LAGOS TRANSPORT COMMISSIONER LEADS KEY OFFICIALS ON REDLINE RAIL PASSENGER RIDE.

..confirms readiness for passenger operation.

As part of the ongoing trial phase, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, led key officials from the Ministry of Transportation on a non-fee paying ride aboard the Redline Rail.

The journey, which took place between Ikeja and Agbado, marked a significant milestone in the testing process.

For the past six weeks, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has conducted test runs without passengers, achieving a 90 percent success rate.cThis current phase, involving non-fee paying passengers, aims to study passenger behaviour along the corridor and providing LAMATA with valuable insights to fine-tune the operations before the official launch of passenger services.

The train arrived at Ikeja Train Station at approximately 1:19 PM, boarding passengers before making brief stops at Agege and Iju stations, and ultimately arriving at AgbadoTrain Station at 1:47 PM. The return journey from Agbadocommenced at 2:50 PM, with the train reaching Ikeja at 3:19 PM.
Among the key officials who joined the Commissioner on the exercise were; the Permanent Secretary, Mr. OlawaleMusa; the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Toyin Aremu and Directors in the Ministry of Transportation amongst others.

It's not high speed and the coaches are 2nd-hand trains Sanwolu but from Canada. But it's a good start at least, especially since it took Lagos more than 20 years to complete this rail system

The trains are used trains Sanwolu purchased in Canada and the news was shared on nairaland when he went for the purchase.

The intercity rail system was first initiated by Governor Bola Tinubu in 2003 under "Lagos Urban Transportation Project". Besides the BRT network, the rail network never took off as it was postponed multiple times by successive governors until Sanwolu.

How are they 2nd hand trains?

That they were built for another customer in the USA who eventually did not complete the purchase order, does not make it 2nd hand if Lagos is the first user.

Is Milwaukee in Canada?

Can anyone alive believe that a certain group of people did not vote for the man that accomplished this project instead they want to force a foolish soul who does not reason in the way of his people on Lagosians.

Claimed is name was Chinedu only to suddenly change it to Gbadebo to fool who ? Definitely not the great Yorubas.

Yet they will be the ones claiming someone voted out of tribalism, can any rationale being give me 1 single reason why you will have GRV vs Sanwolu in an election yet you chose to vote GRV. Do such fools not need mental evaluation to save them from foolishness..

Just one single reason even if it's a bad one n earn 10K.

The trains were bought from Milwaukee in the US not Canada. They have never been used on any rail tracks before so theu are not second hand.

The blue line construction was started by previous administrations but the red line was kicked off by the Sanwo-Olu administration.

Lagos State government is trying, but can still do better. The central government led by Senator Bola Tinubu isn't trying at all! Instead of focusing on redeeming the battered image of his administration by providing good governance, which is the primary responsibility, Tinubu is making all efforts to silence oppositions of his maladministrative government and using tax payers money to pay media thugs to assassinate the characters of oppositions.

Tinubu must be kicked outta power!!!

Fake news.

The trains are not used. A city ordered for the trains, but there was an election before they finished building the trains and the new government decided that it didn't want the trains. The Lagos State Government then bought it from the manufacturer. I created the thread back then.

The Red Line was started and completed by Governor Sanwo-Olu.

So this madness happens in saner climes too, whereby a govt will initiate a project that is beneficial to the people, then his successor comes in and cancels. Well, I rarely see abandoned projects through successive administrations though.

Trains intended for unbuilt Milwaukee-Madison high-speed rail line going to Nigeria.

Governor of Nigeria's Lagos State visits Milwaukee to complete purchase from train manufacturer Talgo

Two trains originally intended for a high-speed rail line to connect Madison and Milwaukee are headed for Nigeria. The governor of that country's Lagos State was in Milwaukee on Tuesday to purchase the unused trains.

The trains are set to become part of West Africa's first operational metro system, according to a press release.

At a public event at the Milwaukee facilities of Spanish train manufacturer Talgo, acting Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson welcomed Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

"It's a little bittersweet," Johnson said after the event. "I'm sending my congratulations to the governor in Lagos State in Nigeria, but also a little disappointed that we missed out on the opportunity to have those trainsets operating here in Milwaukee and in Wisconsin."

It's the latest turn in a decade-long saga revolving around high-speed rail, which Wisconsin Public Radio previously covered in the 2019 podcast series "Derailed."

Milwaukee Alder Robert Bauman was not at the event, but said the ending is much like the entire storyline.

"It's kind of an absurd ending to an absurd tale," Bauman said.

In 2009, Wisconsin's then-Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, announced a deal with Talgo for two new trains to be built in the state and used for a high-speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison. In the same year, Wisconsin was awarded $810 million for the project in a federal stimulus bill.

Frank Busalacchi was Wisconsin's Secretary of Transportation at the time.

"I certainly didn't expect what happened to happen," said Busalacchi. "It was unfortunate, but I think now, as you look and see where the world is going, not just our country, where the world is going, it was the right thing to do."

The plans died off after Republican Scott Walker became governor. But by 2012, Talgo had built the trains, and sent an invoice to the state for them. Later that year, Talgo terminated the contract and sued the state, kicking off a court dispute that lasted almost three years.

Ultimately, under the terms of a settlement between Wisconsin and Talgo, the state paid the company a total of $50 million for the trains, which remained under the company's ownership.

"The partisanship got so deep that literally, Wisconsin is making decisions that amount to shooting yourself in both feet," Bauman said. "Who buys a set of train cars, refuses to complete the contract, ends up getting sued, settles, pays out another $50-some million in damages, and then you don't even get the cars?"

The trains sat unused in an Amtrak facility in Indiana for years, a lasting reminder of the dispute. They eventually returned to Talgo's plant in Milwaukee in 2019.

"I'm glad that they were able now to sell them to somebody, that somebody is going to use them," Busalacchi said. "The fact that after many years, Talgo's found a buyer for the trains, I mean, kudos to them."

Around when the trains came back to Milwaukee, Talgo spokespeople floated the possibility of the trains finding a use on Amtrak's Cascades line in the Pacific Northwest, but last year Amtrak announced Siemens Mobility would produce new trains for the line instead.

"It is what it is," Bauman said. "They're moving on to Nigeria. Good for the Nigerians."

The first phase of the Nigerian metro system the Talgo trains are set to become part of is expected to begin operation later this year, serving up to half a million passengers in the Lagos area daily.

Johnson said conversations about high-speed rail in Wisconsin have not gone away.

"I hope that at some point, we're still able to realize that vision for a more connected community," said Johnson.

Some Nigerians will never experience good things in their life time.

A government brought good initiatives but some children of perdition are saying the train coaches are second hand , that is their only compliment to the project.

God will continue to keep our leaders and give them wisdom.
