Please say it isn't so!

May God help Nigeria! If so, then we'll definitely need to beg Vince Enyeama to come out of retirement. We can't afford to have Akpeyi in goal any more. And I don't understand why they don't wanna invite Emmanuel Daniels either. He's far better than Akpeyi.

O pari

There will be time to find a replacement but let's just focus on praying for Carl.

Yeah.

That aside. The midfield combo of Muda Lawal and Henry Nwosu was difficult to break into for the most part of the early to mid 80s. Etim Esin got a couple of games between 1986-87. But Muda Lawal had retired then. Etim was a Central Midfielder Nwosu was more of an AM.

The way Kelechi Nwakali plays is similar to the way Etim played. Very skillful and comfortable on the ball with very good passing ability. Etim was part of the Chile U20 set. He was the most experienced of that crop, already playing for Gent of Belgium. But las-las Indiscipline finished him.

I shared Etim and Okoronwanta's stories with the Manu boys of 2013. (winks).
At least Ihenacho and Co would have learned at least one major lesson in football.

The only time I got to watch Etim Esin was when he played for Eagle Cement in Port Harcourt coached by Coach Monday Sinclair. Honestly, Kelechi Nwakali is not close to what I saw. There were repeated incidences where Etim Esin dribbled players and his teammates we falling.

Glad for your input to our young players. You guys were lucky to see greats like Etim Esin and Nwosu play.

Omo, we're talking about the mid-80s Naija families here. How many families can afford a VCR at that time ... not even sure that they do exist at that time sef. That's why I would lay all the blames squarely at the feet on the NFF (abi na NFA). Our football house ought to have archives and records department where the tapes of all our national team matches can be assessed.

I have even taken my crusade to the NTA Lagos sef, but I was told that they could barely afford VCR tapes in those days; hence, they tend to record over used video tapes. That's naija for you, right there!

O pari

I disagree. Those tapes are there. At least we are talking of Etim Esin who was from a middle-class family. There is no way Etim Esin does not have his old tapes. Tapes are gold to these players, especially when it comes to club hunting.

Haha haha. Of course Etim was a lot more skillful than Kelechi Nwakali. But he is the closest current generation CM I can compare him with.

At a point in
Okocha's early career a lot of people were of the opinion that Etim was better and hence there was the clamour for Etim to be given another chance.

Let me analyse the two of them. Etim was better than Okocha in terms of one on one encounter with opponents. But he usually does it the hard way. IE shaking off the player while putting the ball on the run in the form of what we used to call "show your number. but Okocha does it more easy with his trickery.

However Okocha's long passes or connecting plays were better than those of Etim. Something Okocha actually improved on over the years.

No coach wanted Etim again after he messed up his career.

On Henry Nwosu, he was a quick and very precise AM. Very skillful and with very fanciful foot-work. very comfortable on the ball and very direct in his plays. His major downside could be his height.

1988 AFCON final Nigeria Vs Cameroon full 90mins video is available on YouTube. There you'll see Henry Nwosu, Sam Okwaraji, Yisa Shofoluwe, Rasheed Yekini, Bright Omokaro, Stephen Keshi, Peter Rufai and others in full 90mins action . And on the Cameroonian side you'll see greats like Rodger Miller, Omam and Kana Biyik, Makanaki, Emmanuel Kunde, Emile Mbou Mbou and Co.

And for the young players, that is what we owe them. Guidance.

It's devastating to hear from the radio this evening that Carl Ikeme has been retired abruptly from football due to Acute Leukemia..

I pray for his quick recovery IJN.

As the search for safe hands is being unearthed by our goal keeper trainer,Alloy Agu who has finally seen the urgent need for one or two quality Gks.I know for sure that Akpeyi has played his last game for the Super Eagles as Rohr has stated that he ( Akpeyi) has failed to cover himself in glory.

1.I dont want to see Akpeyi near my darling team the Super Eagles.I have never seen a so called professional GK looking so jittery with zero confidence all my life.

