I responded to this quite comprehensively days ago, but it seems to have got lost in cyberspace.

Using comparative cost analysis both capital and recurrent to show the A29 not to be long term viable for the NAF, and the limited use of the A29 that will play out in the long term over the recurrent cost barriers.

You have no idea how comprehensive cost analysis is done, stop wasting your time.

@Nemesis8u, thanks for the links, especially those of those big booty ladies. wink
Anyway, the ones about Pakistan using the JF-17 are not really good for the purpose. They are all about Pakistan saying they did this and that without corrobating proof from outside sources and foreign intelligence services.
I'm not really sure if I should believe what Pakistan is saying or what the rest of the world is and not saying, if you catch my drift.

Some of the drones able to do their work efficiently rely on IP, technology and patents we don't even seem to have access to. We could get there via R& D but takes significant money, years of experience and the best brains.

Still baffles me how Nigeria claim to build & fly drones without military Satellite.

Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by jpphilips(m): 10:00pm On Apr 29, 2020

My post that addressed this muddle of misinformation and propositions under pinned simply by your self birthed presumptions was addressed by me quite some time ago. However, for reasons unknown that post has gone missing.

The analogy of the Qassem Soleiman brazen assassination by the USA with its MQ-9 Reaper UAV, is in generalist terms to highlight the efficacy of UAV in precision attacks. The Chinese Wing Loong II UAV is not as good but retains for the price outstanding attributes of which the Chinese not me claim to compete with the $30 million MQ-9. ( that is over hype to me) So that comparison is dubiously misleading and not part of the original discourse. The reference to the MQ-9 by me is indicative generalist and not specific related.

The original discourse centers on the question of "Best value and the most efficient use of resources for the greatest impact in the NE" You can have a short term and long term view.

In that context the comparison was made by cost and delivery outcome impact of Wing Loong II against IMO overpriced and limited value A29 Tucano.

The unit cost of Wing Loong II is approximately $1million and the approximate unit cost of the A29 in excess of $33 million excluding all the contract add ons for the $600 million contract procurement package. Effectively means procurement unit cost of one A29 is equivalent to over 30 Wing Loong II UAV's

You created inadvertently a unit of measurement with your factitious comparison of price of precision munitions Specifically the $115K USA missiles you create even more questions about the A29 sustainability over the short term and long term.

However going back to the inception false premise, that the A29 is the best air frame for COIN , thats simply not true. The role of the A29 in current and past USAF operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, is essentially non existent in comparison to other USAF assets deployed. This is a fallacy a outcome delivery of deceptive marketing targeted to inconsequential associate nations.

NATO declined procurement of the A10 as being not fir for purpose. At the time there was unequivocal agreement that the A10 was not better than the existing NATO assets and that included the Jaguar, Mirage and F16'S. That there other precision weaponry that could be brought to the conflict that was more efficient for close support such as with attack , helicopters and guided munitions.

The word COIN is the very fluid it is not some concept that is rigid, particular and exact, it really is very broad, so you are misleading yourself.

In this day and age nobody is strafing ground targets at low altitude with 30 mm cannon fire in support of ground troops. In these engagement there is close proximity and the danger of friendly fire is too high, i.e. blue on blue. Add to that if you fly the A29 at that low altitude it will be a target AA fire. As a consequence the A29 relies entirely on it precision weaponry for the efficiency of its strikes against enemy targets not nose diving gun trucks this isn't WW2.

Now you have made this rod for your own back, how much are the expensive ATGM's, laser guided bombs, etc that the A29 uses according to you $115k a pop. When the first batch of bombs are used up, will we have the $$$ to buy more Is that long term sustainable

The MQ-9 is $30 Milion and the Wing Loong II is $1 Million, its reasonable to project that the precision weaponry ATGM, Lazer guided bombs, etc will be a mere fraction of the cost of the USA similar ones and as usual way over priced.

As a result we will start attaching non adaptable munitions with no precision targeting to the A29 because we cant afford the expensive USA procured ones, then all the associated service costs of replacement parts and avionics updates, etc will make this plane almost useless. Within 4 years there will be all kinds of queries and allegations. It will end up being a liability if we are not careful and not better than the Alpha and F7's for the role we procured it for.

Boko dont have the technology to hit at high altitude aircraft so the possibility of an A29 or a Wing Loong II being shot down is almost no existent. So whenever this war ends we will still need surveillance in the sky.

