That is so stupid. How do people think that we are not better together. Whether or not you understand it the bigger the country's land mass, the better chances a country can succeed. The Hausa's have vast land for farming. Igbo's have oil, and the yoruba's have infrastructure and technology. How do you not realize the beautiful things the three cultures can do for the country. Only older folks are stuck with this stupid mentality. The younger Igbo's, yoruba's and Hausa's dont engage in this petty nonsense. We have found a way to live peacefully in Lagos and become productive with the help of everyone. What is wrong with Your generation. If White people can get along with black people in ghettos in the USA. What excuse do you have. Lets stop this ridiculous infighting and and find a way to get rid of our corrupt leaders of every tribe, and move foward.

Your remarks are beautiful and they make a lot of sense. But you are preaching to people who are ill-informed and thrive on propaganda. Save your breath, because they won't listen. Their minds have been clouded by prejudice and hate. undecided

I saw your update. That is actually the general version;that fanikayode was taken to lagos;even if your earlier version is incorrect, that illiterate specimen was also wrong by saying fani was rescued by an igbo army officer. On another note,it seems everyone who had written a book about the events of that period has been economical with the truth.we will never know everything about that time.

Like I keep saying, there are many perspectives to an event. undecided People talk about the coup and the subsequent war, from the perspective that they know, or the side of events that they witnessed. The best thing to do is to read widely, and study as many different accounts as possible, from as many different personae who witnessed the events. Then put the events together in chronological order, and only accept those that stand the test of truth and accuracy, or the ones corroborated by solid evidence. cool

A few have been brainwashed by propaganda spun by individuals, who did not actually witness the event. And they have taken it as the gospel truth. Nku5, vanbonattel and dede know how to wallow in conjecture, presumptions, assumptions, hypothetical assertions and falsehood. Each time I read their comments, I just laugh. I haven't laughed so hard in years. grin

One of their clownish supporters here, is even trying really hard to claim that Awolowo masterminded the January 1966 coup, because the coup plotters planned to make him the new head of government if they succeeded. How was he in support of the coup?? Did Awolowo plan any coup with them, or supply them with information, guns, resources and materials? Don't forget that Awo was even in prison, at that time. sad

I still keep asking, Sardauna, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and even Festus Okotie-Eboh did not resist arrest, yet they were killed! And those who killed them hailed from which ethnic group?

One fact that can never be rewritten, is that during that coup the only soldiers that fired the shots that killed political leaders from other ethnic groups, were Igbo. Fact!

It has been published that Fani-Kayode was abducted by Nwobosi's men, and driven to Akintola's house. He escaped death from there, while gun fire was being exchanged by both parties. So how was he rescued or recaptured? In what way did Ademoyega do justice to my questions, please? shocked You are the one who made an assertion, so the onus is on you to prove it. Guy, is it that you did not understand my question, or you are deliberately playing the ostrich? That page from Ademoyega's book did not contain the actual blow-by-blow details of how Fani-Kayode escaped death, and your claim that 'he was rescued by soldiers controlled by an Igbo man?' So can you please provide the url link or source showing the exact details of how Fani-Kayode escaped death on the night of the coup, and the name of the Igbo man who rescued him with soldiers? Still waiting! undecided

Here is an excerpt from another article, on what eventually happened to the late Chief Fani-Kayode:

I do not even want to talk about Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh the late Finance Minister who did NOT resist arrest but was also killed by the coup plotters.

You just shot your argument in the foot.On one hand you say Fani-Kayode escaped from his captors while Akintola was being shot at, on the other hand you quote Akinjide's account which states that Fani-Kayode was taken from Ibadan to Federal Guards Mess, Ikoyi, Lagos! There he was released by "Loyal Troops". Who was in charge of the loyal troops in Lagos that morning?

Was it not General Ironsi, a confirmed Onye Igbo?

This is certainly not true. In fact, I would say that tribalism in Nigeria has actually gotten worse over the last couple of years- wouldn't you agree?

