MtuMsuper: In Nigeria’s Afro-centric foreign policy, the West African Sub-region remains the first line of implementation. Given the vast size, natural, economic and human resources, large market drive, Nigeria perceives itself as having an historic mission to exercise hegemonic influence in the West African Sub-region and indeed, the black world. Her economic strength and the high level of human resources at her disposal have allowed her a measure of autonomy in the pursuit of Africa’s genuine interests in global politics. This can be seen in her role in the Organization for African Unity, which later metamorphosised into the African Union (AU), other sub regional groupings such as Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Chad Basin Commission and Commonwealth of Nations. The role that Nigeria has played in various international organizations over the years has been proactive, especially in the AU. Nigeria has vigorously articulated and consistently defended African concerns and interests as a member of various international organizations. She has used this platform to champion the interests of Africa in the true spirit of Pan- Africanism. That is why in recognition of her struggles and contribution to the elimination of colonialism, apartheid and racism she was categorized as a “Frontline State”. In line with her leading role in the AU and ECOWAS, Nigeria has been supportive of these organizations in the area of conflict resolution. The framework for this has been provided in Article III of the Charter which commits the AU to peaceful settlement of disputes by negotiation, mediation, conciliation or arbitration. Nigeria’s participation in peace keeping efforts is a manifestation of its concern and regard for the need to give priority and clear expression to the value of the bond which forms part of history of all Africans, particularly those who inhabit the West Coast of the continent. Nigeria had the largest contingent in the ECOMOG peace keeping force, committing huge human and financial resources to the activities of the force. Nigeria continuously plays crucial mediatory roles in crisis situations among African countries and the rest of the international community. Her contributions towards peace and stability in Africa are unparalleled. Specifically, she has participated in peace keeping operations in the Chad, Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Cote d’ Ivoire, Somalia and Darfur in Sudan, to mention a few. Among the immediate challenges facing Nigeria as a leading country in the African continent, is resolving the many conflicts raging on the continent. Nigeria and indeed the entire West African region have devoted considerable human, material, political and diplomatic resources to the resolution of the crises in the sub-region, starting far back with Liberia and then to Chad, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Angola and more recently the Darfur crisis, to mention a few. Within the West African Sub region, successive administrations in Nigeria have ensured the promotion of cooperation with other African nations in all fields of human endeavour through economic exchanges and regional integration of members. This has been achieved through deployment of more Technical Aide Corps (TAC) volunteers whose services have been in high demand by other countries to assist in the areas of their manpower needs. In specific terms, there have been considerable integration through sharing Nigeria’s know-how and expertise with other African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries; Promotion of integrated infrastructure in the West African sub-region; Establishment of the ECOWAS free trade area; Promotion of sub regional (ECOWAS) Economic integration; Establishment of the Ministry of Cooperation and Integration (which was later subsumed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs); Establishment of the Second West African Monetary Zone; Complete eradication of all rigid border formalities; Adoption of a common ECOWAS Passport; Establishment of ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (TLS); Establishment of the ECOWAS Court of Justice; and Promotion of sub regional peace and security initiatives. Lol Abuja —Kenya’s former anti-corruption czar, Patrick Lumumba, yesterday held Nigeria responsible for underdevelopment of Africa through its poverty caused by graft in public service. Consequently, he called for total support for the anti-corruption war of President Muhammadu Buhari, so Nigeria can take its place in the comity of nations. Lumumba, who spoke at the seminar, entitled The role of the legislature in the fight against corruption in Nigeria , organised by the anti-corruption committees of the Senate and House of Representatives in Abuja, said for Nigeria and by extension, Africa, to develop, Nigerian leaders must be ready to battle the cankerworm. “Africa is behind because Nigeria has not released her potential. It’s time the leaders rose because one in every five Africans is a Nigerian,’’ said Lumumba in his keynote address. Lumumba, a professor of law, described Nigeria as a microcosm of Africa and, as such, could not afford to get things wrong. He stressed the need to enthrone behavioural change culture in Nigeria, adding that the country must put in place stringent mechanism that would effectively checkmate corruption. He said: ‘’The three arms of government must strengthen and not undermine the institutions that are meant to fight corruption so that Nigeria can realise its potential. “People must be made to know that if you reap where you have not sown, there are consequences. Men only change their behaviours when there is a threat pain. “Institutions are the heart of the fight against corruption but he (Buhari) will not succeed if the legislature is not behind him and the institutions are not strengthened, because only institutions defy time and outlive those that live on graft.’’ Earlier in his opening remarks, Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said Nigeria had faile to seriously fight corruption for more than 40 years. According to him, the National Assembly will partner with the Federal Government for lasting solutions to the problem. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/africa-poor-nigeria-says-kenyas-ex-anti-corruption-chief/ |

