Hello Everyone,

I have a sibling who is about graduating in Bsc Engineering and wishes to go for a masters in Engineering next year. A friend of his said he can apply for a Phd instead.

1. Can he actually get schools to offer him admission to study Phd?
3. Would he need to write IELTS or some sort of English test to qualify for admissions in the US?
2. For someone wanting to go for a Phd next year, What are the likely financial implications (POF,visa fee and other hidden fees) to achieve his desire?

We basically need some sort of direction on how to go about this. If there's a thread dedicated to newbies with no idea on where to start their application from, kindly share the thread link with me.

Thanks in advance

Good morning to you all!
I'm due to apply to the University as a transfer applicant (undergraduate) and the documents I have with me are the following:
*University transcript
*Secondary school transcript
*NECO Result
*Resumé
*Personal Statement
*Recommendation letter (to be sent by my recommenders)
*Two certificates of return (student leader holding two positions simultaneously)

OTHERS
*Termination of employment
*Father's Certificate of Death
the above is to waive application fee for me.

Is there any document(s) I need to add?
Thank you all.

Cheers!

Good morning. I was refused visa around July in Abuja. And I have been trying to get another appointment date for Abuja but I keep seeing “there are currently no appointments available” is it advisable to restart the application and maybe pick Lagos or what’s the best thing to do now. Cause I really need to book an appointment…

Perhaps, go for schools that do not require GRE for admission and funding. You have a very good profile to get into good programs.

Hey 🤠

1. If your sibling will be graduating with 1st class and superb CGPA and have worked (assisted in exam scripts marking, research contributions, teachings etc) with lecturers / professors in his alma mater , and can get good recommendations then he may try Phd enrollment.

2. Yes he can get schools in the USA that will offer him admission but he must be an impressive outstanding graduate.

3. Yes. GRE is usually recommended for PhD, but some Universities can waive it if he can prove outstanding abilities in some areas i have mentioned before but i will recommend that he write GRE .

4. If your sibling meets the No 1 point above then he should start by contacting Universities and telling them his academic achievements and desire for PhD admission. He should try to apply to at the very least - two Universities . He will pay application fee ($50 to $150) and Spot deposit ($100 to $250) . POF demanded by the school, and the embassy depends on the average Fundings (deficit) your sibling will be receiving , and F-1 VISA fee (MRV) is on the USA embassy website for current rate quote.

5. There is no thread or group dedicated to the information you are looking for. This same thread you are reading from is the right and the best place.

6. Google Public Research Universities (USA have more than 3,000 Universities) in the USA and pick them one by one by contacting International Graduate Admissions .

PS; Some of the fees quoted above , as well as GRE can be waived.

Best Wishes 🙏

Hello everyone, good evening. Thanks for the tips and ideas that have been shared here so far. I would appreciate if I could also get counsel on what to do next in my case.

I studied Political Science for my undergraduate degree, however in Uni, I acquired professional certifications(CCNA, HCIA. I am already studying for CCNP and AWS) that allowed me to work as a Network Engineer. I have less than a year experience in this career.

For my Msc, which I hope to go for as soon as feasible, I would not like to continue with political science. Instead, I would like to Master in something related to Information Technology. The dilemma that confronts me now is how I can switch from a non-STEM Bsc, to a STEM Msc. I have checked online and I have not really seen a straightforward answer that addresses this.

I have checked with some schools in the UK that offer conversion courses for people without any background in the Msc course that they want to apply for. In fact, I know someone that studied Agricultural Engineering for his Bsc and completed his Msc in Software Engineering. However, I have not really seen something similar for US universities.

I would just like to know if there are people in similar shoes as mine and how they navigated their way to getting their preferred Msc course.

Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for your questions and I will answer them since I am not you who is answering someone's sincere questions and quest for clarifications with condescending questions.

I am here to ask despite my prior knowledge of the processing wait time the last time I checked, which might now indeed be outdated. Hence my emphasis on "recently" and follow-up questions to be sure if anyone has, in fact, done a student visa IW in Lagos within the past couple of weeks/months and to know their experience. My thoughts and prior knowledge regarding this matter are subject to change in the presence of new facts.

Now, if you don't mind, I would appreciate your help in responding to my last question with your current knowledge, if any, as the kind person that I believe you are.
Thank you.

Find a school that has what you want, apply with your BSc and IT certifications. Stress your work experience and how the program will help you fulfill your future dreams. Do not forget to highlight your transferability skills.

Applied for the Spring 2025 to University of Colorado Boulder as a transfer applicant using my 100Level transcript. My CGPA is 3.62.
On my secondary school transcript there was no gpa but scored As few Bs and few Cs so the person doing the application for me decided to put 88/100 where GPA was required without calculating, will this be an issue? Will it mar my chances of securing admission?

Also, they demanded for Academic history and I uploaded transcript and NECO instead. I want to know if this will be an issue.

@OyouTunjiUSA and GboyegaD I need your input please.

Hey 🤠

1. If the admission application has not been submitted finally then tell the person doing the application for you to find a good mathematician to help you calculate all your SSS1-SSS3 credits and write it as a single CGPA where it is demanded. For example, out of nine (9) WAEC subjects, if you have straight As in six (6) that should be 4.2 CGPA overall (sorry am not a mathematician) .

2. If you have submitted your application, then, there is nothing you can do. American institutions understands that foreign students usually misconstrue some application portal questions because of curriculum differences, so do not worry about it as much. They will ask you to act in a specific way if need be.

3. As per academic history , that can be anything from JSS1 up to your present level, therfore , the one you sent is still part of it. Do not fret much about it. The school will communicate to you if they want you to send additional material . Your mistake , miscalculation or misrepresentation of the school requirements does not mean automatic disqualification for you.

Best Wishes 🙏

Only the university can tell if this is an issue Horace, going forward, do not put a percentage you are not sure about in your application.