I too used to be like you and believe in a utopian Nigerian society, where the country would use each tribe's strengths to progress and finally live up to its nickname as the 'Giant of Africa'. Alas, I got my wake up call, not all of a sudden, but when I decided to read a few history books and compare the situation then to the situation now. I realised that both periods were eerily similar to each other. I then thought to myself, if nothing has changed in almost 60 years of independence, what on earth is going to make it change now? Nothing. A war that divided the country and killed millions of its citizens didn't change much- for the better, anyway- so I honestly don't see what else will. It's better for my people, the Igbos, if we go our separate ways. I honestly don't hate anyone, I'm just tired of this country. undecided

What we know so far from history:

1. Fajuyi mentored and supported Nzeogwu and co coup. He obviously never saw it as an Igbo coup.

2. When the coup failed, Fajuyi still never saw the coup as Igbo coup, he shielded Nzeogwu and co from execution as he pleaded their case before Ironsi.

3. Ademoyega one of the key actors of the coup at no point called the coup Igbo coup, even after it failed

4. The propaganda of "Igbo coup" as propagated by treacherous elements from south west could not stand without first exonerating Fajuyi from the coup, and this they had to do by propounding the Matyr falsehood story for Fajuyi, but we know better. wink

Your base you entire argument on Fajuyi . Your logic is as follows:

Since Fajuyi is Yoruba and supported a largely Ibo coup plotist, the coup could have never been an Ibo thing.

However, if it were not an Ibo coup an eastern leader would not have emerged. Neither would a majority of the post be given to easterners.

I said Fani-Kayode escaped death. sad And anyone reading through all the accounts connected with his escape, would realise that he escaped death through the hand of Providence, not because an onye Igbo rescued him. Was it Ironsi that personally took him out of the grip of his captors who abducted him, did Ironsi take him to the barracks? As for the other questions I asked, you have dodged it several times on this thread by latching on to irrelevant stories.

Oya, for the last time, "Sardauna, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and even Festus Okotie-Eboh did not resist arrest, yet they were killed! Why?? And those who killed them hailed from which ethnic group?" And for that reason, most people gave the coup an ethnic colouration. The NL e-warriors on this thread, have been struggling to rewrite this aspect of history. undecided

Yet they are the ones that have argued ad nauseaum on other threads, that Anioma people are nothing, but Igbo. Now that people are calling the Anioma coup plotters Igbo, they are offended and have started making noise. Odi egwu! cheesy

Oh, that is the new angle you want to start from? wink Murtala Mohammed came from....where? Dimka, Bisalla & co, who killed him hailed from ....where? A lot of Southerners saw it as a Northern coup, carried out by Northern minorities against core Northern chaps. Apart from that, the coup plotters and coup victims were all military men (i.e. military boys vs. military generals). And people tagged it as such, or how else would people have described it? It was quite different from the January 1966 coup, where military boys summarily executed elected civilian political leaders of other ethnic groups, who were unarmed except for one person. sad

Now, stop digressing. If the 1976 coup bothers you so much, start another thread for it, and we can open up discussions there. Do not derail this thread, biko.

Because it did not fit their agenda. It's not just that poster who's guilty of this; you rarely hear any Nigerians refer to that coup as the Plateau coup. They tried so hard to paint the first military coup as an Igbo coup because they needed an excuse to 'cut the Igbo to size'. Essentially, that coup and, by extension, the war, gave Nigerians a reason to 'blame' the Igbos for their misfortune as a nation. This enabled them to marginalise the Igbo with the support of the majority and if the Igbos complained, they would just claim that the "Igbos are trying to dominate again". It's a very worrying trend- the Nazis used the same tactics against the Jews.

Military boys who hailed from Northern minority communities, carried out a coup against their fellow military compatriots who hailed from the core north, which led most people to view it as a military affair. Nzeogwu and Ifeajuna were full-blooded Igbo men and you'd hardly see any Igbos denying that fact- I'm actually very proud of the former in particular.
