West Ham fans vent anger after transfer decision – ‘We are a shambles’

By Gareth McKnight - July 7, 2017

West Ham United have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho this summer, giving Leicester City the impetus to close in on a deal to sign the Nigerian forward.

The young attacker has been linked with a move to the London Stadium over the last number of weeks, with the Hammers in dire need of attacking recruits before next season.

However, it has been widely reported that West Ham have ended their supposed interest in Iheanacho and will focus on other targets in their attempts to add firepower to Slaven Bilic’s squad.

West Ham have been trying to land a number nine of note for the last 12 months and failed in attempts to sign the likes of Carlos Bacca, Michy Batshuayi and Alexandre Lacazette last summer.

The loan additions of Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri were failed experiments, while Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho could not be depended on last term due to consistent injuries.

At first sight Iheanacho seemed like an ideal potential signing for West Ham, with the City striker showing that he can score goals in the Premier League when given a chance to play.

The Nigerian’s pace, ability on the ball and cool finishing means that there will be no shortage of suitors for him this summer – but the Hammers have seemingly decided not be one of them.

The Irons have been linked with a host of other attackers in the last month, with names such as Olivier Giroud, Javier Hernandez, Cedric Bakambu, Anthony Modeste and Andre Gray all touted as options.

However, the West Ham fans were quick to take to Twitter after the latest development regarding Iheanacho, with the majority livid that their club were ready to let the City starlet join Leicester – here are the best tweets.

@Bilic Iheanacho is bettah than Gray

— Guto Gwenallt (@GutoG_WHU) July 6, 2017

@JacobSteinberg What are your thoughts on the transfer situation at WHU? Missing out on Iheanacho seems criminally shoddy. Massive error.

Bilic must be pretty confident in us signing Giroud then if he doesnt want Iheanacho as he thinks hes "unproven"

Lets hope that is the case

Pinnick , NFF Shocked , Back Ikeme To Recover From Leukaemia

The Nigeria Football Federation and their President Amaju Pinnick have expressed shock at Carl Ikeme’s acute leukaemia diagnosis but have backed the Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper to fully recover from the illness, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Ikeme’s club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday announced that the goalkeeper, 31, was diagnosed with leukaemia, a form of cancer of the blood.

“The Nigerian football fraternity and indeed the world, pray for @Carl_Ikeme as he faces this tough but not impossible journey. We believe,” Pinnick wrote in a first of a series of tweets on Thursday.

“We believe this strength will see @Carl_Ikeme through. Stay strong @Carl_Ikeme and have faith. You will beat this like a champion.

“As devastating as this is, we also know @Carl_Ikeme possesses the fighting spirit associated with Nigerians. We are behind Carl completely.”

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, in his reaction was quoted in a statement released by the governing body:

“What? This is very, very sad. Carl Ikeme diagnosed with acute leukemia? This is harsh.

“Our thoughts are with Carl at this difficult period. The NFF and the football fraternity in Nigeria are taken aback by this sad development, knowing how strong Carl has been in goal for Nigeria since he made his debut in 2015.

“We have been told that he will start chemotherapy immediately. We want him to stay strong and remain the self-assured man that he has always been, and we will continue to pray for him and wish him the best with regards to the treatment.”

Ikeme took over as Nigeria’s No.1 following the sudden retirement of three-time World Cup star Vincent Enyeama from international football in October 2015.

Ikeme was in goal for the Super Eagles over two legs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup preliminary round against Swaziland, as well as the 2-1 defeat of Zambia in Ndola at the beginning of the group phase of the 2018 FIFA World Cup race.

He was also in action against Tanzania and Egypt in 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches, and in friendly games against Mali and Luxembourg in Europe last year.

He however missed the final games of last season for both club and country due to injury.

I think Sikiru's was a great team effort mixed with great technique but Shedrack's goal reminded me of Zidane or at least James in Brazil.

Sivasspor sign Nigeria's Elderson Echiejile

KweséESPN Reporter

Sivasspor have completed the signing of Nigeria international Elderson Echiejile, who joins the Super Lig side on a one-year loan deal from AS Monaco.

The left-back spent last season on loan at Standard Liege and Sporting Gijon, but struggled to make an impact at either club and has again been deemed surplus to requirements at Monaco.

Despite the transfer speculation surrounding the futures of the Ligue 1 champions' full-backs Benjamin Mendy and Djibril Sidibe, coach Leonardo Jardim has opted to offload Echiejile, with the Turkish side confirming the move on their official Twitter handle.

"New beginnings," he wrote on his @eldersonech handle. "Happy to be part of the team."

The 29-year-old began his senior career with Bendel Insurance in his home town before moving to Stade Rennais in 2007.

He subsequently moved onto Portuguese side SC Braga, where he won the Taca da Liga in 2013, and was signed by Monaco in 2014.

The wideman was part of the Nigeria side that won the African Cup of Nations in 2013, but missed out on the World Cup a year later after suffering an injury in a pre-tournament friendly against Greece.

Bursaspor confirm William Troost-Ekong deal
By Colin Udoh, KweséESPN

Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong has joined Bursaspor on a three-year contract after passing a medical on Saturday morning.

Troost-Ekong, 23, joins the Turkish club from KAA Gent in a €2 million deal, and told KweséESPN why he made the move.

