European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Should Wenger Be Sacked? by rejoice3: 11:34pm On Feb 20, 2012
All these people making noise about sacking Arsene should get this straight: the guy is unsackable! Go to the Emirates stadium, you will see his statue/bust there. He's the most successful in the history of AFC - how d'you sack someone like that? While I don't always agree with him, I still think the guy is a top-top manager. He's kept Arsenal consistently challenging on a shoe string budget for years. People tend not to look at the bigger picture; if you know Arsene well, you will know that he's loyal (almost to the point of stupidity) to his players and board as well. I strongly believe that the board have told him about their limitations in the transfer market, and the fact that one big name must be sold every summer in order to balance the books - only Arsene can do this! Did you know that he was ready to keep Nasri for one more season and let him go for free next season? Obviously, the board weren't having any of that.
You will respect the guy a bit more if you follow this link: http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/2006-2011.html
Since 2006, Arsene has kept Arsenal challenging consistently without breaking the bank. Arsenal are bottom of the league table of net spenders - ask yourself, how does he do it?
It's a case of be careful what you wish for. Arsene will go one day, and the truth will be told afterwards. The problem of Arsenal Football club is the board, not Arsene, but he will never come out and say it. Arsene is not Rafa Benitez or Jose Mourinho; that's just not his style!
Again, ask yourself why the board pushed out David Dein and Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith? It's no coincidence that Arsenal's most successful years were when David Dein was the Vice Chairman. Why did they pitch their tents with the lackadaisical Kroenke instead of the enthusiastic Usmanov? Usmanov will spend big, I mean, the guy is richer than Abrahamovic, and he's desperate to take over. The board members can't stand Usmanov, because they feel that he will start taking all the plaudits when Arsenal start to win trophies.
Arsene spearheaded the move from the 38k capacity Highbury to over 60k capacity Emirates stadium. Match day income is now about £3.5m. Adebayor was bought for £7m and sold for £25; Fabregas was bought for £0.5m and sold for £35; Van Persie was bought for £2.75 and will be sold for around £25m in the summer; Nasri £12m to £25m; Alex Song was picked up for £1m; I can go on and on.
Now ask yourself, which board will sack such a manager?
If Arsene goes and the present board remain, Arsenal will struggle to remain in the top half of the table season in, season out!
Webmasters / Re: GTBank Website Has Been Hijacked? by rejoice3: 12:21am On Feb 17, 2012
@Webstradamus,
Thanks for that screenshot. This is so disgraceful. A popular customer-facing site?
I mean, they should have a default "site down for maintenance" banner to put up whenever any clean up activity is ongoing. How can they possibly deny the outage after being caught pants down as above?  As you rightly said, they're dishonest.
I'll advise every user of their online banking service to assume their PC is infected already and use a live linux CD for their banking activities. Two-factor authentication is already susceptible to man-in-the-browser (MITB) attack, so dont let your little token give you a false sense of security.

Anyone willing to know more about live CD can email security@digiss.net
Webmasters / Re: GTBank Website Has Been Hijacked? by rejoice3: 12:07am On Feb 17, 2012
Yes @  webstradamus  I am for real, infact realer   , I can forward to you the mail that these guys sent to me, I still have it in my box.
@ Kclas, that is why i said they are not too wise, there are other security gates that they can not even smell, besides the Id they are taken through phising, be that as it may they can still wreck some havoc without the token.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E Cash, I ask you again, are you for real? Let me answer that, you're not! When you personally type the domain name into your address bar and get redirected, that's pharming not phishing. When some bloke sends you an email purporting to come from your bank, and asking you to click on a (bogus) link, that's phishing.
For the records, the site was actually hijacked but I didn't find any malicious code on the attacker's server during my analysis.
I think it was just some sort of denial-of-service attack. The site was down for no less than 14hrs on Wednesday (9:30 - 23:30).
I checked back briefly yesterday morning  but found no malicious iframe on their landing page anymore.
As someone said, what disappointed me most is that GTB did not have the decency to explain the outage or apologise to the impacted customers by putting some message on their website. I understand the possible impact that might have had on consumer confidence, but their PR dept could have worked with IT / IT Security to put some sort of spin on the whole episode. Keeping quiet and pretending nothing happened just makes people lose trust in the bank
Webmasters / GTBank Website Has Been Hijacked? by rejoice3: 1:16am On Feb 15, 2012
http://www.digiss.net/resources/blog/entry/gtbankdotcom-hijacked-qshop-closed-please-come-back-laterq

Having got back from the office after a lengthy & busy couple of days, I settled down to watch Barcelona destroy Bayern Leverkusen in the Champions League. Midway through the one-sided match, I got a call from a friend who asked me to check whether I could access GTB's website from my PC. He complained that he had been trying for the past 12 hours without any joy! My initial suspicion was: either his PC was having issues, or his ISP's DNS servers were screwed but it turned out that I was wrong!

I was least expecting that, even if their website had been hijacked, GTB would not have the requisite recovery capabilities to ensure that the site comes back to life within minutes. Anyway, I decided to see things for myself by jumping on my little malware analysis toy laptop. Well, I did indeed find that the site was redirecting my traffic all over the place. The redirection path is thus: mylife.tk=>domain.dot.tk=>search discovered.com=>searchmagnified.com=> (, etc, etc, ) =>cdn.optmd.com.

