Born2berich: The bold is actually not true (in all cases). We need to properly understand dividend dates so as not to miss out on dividend after purchasing a stock for dividend purpose. I noticed that in Naija, the date of closure is assumed to be the ex-dividend date by most coys. Ex-dividend date is actually the date on or after which a stock trades ex-dividend (without dividend). In the NSE, this date is rarely indicated in coys financial reports. Only few (sincere) companies will mention it clearly in their reports. If you're buying a stock for dividend purpose you must put settlement date into consideration (the date on which the transaction gets completed). Remember if you buy a stock, the T+3 trading rule says you must allow 3 business days for the transaction to be finalized (this is when you become the official owner of the stock). The bottom line is, if the closure date is 30th, you have to buy the stock on or before 27th to officially qualify for dividends. However, some companies may allow investors who bought a day or two before the closure date to qualify (but this must be clearly stated in their reports). It is better to use dates in the company's report to check for divided qualification. Some of the dates published on NSE website are misleading. Companies that want to be transparent will use a date range as closure date to be published on the NSE website (e.g 1st – 5th). This is my own understanding of dividend dates. 5 Likes |

carpenter: Just like yourself,I am never a fan of bonuses. Traders might feel the same way too. Huge OS makes price movements a bit sluggish and sometimes makes nonsense of your holdings if the company experiences sluggish growth or have a low ROE in relation to its OS. I feel some coys do that to keep the price within the psychological range of attraction for retails investors who equate low prices to cheap valuation. |

Meristem still down. But if you want to excute any mandate, just send them a mail - contact@meristemng.com I send them mine via email and they worked on it within 3 minutes (Not bad) I've entered the Transcrop Bus and Flourmill too (As usual, not a recommendation - The choice is always yours) |

Elai147: Seriously, I agree with you but, I am only trying to guess what the board has in mind like everyone else. What is the implication of this statement from that podcast: We intend to effectively manage dividend pay-out and increase retention as a means of capital management, given so many factors i.e. lack of debt in market, liquidity in the market - FBNH GM 1 Like |

I hope some guys are not trapped especially on a stock i termed LOW VOLATILITY @ Eterna. If you are not for long term, I'll advise you claim your profit now. The reason why most stocks have not dropped below close price of yesterday is because of the max BID data on the stocks @ the start of trade today. NB: by tuesday, most guys will understand the full meaning of a free fall on most of the stocks. |

carpenter: You are right. Not all bonuses are good deals. Sometimes it pays more to take advantage of capital appreciation from the dividend rally and forget the bonus. If a company declares dividend and bonus and I'm in for short/mid term, I usually wait until a day before closure date (when the stock will be marked down for bonus and dividend) to see how much I can gain on capital appreciation. After a guesstimate of the possible mark down price and a consideration on the strength of the coy to go back to its previous trading price, I make my decision to sell or hold. 2 Likes |

Aks: Sir, i agree with you on low volatility stocks but on the other hand, i guess it is too early to sell looking at some good stocks with strong fundamentals and selling below their book value. And it will be determined on the price each traders or investors buy such stocks. It is just my own opinion not a recommendation sha 2 Likes |

megainvest: You may not be far from the truth. They've given a clear indication that we should not expect a bumper dividend. They may approve a meager dividend and use bonus of 1 for 20 to appease the gods 1 Like |

Elai147: You seem to have been missing in action for a while in this forum I can even understand dividends, it gives me an opportunity to get some of my money back to meet other needs besides the feel good factor. As for bonuses, it just favours the company because more investors and speculators might be tempted to buy more at lower values. |

bigjay01: I listened to the conference call and i have to agree with you that they might not pay up to what we expect. From the response given to a guy's question, they said in terms of dividend, it is stated that they will increased retention on capital from retain earnings..and will capitalize all, if not most of the profit for the nine months...what ever dividned paid will be based will be determined after the full year audit. 1 Like |
