Maize dry down percentage depends on the breeders and climate

Example: sc510 by seedco is 85 days.

Meaning at 85 days, it can be hervested fresh

But a further delay In hervest will start leading to dry down.

I like to ask you still in the spirit of maize farming about something i observed yesterday. I observed a guy beside my farm plant locally grown Maize around April 20. We know the local maize is 100-110 days. But to my surprise he harvested some as fresh yesterday, being the 89th day for sales and permit me to ask, how long can maize stay and can be harvested as fresh maize before they are considered hard and dried for dried maize harvesting ?

Good day boss, please I want to ask if it's mandatory to turn the soil before planting maize.
What happens if I just clear the bush and start planting immediately.

thats zero tillage

Turning the soil has its own advantages

Ok Boss. Thanks for the insights

Please attend to this question

Since you are planting and leaving the crops for 120 days, does this mean you will engage in third herbicides application? Because I want to believe that the second herbicides application will wear out when the maize are tasseling somewhere between the 55-60th day from planting. If you will be applying herbicides the third time, would it be the same composition you took your time to write about used for the second that will also be applied for the third application?
Re: My 1.5 Acre Maize Demo Plot. by Esude007: 10:14am On Jul 22
The third herbicide is post emergence herbicide.

That will come if I start noticing emergence

But for now nothing yet

I just followed you here from your beniseed .
I planted the Seedco 510 and the germination rate is like 100%. On the other hand, I hear people who planted the Sc719 complain about low germination rate.
What I noticed is that the yield of the SC510 is low compared to local varieties

my questions for you are:

(1) What was your fertilizer Management.

Hybrid maize is nothing without fertilizer just as broilers can't attain the required weight without feeding with formulated feeds.

(2) weed management: did u manage the weed well?

If u know u can't afford to follow GAP, don't plant hybrid
Re: My 1.5 Acre Maize Demo Plot. by Esude007: 1:36pm On Jul 23
Next operation will be pruning.

The lower leaves will be removed for better concentration.

Pruning in maize crops offers several benefits, including ยน:
- Higher yields: Pruning increases maize grain yield by removing selected branches, allowing the plant to focus energy on the remaining ears.
- Improved tree growth: Pruning promotes healthier tree growth by reducing competition for resources and allowing more sunlight to reach the trees.
- Enhanced stem shape: Pruning helps maintain a stronger, straighter stem by removing weaker branches.
- Better resource allocation: Pruning directs the plant's energy toward producing grain rather than supporting excess foliage.
- Increased profitability: Intensive pruning can lead to higher profits due to increased grain yields, making it a valuable practice for farmers.

I applied poultry manure before cultivation, NPK at 14days and Urea at about 6 weeks.
I have checked the website of seedco and the expected yield was 5-6 tonnes/hectare while that of sc719 is 10 to 12 tonnes/hectare.
I think it has to do with the variety

no it is not the variety.

Check the NPK level of Poultry manure.

If I can remember it is 1. 5:1.5:1

Maize require 27kg nitrogen, 7-9kg of phosphorus and same amount of potassium to produce 1 tonne all things being equal

before u can blame the variety, did u follow gap?

(1) What was your spacing.

(2) what is the population of crop per acre

Population plays an important role in the yield.

You are expected to plant 20kg of this sc510 per hectare.

Meaning a population of 53,333 per hectare

We have 2.5 acre in 1 hectare.

Meaning 21,333 per acre.

After ridge making, planting commenced. We used a locally fabricated maize planter.

***With the help of my fellow Agronomist. Mr Chilla, Mr Israel and Mr Monday...

***Using a maize planter makes it easy for u to get the optimum population.

***Maize population plays an important role in the yield.

***Let's do the math.

If u have let's say 10,000 stands of maize on your farm, and a maize cob weigh 350g after good Agronomic practice. After shelling it can reduce to 250g.

*If u convert to kg, u have 0.25kg.

*Multiply by 10,000 stands..... 2500kg

*100kg makes a bag... So u can get 25 bags of 100kg

**It was a very tedious task as u can see from (picture 2) that Agronomist Chilla was very tired from the pushing exercise.

****Agriculture is very hard to start, but if you start the right way you will become UNSTOPPABLE***

While a regular maize cob can have the weight you indicated in this analysis, can the cob of 510 match this fact given that this variety isn't best for weight but speed ?

it can't, that's why the yield potential of 510 is lower than that of 719 and 649.

From my experience, any crop that stay long before production yield more.

If you check, 510 is an early maturing variety

Speaking of which, the yield potential of seeds, is it the wet potential or dry potential ?

I.e what is the dry potential of 510 ?

Armyworms can significantly impact maize yields, causing damage to the crop in several ways:

1. Leaf damage: Armyworms feed on maize leaves, causing defoliation, which reduces photosynthesis and plant growth.

2. Ear damage: Armyworms can also feed on the ears, causing direct damage to the grain.

3. Reduced plant height: Armyworm damage can lead to stunted plant growth, reducing overall yield.

4. Delayed maturity: Armyworm damage can delay plant maturity, leading to reduced yields.

5. Increased susceptibility to disease: Armyworm damage can make plants more susceptible to disease.

6. Reduced grain quality: Armyworm damage can lead to reduced grain quality, making it less marketable.

7. Yield loss: Armyworm infestations can result in significant yield losses, ranging from 10% to 100% depending on the severity of the infestation.

It's essential to monitor fields regularly and implement control measures promptly to minimize the impact of armyworms on maize yields.

The fight continues

When fighting armyworm, make sure u alternate pesticide.

Armyworm can become adapted to a particular pesticide when used over time.

So if u apply pesticide that contain Cypermetrin this week, change to pesticide that contains either benzoate or Lambda cyhalotrin next week.

I used Cypermetrin over and over on my maize, they kept on multiplying seriously. I used DD FORCE too, the same thing.

Similar experience here bro. Na so dem dey graze on my farm dey ignore them but the day they reach climax, na so I vex enter their base few Km from my farm. Ordinary para and warning o, they dragged out their dagger and machete to attack me thinking i be one ajebo. That was the day I experimented all the epic war and martial arts films wey I don watch. I beat the hell out of them, overpowered and used my cutlass to pluck out one of their cutlasses. I had the opportunity to cut off the head of that particular one that I disarmed but my church mind no gree me. I just carry the machete go give the vigilante.

don't use them when the crop has emerged.

When u start noticing new weed, check for this 3 things.

(1) Are the weed broadleaf?

(2) Are the weed shamva grass ( spear grass like)?

(3) Are the weed both broadleaf and shamva grass?

If they are broadleaf, use herbicide that have nicosulphuron ( Striker, guardforce etc)

If they are shamva weed, use herbicide that contain halosulfuron ( cornforce)

If both appear, mix both nicosulphuron and halosulfuron.

Note: apply post emergence when the weed are very young.

Maybe when they have 2 to 3 leaf