Even Afrikeo had a pop at them!

How good is this for business? Well, let's imagine that 1000 online transactions of an average value of 10,000 Naira occur on GTB's website every hour. It means that the company loses N10,000,000/hour in transactional value. However, assuming that the site went down just before my friend accessed it at 0900GMT (and still hasn't recovered up till now, which it hasn't) they would have lost N150,000,000 in transactional value. I am not a banker, but assuming the profit margin on this volume is 5%, this represents a loss of N7,500,000. Ok, that's just about enough to pay the annual salary of a middle management staff, but this is an unwanted loss that could have easily been prevented. Besides, GTB's reputation and the confidence of their customers would have taken a bit of a hit, which we cannot put a Naira amount to!

Let's hope our financial organisations learn fast.

Back to the attack; going by my quick analysis, the attacker is focusing on his primary target which is GTBank. User's (secondary targets) are not currently being re-directed to websites hosting malicious codes, but that can change anytime. Before you visit the website, make sure you check the state of your browser and it's plugins here - and do the needful if need be - just in case you're redirected to a website hosting malicious exploit kits

Currently, it looks like a denial of service attack where the attacker is demanding a ransom before handing control of the website back to the legitimate administrator - this is the kind of deep mess you can find yourself in if you fail to guide your critical assets jealously.

One can also make so many educated guesses as to the cause of this incident. The domain does not expire until March 2016, so this isn't the cause of the re-directs. There is a fair chance that the site is running a vulnerable version of Apache which has been exploited as Netcraft shows that the last change (to the site's Apache web server app) occurred yesterday.

Anyhow, let's watch how this event unfolds and hope that our dear GTBankDOTcom recovers on time - I need to do some online banking fast

@OP, try Moodle! www.moodle.org
It's based on LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql PHP), very customisable and open source. I used it for my MSc project in 2006 and there had been loads of improvements on it since then.
Good luck (without the 'Jonathan'wink.
Computers / Re: Which Anti-virus Is Best For Our Computers? by rejoice3: 4:23am On Nov 08, 2011
Ok, someone has said it before, and I'll say it again,
No Anti-Virus is Best for your computer!
For you to be able to choose the best AV product, you will have to have enough data about the following:

1) The detection rate of individual AV product
2) Malware Analysis & Reverse Engineering capabilities of individual AV Vendor
3) % of Heuristic to True Positive detection records of individual AV Vendor

, among other things.

I know some of the terms are jargons to some readers, but will do my best to break them down.
There are 43 major AV vendors (see www.virustotal.com), and virus detection by its very nature is a reactive process.
Here is the virus infection/detection lifecycle:
a) The bad guy writes a malicious software and tries to infect your machine with it.
b) Your AV software does one of 3 things:
b.1 knows about this malicious software, detects it, and removes it - this is called signature-based detection
b.2 doesn't know about this malicious software, but notices that it's trying to change something in part of the operating system which should be out-of-bounds (e.g, registry keys) to such software. It stops it doing this - this is known as heuristic detection. And then the scary third,
b.3 it doesn't detect the malicious software as doing anything malicious to the system. So, it does nothing!!!

The bad guys are constantly innovating ways of making their 'badwares' evade detection by AV products, and unfortunately, they are
doing that pretty well. The good guys (AV vendors, security researchers & whitehats) are always playing catch up. i.e, the bad guy
writes a malicious code, the good guy waits to see what that code does and devises a way to detect and remove it.

The best way to proactively defend your system from compromise is by constantly scanning the OS, apps, Browser & browser plug-ins for
vulnerabilities and applying the relevant patches asap. I posted something about this some time ago;
https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=657332.msg8233938#msg8233938

A malicious software will always look for vulnerabilities to exploit. Getting rid of all vulnerabilities in your OS, apps, Browser & browser plug-ins and so on gives you a better chance of keeping out the bad guy.

I hope some people will find this useful.
Nairaland / General / Nigerian Government Website Defaced! by rejoice3: 12:49am On Sep 13, 2011
This is a national embarrassment, but hey! it's not the first time it's happened.
Renowned IT security blogger, Graham Cluley (Sophos), is reporting that a major Nigerian Govt's website has been defaced.

Here's what the official website of the government of Nigeria normally looks like:

Nigerian government website

And here's what it looks like today, with a title of "Fatal Error ownz you !!!!!":

Defaced Nigerian government website

    Fatal Error !
    by Elemento_pcx & s4r4d0 ,
"Seja você mesmo mas não seja sempre o mesmo" ,  G. o Pensador ,

The message in Portuguese translates as

"Be yourself but not always the same" ,  G. The Thinker ,

Two email addresses are provided by the hackers if anyone needs any help (it's uncertain whether you would contact them for help regarding the website defacement, or to have the profundity of the quote explained to you).

Of course, it's perfectly possible that the email addresses listed belong to people who have no knowledge of the hack - but with the quote written in Portugeuse, it certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see a Brazilian connection.

