Thanks so much for the enlightenment guys.
So judging from ur analysis, what oil specification would u recommend for a Toyota camry 2005 being used in Lagos?
Mind u, I presently have 20w50 there (synthetic), the dealer used that to service it as the car recently arrived. Guys on nairaland have scared the hell out of me telling to go drain or and use the 5w30 recommended which I planned doing in few weeks time until I came across this thread.
I also crave for good fuel economy.
Moreso, what does APL, XHP, GSX etc mean and which one will be most suitable for my car?

And rightfully so.

This thread died in December
Timenamoney woke it up days ago
Oil sellers will resume soon with 5w30 and condemn 20w50 not knowing fully well that the manufacturer only recommends oil.

If you are not lazy, pls type your car's model and Google it out.

They will insert panic attack in you if you follow them too closely.

Check the manual of your car online and you would be amazed at what you would observe.

The thread did not die because I am through with the locally produced engine oils which from my analysis is not recommended for any vehicle. It has made a lot of the producers to listen to the yearnings of the motorists. You wanted answers to your questions and I will try and give you the answers from experience. Toyota seriously forbids the owner of the car from using gasoline and diesel engine oil. They also specified the API number to use till they moved to 5w20 and 0w20. If you check the manual of recent Toyota cars, 0w20 is listed as the only specification for all weather. But the problem is to identify the right oil for your car. Not all 5w30 are suitable or even 0w20 for your car. G Life gave a caveat that their oils are suitable for compact engines and you find a lot of people using it on their V8 engines. A lot of people are using Asian oils that dries up faster and complain that their oils are drying. A lot of engine clatters arises as a result of poor quality engine oil being used.I have stopped using Mobil 1 US because a lot of people are complaining of the drying up. From the current repair situation, oil mixture with water and engine clatter is the warning sign to use what the manufacturer recommended because we are yet to produce a generator talkless of ignoring the recommendations of the manufacturer of the car.

0) check your car engine oil chart diagram for recommendation of different hot ambient temp , or CONPACTABlE with Lagos temp
1) 20w50 SYNTHETIC is not wrong and will flow better than 20w50 MINERAL oil, giving you some percentage of fuel economy too plus good protection
2) depending on your usage and state temp ,30w for +38 and below , 40w may protect all the way up to +48 to +50degr and have more fuel economy than 50w but will never damage your engine
3)you may start checking your ( mpg ) to know your fuel usage and a ( UOI ) to know engine wear , tear ,or Shear ratio with 20w50 synthetic compared to the 5w30 you may use later
but I bet it only fuel economy u may observe and higher wear with 30w in hot temp above +38 degree

also note that there are many factors that improve fuel economy
1)u most use a themostat to regulates proper engine temp, without the fans running continuesly like many owners do and set up by default to run at 100degr only , it also helps the engine oil to reach operating temp quickly
2) the coolant temperature sensor must perform properly, so it can send signal to the ECU (car computer) that engine temperature is optimal for better performance
3) the O2 sensor must be performing properly to send signal to the ECU about the already burnt fuel and air ratio so that the injectors can limit it's fuel supply for CLOSE LOOP operation, note if coolant temperature sensor read lower temperature always the engine will continuesly running in OPEN LOOP operation and consume more fuel
4) weel aliment and tier air pressure etc.
5) driving habits ,loads etc.

Thanks so much for the info though to be sincere I barely comprehend half of it because of the terminologies.
I marvel at how people like u understand car anatomy this much just as I am familiar with human anatomy which is my line of work.
Please enlighten me more about the mpg and UOI for fuel economy and car wearing, thanks.

We are going to focus on the foreign imported engine oil so that a lot of us should be wary of using any oil just because it is of higher level than the others. Let us reexamine Toyota Corolla 2006 Engine Oil requirements. First it must be gasoline engine oil only, second, it is API SL with the energy conserving. A lot of people are using Mobil 1 US extended performance on a Toyota, it's totally wrong. Oil has levels and Mobil 1 that you will use on a Porsche will not be appropriate to be used on a Corolla. We have Liqui Molly, Addinnol and Motul that will never have reduced oil level as many are suffering with Mobil 1 extended performance. Mobil recommends all season oil and another specifically for Toyota, Honda and Nissan. While I am still researching, I will encourage everyone to use Motul energy 5w30 api Sl engine oil or Liqui Molly and Addinnol as the case may be.

The kinda crap you spew on this forum beggars belief.. Mobil 1 extended performance is essentially the same Mobil 1 with a few additives to ensure it last longer between servicing intervals to help consumers save cost.. how that translates to being a wrong oil for Toyota is just plain stupidity.. I use Mobil 1 extended for all my cars and never had shortage issues because my engines are not abused.

Mobil 1 meets all api sl requirements same with Mobil 1 extended performance which is no different.. Na the name “extended performance Dey confuse u?”

Toyota engines have oil shortage issues, quite a lot of them.. if it shorts Mobil, it will likely short other oils cos it isn’t the oil quality that is the issue but the engine defects.. As you know more than car manufacturers and oil manufacturers, keep saying what u like.

Now they should come and buy addinol because you are now selling it..

You are a fake and a fraud!

I read a car manual that some engines over driving periods and manner can shorten oil a little due to heat. It states that one can simply top it as it is view as been normal.

That's true but in most cases I have heard of BMW. 1 litre for a 1000km but for Toyota, I have used the Mobil 1 on a 2013 Camry and it dried up. I even used the same oil on a Range Rover Sport and it also dried up, that is the amount of oil that dried was alarming. Something needs to be done

Hello Boss,

I use the Honda 5W 30 for my car(Honda and am at 2700 miles the oil is already very black, Does the colour of the oil affect the performance of the oil?

The engine oil is recommended to be used to 5000 miles?

What are your thoughts on the matter? Can i used addinol 5W 30, the delaer told me its for 9000km max

The Addinol CVT oil you recommeded has been wonderful, my gear response has been sweet since i started using the oil.

try and flush the engine and it will clean the interior of the engine. The CVT Oil is one of the best oil currently in the country and it is good for your car.

I was told to use to an Engine cleaner before the next service. Addinol engine cleaner but they would need to open the sump under to get the oil out.

Is this true??

Is the 8000km valid

You will have to use Engine flush cleaner that will be used when you are about to change the oil. The only one that I can recommend is Jensen's engine flush and you don't need to loose any sump. Just pour it in on the old oil and let it engine run idle for 5 minutes and drain out the oil and put fresh oil. As for the long oil interval, even Castrol guaranteed 20000 miles but from my conversation with them, it's not ideal for Africa.

I should just stick to my Honda 5w 30 for 5000 miles right.

Where can I get the engine cleaner??
