obaaderemi: Like I keep saying, there are many perspectives to an event. People talk about the coup and the subsequent war, from the perspective that they know, or the side of events that they witnessed. The best thing to do is to read widely, and study as many different accounts as possible, from as many different personae who witnessed the events. Then put the events together in chronological order, and only accept those that stand the test of truth and accuracy, or the ones corroborated by solid evidence. A few have been brainwashed by propaganda spun by individuals, who did not actually witness the event. And they have taken it as the gospel truth. Nku5, vanbonattel and dede know how to wallow in conjecture, presumptions, assumptions, hypothetical assertions and falsehood. Each time I read their comments, I just laugh. I haven't laughed so hard in years. One of their clownish supporters here, is even trying really hard to claim that Awolowo masterminded the January 1966 coup, because the coup plotters planned to make him the new head of government if they succeeded. How was he in support of the coup?? Did Awolowo plan any coup with them, or supply them with information, guns, resources and materials? Don't forget that Awo was even in prison, at that time. I still keep asking, Sardauna, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and even Festus Okotie-Eboh did not resist arrest, yet they were killed! And those who killed them hailed from which ethnic group? One fact that can never be rewritten, is that during that coup the only soldiers that fired the shots that killed political leaders from other ethnic groups, were Igbo. Fact! 2 Likes |

It's interesting that some posters here like to say that Anioma Igbos and Onitsha Igbos aren't really Igbo yet when it comes to this coup, they're only too happy to claim that the likes of Nzeogwu and Ifeajuna are full-blooded Igbo men. Which one is it? 5 Likes 1 Share |

laudate: You just shot your argument in the foot.On one hand you say Fani-Kayode escaped from his captors while Akintola was being shot at, on the other hand you quote Akinjide's account which states that Fani-Kayode was taken from Ibadan to Federal Guards Mess, Ikoyi, Lagos! There he was released by "Loyal Troops". Who was in charge of the loyal troops in Lagos that morning? Was it not General Ironsi, a confirmed Onye Igbo? Stop weaving stories you cant defend You have easily confirmed what Ademoyega said in his book and on the page I uploaded. Like I said you are welcome to your prejudice but your narratives are dropping dead faster than flies in a baygon factory. Mimi525: This is certainly not true. In fact, I would say that tribalism in Nigeria has actually gotten worse over the last couple of years- wouldn't you agree? I too used to be like you and believe in a utopian Nigerian society, where the country would use each tribe's strengths to progress and finally live up to its nickname as the 'Giant of Africa'. Alas, I got my wake up call, not all of a sudden, but when I decided to read a few history books and compare the situation then to the situation now. I realised that both periods were eerily similar to each other. I then thought to myself, if nothing has changed in almost 60 years of independence, what on earth is going to make it change now? Nothing. A war that divided the country and killed millions of its citizens didn't change much- for the better, anyway- so I honestly don't see what else will. It's better for my people, the Igbos, if we go our separate ways. I honestly don't hate anyone, I'm just tired of this country. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Igboid: Your base you entire argument on Fajuyi . Your logic is as follows: Since Fajuyi is Yoruba and supported a largely Ibo coup plotist, the coup could have never been an Ibo thing. However, if it were not an Ibo coup an eastern leader would not have emerged. Neither would a majority of the post be given to easterners. |

nku5: I said Fani-Kayode escaped death. And anyone reading through all the accounts connected with his escape, would realise that he escaped death through the hand of Providence, not because an onye Igbo rescued him. Was it Ironsi that personally took him out of the grip of his captors who abducted him, did Ironsi take him to the barracks? As for the other questions I asked, you have dodged it several times on this thread by latching on to irrelevant stories. Oya, for the last time, "Sardauna, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and even Festus Okotie-Eboh did not resist arrest, yet they were killed! Why?? And those who killed them hailed from which ethnic group?" Abi, your bible on the war written by Ademoyega did not contain answers to this question, as well? |

escapefromusa: You forgot to add: All the political leaders from other ethnic groups who were killed during the coup, were shot by soldiers of Igbo extraction. And for that reason, most people gave the coup an ethnic colouration. The NL e-warriors on this thread, have been struggling to rewrite this aspect of history. Yet they are the ones that have argued ad nauseaum on other threads, that Anioma people are nothing, but Igbo. Now that people are calling the Anioma coup plotters Igbo, they are offended and have started making noise. Odi egwu! 1 Like |

nku5: Oh, that is the new angle you want to start from? Murtala Mohammed came from....where? Dimka, Bisalla & co, who killed him hailed from ....where? A lot of Southerners saw it as a Northern coup, carried out by Northern minorities against core Northern chaps. Apart from that, the coup plotters and coup victims were all military men (i.e. military boys vs. military generals). And people tagged it as such, or how else would people have described it? It was quite different from the January 1966 coup, where military boys summarily executed elected civilian political leaders of other ethnic groups, who were unarmed except for one person. Now, stop digressing. If the 1976 coup bothers you so much, start another thread for it, and we can open up discussions there. Do not derail this thread, biko. 1 Like |

nku5: Because it did not fit their agenda. It's not just that poster who's guilty of this; you rarely hear any Nigerians refer to that coup as the Plateau coup. They tried so hard to paint the first military coup as an Igbo coup because they needed an excuse to 'cut the Igbo to size'. Essentially, that coup and, by extension, the war, gave Nigerians a reason to 'blame' the Igbos for their misfortune as a nation. This enabled them to marginalise the Igbo with the support of the majority and if the Igbos complained, they would just claim that the "Igbos are trying to dominate again". It's a very worrying trend- the Nazis used the same tactics against the Jews. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Military boys who hailed from Northern minority communities, carried out a coup against their fellow military compatriots who hailed from the core north, which led most people to view it as a military affair. Yet someone is HERE, complaining that it was not tagged a Plateau/Angas coup?? I laugh in Greek!! |

Ngozi123:... Smart observation. When one 'ikenna' from Anioma or Ikwerre or an indigenous igbo from rivers state committed a crime, the igbo ethnic group will be crucified by some unscrupulous elements but when such a fellow did outstandingly well in his chosen profession, same bad elements will denied his igboness because according to them Anioma, Ikwerre are not igbos. Hypocrisy is a dangerous sickness. The greatest gift God almighty gave Ndigbo that always sets us apart even in the midst of persecution, outright falsehood and deliberate distortion of facts by unscrupulous elements is our Human resources and productivity, resilience and entrepreneurial acumen.I took solace in those qualities because they are indelible, immutable and irrevocable. God bless Ndigbo. 2 Likes |

Newmanluckyman: Amen. Nzeogwu and Ifeajuna were full-blooded Igbo men and you'd hardly see any Igbos denying that fact- I'm actually very proud of the former in particular. Sometimes, when a child is adopted and they make a mistake, their adoptive family will be quick to highlight their adopted status but a blood brother is a blood brother no matter what. 3 Likes |

laudate:... In your deliberate bid to buttress your points that 1966 coup was an 'igbo coup', you have unwittingly let the cat out of the bag. So you have finally believed that there are indigenous igbos in Midwest now South South? Also, that Osadebe Dennis the former premier of the Midwest is also an igbo man? So you won't deny anymore that there wasn't any indigenous igbos in Niger Delta? If you answer yes to those questions objectively, do you now see why igbos referred to themselves as SE/SS? Hope you won't continue making caricature of igbos or saying that they are attaching themselves to SS. It is only the truth that will set us free and it begins with you now.
