I want to assume you are not from these continent, however if you must know in africa esp.. Nigeria inheritance are for children
The wife/mother is duely compensated but naa the children get the property and will manage the property
In the event of no will, the 1st child is entitled to largest share, even the law recognises the 1st born

What law is this? OP is not even the first born!

What if they sell your father's house without your notice, and you got to hear it accidentally. Even if you have no interest, you're still part of the family.

If a thief sells your property you will forget about it?

Define legacy please.

You can leave physical properties and money, but without proper upbringing, those things will amount to nothing... We have both witnessed such over and over again.

I have not said Fathers shouldn't leave anything for their kids... I simply maintain that it shouldn't be the most important bequest of a father to his kids.

An inheritance should never be more important than nurturing and upbringing.

Those examples you gave... You conveniently chose to ignore the aspect of good education, training and upbringing which enabled the legacies grow beyond the years of their original owners.

My children will not wait for my demise to inherit what I leave behind before they succeed and make their own legacies else I would have failed as a father.

An inheritance is not a right! It is a privilege bequeathed by a parent, who can also choose to bequeath it to anyone else.

A child's right is firstly life, followed by proper nurturing and training.

Many young people amount to nothing largely because they believe their parents have achieved enough for them to live off on.

Well, to each his own... I gladly rest my case. cool

Most educated guys and from good homes are roaming about in Lagos jobless and hungry and eventually pushed to Life of crime!

Stop insinuating that the OP is a prodigal son. Women are always scheming and very manipulative.
Something similar happened to me as the only son to my late father. My father died intestate so after his death I made a move to retrieve the credentials to his assets but unfortunately for me my mother (now late) conspired with my sisters to get hold of the credentials and keep it in their possession even before I thought about getting hold of the credentials. They were that wickedly sharp.

My sisters fueling the crisis tarnished my image to anyone who cared to listen but as God may have it as a perfect planner and grand schemer he made my late mum hand over all the credentials to my late father's property to me before she died. My sisters are still mad at me till date for having those credentials in my possession.

Life is a battlefield. Not even your own blood can be trusted to always have your back. My advice to the OP is to thread with wisdom from God. If it is the will of God for him, he will recover all what he lost as his inheritance from his scheming mother and sister.
Don't mind those foolish people ranting "go and hustle" I've seen some families where real manipulation and wickedness was practiced. Even if he is not entitled to 1kobo, he should be informed. That's a sign of respect/value.

He should meet the mum and find out why the property was sold. If he is not satisfied, he should take it up to the elders of his town or village.

The general rule of customary law is that;

"Where a land owner dies intestate, his self-acquired property devolves on his children as family property...."

"According to customary law, women may not own property and hence, upon the death of the husband, the ownership of his home is passed on to a male member of the family...."

Madam it is a two way thing!
Not everybody has that time to be arguing on a public forum! Did u see the op coming back to quote those supporting him either? The person I quoted was biased. Since we have sons selling their father's properties, we also have mothers killing their spouse because of properties. It is wrong for anyone to just conclude the op is the bad guy if that person has not been living with them. It is a divided family & anyone can be a victim. Even the op has no right to sell that house, it belongs to every first lineage of the father's generation if we are to go by tradition. The op can also be a victim, the sister or mother maybe the one fueling this whole trouble, no one can tell so long u are not living with them. Coming here to outrightly paint op a bad person because u want to support your gender is biased!
It's mother's killing their husbands but not husbands marrying a lady cos she is a big catch or her family is loaded.
Abuja is a typical example where men hunt single rich ladies. Men with absolutely nothing.

And oh, most of the men cruising with latest cars there are just cruising their wives cars. Cos women prefer not to blow their trumpets? Tomorrow an idiot of a son will come to sell of their house cos he thinks it belongs to his dad so it is his. In my neborhood in abuja( not just any neborhood), there are loads of female directors and name them but laid low. One lady drives an old jeep while the latest one she bought she just gave her husband. This lady single handedly sponsored her husbands people to school outside the country, got job and built befitting house in their village. And she is so nice, so many like her so like I said, you guys shoukd have s.all shame for once and stop pretending it's a one way traffic.

It's for those who don't have will that has time for this. Any property we have is jointly owned. Next of kin is both spouses before kids. See entitlement for my sweat. No be juju be that.

If my child is a nuisance and after giving him so many chances to be useful failed, I will remove him from inheritance.
Yes, it's done worldwide.
Oyibos will rather will their money to a charity, good and dedicated servant than an irresponsible child and they have absolutely no remorse about it.

To continue with generational inheritance, the successors have to be smart and ready to follow, obey and act on the rules that come with that generational inheritance.
Go and read up generational inheritance and what successors passed through to keep it running.

You don't just hand that over to an idiot.
In Nigeria, as we hardly follow generational inheritance, if I have an idiot as a son who will rather send me to an early grave by selling off what he didn't know how his dad and I acquired, I will sell that property off myself for my old age and if I have other kids, for them without blinking.
See entitlement mentality because I born you.
Go and make yours and do anything you want with it.

In igboland where I come from, I have seen father's share properties and if the first son is an idiot, will only get the house they live in and others goes to the rest of the kids. If you are responsible, nobody is selling off anything .
Always ready to fight for nonsense. Property wey no be his. Mcheeeew

Even if he owns his own properties, you think its right for "females" to cheat a man out of his father properties
The civil world is busy advocating for female right/priveleges while we agree women must be treated right .. should women be found shortchanging men

Madam u are deviating from my post!
What I said was simple, I don't understand the reason for this epistle u are writing. Except u want to tell me women are perfect beings? I said what the poster I quoted said was biased. It is wrong for her to label the op the bad person without bringing the possibility that he could also be the victim. It is a divided family, anyone can be desperate! Women also drag for properties, someone stated on this same thread how the sister connived with the mother to withhold some documents. It doesn't necessary mean the op was a bad person for this to happen, that's a lopsided way of viewing things.

All those that have made useful comments i thank you all it has really helped.
All those who didn't even know me and made negative comments on my person i pray that they evil that has visited my family will dwell with them 10 million folds.
I am not the first son I'm the second son.We are six in number my sister in question is the eldest and she has been a greedy person right from the time we were little and my mum always supports what ever she does whether right or wrong. My elder brother the first Son is a cool guy the best elder brother anyone can think of we all were well brought up no drug issues or nonsense behavior anywhere as insinuated by some nairalanders.
It's just greed on the part of my sister and she collaborated with my mum.
My sister and my mum stole the original documents of the house and sold without the consent of everybody.
We all did not agree to sell the house after my dad died but only my sister and mum were pushing for it to be sold.
We said ok since they have sold it no problem let the money be shared.
Why i shared my story was what if they refuse to share the money what can we do about it? Because there is no will and the document was stolen,so what can we do?
We have reported to family members/elders they are not happy about it they are doing their best to resolve the issue but my question is if they can't resolve issue what can we do? Have we lost our father's property?
We had no intention of selling it in the first place.

You are absolutely wrong ! Do u know how many legacies father's live for their children and is benefiting thousands of lived today?

How can spouses be ? U av no understanding that her family would not respect the properties and would either sell share or distribute to their own kids thereby erasing the legacies of that man's family ?

Reason am naaa! If the adeleke wives are allowed to inherit wealth would Davido be rich today?

You are ignorant. Except the man made a will specifically to give the property to the children, the person in charge of property when any of the spouse is dead is the other spouse. You are just advertising your ignorance
