Proforce will do well do redesign the grille guard to cover the gaps on the edges.

Apparently it's a carryover from the old generation of the Hilux they use as a platform.
I guess it's a practical vehicle which is fine, but i really don't like the design.

I was hoping it will be totally re-designed to give it some sort of commando look.

Yes, it is a carryover, they only really worked a few features, tires and a couple other areas.

hello experts in the house

I'm not an expert, just don't want to see you hanging. I would say anything below a 44 (sorry 0.44 caliber) most well designed vests could stop. I'm talking "normal" vests without extra heavy plating that a typical policeman may use. Why? Are you planning on getting shot?

But ballistics isn't an exact science. Some people have been killed by rounds their vests were meant to stop and vice versa.

South Africa (civilian):

1) SunSat (AMSAT designation SO-35), miniaturised satellite launched in 1999 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in the US;
2) SumbandilaSat (AMSAT designation SO-67), launched in 2009 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan;
3) ZACUBE1, a nano-satellite developed by the Cape Peninsula University of Tech launched in 2013 from the Yasny launch base in Russia;
4) ZA-Aerosat and 'nSight1', both nano-satellites launched in April 2017 from Cape Canaveral in the US.

The CSIR is currently looking into a constellation of about 20-30 CubeSats for military applications.

Ghana: GhanaSat-1, a CubeSat launched in June 2017 from Kennedy Space Centre in the US.

Let's not forget the one launched by SpaceX a few days back for an unnamed government codename Zuma grin

NASASpaceflight.com has confirmed that Northrop Grumman is the payload provider for Zuma through a commercial launch contract with SpaceX for a LEO satellite with a mission type labeled as “ government ” and a needed launch date range of 1-30 November 2017.)

Just because the owner of SpaceX is a South African doesn't mean there's a correlation between SA-sounding codenames and the SA government. grin grin grin
GhanaSat-1 and the other Japanese funded CubeSats launched at the same time was via the first re-usable SpaceX craft, btw.

I'm more excited by the CSIR's CubeSats constellation of 30 nanosats for military use than the larger conventional satellites on which the SA Space Agency is working, to be honest.
$300K to build one and $40K to be launched as a secondary payload, able to provide continuous 1.5m resolution satellite imagery of the operational theatre, down-linking the images directly to soldiers on the ground who would even be able to task the satellites directly from the ground, it'll be a game-changer for the SANDF.

Come on, how obvious do you want it to get . Zuma + government, he's not even hiding it. Zuma needs it up as soon as yesterday. He needs to monitor all his Nkandla cows from space while in exile. grin

Considering Atlas (now Denel Aviation) pulled off this one in the early 90's, is it possible we could actually design our own helicopter again using existing rotors on the market?

Shall we wait and see what they come up with for Rooivalk MK2? Rumour has it Iran is keen on funding it... cool
Now that Airbus got UNSC approval to sell plane parts to Iran and finally dropped its ludicrous condition not to supply 3rd parties with parts where the Rooivalk competes with their products (they're desperate to get us to buy C-295s and A400Ms). grin grin grin

Saw some renders of a helicopter that almost looks like a Rooivalk with refined nose and cockpit glasses (I don’t know what it's called). Oh well, not sure where to find it on the web because I didn't take it serious.

I say let's use the Russian engines, forget the Europeans.. You have to suck too much c#ck for their components and Iran would refuse to have a machine they're funding to have EU/US parts. Not a good idea.

Most likely the Rooivalk Lite that ATE - now a division of Paramount - proposed. A direct competitor to the Airbus Tiger, Mangusta/TAI-129 etc, and not really in the heavy-weight category of dedicated attack helicopter. Never going to see the light of day, as the quid pro quo for Airbus committing to support Rooivalk MK2 was that we never play in the light-weight category.

A camera up in space that can zoom to any location (it's currently facing) on Earth in clarify of a metre on the ground.

To make it simpler for you, the DoD can literally compile high resolution images of military installations including sensitive ones on any country right now including yours (if the satellite passes there). So we'd know if you guys already have an JF17, for those moments it passes over your territory the boys could monitor tactical ground formations while drinking coffee in Pretoria.

* To add, the Kondor-E has a built-in radar that can monitor foreign airspace then synchronise with the Link-ZA. We could coordinate SAAF strike abilities on any foreign territory without actually turning the Gripen radar.

Are you happy with the explanation?
Lols this guy.
I wonder if you are trying to explain to me or to yourself that that satellite is just a simple earth monitoring satellite with secondary communication capabilities? Why do peeps on here like blowing things out of proportion. Some nation including mine have dedicated satellites for communication both civil and military. A Nigerian satelite provided the first pictures of Hurricane Katrina disaster within the coast of the USA, one of the most Technically advanced nation in cyber warfare and till today no Nigerians have ever screamed spy satellite. But let somebody launch an Arduino powered jukebox into space from the south and you will see peeps talking about spy satellites, links, extra terrestrial alliances and the most horrifying of all World domination delivered from the seats of a remotely piloted gripen. grin

The list just got longer when some smart kids and scientists from a federal university of technology launched a cubesat early this year. I saw how you ommitted it even though it was launched at the same time with the Ghanaian satellite.

