John Ogu: Nigeria midfielder 'working hard' to secure regular place
By Oluwashina Okeleji
Football Writer, Barcelona

Nigeria midfielder John Ogu has won 20 international caps
Nigeria international John Ogu admits he must be "patient" and wait for his chance with the Super Eagles after struggling to secure a regular place in the starting line-up.

The 30-year-old came on as a late substitute in the 3-2 away win against Libya this month, but failed to make an appearance at the World Cup in Russia.

The Israel-based midfielder believes the situation is not ideal but sympathises with manager Gernot Rohr and insists he still feels wanted by the German.

The country and team comes before an individual so I will keep working hard to get my chance

"I know it's frustrating because I want to play, but I also understand the coach has a job to do," Ogu told BBC Sport.

"We have a great squad, as a footballer I always want to fight for my country on the pitch all the time.

"But the country and team comes before an individual so I will keep working hard to get my chance," Ogu said.

His 20 caps in five years is a disappointing run for the player at international level after winning the Israeli League titles in the past three seasons.

Being overlooked has often led to local fans and media questioning the coach's decision, but the Hapoel Beer Sheva player insists he must bide his time.

"I appreciate the support but I am a realist, there is a lot of competition and some players don't get the chance to play," he added.

"I missed out on the 2014 World Cup; I was picked but didn't play in Russia, this is life.

"I am very happy to be a national team player and I must be patient."

Ogu who has previously played in Slovenia, Spain and Portugal has scored twice for his country.

Nigeria: Owolabi Faults Rohr Over 'Vote of No Confidence' On NPFL Players
By Samuel Ifetoye

Nigeria's former International, Felix Owolabi, has expressed dismay over the comment credited to Coach Gernot Rohr, that he did not see any player at the Aiteo Cup final good enough for the national team.

Rohr was at the Aiteo Cup final once known as the Challenge Cup, where Rangers of Enugu defeated Kano Pillars on penalties to lift the coveted trophy they last won 36 years ago. Rohr was reported (not The Guardian) to have said he couldn't find a player good enough to fight for shirt with the ones he assembled regularly for national engagements.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, Owolabi, who was part of the 1980 Green Eagles winning squad said he would laid the blame of Rohr statement on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), whom he queried never spelt out the details of his job.

According to Owolabi, part of the duties of a national team coach should have included discovering potential talents for the future growth of the nation's football rather than relying wholly on already baked players from abroad.

"I still insist that the future of a country's football lies in the local league. By this, I will say that our administrators have failed us by not letting coaches handling our national teams know, understand and also realise that developing our local league through the invitation of players plying their trade in the local league is paramount to the development of our football.

"It is not enough for a coach to attend a game venue and conclude that he cannot find players in the league, who can replace the ones he current invites to the Super Eagles. And if that is his conclusion, I do not think he has any reason to remain as the coach of the Eagles."

"It will be unkind of a coach to say that he was not interested in the boys playing in the local league because they are not good enough. It means they have failed in duties. Part of the problems was declaring Lobi Stars of Makurdi as winner of the NPFL with some matches left because you do not have a specified calendar year," he said.

The former IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan, however, said that the lack of proper planning by NFF officials was the basis of the country depending solely on foreign-based players.

"A complete dependence on players abroad is simply because we do not have a programme, no structure. I believe a good coach will always indentify potentials in the NPFL. Many times you see England's coach, Gareth Southgate going to Premier League venues, Emirates Cup and the FA Cup to have a first hand of players by himself.

all these una yahaya and co should start performing rather than living on past glory. when last did you watch yahaya play?the promising u21 players we can boast of are

oshimeh
okonkwo
awaziem
kingsley michael
ebere eze
stephen odey
onyekuru
kalu
chukwueze
uzoho
utin

i am yet to watch others so i can't just rely on reports or hype about them
Icon4s:

Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye, Henry Onyekuru, Samuel Kalu, Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Osimhen, Taiwo Awoniyi, Stephen Odey, Orji Okonkwo, Kingsley Michael, Kelechi Nwakali, Musa Yahaya, Sincere Seth, Chidozie Awaziem, Ebube Duru, plus some of the Aigbogun's boys that will excel from the next U20: likes of Ukouwem Utin, Wasiu Alalade and a host of others. And of course some other players will emerge from now till next year.

So, Komekn, these are some of our players who are U21 and they can well compete with some of the top U21 teams in Europe.

If we can qualify with the SA game, I wish the NFF can let us prosecute the Seychelles game with this crop plus likes of Lookman, Eze , Ejaria and co if we can secure them before then.

bros this your tomori and co are just probables that are not certian yet. deji is yet to play any competative match for frankfurt so no one knows the stuff he is made of, okoroji just made it debut in bundesliga last week but still need to prove himself. gong is yet to play up to 5 matches for vitesse(have been out injured), enobakhare's performance in kilmanock i doubt he is been monitored nor have set the league on fire

for now we can only mention few who have proved themselves such as onyekuru, kalu, awaziem, uzoho, eze and a few others.
ChrisKels:

Hmmm not bad though I no see Centre backs there, bar Awaziem.

Let me add Chima okoroji, Deji Behruether as options in the left back. Add Rio Aves' rave of the moment Kelechi John(wanted by Nantes) as one of the Centre backs. Also put Josh Maja in that probables' list from England. Add Hillary Gong of Vittesse. Add Bright Enobakhare on loan to Kilmanock from Nuno's Wolves, Add seyi Ojo and possibly Tomori (my best CB in the championship so far this season), Nnamdi Oforburh of Bournemouth, also add Aston Vila's U23 first choice goalkeeper Emmanuel Okokon Idem. Plenty of dem oo

But the German league is actually a good place if not better than the EPL for building young players...
Look at Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson two young English boys doing well in the German league. Lookman also had a good season in Germany. Nothing wrong in Rohr preferring German based players.

preferring German based players and ignoring other league players...?
so you supporting his parochial disposition towards players invitation?

what sense does that make?
a coach ought to broaden his horizon and be open minded as regard players invitation.
so to you the German league and all its lower divisons are better than what is obtainable in England?
good players can be found in every league...especially in England where majority of Nigeria players dwell.

let the home-based players prove it first ..
no players should be invited based on sentiments.
mere caf competitons they fumble...only God knows had it been enyimba scaled thru to caf finals the hype would have scatter these thread by now...and rohr would have been in trouble if he does not invite the entire team....

these same crop of players I watched in the last CHAN... almost spoilt my eyes.

Going into the world they were ranked 14th
After the world cup they have been consistent with winning (4 of 4). Unlike Senegal and/or Morocco inconsistent runs (draws and wins). It's well deserved

Why do we get sentimental when it comes to home based players?

The fact is that the best players move abroad. Many of those still in the league have been unsuccessful in foreign trials. The league quality as it stands now is not good enough for the national team. Let the players go abroad and prove their quality in better leagues. The best ones will shine when the standard is raised. Others will fade away.
