Health / Re: NIMSA Opposes The Brain Drain Bill (Official Statement) by Porpulace: 12:51pm On Apr 07, 2023
DesChyko:
The Nigerian Medical Students' Association @NiMSA_Nigeria strongly opposes the recently proposed bill to mandate Nigerian-trained medical or dental practitioners to practice in Nigeria for a minimum of five years before being granted a full license to practice.

This bill, sponsored by Rep. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson is unpatriotic, ill-timed and a breach of the fundamental human right of doctors as enshrined in the 1999 constitution of Nigeria as amended.

This bill is aimed at strangulating the medical profession and making mockery of her autonomy.

The reason given by Rep. Johnson for sponsoring this bill will end up achieving the direct opposite as the bill seeks to enslave Nigerian trained doctors and paralyze the health care system. The search for greener pastures abroad can be reduced by making our land and pasture green, properly equipping our hospitals, better treatment for doctors and the brain drain will be adequately controlled. Rep. Johnson at this point should be steering conversations on medical tourism and not doctor slavery.

We firmly believe that this bill is not the solution to the problem of brain drain, and we stand against it in its entirety in the strongest possible terms.

The intention behind the sponsorship of this bill does not take into consideration the root causes of brain drain in Nigeria. The issue of brain drain is multifaceted and requires a more comprehensive approach to tackle it.

Instead of trying to forcefully take doctors as slaves, the lawmakers should be focusing on creating an enabling environment that encourages doctors to stay and work in Nigeria. The lack of infrastructure, inadequate and inappropriate remuneration, and poor working conditions are some of the major factors driving medical professionals away from Nigeria. These issues need to be addressed if we want to attract and retain our healthcare professionals; make our land green.

We also believe that the bill is a violation of the fundamental human rights of medical professionals and should not see the light of the day. The government has no right to force doctors to work in a particular location against their will- it is an affront to their autonomy and choice. We also unequivocally state that this bill will discourage students from pursuing medical education in Nigeria, which will further exacerbate the problem of the shortage of healthcare professionals.

A better way to bring up the issue of being trained with “tax payer subsidies” would be to have it optional, the option of paying for medical education at the real cost value, the option of obtaining student loans and also the option of going for the subsidized medical education with the caveat of staying behind for a certain number of years to “pay back”. Besides, not all Doctors in the country are trained on subsidy; one thing the bill failed to capture. Doctors need to have a choice, even before they start their training so they can make better informed decisions.

Additionally, we strongly believe that the bill is arbitrary in nature and totally unconstitutional- it deprives the Nigerian-trained medical and dental practitioners of their fundamental right to freedom of movement by arbitrarily imposing restrictions on their movements against the provision of Section 41 the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In conclusion, @NiMSA_Nigeria vehemently opposes this bill in part and in one whole. We call on the sponsor of the bill to withdraw it with immediate effect and seek better ways of finding a lasting solution to the problem of brain drain by consultative collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the health sector coupled with the government's willingness to address the root causes and underlying issues that drive healthcare professionals away from Nigeria.

The Nigerian medical students’ association, is eager for a better health system hence, our willingness to work with the government, as we have always done, to find lasting solutions to the issues plaguing the healthcare system.

The health sector is essential to the growth and development of our nation, and we must take steps to ensure that our healthcare professionals stay and contribute to the growth of our country.

We say *NO* to this bill,
Rather, make our land and pasture green.

Ejim Egba,
NiMSA President

Previous thread https://www.nairaland.com/7643700/bill-prevent-medical-doctors-getting

Who is the mugu that sold the idea in the first place that doctors in Nigeria are trained for free/subsidized?

Who pays the highest school fees in public universities in Nigeria? Answer is Medical Students. Plus 6+ years in school.

Who pays the highest school fees in private universities in Nigeria? Answer is Medical Students.

Where is the subsidy?

Government cannot equip the public hospitals. Compare Nigerian hospitals with the hospitals abroad and you will bow your head in shame. Poorly equipped. Yet they want to compare school fees in Nigeria to school fees abroad

Oya! Charge 10million per year for school fees.

The Professors that are leaving, is it because of money? The system is frustrating and dissatisfying.

Ignorant people everywhere in the name of leaders.

After passing the bill, the lawmakers should bring back their children to Nigeria to study Medicine.

Reference:
It is just an advisory.
It is only in these parts of the world a single individual determines economic policy as if these loans are personal.

But our unfortunate citizens are more interested in who is the Chief Executive than the quality of the government that he operates in. They should instead demand that their governor be stripped of any power to solely determine monetary policy.

In other places government is a continuum and economic policy is a long term multi term establishment that gives investors of every kind confidence.

A threat like this will only cause the state financial damage and downgraded ratings.

There are some things that should not be done at certain times, Sir. For instance, taking of loans.

This is a transition period. The current administration should be interfacing with the incoming administration, as well as getting their handover notes ready.

If the state really needs a loan, it is only fair that the decision should be taken by the new government when they settle down.

Car Talk / Re: 6 Lies Nigerian Car Dealers Tell Prospective Buyers by Porpulace: 2:37pm On Mar 27, 2023
kekakuz:
Some of the 3 phrases car dealers use to deceive prospective buyers

1. Na woman use am.
Bro na wash. I have fallen for this trick once and I will never fall again.it is believed that women don't use cars rough or women drive delicately so the car must still be in a good shape. That is a lie. Women are the worse car user and I say this with no apology. They don't pay attention to dashboard warnings, they don't check their fluids and this often lead to a damaged engine or a burnt gasket. If you see a car used by a woman for a long time, just check if the engine has been opened. My claims here are backed by my experience.

