Politics / Re: Can Nigeria Remain A Country In The Next Ten Years? by reedonne: 10:10pm On Sep 24, 2014
Do you read history?. Do you know that every country was shaped by war and not by the people?.
China, Japan and Korea was shaped by war. The same with france, england, and germany.
It is the people of a country that learn to tolerate each other, even if every single tribe have its own nation, there will still be problem, a Ekiti yoruba may ask his people to vote for him because Oyo yoruba are merginalizing them etc, so in the end each tribe will start dividing to sub-tribe.

What we need is a new system not disintegration

I stumbled on the country in a report about ease of doing business in Africa. I immediately make few research and at the end of my research, I find out that many small african country are doing better than the well known larger one.
Maybe you should also take a look at cape verde and sychelless as well.

They have a better train army and better weapons than Nigeria. The Nigeria army is not as strong as it used to be since Obasanjo came into power in 99. I still think our army is not as strong to protect Nigeria from invasion from a strong army. we still have a long way to go and this boko haram insurgency proved that our army is weak
Yes, our army cannot defeat egypt(without considering tactics), but we have what it takes to defeat countries like kenya and chad.

That Israel will defeat them in a conventional war?. Can you just mention 5 army that have defeated insurgency in the 21st century?.

Well, my opinion stands still.
Why do you keep making boko haram look like ragtag army?. Why dont you ask what it take US and Pakistan to silence the taliban (or you think we are better than the two country.).
Shekau may be alive but our army are doing their best.

Nigeria armed force is better armed than boko haram (does boko haram have a tenth of the number of our APC, Helicopter, MBT, Jet etc). This is a war against insurgency, even the United State armed force is losing against taliban in afghanistan.
Since US cant defeat taliban, does that means Mexico can touch their land?.
Let Cameroon try that without their boss(France) and Nigeria Armed force will be in younde withing few months.

Ontarget: The reason I am asking this question is because of what we have been witnessing so far concerning the fight against the Boko haram extremists. We have heard the foot soldiers battling the extremist say the lack appropriate firepower to wage a successful combat operation and I am wondering how on earth the Nigerian army could lack weapons to defend this country. I am also wondering how the Nigerian army could be so unprepared and only woke up to buy weapons at the last minute. Why wasn't our arsenal already stocked piled with these weapons a long time ago? If Boko haram can successfully buy sophisticated weapons why cant a whole country like Nigerian buy better sophisticated weapons without involving all these stories we keep hearing daily? Boko harm is not an organized national army and you can image the amount of difficulty and stories involved so far. So what will happen when an organized national army like Cameroon decides to take the whole of Cross River or Benin collects Lagos State? Are we sure Nigeria can collect the territories back? Is this the kind of weapon lacking unpreparedness and politics that will be used to defend this country?

akinsadeez: 1. How can govt address ALL the anger in the society. Seems like a simply impossible task. Anger can't be quantified so how will we know when all d anger has been addressed. also anger is a subjective feeling. What is making me angry might be trivial to someone else and might not even be sensible or related to d govt at all.

2. How can you engage leaders to stop boko haram when some of dem are actually d sponsors or at d very least benefitting immensely from the activities of boko haram.

3. How will the investigation of boko haram links to al Qaeda help us or stop the insurgents
1) Anger cannot be erased but a goverment can create a sense of reliability for its people. When this happen, the anger in the society will reduce.
The goverment must ensure that the people feel that they are doing enough through transparency and good information channel (Ministry of Information, NOA, NTA, FRCN etc)

But I dont think 5000 under 5 children die every year in this town(or city as you wish to call it.)
Also the official poverty rate for Nigeria doesnt reflect here. Same with malaria related deaths.
I think our goverment need to do LG by LG stats so that they can capture more people at the sametime have credible information about each LG in Nigeria.

As for 4, the reason being that with 2 main political parties, ethno-religious divisions can not be exploited by self serving politicians and it also reduces the noise levels from shanty parties
1) You should forget about any non viable state in Nigeria, they are not viable just because they dont want to. Mauritius have a population of less than 1 million people and small landmass with no natural resources but as of today it is one of the best country in Africa, with a GDP per capita higher than south africa's GDP.
4)2 parties wont allow people to create their own party, instead of a 2 party system, we should use a parliamentary system where the rulling party/coalition must have atleast 10% of all state.
Politics / Re: This Could Improve Our Democracy And Our Society By And Large by reedonne: 12:33pm On Sep 20, 2014
RevDesmondJuju: 1. Get rid of states and their executive governors. Most of them are not even financially viable and the case of 4 years uninterrupted immunity from criminal investigation and prosecution is rather a call to impunity to steal as much as possible.