2.I suggest that Enyeama be recalled to the team ASAP.

3.Any player who is not ready to sweat, break bone, bleed for 9 ja must stay away from the team.

4.Rohr assistants are lazy to work. You will soon understand what i mean.

5.Rohr is not working with the best.Coaches like Bamboye,Maikaba,Amunike should be the ones to work with him.

6.As we prepare for Chan, the best must be selected. It is sad to say that the best are not in the NPL but in academies and on the streets.

7.We need to invite new goalkeepers.Akpeyi and Ezenwa must be dropped.Plateau utd ( Ajiboye ) gk,Akwa United gk and Remo stars gk are better shot stoppers.

8.Over confidence is fast becoming a norm for our players.Who told them that Cameroun is a walkover.it looks as if they hv nt learnt from their defeat to S/A.

9.Our local champions should please excuse themselves from participating in Continental tourneys be it Caf confed etc.

10.Our sport governing body be it LMC,NFF,NRF,Shakeholder must go back to the drawing board and proffer solutions to move our sports forward.

11.We must go back to the grass root, unearth players, blend time with time bfr we get our ready products.see the success of Germany.

12.God fatherism,Juju,Nepotism,Bribery/Corruption must stop in every facet of our nations.Only the best must be selected inrespective of tribe, religion etc.

Other videos available on YouTube are:

Nigeria Vs Cameroon, 1984 AFCON final
Nigeria Vs Algeria, 1982 AFCON qualifiers.
Here you will get to see a lot of those 1980s players we have always discussed. They are mostly highlights though.

Nice one!!! I can disagree with a FEW omissions/additions, but like you said it's strictly your opinion. All the same, great contribution!!!

Icon4s:
4 Generations of the Green Eagles/Super Eagles from the 1980s to present.

This write up is aimed at selecting the best 11 from each of the generations of Eagles.

I have grouped the 4 generations into 4 different decades: 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s(present)

Taking our minds down Memory Lane a bit, some may have to cast our minds farther than others. But which ever generation you belong your team will be captured.

With the emergence of Enugu Rangers and IICC as formidable forces in the mid to late 70s both in Nigeria and Africa, Nigeria was able to produce a formidable team that finished 3rd at the 1978 AFCON and ended up with a crescendo by winning the 1980 AFCON (then called the African Cup of Unity). That was the birth of Nigeria's dominance of football in Africa.

From 1980 to 1989 this is my first 11:

Peter Rufai
Bright Omokaro
Christian Chukwu
Stephen Keshi
Yisa Shofoluwe
Muda Lawal
Henry Nwosu
Samuel Okwaraji
Segun Odegbami
Adokiye Amiesimaka
Rashidi Yekini

With the Green Eagles of Algiers 90 nations cup came a new era of Nigerian football. Some of the players in the team of the 80s had become the senior players of the team. This era saw us dominate football in Africa and at a time ranked 5th in the world, highest for any African team ever. Also winning the AFCON in 1994.

My first 11 from the 1990 to 1999:

Peter Rufai
Ben Iroha
Uche Okechukwu
Stephen Keshi
Augustine Eguavoen
Sunday Oliseh
Austin Okocha
Emmanuel Amuneke
Finidi George
Daniel Amokachi
Rashidi Yekini

With Nigeria producing so many quality youth players in the 1990s both at the U17 and U20. Including winning the Olympics in 1996 and a q/final showing in 2000. A new generation of Eagles emerged. Some others joined from the 2003 U17 and 2005 U20. Some of the players from the 90s had become senior players in the team.

My first 11 for 2000 to 2009:

Vincent Enyeama
Taye Taiwo
Joseph Yobo
Taribo West
Chidi Odiah
Garba Lawal
Austin Okocha
Osaze Odemwingie
Tijani Babangida
Nwankwo Kanu
Yakubu Ayegbeni

The 2010 WC saw the end of a good number of the players of the 2000s. Some retired even before then.
The super eagles would had to depend mostly on the players who featured at the 2003 U17, 2005 U20, 2007 U20, 2008 U23 and 2009 U17 to carry the team further. This culminated in the team wining the AFCON in 2013. Nigeria continued to turn out quality youth players from the 2011 U20, 2013 U20, 2013 U17, 2015 U20 and 2015 U17.