2. Direct Belgium standard.
Another Big lie here .once you have serviced your car with Nigerian oil, never call that car Direct Belgium standard. Driving your car on Nigerian road for 6 months is equal to driving it abroad for 3 years. Don't fall for this trick. Ensure you check well.

3. AC just needs gas toping/Small leakage.
Just be ready to buy compressor and condenser. All those lies are not necessary.some dealers also Intentionally tamper with the AC to hide an ailing engine. They know you will see how bad the engine is when you run the AC.

4.Distress sale.

If you want to sell your car on distress, you take it to Ladipo or apo and sell immediately at half the worth. Why would you tell me a distress sale Corolla is going for 2.5Million. bro how much be new one .

5.Japa sales
Just like distress sales,if you want to sell because of japa please take your car to a car stand. They will buy it sharp sharp.

6. The owner wants to see the alert before releasing the original Papers.
You don buy Gbese. either the custom papers are fake or it does not have at all . Some dealers will even show you electronic copies but it's all a strategy.

7) Are you buying?
Someone else wants to buy this car sharp sharp oh.

Nairaland / General / Election Starter Pack:5 Things You Need To Take With You As You Go To Vote by Porpulace: 6:33am On Feb 25, 2023
The D-Day is finally here. Nigerians are going to the polls this morning to elect their President and National Assembly members.

Here are 5 things you need to leave your house with as you head to your polling units:

1) A means of communication.

Being outside on election day can be worrisome for some people because of security concerns.

However, all you need to do is to carry a phone in your pocket as you step out. Make sure you have enough airtime too.

If possible, take a simple phone with you to avoid unnecessary attention.

You can easily make calls or send SMS while at your polling station to monitor the situation within your area.

2) Cash

It's true we are currently having a cash crunch.

However, you need to find some cash from anywhere and put in your pocket as you move.

It may be some hundreds of naira or some thousands as the case may be.

Imagine taking a bike to your polling unit and you cannot make a transfer because your bank app is not going through?

If your polling unit is at your backyard, you may not bother.

3) Water

As we know, we are still facing some heat within this period.

Imagine what will happen when hundreds of people gather at a poll in unit, for hours.

You are definitely going to sweat today.

If you're not careful, you may get dehydrated.

The solution? Ensure you carry drinking water to your polling unit. It may be satchets or bottle of water, depending on what you can afford.

You may not have the opportunity of eating while waiting to vote. However, you can quickly get out your water and drink.

You need to stay alive to witness the New Nigeria.

4) Handkerchief

As we've noted earlier, the weather is still hot. You will most likely sweat today.

You need to go with your handkerchief, to wipe your face and arms when you sweat. Imagine using your fingers or your clothes to clean out the sweat. It's going to look unsightly.

Endeavour to take your handkerchief or face towel so you can wipe your sweat and remain comfortable while on the queue.

5) Add yours...

Properties / Re: Solar Inverters: Cost Implication, Durability And Issues by Porpulace: 1:13pm On Feb 13, 2023
Compliant:
Greetings.

After seeing a topic that made front page on power situation in Nigeria, I felt it will be necessary to create this thread for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSE ONLY.

Please let's share ideas on this solar installation, cost implications, down side and many more.

I neither sell nor have knowledge of solar system but on 24th December 2022 I engaged someone to install solar for me due to the power situation here in Abuja especially during dry season.

Well to cut the long story short, I decided to go for 3kva inverter with inbuilt charge controller, 4 280w felicity mono panel with 2 200amh dry cell battery with a cost implication of around 1 million

Breakdown:
1. 280w felicity mono panel 84,000 per 1 ( note: the person promised me 300w for 84,000 only for him to bring 280w and the excuse he gave me was that the 300w is not a strong product but felicity product is durable)

2. 3KVA 24V inverter with inbuilt charge controller 290,000

3. Battery 200amh 160,000 per 1 dry cell

4. Battery rack, installation kits and installation charge 150,000

Mind you, I base in Abuja where things are a little expensive, so i believed its possible to get it at a cheaper rate elsewhere.

I did not connect my fridge at all but lighting points are connected, smart TV of 55inche and 45inche are connected and I can use any depending if I am in the seating room or inner room.

DISCOVERY: once it is 6:30pm the solar stop charging via panel and i can use my bulbs and TV and 2 fans for hours (i.e i watch TV from 6:30pm to maybe 9pm before going to bed and i switch on at least 8 bulbs from that 6:30pm till 6:30am the following day when the inverter automatically starts charging again via solar.

I also discover that in this solar installation, having a very good battery will safe you alot and also dry cell battery can go bad even within 2months if installed before and then you disconnect and reconnect after like 2-3month probably due to relocation issue.

Please kindly share your own view without insult let's learn one or two things.

Thanks

Good evening, please how do I politely tell my married ex to stop bringing back our past memories?

My ex and I separated on good terms, he is AS likewise myself so we had to go on our separate ways. It over 6 years that we separated but we still talk once in a while. I don’t have any feelings for him anymore but I don’t know about him and I don’t have any intention of seeing him either though we are far away from each other.

I don’t want to block him and I don’t want to offend him ,but when I take a picture with a random male friend and I upload it on my status ,he tells me he is jealous that the guy is an idiot for holding me or touching me. Asking for my recent pictures and sending me my old pictures that I don’t even remember existed.

This guy is married with a child. How to I politely tell him to stop all this because I don’t feel comfortable with them.

Can you just block him and move on?

He is trying to control and emotionally blackmail you.

It's a viral infection. With or without your intervention, it will run its course after some days.

He only needs something for the pain and to reduce itching.

Don't allow him scratch too much so he won't have permanent scars at the end.

Antibiotics aren't really needed except for fear of secondary bacterial infection.

Calamine lotion may also help