2. Get rid of full time legislators and parliament. These guys just sit on their azz for a full term adding little or no value and given how much these greedy bunch of desperate men allocate for themselves plus the runaway levels of lobbying that can be described as outright bribery and kickbacks, Nigeria will save a huge amount by sacking them.

3. Local Government Chairmen should double as representatives that will convene at Abuja on periodic intervals to address National issues.

4. There should be only 2 political parties with local government elections being the only elections being conducted.

5. The leader of the Political party that succeeds in winning the highest number of LGAs automatically becomes the President of the Nation.

1 and 4 are no go area.

Our first problem is tribal hatred and suspicion base on tribal affliation.
90% of every hausa man will be suspicious of any action taken by an Igbo president just as 90% of Igbo will be suspicious of any action taken by a northern president. The same with yoruba and minority ethnic group.
The only solution to this is a shared rule system. A system where the goverment wont be lead by an Igbo, hausa or Yoruba, a system where the 3 ethnic group will have the same number of representative.
Eg: If Nigeria is divided into 6 zone comprising of Yoruba zone, Igbo zone, Southern minorities zone, Northern minorities zone and Central zone.
The parliament of each of the zone should ratify a list of three people in which the NASS will choose one of them as zonal representative.
The 6 zonal representative will then form the goverment and every decision must have the support of atleast 4 of them. With a situation like this, there will be no problem of:
1)Suspicion base of tribal affliation since every decision will be ratify by atleast 4 rep from 4 different zones
2)Federal superiority over the states: Since the states pick the member of the FEC, the FEC members will follow the position of its zone at meetings and therefore zonal intrests will become national intrest.
3)A super powerful being who can destroy opposition, rig election, or even "islamicalize" or "christianize" Nigeria
4)Voting base on tribal affliation
5)It will reduce the chance of inter-ethnic war.
6)Side-lining of some ethnic from power.

The main problem here is that we are not ready to talk about our problem before talking of solution.
Unitarism will destroy Nigeria because people will blame a hausa/yoruba/igbo/minorities president for everything therefore ethnic back insurgents will spring out which may end up making Nigeria look like somalia and libya.
As for confederalism, how will we divide the country.

Rawani: Berem, can you suggest an alternative formula for PU allocation which will avoid over-crowding and the resultant dis-enfranchisement of registered voters? I am in need of a superior argument because I also agree that the present system gives the south an unfortunate handicap, and kindly share why you view allocation of more PU's to a more populated North as robbery.
If the southern part of Nigeria have 60000 polling unit while the north have 90000 (40:60) polling unit, does that correspond to our population ratio?. Also considering the fact that northerners have more children than southerners, what make you think the number of eligible voter in the north is more than south?.
As for me, I dont see any problem in the number of polling unit anywhere, what I only want is a free and fair election. The number of polling units doesnt give South any unfair advantage since we are not counting it but instead we are counting the votes.
The best excuse he should have given is the landmass instead of population. Nobody will be ready to trek to a far away place to vote on the election day.

aderonila18: No sane government buys weapons with cash. The normal thing is to pay electronically so that it can be verified that the money was actually spent for what was budgeted for. No government will lease a private jet ( under the name of a dubious comapny )while Niegria has so many private jets and then hand so much money to one Nigerian and one foreigner to take that cash into another country when they know it is illegal to carry such amounts of cash into any country without it's government's approval.

All these lies they are sharing!

Truth is Nigerian's eyes have been opened. Everyone I've talked to about this incidence all agree that the Federal Government has a hand in the Boko Haram situation. They are simply covering up for illegal arms being bought for BH.

Haven't you always wondered why it's so easy for BH to buy arms and ship them to Nigeria? Now I understand

So what is stopping our top rate governors like kwankwaso from creating millions of job from agriculture?.
Or do you think only the president have the capacity to do it?.

Caseless2: we have fertile land all over the country . What this mean is, there wil be a multi-axial job opportunity for all frm farming, miling, storage outlets and other farmin related stuffs that demands manpower. Agric was what we were living on b4 we discovered oil, and it remain the only sector that can get half of our population employed. Remember, 70% of our population are in d rural areas and this whr most farming activities take place. In d past, nobody was even interested in goin to abroad, not to even talk of urban centres like lagos. The reverse in d trend is a result of our shift from our agric-based economy to oil-based economy. I read somewhre that only benue can feed africa. Taraba alone is enough to create jobs for over milion nigerians if its economic/tourism/resource potentials ar properly tapped into. Nigeria can survive on taraba alone. This is one out of 36 states in nigeria.
Again, in d 60s Nigeria was fairly an industrial state, until SAP came and quashed everything. If we revive all these, it will cater for all our urgent needs which includes getting our youths to work.