My first 11 from 2010 to date:

Vincent Enyeama
Elderson Echiejile
Kenneth Omeruo
Godfrey Obaobona
Efe Ambrose
Ogenyi Onazi
John Obi Mikel
Victor Moses
Ahmed Musa
Ikechukwu Uche
Emmanuel Emenike

These are strictly my opinion. You are free to criticize or agree on any generation. Who is on my side on this one?

I am so sad..... so very sad about Carl's condition. I only got the news yesterday but couldn't come online to comment.

I am devastated to hear this. Tears escaped my eyes because before anything else and even before being A Super Eagles player.... Carl is a human being. A wonderful one too.... He is a family man, A brother, A son, A father, A husband, An Uncle.... He is all these before being a Super Eagles star. Let us not forget that.

Carl.... my prayers are deeply with you. As your chemotherapy sessions kick off soon.... I pray you will make a super recovery and beat this cancer demon.

Cancer is one of the things I wanna eradicate from the world, I cannot wait to finish up my combined further medical studies and move into the leagues that will put me in the major front lines in this fight against all forms of cancer.

#CarlIStandWithYouBigMan It is well.....

Football Stars Show Support For Ikeme
By Johnny Edward

Football stars, including former Nigeria captain and current Lille goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama have paid tributes to Carl Ikeme after news broke on Thursday that the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper had been diagnosed with acute leukemia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com .

Leukaemia is cancer of the blood causing too many white blood cells to be produced and affecting the bone marrow.

Ikeme's return to action looks unlikely and the 31-year-old is understood to have taken the setback in good faith. He will begin chemotherapy immediately.

Former Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama, and his Wolves Nigerian-born teammate, Dominic Iorfa Jnr., were among the first set of footballers that wished Ikeme well on Thursday night, expressing regret at the news.

Ikeme's predecessor at the national team, Enyeama wrote via his Twitter handle @vinpee:

"God be with him @Carl_Ikeme @NGSuperEagles we pray for success and healing."

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender, Iorfa wrote:

"Wow lost for words. Stay strong big man and get well soon ".

Norwich City midfielder Matt Jarvis also wrote via his Twitter handle:

"Stay strong big man! Wishing you my best! @Carl_Ikeme."

Bolton Wanderers striker, Adam Le Fondre, also wrote: "Absolutely gutted to hear that @Carl_Ikeme has leukaemia one of footballs top guys! My thoughts are with you an your family!!"

Pinnick , NFF Shocked , Back Ikeme To Recover From Leukaemia

The Nigeria Football Federation and their President Amaju Pinnick have expressed shock at Carl Ikeme’s acute leukaemia diagnosis but have backed the Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper to fully recover from the illness, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Ikeme’s club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday announced that the goalkeeper, 31, was diagnosed with leukaemia, a form of cancer of the blood.

“The Nigerian football fraternity and indeed the world, pray for @Carl_Ikeme as he faces this tough but not impossible journey. We believe,” Pinnick wrote in a first of a series of tweets on Thursday.

“We believe this strength will see @Carl_Ikeme through. Stay strong @Carl_Ikeme and have faith. You will beat this like a champion.

“As devastating as this is, we also know @Carl_Ikeme possesses the fighting spirit associated with Nigerians. We are behind Carl completely.”

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, in his reaction was quoted in a statement released by the governing body:

“What? This is very, very sad. Carl Ikeme diagnosed with acute leukemia? This is harsh.

“Our thoughts are with Carl at this difficult period. The NFF and the football fraternity in Nigeria are taken aback by this sad development, knowing how strong Carl has been in goal for Nigeria since he made his debut in 2015.