Airbus has just committed itself to a long-term relationship with Iran, in the civilian air space. And regardless of Drumpf's bloviating, there will be no unilateral repudiation of the Nuclear Deal. The EU will see it through because they stand to make a fair bit of wonga.
As I understand it, none of the P5 + Germany & the EU - signatories to the Deal, can sell offensive weapons to Iran till 2025. The recent delivery of the Russian S-300 is an exception as it predates the current round of sanctions. So that leaves the field open to the likes of Denel, Brazilian arms companies and maybe Turkish(?).

Hence our pending application to the UNSC to supply Iran with the Umkhonto GBADS. From what I understand, the Iranians have made it clear that if SA pulls off the diplomatic gymnastics to get the Umkhonto deal approved by the UNSC, then Rooivalk MK2 research funding, and a substantial order of over 60 aircraft manufactured in both countries, shall follow.

Three suspected robbers were Saturday shot dead following a five-hour siege on a residential apartment at Kenol trading centre in Murang’a county.
During the shootout that brought business at the Kenol trading centre to a standstill, two firearms belonging to the Kenya Police Service – a Ceska pistol and an AK-47 rifle – and seven rounds of ammunition were recovered.
The pistol is believed to have been one of two that were stolen from two police officers who were shot dead in Nairobi’s sprawling Kayole estate after identification documents from one of the slain officers were found with the suspects.
Among the documents found was a letter of appointment of one of the officers.
ROBBERS
The AK-47, according to police, was the same one that was stolen from the two officers who were shot dead in Kibichoi in Kiambu County earlier.
Police said the robbers had been on their watch list for several weeks and it was not until Saturday that they cornered them hiding in a six storey building at Kenol suburbs at around 10 am.
Police had been trailing them since the shooting of the police officers.

“When they spotted the officers approaching, they opened fire from the top floor. This prevented the officers from accessing the building,” Murang’a County Commander Naomi Ichami said.
A shootout ensued and went on for hours as the officers sought support from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers.
HOSTAGE
More officers from the Flying Squad based in Murang’a were deployed to the area at around midday but could also not access the building as the criminals held a family hostage in one of the rooms.
“It took us a very long time (to fell them) since they had held a young family of a father, mother and their young child hostage and were using it as a human shield, making it difficult for us to shoot them dead,” said the police commander.
It was not until five hours later that officers from the highly trained General Service Unit’s Recce Squad from Ruaraka in Nairobi were dispatched to end the siege that had proved difficult for more than 70 officers who had surrounded the building.
RECCE SQUAD
Scared residents watched from afar, occasionally running for cover, as the gunfire exchange intensified.
Barely 30 minutes after the Recce Squad officers arrived, the siege came to a halt with the three men being shot dead.
The shaken family, a man his wife and a toddler, who had been held hostage, were rescued from the robbers.
The County Commander said the family would be taken through counselling as they might have suffered shock from the incident.
HIDEOUT
“The family is safe but they will be taken through counselling. They are quite shaken,” she said.
Initial findings suggest the gang had been using the building as its hideout and armoury, taking advantage of the elevated floor to spot any officers approaching.
Other suspects linked to the three, according to police, are still being trailed for the killing of the officers.
“We know there other criminals out there and we are coming for you,” said the police boss.
Police claim the suspects, aged between 18 and 25 years, were also linked to a series of armed robberies in Kiambu County.

The only thing worthwhile in that article are the technical specs. Everything else is junk.
But then, what to expect from an article mostly based on the musings of an opposition politician whose own party moved him from the defence portfolio?

My own personal view is that the satellite was completely un-needed at that time. We should rather have used those funds to first acquire assets that enable us to fully utilise similar imagery available from entities like Airbus which the SANDF still utilises btw. Things like maritime patrol aircraft and OPVs.
I've said it before here that Defence Intelligence - which operates Kondor - has become a law unto themselves, operating with minimal oversight and accountability.

*[s]On a positive note, the Chinese fishing armada that was caught by the SA Navy a year ago raping our seas was thanks to the satellite imagery from our Kondor-E.[/s]

*Correction: even though DI had the imagery, they did not share it. It was actually the CSIR's SeaFar that the Navy used.

Whats up with DI?

I remember reading that the situation with them was so bad that during the whole Kondor-E episode, and subsequent leaks, one of our other agencies was spying on DI and DI on them in return!

What the actual fvck is going on with them?

And who is it that keeps giving them money over everyone else?

Surely DI should be limited ridiculously boring stuff like signals intercepts, counter-espionage and counting skidmarks on Angolan runways to work out aircraft serviceability? How come their drone needs got bumped up above those of the SAAF or even SAN? Howcome they get a sat over everyone else?

Because, logically, if we were to get a purely "spy" satellite - it would be shared by the entire intelligence cluster (NIA, SASS and SANAI) and be managed by Comsec?
