The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed all its missions abroad to compile a list of willing Nigerian nationals who wished to come back home.

Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed that this was a sequel to requests by Nigerians stranded abroad in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

She, however, said that the MFA had instructed that “the financial implications will be borne by the prospective evacuees, who will be compulsorily quarantined when they returned”.

According to a statement on Friday by the Head, Media and Public Relations Unit, NIDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, interested citizens should inform the embassy in their country of residence about their intention to return to Nigeria.

It said, “The interested Nigerians are advised to inform the missions in the various countries they are in, which will then collate and coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“To this end, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians stranded abroad willing to return home to key into this Federal Government gesture by providing information to the mission in their respective host countries.”

The PUNCH had reported that some countries including the UK, US, Israel and member States of the European Union had begun evacuating their citizens from Nigeria using emergency flights permitted by the Federal Government.

As long as they are immediately quarantined on arrival for at least 14 days before they are allowed to leave. Perhaps it is better to encourage them to stay where they are at the moment and stay safe.

Please, automatic 14 days isolation (I'm a Government provided accommodation) for them straight from the airport where they can be monitored. It will be stupidity telling them to go mad isolate and report when they feel may symptom. Doing so, they would have been in contact with people.

Edited: it was stated in the news, good one

FG and NCDC weren't proactive enough to personally isolate the ones that had returned that are now spreading the virus

Okay. I bet you those who have got succor from the government won't come back.

It is also an avenue for those with expired visas who are hiding from authorities to take advantage and come back home.

Nice move from the government.

But I have two questions?

1. What modalities will they or are they putting in place to make sure the Covid-19 pandemic doesn't increase when this people come back. How many Quarantine Centres have they made available to Quarantine all those whom they will eventually bring back home.

2. If electricity bills (as commonly called "NEPA bill) can reach every home In Nigeria, why is it impossible for relief materials to reach every home in this country.?

It's like this government isn't happy that our case hasn't turned to Italy and US cases oo. Has FG put in place strict measures and facilities on ground to quarantine them for 14 days before thinking of this? Are those in diaspora crying to come home? Only those who want to come back should be brought after testing them there oo. Those at the top are doing everything possible to justify the amount of money they have planned to embezzle. Chai....

“the financial implications will be borne by the prospective evacuees, who will be compulsorily quarantined when they returned”

Why will I bear the cost of coming back to a place battling with the same case I am running away from?