Currently we should have 24/7 365 complete surveillance of the NE only a UAV can give you that one that has an endurance of 32 hours compared to 6 hours for a A29. The cost of 2 A29's gives us 60 +Wing Loong II UAV's that means short term and long term we can have coverage over the national maritime waters and beyond. That is long term sustainability. In addition the cost of keeping that UAV in the air for 24 hours plus much much cheaper than the A29.

The USA has no regard for Nigeria, the people yes maybe but the leadership a big NO. Why that is a never ending debate, which includes corruption. Now if they dont value us why on earth are we partnering with them, for goodness sake. Marriage is not by force, if USA will not marry us France, Germany, Russia, Ukraine , etc no deh. Essentially if the USA will not consider us a strategic partner then we find somebody who will.

It is a very pertinent point the USA does not use this aircraft in any significant way. None of its serious or valued partners use who are fighting COIN wars at different intensities. But some how, many on this forum think it is a great solution for the NE . What the NE needs is surveillance but the right commodification infrastructure and a 1000+ more fir for purpose armoured vehicles to enable combatants have the capacity to engage the enemy.

Finally a verbatim statement from Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein that tells the story of the A29 in a nutshell if you read between the lines.

"Our focus is on how a light attack aircraft can help our allies and partners as they confront violent extremism and conduct operations within their borders," Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein said in the release. "Continuing this experiment, using the authorities Congress has provided, gives us the opportunity to put a small number of aircraft through the paces and work with partner nations on ways in which smaller, affordable aircraft like these can support their air forces."

Loads of disinformation, you were gloating over the Soleimani hit to buttress the efficacy of the Chinese drones before I murdered your position with a proper cost analysis, thats what debates are for, we cross fertilize ideas, so there is no shame in admitting you screwed up with that example.

NATO never said the A10 Warthog is not fit for purpose, thats a concocted rubbish you made up, NATO said it's role doesn't fit their battlefield doctrine, NATO allies dont do US type of CAS, they prefer Battlefield Air interdiction normally done away from friendlies.

As a matter of fact, when the European threat environment evolved due to Russian aggression, Nato members requested for the A10 warthog & they were glad it came to do the job it does best.
enlighten yourself here: https://www.military.com/daily-news/2015/06/17/us-allies-happy-to-have-a10-warthogs-back-in-europe-airmen-say.html

USAF planned to decommission the Warthog in 2019, congress refused, approved $333m for their missions later DOD awarded another $900m contract to Boeing to replace aging wings, so those beasts are in service till 2030 or 40.

Again you are misleading yourself, A29 doesn't straff its guns on AA's or in an AA threat environment, there is a reason it has ISR capability, it takes out the big guns first from a distance then straff the light arms.
That's the US strategy for the Warthog as well, take out the big guns with Maverick AGM then straff.
Conversely, if you believe A29 30mm guns will create blue on blue, how come you are recommending Wingloong 2 that throws Arrow 7 missiles? grin grin you are confused.

Go back and read what I wrote on the $115k per pop, and NAF being on low budget, again you are confusing yourself.

Is it Nairaland Air Force that neglected other areas Abi which NAF

The C130s...where are the concentrated? Lagos
Heard of 97 SOG, PH that runs the Mi35p?
81AMG Benin?

That said. Any attack that'd take place in the coast will not just "show up". And by Attack I mean tangible things like opposing Navies and not gunboat marauders.

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and Nigerian Army Armoured Corps (NAAC) will stregthen its cooperation in the training of cadets. This was revealed during a courtesy visit to NAAC Headquarters by commandant NDA, Major Gen Jamil Sarham, in Bauchi on Tuesday 10 March 2020.

Gen Sarham told his host Maj Gen JO Akomolafe that he is personally in Bauchi to inspect cadets of 67 Regular Course (Army) tour to NAAC. He added that NDA under his command had recently rejig cadets tours to involve operational areas so as to enable cadets have a feel of the realities they are bound to face in the field after commissioning as officers.

In his remarks, Maj Gen Akomolafe described the new cadets tours as a welcome development which will enhance cadets operational efficiency after commission. He commended Maj Gen Sarham for taking a keen interest in his cadets training and noted that this is first time during his tour of duty that any NDA Commandant will personally inspect cadets for such a tour.

Gen Akomolafe further assured the Commandant NDA that NAAC will key into NDA transformation by deploying more armoured officers to serve as instructors to the Academy.

