The evergreen words of Jesus Christ in the Bible.

New Living Translation

Luke 14: 28-30

28 “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? 29. For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30. saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish".

Think like Jesus Christ. Be smart. Hire a Quantity Surveyor today and you will be glad you did.

Nigerians can not understand certain things. Contractors are the builders of Construction works in America. I'm a Civil Engineer with major in Structures. I work as a Construction Inspector, my specific Title in the Department of Transportation. We are under the State of Maryland Office of Construction. Office of Construction has different professional Engineers working in it. Design Engineers are the one with Professional Engineering(PE) license and it a requirement to be a Designer. If you are into Construction and not Designing as a Civil Engineer, you don't need the PE to practice construction. This apply to other areas of Engineering. If you want to work for an Electrical Engineering firm as a Designer, you will need a PE to do so too. But not as a electrical contractor. I hope that clears things up a little.

There are Professional Engineers required to have License if they want to DESIGN. This apply to all professions in Engineering: the KEY difference is DESIGN. Construction or Contractor does not require Professional license. The Professional Engineers licensed (PE) do not come to the site at all. They design the job from their office and the Contractor bid for the contract to build it. We Inspector are Quality Control(QC/QA) representing the interest of the owner or government. we ensure the Quantity and Quality of the material as designed and verify the Source of Supply (SOS) as well in compliance to the already approved Supplier.

Honestly, this is a Design issue. The stairs is never suppose to be like that. We do this in Nigeria to conserve space because we are trying to get the impossible into possible. if you had enough space, you will get a better result with proper landing. That will fail inspector all day long!

But like a GM in Lands once told me: "Its due to Nigerian Constraints American Man" lmao

Dennis3D:

Its my design and that's what the client want.
Making him request for such in his saloon to.

Pictures below shows the main building and the saloon staircase.

Note: There are different types and patterns of staircase designs. So clients have the options of the ones they prefer...

am new on this thread, need some help. trying to renovate an old building in the village, add more blocks to raise the roof and change the roof, going for a flat roof design. house size is the old style village roofing style L /U shape 3 12 x 12ft rms, 14 x 12ft parlor, bathroom, toilet, kitchen about 14ft x 10ft total. this is the rough estimate from the builder. the wood appears too much to me, since its flat roof, we are going for. is the workmanship ok,? even the transport appears high again. pls mek una help me, i be jjc, hence why i gave the job to a builder, and not direct labour.location is imo state

there is option of cameroun zinc and long span roofing sheet, going for cameroun zinc to save cost

It is not a design issue and not in any way to conserve space where there is any. Like I said earlier the client prefers it. You can't force your choice over another client. If you want to see other staircase we have done with landing. Visit this thread here... And others on our profile posts...

That’s a winder staircase. It’s a variation of an L-shaped staircase without a flat landing. It’s cool when you design it well.

boay:
The debate/argument about superiority or who leads a construction team is not really necessary. It all depends on the peculiarity of the situation. I have seen construction companies whose teams are led by QS, some Architect and some builders.

However, the architect is usually the prime consultant in most project and do lead the project team more. From experience, For government projects, the Architect usually leads the project consultants (QS, M and E Engr, Structural Engr, etc) But that is not about superiority. When you have 2 or more persons, one must take leadership, the same is applicable to family.

Dont forget that a relatively new discipline has emerged in the construction industry which is construction project management.

My input is concluded here: let each professional stay on his track. I am a Quantity Surveyor (QS) and a Certified Construction Project Manager (CPM)

Construction is such a broad topic, so what you have said should be be limited to building construction.

I am sure an Architect has no leadership place in a bridge construction, power substation, road construction etc

Who is team lead in a bridge construction, a civil Engineer. Who is team lead in a power substation construction, an Electrical Engineer. Who is team lead in a petroleum refinery construction, a petroleum Engr.

Yes, construction project management is relatively new but the practice has been there. People who are qualified for this position are usually people who have proven experience in project management. Another relatively new discipline is cost engineering.

In Nigeria, yes the contractor must not be a professional engineer or Registered Engineer (RE in our case), but his construction must be supervised by an RE who signs an undertaking for the construction. You may never see the RE on site but he is responsible especially for QC/QA.

The government inspectors like you are hold the RE responsible for the QC/QA issues.

Secondly, every company registered with the government for construction activities must have an Engineer in the board of directors. So an Architect cannot register his own company as a construction company without having an Engr as one of the directors. I have given my credentials to some architects for this purpose.

The problem here is not about Landing or No landing, the combination of the Spiral and L formation and the inaccurate Rise to Run of the Spiral is not complete. There will be a tripping hazard at that particular area, mark my words!

I am not trying to discredit your work but there are codes in construction that give the Minimum measurement to achieve functionality and safety. And what I see do not meet it. Its all good Sir

I wish I could mark those words as stated.
A riser of 150mm and a thread depth of 300mm doesn't meet standard just because there is a twist on the staircase design which is done to standard?

If you have a better staircase detail state it here. Moreover, I have shared other staircase design here and am sure maybe you are yet to read it up.

I would wonder what you will have to tell 85% of semi Detached structures in Lekki and island that their staircase is risky too?

Pls when doing a criticism which is welcomed by all. Do it constructively and realistically. Speaking of hazard, the stair you are talking about is safer than spiral staircase which is used in some residential and mostly in commercial properties that flow more traffic on it.

Without mixing words... If you are not on ground to confirm what you see. You don't have to jump into conclusion... The staircase you are seeing would be 3yrs old by December and the client and family have walked on it several times till date without a complain.

In 2012, I built 2 units of detached duplex for a nairalander and the client engaged independent consultants (structural, mechanical and electrical) to double check my work. Each of them had nothing less than 20 years experience and they were paid heavily to do this. This is outside the estate project managers, government inspectors (LASBCA) and the design architect who come in at every critical stage to check and sign off the work and ensure the "as-built" conforms with the design.

The client is here. I'm sure he's not trying to show off but doing exactly what a good project manager should do on every project.