“We have been told that he will start chemotherapy immediately. We want him to stay strong and remain the self-assured man that he has always been, and we will continue to pray for him and wish him the best with regards to the treatment.”

Ikeme took over as Nigeria’s No.1 following the sudden retirement of three-time World Cup star Vincent Enyeama from international football in October 2015.

Ikeme was in goal for the Super Eagles over two legs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup preliminary round against Swaziland, as well as the 2-1 defeat of Zambia in Ndola at the beginning of the group phase of the 2018 FIFA World Cup race.

He was also in action against Tanzania and Egypt in 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, and in friendly games against Mali and Luxembourg in Europe last year.

He however missed the final games of last season for both club and country due to injury.

I hope Mahrez can stay to forge a wicked attack line with Nacho and Vardy if this Nacho to Leicester deal pulls through.... but if not... then Arsenal will get Mahrez and Leicester will have to get a player to play that Mahrez role on the right.... anyhow things go... we are watching.... #NachoToLeicester?

Meanwhile, our prayers remain with Carl Ikeme.... you will pull through this Big Guy. Godspeed.

Man City Iheanacho Set For Leicester City Medical On Saturday Ahead Of £29m Move

Manchester City and Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho will in the next 72 hours undergo a medical at Leicester City after a fee which could potentially rise to £29m was agreed for his transfer.

The 20 year old have already agreed personal terms on a five year deal which will see him earn twice his current pay at Man City, hence making him the highest earning Nigerian player in Europe.

Iheanacho is expected to bid farewell to his City team-mates this weekend, bringing to an end an unhappy one year spell at the Etihad under coach Pep Guardiola after his breakthrough two seasons ago.

As exclusively reported by this portal, the forward has been promised a new role by Leicester City coach Craig Shakespeare, who plans to play the forward in his favourite position behind the main striker.

His imminent move to Leicester City will bring the number of Nigerian players at the club to three with Wilfred Ndidi who joined the team in January, and Ahmed Musa who joined them last summer completing the list.

Kelechi Iheanacho close to joining Leicester City

The highly talented Manchester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho is closing in on a move to Leicester City this summer.

According to The BBC , the Nigerian is likely to cost the Foxes around £25m. Iheanacho is in advanced talks with Craig Shakespeare’s side right now and the move is expected to be finalised soon.

The 20-year-old forward made his first-team debut in 2015 and has scored 21 goals for Manchester City in all competitions since then.

Iheanacho was already behind Aguero in the pecking order but the arrival of Gabriel Jesus in January has really damaged his first team chances. The Nigerian will now look to resurrect his career with a move to the King Power Stadium.

Iheanacho’s pace and finishing ability should make him an ideal partner for Jamie Vardy next season. The Nigerian is a prodigious talent and could prove to be a sensational signing for the Foxes in the long run.

The highly talented forward has a contract at Etihad until 2021 and City will have wanted to hold on to him. However, it is clear that Guardiola cannot provide him with the necessary first team assurances.

At this stage of his career, Iheanacho needs to play regular first team football and a move to Leicester City makes perfect sense.

Agent- Troost-Ekong To Bursaspor Is Done, Rohr Approved His Move To Turkey

The agent of Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong says the defender will have his medicals with Turkish side Bursaspor after a fee was agreed for his transfer from Belgium side Gent.
Tonny Harris told George Akapyen of Supersports.com that a fee for the transfer of Ekong was agreed yesterday between Gent and Bursaspor and the defender will sign a three year deal with the Turkish outfit as first reported by this portal.

“Ekong will be leaving Gent. He will be going to Bursaspor in Turkey after a deal was agreed between the two clubs in the last few minutes,” Harris told supersport.com.

Troost-Ekong had a chat with the head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr on the the possibility of moving to the Turkish outfit before his decision to join the team.

It was gathered that although Rohr would have preferred him to move to a more competitive league in Europe, the manager backed his move to Turkey as he wasn’t having regular run of games at Gent.