Cadets of 67 RC (Army) have commenced series of operational tour to operational areas. Part of the activities held in cadets tour to Bauchi include lectures, static display and fire power demonstration.

BlackBaron:

Tsaigumi has never been shown conducting reconnaissance since commissioning. I'll eat my hat if Ichoku is anything closer to reality than words they keep releasing.

Some of the drones able to do their work efficiently rely on IP, technology and patents we don't even seem to have access to. We could get there via R& D but takes significant money, years of experience and the best brains.

I usually avoid commenting unless necessary.

We are like under a curse, even as good as NAF is behaving in decisions they make, this is a bad idea, a waste of money and time. I think Arone company owners have insider connect at top level in NAF drone research program and they sold the idea to head of R & D who also may see personal profit in it and signed the NAF-Arone deal, Arone has no theoretical knowledge or practical ability to build any drone for anybody anywhere.

Arone is not a registered company, it exists only on an internet website, it has no real office, the staff sit in a hub shared work space for several start up new businesses that have no resources to operate. So how do these 20 and 30 something years old boys with no funds, no world class relevant qualifications, no previous cognate similar work experience, claim to be building drones and NAF chose them as partners?

The whole team are all locally schooled guys including a CEO with a false claim of USA MIT University laboratory qualification when actually he is Enugu Nsukka graduate of Mathematics who did during his early campus days as UNN student, a cheap easy online paper course of a few weeks Stanford University for theory only knowledge of a practical course called Machine Learning that he cannot apply practically to build anything. Saying they build drones is a big lie and insult to the intelligence of all Nigerians.

Arone CEO false claims, https://www.linkedin.com/in/emmanuelezenwere/?originalSubdomain=ng

All their technology experts have likely never stepped outside of Nigeria, not even to Ghana to learn any drone building tech, they can only do paper writing and 3D animation videos, any real drone they build will be small drone with imported parts harvested from the DJI type mini-drones sold in shopping malls overseas and online Amazon sales shop. Is that what they will produce for NAF to fight real wars?

Arone at best can do same thing they do now in Tanzania, Uganda, etc, buy $3,000 civilian copter drone on Amazon online, use it as civilian logistics delivery drone for boxes of packaged goods like blood banks delivery to hospitals in difficult locations as a UAV medical materials delivery service. Ask them to show you that green white drone with multiple tilt-rotors propeller high tech drone they painted with Arone name, its not real, and if shown, its not their original product, or where did they get high performance gyroscope and FLIR electro-optics components?

The Arone company technical team, they all schooled and worked here with us in the east, S.E. Naija local boys.

Look, hot truth is, NAF has been offered top class expert support from Nigerian engineers with real M.Eng./PhD from American Universities, very senior engineers working for many years in project design and factory production as staff of Boeing makers of Scan Eagle UAV , NASA space program, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Predator/Reaper Armed Drones projects, Lockheed Martin fighter jet program, but NAF ignored all of them, they say they are not interested, so NAF rather chose other type of Nigerians who make drones only on 3D animated images.

Check Arone official website, the drone they claim to have built is in a 3D animated cartoon video clip show of 49 seconds! Let them show us a real drone that is Arone made own copyright product, they have nothing.

All their so called qualifications in drone courses are poor certificates from theory paper courses from unaccredited online tuition houses.

The fraud is, these are guys from the east and the top level of NAF research centre is mostly controlled by senior officers from the east, they just brought their junior brother to make millions off NAF tight budget.

Nigeria may never develop technologically because the first qualification for those who can do it right, is to know the top officials that will approve the deal, so what if they dont know anybody at the top, the whole of Nigeria has to remain backward and suffer?

Its a disappointing one from NAF like the strange NAF procurement of Poland made Honker 4x4 tactical trucks purchase that has now vanished from service operating around 2016.

This a deliberate NAF monkey banana technology partnership deal that will not achieve anything real for Nigeria's long delayed drone production dreams and cost maybe some small $2 million in public funds that will just vanish on worthless projects spending to be covered up as research /development costs, I guess its just a smart money diversion for NAF top men to eat after doing a good job in most other aspects.

That good job is actually a normal average common sense performance from 2015, it only looks fantastic to us as Nigerians because the NAF before them did very bad jobs for years up to 2014. In a sane country of sensible humans like Ethiopia Botswana Morocco, all that NAF is doing well now, will just look ordinary average to their citizens.