MtuMsuper: Excellent analysis! Observe : London – A London leading retailer shop, Debenhams, has adopted Hausa, a language spoken by nearly 45 million people in West Africa including Nigeria, to woo customers as race for summer sales starts. The retailer had placed a bold sign reading: “Na gode don sayayyarka a Debenhams’’ in Hausa meaning, “Thank you for shopping at Debenhams’’ at the entrance of its Oxford street Branch in London.Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/05/london-leading-retailer-shop-adopts-hausa-language-to-woo-customers/ More proof everything we've told you is true! kikuyu1:Nigeria also have a very large middle class larger than Kenya, but you are right, the majority do not belong to that group but no matter how poor Nigeria is, you do not easily find homeless people or those in famine. Kenya has had no real war with large refugee spill out, but sometimes we hear of famine in Kenya for a population of 40 million. Also inequality a disease in Nigeria is all over the world, worse in SA l believe. |

kikuyu1:It reflects the popularity of hausa. If the store had used swahili, would you have had a problem with that? And yet kenya is far rated as more corrupt than Nigeria. Also Nigeria has a larger middle class than kenya even with your small population.I think you should face your problems in that country of yours and hold your leaders for more accountability. If you need a kokoboko to beat them with,I can help you with that. 2 Likes |

Shaytun:The speech of this Kenya anti corruption czar has vindicated us of all what we Nigerians have been saying on this thread. From the bolded this are the key take home 1, Nigeria is the key to unlock Africa development 2, Nigeria is role model to every other Africa countries 3, Other Africa countries look up to us to take the lead as we are the giant of Africa 4, Africa is behind because Nigeria( the giant of Africa) has not released her potential. 5, The man Seems to be idolising Bubu, 6, For Nigeria and by extension, Africa, to develop, Nigerian leaders must fight corruption. 7, Lumumba, a professor of law, described Nigeria as a microcosm of Africa and, as such, could not afford to get things wrong 1 Like |

Daejoyoung: Actually,no. This is a recent commentary on the true state of your middle class from a Naijjan: Regrettably, many working class Nigerians cannot meet their financial obligations due to the present recession that has affected and changed the lifestyle and spending patterns of this particular set of individuals.http://www.businessdayonline.com/nigerias-waning-middle-class/ As I've mentioned severally consumption data is key to all economic data. If on paper your GDP reads like RSA yet your per capita consumption, oil, sugar, cement, kwhrs read like Uganda or Lesotho you can throw away ALL YOUR OFFICIAL STATS! Look: Consumption was also once useful in defining the class but that is no longer tenable, as the economy obviously is playing a different tune. People who thought they were economically stable are now finding themselves, even poorer. |

The problem isn't just intellectual but obviously emotional explaining the hysterical denial and refusal to confront the truth. Here's a wonderful write up on this coping mechanism by a Naijjan. During a recent trip spent travelling across Nigeria, a banker friend of mine advised me to “keep things positive” if I ever shared my observations in “western media”. I pointed out Nigeria is currently in dire economic straits; many civil servants haven’t received a salary this year, pensions are going unpaid, people are struggling to feed their families and children are actually starving to death in the country’s north-east. “Writing about it won’t help those people. And you know negative western media stories on Africa only make these white folk and others look down on us,” my friend replied. Ohttp://roape.net/2016/10/14/nigerias-chattering-classes-poverty-denial-africa/ Its a short read packed with facts many of us struggle to reveal here like this: For instance, 62.6% of Nigerians currently live in poverty, compared to 27.2% in 1980. Yet for some Nigerians, “balanced media coverage” amounts to talking up the latest individual success story as evidence “not all Africans are poor and suffering” and that the country is “making progress”..... Jonathan’s ludicrous response aptly illustrates the prevalent attitude within the privileged classes. It is a combination of denial bordering on the delusional coupled with a post-colonial complex – emotional responses which attempt to shout down unpleasant statistics and imply that whenever the western world talks of African poverty, the aim is to paint the continent in a bad light. My personal favourite! ... A recent favourite is to question the veracity of poverty statistics on Africa. I’ve had heated debates with well-educated Africans who, when confronted with the unflattering numbers, reply: “But how exactly did they come about those statistics? Why is the poverty line calculated in dollars and not in local currencies?” HOW MANY TIMES HAVE NAIJJANS HERE THROWN OUT THAT LINE!? Btw,nothing personal but before replying pls read the whole thing-twice. 1 Like |
