Despite leaving Nigeria for the UK two years ago, Sabitu Adams gets paid each month as a junior official at a government agency back home.

Adams, who now works as a taxi driver in the UK, had his name changed by a BBC report to protect his identity. The taxi driver has yet to resign from his job in Nigeria.

Adams is one of the thousands of ghost workers, a rampant issue in the Nigerian civil service. Each year, the government carries out biometric verifications and reels out numbers representing discovered ghost workers, and money saved.
But no one is ever announced to have been arrested or prosecuted.

Last week, President Bola Tinubu directed that all civil servants drawing salaries from the government after relocating abroad should be made to refund the money.
Tinubu also ordered that the culprits’ supervisors and department heads be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud while they were in charge.

Adams told the BBC that he was not worried about the president’s directives because he earned better as a taxi driver in the UK.

“When I heard about the president’s directive, I smiled because I know I am doing better here – and not worried,” the 36-year-old said.

The cab driver said he did not resign “in case I choose to go back to my job after a few years”.

Adams was quoted as saying he had an arrangement with his boss in Nigeria who is a “relative”.

Imagine people like Sabitu Adam will come out tomorrow and start cursing Nigeria forgetting he is also part of the rotten system.

Now, if by tomorrow the FG set up a new verification method, his likes and the useless boss will arrange people to stage a paid protest while the verification process should not commence.

As I used to say, majority of we Nigerians are very corrupt, our cries is just that the national cake has not reached us.

We have countless people like this, all they do everyday is to come online to paint Nigeria black whereas what they are doing contributed to the mess the country is suffering from.

Just imagine oo

After FG must have approved the new minimum wage, the next step is to fish out the ghost workers from the government workers.

Fishing them out would save us money. They are just too many.

Labour union are only interested in salary increase but not fishing out the ghost workers

There are few good Nigerians; it may not be up to 500k (out of 220 million). That's why the country is a mess. Most of the people who seem good just don't have the opportunity to steal from the country.

Most Nigerians are ripping this country apart. It simply shows that Nigerians don't love their country. It's a country of hypocritical, opportunistic and dubious people.

There's no MDA where these things happen that their directors or perm secs are not aware of. Most times, those people share the money with their superiors. Those heads should be prosecuted and made to refund every kobo.

Complete selfishness… makes no sense at all.. and after all everyone will be blaming the government

If you know you won japa.. resign before you fly
If you don’t trust ur village people… then send a resignation letter when you land successfully…

Government should try and introduce Headcount and biometrics monthly for all workers to keep them in tracks….

If they can follow NYSC system… it will save Nigeria lot of money

He earns way more and saves way more as a cab driver in the UK than with his civil service job in Nigeria.

Read the post. He has been collecting salary for 2 years when he was not even in the country let alone at his job. Was Tinubu the president 2 years ago?
You are a good example of another dishonest Nigerian.

It is good to know that you are also part of the corrupt people who have benefited from the system rottenness for more than 9 years.

No wonder you have vowed to die on top the corruption.

Firstly this issue is not peculiar to Nigeria alone, so any person blaming Nigerians as citizens is only decieving himself...

The government is 100% to take the blame, when we shout to elect good leaders and strengthening the institutions, some of you think we are just being political....

Let us ask ourselves, if Nigeria was their(leaders) business that they own, would they allow a worker not come to work for 1 month and still pay him salary not to talk of 2 years?

There lies your answer, it tells you the type of leaders that have been put there, they don't care about the country, they are too busy looting their own share rather taking care of the system they have been put in charge...

This is like putting a bank vault in the middle of a busy street and leaving it open for weeks and expect that no one will take the money, even in America that bank vault will get empty...

So let's not deceive ourselves, when the government makes corruption attractive this is what happens, there is no where in the world you don't have people who try to take advantage of the system they operate in, it is the responsibility of the government to always checkmate them...

Even Dangote the richest man in Africa with a workforce of 10's of thousands or more cannot come and complain that a worker has not come to work for 2 years and he was still paying the worker....

The government is 100% at fault here

Yet these one will blame the government for their siblings and family member who are jobless in Nigeria.

Money that should be used to employ and pay new employers.
You don't work for Nigeria yet you collect salary monthly when many people don't have a job.
This should sincerely be criminal offence

Someone in the Ministry told me how Nigeria loses 100s of millions annually to these people.

They are the same people who would complain and curse Nigeria " it is a failed country" " it will never work"

While they are thieves contributing to the country's problems.

FG, President Tinubu, if you ever see this, prosecute these criminals and inform foreign countries that they are thieves. Once it starts to affect their credit rating and employability, they will sit up.
