FVCKING FINALLY!!! SAN Announces preferred bidders for Biro, Damen Shipyards Cape Town comes away with the big prize - all IPV's/OPV's. Southern African Shipyards comes in second with the Hydro-graphic contract. Now its down to sorting out technical details and the contracts can be signed http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46826:damen-and-sa-shipyards-in-the-lead-to-build-new-navy-hulls&catid=111:sa-defence&Itemid=242 3 Likes |

Henry240: No, Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) is 51% owned by a local group which used to be called Farocean Marine, and 49% by the Damen Group. Paramount partnered with Navantia, the Spanish company. Incidentally, when Denel partnered with the Chinese, I told some people here that it didn't automatically mean they'd get the contract. Denel has lost many govt contracts before. Here's a graphic of the OPV bids. I'll post the IPVs if I can be bothered to look. 3 Likes

Oh dear . Kenyan Air Tractor sale hits turbulencehttp://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46825:kenyan-air-tractor-sale-hits-turbulence&catid=35:Aerospace&Itemid=107 In light of this, it would appear US taxpayers, not Kenyan, are paying for the Air Tractor?

frumentius: OK, thanks. The Damen bid was the clear winner. Why is the main Armarment a 20mm gun? Isn't that to small for the ships? Unfortunately, the paramount bid had no chance. The ships from Navantia are too slow, especially when compared to the opposition. Let's see the Infographic for the IPVs. That would be nice. You have any idea of the general length of the IPVs? |
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 1:46pm On Feb 16, 2017 |
Henry240: There's a question mark on that in the graphic. The gun is 76mm. My Navy colleague isn't here today, though I suspect I've got the IPV graphic somewhere. |

Henry240: I made this comment yesterday. So, here is my evidence. A Nigerian delegation visited Ocea in France in 2015 to check the status of 4 Nigerian IPVs due to be delivered according to Defenceweb in 2018. Ocea specializes in building aluminum IPVs and OPVs. When the IPVs are delivered, it would take the number of Nigerian Navy IPVs to 38 - 40. The Nigerian navy currently operates between 34-36 IPVs, including 3 units previously from Ocea. 1 Like

Henry240: Over on Defenceweb a Frenchman has tried to answer the question why these aren't being built in Nigeria: The shipbuilder that makes those patrol ships is specialised in aluminium construction. It is a bit of a different trade to steel shipbuilding, because the welding requires different techniques, machines and skills. This must explain why they aren't produced in Nigeria, where shipyards could definitely build ships this size. Let's hope the bolded sentence comes to pass. By the by, I wouldn't call a 24 metre and 35 metre patrol boat an IPV. |

frumentius: Nomenclature. From the photo I posted, they are clearly Aluminum made, we don't yet build aluminum based ship's in Nigeria. Hopefully he is right and we get to build those sorts of vessels in Nigeria. In Nigeria, we refer to boats that are 25 meters and above as Offshore Patrol Crafts. We don't have IPVs in our naval nomenclature. The ones built in Nigeria are referred to as Seaward Defence Boats, NNS Karaduwa is approximately 40 meters, Seaward Defence Boat III which is currently under construction is 50 meters, yet they are referred to as Seaward Defence Boats. |

For the IPV, DSCT initially offered this 51 metre FCS 5009. I'm told the final offering might have changed due to Navy misgivings about the size, on account of our rough waters.

**** it also seems the Nigerian Navy is interested in a Naval helicopter from Airbus helicopters. The Nigerian Navy might procure the Panther helicopter from France. This helicopter. I guess we would all wait and see. 3 Likes

frumentius: Yeah, I noticed, I saw a video made by the sailors aboard NNS Unity. It was shot in the waters off the Cape, the seas were so damn rough, it was crazy man. Watching from my screen, it was both scary and intense. The waves smashing against the ship violently. Mad I tell you. 1 Like |

jakeporeshenko: It's not mainstream source, the same place I sourced the Ocea photo from. It might be possible, that's why I'm saying we should wait and see. Me might or might not. It is my belief that we might. Let's wait and see. What I can say is that we are strongly interested and have tested the helicopter in Marsielle, France. That is, April, 2016. 1 Like |

ActivateKruger: Separate OPS, confrence and flight rooms, big hangar, flex-deck, davits, 13 000 km or 40 day range. However, unlike in these picks it seems from the Defweb article that ours will have the Axe-bow (straight edge), which is neato... Its a really nice package. Obviously we will have to wait and see what the final design is, but all in all it should be pretty hard to fvck it up. Hopefully they can complete the technical negotiations timorously.
