than last month. I was wondering if so many have retired as recorded, why we should now have such a humongous number in the payroll with an attendant huge wage bill?” the governor asked.

In a press release signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Ogbeche, made available to journalists Wednesday, the governor said his administration will employ the services of the Department of State Services (DSS) to audit personnel in its payroll system and produce a holistic nominal roll for both the state and local government.

He said the exercise which is to be conducted by the federal agency will help forestall all forms of irregularities noticed in the staff payroll system across board.

“We have resolved that everybody should go to the Department of State Services for verification and screening so that if your paper has some issues, from there you can go to court.

“That will be the best for us because the exercise will ensure that biometrics and other necessary screening requirements are conducted to check all forms of irregularities and abnormalities in line with relevant civil service rules and labour laws. In the end, we will know the actual staff strength of Cross River.

“Personnel audit has been a little bit of a tricky area. So, we need to put our heads together to produce a holistic payroll system, and I strongly solicit your maximum cooperation.

On the issue of employment, the governor said, “We are currently looking at the gap analysis which is why we had to suspend all forms of employment so that in the end government will only employ based on needs because with our scarce resources, we must spend judiciously.”

Earlier, the organized labour in a 21-point position paper signed by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Olayi Gregory, advised the governor to reduce the cost of governance by checking unnecessary waste.

He also requested the governor to consider promotion of teachers to Grade Level 17 as it is obtainable in the federal service to boost morale of teachers.

Politics / Biden Charged With Failing To Pay Federal Income Tax And Illegally Having A Weap by orgria: 3:41pm On Jun 20, 2023
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s son Hunter has been charged with failing to pay federal income tax and illegally possessing a weapon and has reached an agreement with the Justice Department, according to a letter filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

As part of the agreement, made public Tuesday, Hunter Biden will plead guilty to misdemeanor tax offenses and is expected to reach an agreement with prosecutors on the felony charge of illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user. It is somewhat unusual to resolve a federal criminal case at the same time the charges are filed in court, though it is not totally unheard of.

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden,

The deal ends a long-running Justice Department investigation into Biden’s second son, who has acknowledged struggling with addiction following the 2015 death of his brother Beau Biden. It also averts a trial that would have generated days or weeks or distracting headlines for a White House that has strenuously sought to keep its distance from the Justice Department.

Christopher Clark, a lawyer for the younger Biden, said in a statement that it was his understanding that the five-year investigation had now been resolved.

“I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life,” Clark said. “He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”

The news comes as congressional Republicans pursue their own investigations into nearly every facet of Hunter Biden’s business dealings, including examining foreign payments and other aspects of his finances. It also comes days after a 37-count indictment came down against former President Donald Trump for mishandling classified documents on his Florida estate, another case with even more dramatic political implications.

Joe Biden has also faced questions about his son’s business dealings and drug addiction.

The gun charge states that Hunter Biden possessed a handgun, a Colt Cobra 38 special, despite knowing he was a drug user for 11 days in October 2018. The count carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison, but the Justice Department says Hunter Biden has reached a pretrial agreement on that charge. Full details were not immediately available.

The White House had no immediate comment on the case.

Phones / Whatsapp Now Allows Users To Edit Sent Messages, But Only For 15 Minutes by orgria: 12:46pm On May 23, 2023
https://crossriverhub.ng/whatsapp-now-allows-users-to-edit-sent-messages-but-only-for-15-minutes/

WhatsApp has announced that users can now edit their sent messages through a new ‘Edit’ feature.

With the feature rolling out globally in the coming weeks, senders will be able to modify their messages within 15 minutes of hitting send. The function can be accessed by long-pressing the message and choosing "edit" in the drop-down menu. The modified message will carry the label "edited", without showing edit history.

Previously, the only way to correct a message sent in haste or containing an error was to delete it and send a fresh one, with recipients alerted to the fact by the removed post being replaced with the phrase: “This message was deleted.”

“From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats. All you need to do is long-press on a sent message and choose ‘Edit’ from the menu for up to 15 minutes after,” said WhatsApp.

Competing apps such as Telegram and Signal already allow users to edit messages, while Twitter rolled out the ability to edit tweets to select users last year. Twitter offers an editing feature to subscribers to its Twitter Blue service, giving them a 30-minute window to edit a tweet after it has been sent.

Meta’s founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, flagged the WhatsApp change on his Facebook page, showing a message that had been changed from “Beast of luck!” to “Best of luck!”

Facebook, also owned by Meta, started to roll out the ability to edit posts and comments about a decade ago. Its fellow Meta social media platform Instagram allows users to edit posts but not comments.

Crime / Boy Set Ablaze For Stealing Android Phone In Calabar (graphics Content) by orgria: 4:44am On Apr 10, 2023
A boy, 22, was on Sunday evening set ablaze by an angry mob for allegedly stealing an Android mobile phone at Atimbo area of Calabar Municipality Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State.

An eye witness who narrated the incident, said the boy identified as Eyo, has been known for petty stealing around the area and has been warned severally to desist from such.

The witness, who pleaded anonymity, said that the boy committed the offence on Saturday and disappeared into thin air only to reappear on Sunday.

“I have known Eyo since secondary school, he has always been stealing, there was a time he stole half of the class school fees.

“Even as we grew into our 20s, Eyo became audacious in stealing and more notorious, he was always caught stealing, this is not the first time a mob action was carried out on him, he only met his end today.

“They started by beating him with cutlass before setting him ablaze. Funny enough, it’s just for stealing an Android phone,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Police Command spokesperson in the State, SP Irene Ugbo, has confirmed the incident and decried the act.

While noting that it was unlawful for people to take laws into their hands, she said the rightful thing to do was to have reported the suspect to the nearest police station in the area.

“Killing him in the most gruesome manner through mob action is not only barbaric, it is illegal and unacceptable,” she stated
