A total of 238 students of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun, on Friday graduated with first class honours’ degrees at the institution’s 2017/2018 Convocation.
The institution’s Vice-Chancellor (V-C), Prof. Aaron Atayero, disclosed this during the university’s 13th Convocation, the Conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees and presentation of prizes to its deserving students in Ota.

The News of Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the university graduated 1,887 students for 2017/2018 Academic Session. They comprised: 238 first class honours, 746 second class upper honours, 452 second class lower, 86 third class and 365 post-graduate students.

NAN reports that Miss Salami Toluwani, from the Department of Industrial Chemistry, College of Sciences emerged the best student with a Cumulative Grade Point of Average (CGPA) of 4.99.

Atayero said that the graduates were not trained to seek but to provide employment and where they get employed, they should distinguish themselves as attested to by employers’ of labour.

“All over the world, our graduates are always breaking the grounds in many human endeavours,” he said.
Atayero attributed the success and milestone achieved by the institution to the high quality of its teaching linked with high quality research.

He implored the graduating students to deploy all what they had been through in solving the nation’s problems: leadership, unemployment, poverty, wanton killings, infrastructural deficit and poor health services.
Also speaking, Dr David Oyedepo, the Chancellor of the university, said there was the need to redefine democracy in the country so as to surmount its challenges.

He noted that leadership was not just about talking but taking the lead. Oyedepo said that leadership was not an endowment, but a product of outstanding accomplishments.

He said that the vision of the institution was to raise a new generation of leaders in every area of human endeavour, which would engender great changes in Nigeria, African and the world at large.

“I implore you all to start thinking about changing and start thinking of solutions to challenges confronting the nation,” he said.

Oyedepo advised the graduating students to imbibe and uphold the core values of the institution.

In a keynote address, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, the Chairman, First Bank of Nigeria PLC., advised the graduating students to identify every problem as an opportunity to proffer solutions to them, especially, those confronting the country.

Awosika said that the graduates had better opportunities because they had real value of education from a good university that impacted quality education on them.

“Challenges do not destroy vision but they empowered vision,” she said.

Awosika, however, advised the graduates not to allow circumstances to overcome their sense of vision.
She also enjoined them to seek knowledge with character, adding that without character, it would be difficult to actualise their dreams.

Some universities are wise and give their students an advantage in the real world than other universities. It's not like they are better than a 2.1 graduate from UNN ABU IBADAN or LAGOS. But they are given these grades with lesser stress.

And the employer doesn't care. He just wants first class. Automatically these other universities who punish their students (A is for their god, B is for the best, C is for the rest etc) disqualify these poor kids from certain juicy vacancies.

We need to revamp and overhaul our educational system. While the Govt universities punish their students unjustly, the private university graduate also has shortcomings.

They live a protected life and are mostly shielded from the real world. And this usually comes back to hurt them in the future.

Let's balance these out with funding, exposure, internships and fair grading. It won't be bad to sack any lecturers with verified victimization on the second count at the most.

Its not about graduating first class. How many of this first class graduate can boast of employment after graduation and service? How many of them will be awarded with jobs, or money to start up a business? Only about 5% may be able to boast abou jobs after their service year, but people like ex BBnaija housemates that promoted porn on national TV will be getting millions and awarded contracts. What's the way forward in this our "beloved Nigeria"?
This's not encouraging! For the fact that there's no job opportunities for now doesn't mean should be pessimistic in your writings.
God is always the forerunner!

There were times some dept had to register 32 units (excluding carry overs). around 2007/2008. People assume CU is a walkover place.
I remember seeing UNN and other eastern school undergrads parade their own SIWES as 15 units course as against 6 units in CU.

Congrats to all the graduands once again.
why do u nairaland users like quoting eastern universities wrongly? I graduated from a federal university in the south east the SIWES has always been a 6 unit module

For those always comparing UK unis number of First class degrees to Covenant Uni. Note that UK Unis uses a grading system that makes bagging a first class easy and not our normal way of calculating CGP here.

We know the public schools are shity but one constant fact is that a first class holder from a public University is heads and shoulder above the one from a private school .I know of people who couldn't score 200 in jamb graduate with first class from private unis lol.

Nigerians love and think you have to suffer head before you get anything in life

I went to this same CU and there has been only 1 first class graduate from the Department of Mass Communication till date (I'm not sure that has changed)

How can u easily have a first class in public universities when

-Cultists will chase you up and down
-No conducive environment, hostels look like where they rear Pigs
-Classes are meh, 200 students in a hall that's supposed to accommodate 90 students
-Lecturers are interested in sleeping with students or selling textbooks. Some don't even Come to class
- You can not walk up to your HOD /VC to have a discussion
- Lecturers see themselves as God
- Lecturers use the same outdated material year in year out

If you have ever left Naija, you'll see how real education is supposed to look like and you'll see how far Covenant University has Come.

During My IT while I was in 200 Level, I was assigned to Hnd Polytechnic students to help in correcting their English before it goes on air (news articles).. Those students made me thank my stars for the school I went to.

So because someone failed jamb or didn't have a good grade in jamb means they can't make it in life again? What kind of criteria is this sef? angry

Bro, you have made a very valid and wonderful point. Let me be frank with you all, covenant is a very good school no doubt. Education requires a conducive environment and an up-to-date teachings as well as researches. That is why I intend doing my Masters degree either in Europe or Asia.
