I'm sure there must be a tenable reason why she acted this way and why she had the backing of her family. Probably the man never cared about the boy and being the person who she is, who has money to cater for the boy, she wasn't bothered by his behavior and never had reason to run to him begging him for the wherewithal of the boys sustenance.
So she and her family had gotten used to the fact that he cared less probably, and decided not to go through whatever rigor it would take to dialogue with someone they hadn't dialogued with in a long while.