"I came here because Bursaspor is a very big club with ambition and a good coach Paul Le Guen," the centre-back began. "I am here to play and help the team.

"The Turkish Super Lig is strong and I think it is what I need to keep developing."

Very happy with my new club @bursaspor #GloryToGod pic.twitter.com/yqxKTtWkpq
- William Troost-Ekong (@wtroostekong) July 8, 2017

The Nigeria defender joined the Belgian club from Dutch side Groningen in 2015, but was loaned out to Norway's Haugesund and only returned to Belgium last November to help the club to a fourth-place finish and Europa League qualification.

Troost-Ekong, who has emerged a key component of Gernot Rohr's new young Nigeria side, says his focus now is to continue his development and help his new club achieve greater things.

"I want to have a better season here than they did last year and to help the team back to the top," he continued, "and to keep developing with the view to the World Cup in 2018."

The defender has taken the number 93 jersey at his new club, "because I was born in 1993," he explained.

Watford, QPR, Hull Target Onyedinma Agrees New Deal With Millwall

Lagos-born Nigerian midfielder Fred Onyedinma has ended speculation about his future after agreeing a new contract with newly-promoted Championship outfit Millwall.

The South London Press is reporting that Onyedinma will remain at The Den after all, and might feature in Saturday afternoon's pre-season friendly against Dartford at Princes Park.

The 20-year-old ran out of contract at the end of last season and had been offered fresh terms by Millwall.

And despite the fact that he had not appended his signature to the new deal, he showed his commitment to the club after reporting for pre-season training.

Previously, Onyedinma was on the radar of Hull City, Queens Park Rangers and Watford.

Chelsea Young Star Aina : Replacing Victor Moses Was Highlight Of My Season

Interviewed by the official website of Chelsea as part of its review of last season, former England U19 skipper Ola Aina has acknowledged that making his Premier League debut was the highlight of his season.
The Super Eagles hopeful finally made his Premier League bow when he replaced compatriot Victor Moses in the 82 minute of the clash between The Blues and Leicester City at Stamford Bridge on October 15, 2016.

Before Aina got his first taste of action in the English top-flight, he was a non-playing substitute against West Ham, Watford, Burnley and Liverpool.

''Making my Premier League debut against Leicester was a huge moment for me personally,'' Ola Aina said.

''I came on for Victor with about 10 minutes to go and we won the game 3-0, which was great. It’s a day I’ll always remember.''

Aina recorded three appearances in total for Chelsea in the league last term, having come off the bench against Bournemouth (December 26) and Watford (May 15).

He Won’t Play As Top Striker: Coach Hints At New Role For Everton Loanee Onyekuru

Coach of Belgian side Anderlecht has revealed that Everton loanee Henry Onyekuru won’t be given the role as the main striker of his team due to the presence of the top scorer for the club last season.
A delighted Rene Weiler praised the club for capturing Onyekuru on loan, but also speak about some areas the 20 year old need to improve in his game.

” Onyekuru is only 20. He has to learn a lot especially in the defensive field. But he is vary dangerous in the offensive part and scores easily when defenders make mistakes. Now he has to take the next step”, he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

Despite praising his finishing abilities the coach however revealed he won’t play the Nigerian as his main striker as he feels he won’t work well with the top scorer of the club for last season Lukasz Teodorczyk.

” Putting him next to Teo won’t be a good idea. They would take space away from each other. I prefer to leave room from midfielders coming into the box, that’s why Pieter Gerkens is one of my joker”.

TER STEGEN SENDS HEARTFELT MESSAGE TO WOLVES GOALKEEPER IKEME
By Joe Wright

The Barcelona goalkeeper has wished "all the strength in the world" to his counterpart as he begins his cancer battle

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has sent a heartfelt message of support to Carl Ikeme of Wolves, who has been diagnosed with cancer.
Arsenal fear Alexis will push for Man City move
The Championship club confirmed on Thursday that the Nigeria international has leukaemia and will begin an immediate course of chemotherapy.

A number of social media posts wishing Ikeme well have been sent from across the footballing world, with Manchester United's David de Gea and former Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas among the latest to send their support.

Ter Stegen took to his official Facebook page on Friday to encourage people not to take their health for granted and wish Ikeme "all the strength in the world" in his recovery.

He wrote:

"Today I read the story about Carl Ikeme, a goalkeeper for Nigeria and Wolverhampton, who's been diagnosed with acute leukemia [sic]. A person I've never met but his story affects me and touches my heart.

"I can't underline how important health is. In sport, it means a lot for every athlete; and it's not just crucial so that we perform well but our health does affect us mentally also. I try to be in the best possible shape, remembering to follow my diet and regularly check up on my health status. I think about this all time. I would never want to see a player get injured, especially when it's serious. I know the feeling and it's the worst.
"But more alarming than an injury, is having to stop what you love because of your health. It's complicated to understand and a painful reality to relax. And when the cause is cancer. I am speechless. I don't know what to say.

"I wish Carl and his family all the strength in the world. I'm sure his team-mates and club will be there too, and all their fans. It's important to be united! And me too, I offer all my possible support. I'm hoping he can fight like goalkeepers always do, with a calm and positive mind.

"I believe in you, Carl. Be strong. Be brave."