If you run a website make sure you are doing everything to keep it as secure as possible - for both your organisation's sake, and that of your users. If you haven't already done so, read this informative paper by SophosLabs, "Securing websites", which covers some of the issues.

Full story:

Let's see how long it will remain in this embarrassing state for before somebody wakes up and cleans up the mess!

--------------------

Absolute load of tosh! Why more Federal Universities are needed when the existing ones are under-funded, under-equipped and inadequately maintained is beyond me. I have reasons to believe that President Jonathan is looking for quick wins in all key sectors, but this isn't a clever move.
Specialised institutions? Really? You mean like Cambridge/Havard/Oxford? lol
One thing is certain: Nigerian leaders and decision makers will continue to amaze Nigerians, in a funny way!
Computers / Free Software That Shuts The Door On Computer Hackers by rejoice3: 1:34pm On Apr 30, 2011
I've been using this piece of software for a few years now, and regularly recommend it to my work colleagues.

Attackers gain unauthorised access to your machine by using Trojans, Worms and other malicious programs to take advantage of vulnerabilities in applications and their underlying Operating System.

The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Attacks exploiting vulnerable programs and plug-ins are rarely blocked by traditional anti-virus and are therefore increasingly "popular" among criminals.
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

In my experience, this software is more valuable to your traditional AV software (of course you should still run an AV software on your machine) because it closes the door on the attackers. Threat becomes useless if there is no vulnerability to exploit!
This is a proactive solution as against the reactive (Signature-based) AV solution.

PSI stands for Personal Software Inspector. It's free for home users, but corporate organisations wanting to use its enterprise version (CSI) have to pay.

Read more about this software on the Vendor's website (if needed), download PSI, and stay safe on the InterWeb!

There is nothing wrong with this policy. I think all the required infrastructure are already in place. The missing piece is forcing people to change their attitude to cash which I believe is what Sanusi is trying to achieve.

You said there's nothing wrong with the policy, yet you concede that Sanusi is trying to force people to change their attitude to cash.
I take it that forcing a people to change their attitude in a democratic society isn't wrong too. Or is it?

Business / Re: CBN Imposes Limits, Penalty On Cash Transactions, Again! by rejoice3: 11:53am On Apr 30, 2011
This is a good idea, but like many good ideas in Nigeria, its doomed to fail for lack of proper planning!
Sanusi is trying to enforce cashlessness on the Nigerian economy, yet he fails to realise that so many requirements must be met before this can work.

Let's evaluate some possible options:

1. Telephone Banking
Issues:
What's the current awareness level of the consumers? Is a 1-year period enough to bring the majority of the consumers up to speed?
Given the prolifereation of phone hacking software, do we have an existing legislation for protecting consumers against such loss or prosecution of phone hackers? Doesn't this heighten the risk (if consumers are not protected against loss) to the consumer rather than reduce it?

2. Internet Banking
Issues:
Wow! This is the real deal, but what's the current infrastructural level? How much bandwidth is available to the avergae consumer?
What is the computer literacy/internet literacy level of the average consumer? What about the RISK? Given that criminals are always 'following the money' they will be happy to move into the 'virtual playing ground' alongside the consumers, merchants and financial organisations. This is especially an attractive proposition for the criminals because we don't currently have a law that allows online criminals to be prosecuted.

3. Excessive charges
This is a NO NO! The fundamental issues must first be addressed before this can come into play. You can't just wake up in a morning and decide to do what you like! Not even if you're a CBN governor.
Also, how did they come about the NGN150,000 limit? What is the current limit? Is there a convincing proof that reducing the limit will significantly reduce the risk of robbery?

Finally, has the power issue been addressed? This may not be obvious, but if we are to go down the route of available options, a lot depends on the availability of electricity (think POS, e-banking, ATM, telephone banking). Power problem, if not addressed, will then create another layer of problem for the average consumer as s/he now needs electricity to do smthg which s/he would otherwise not have needed it for.

Think Sanusi. Think!

Why do most Nigerians allow religiosity to becloud their common sense? How many years have we been praying for Nigeria without any results? What level of prayer took the Swedes, Germans, English, Chinese and Indians to where they are today?

As an ardent Arsenal fan, it pains me to say I'm not feeling confident as our boys have got a mental block against Chelski. It seems Drogba will always score against us even if he sits on the bench from start to finish (like the ball could come out, hit him on the head, and GBAM 1-0 cool

Having said all that though, I am secretly hoping to be pleasantly surprised. If we get the 1st goal, we'll have a gr8 chance!

Ok, no offense, it was for the want of a better word
Seriously, it does my head in when pple don't take security & confidentiality seriously. It's got nothing to do with trust, it's common sense. Being careless with your passwords/PIN and stuff makes you or your loved ones vulnerable to all sorts of exploitation. Consider this: You know your boss' pwd and he knows yours. His wife knows his passwd, and because he cares less about confidentiality, the wife knows her staff's (you & other) pwd, so she has access to their confidential stuff, the chain carries on like that and the weakest link in that chain can expose all the parties unnecessarily.
I work in a field where I get to clean up a lot of mess because users just don't get it! Look at the bigger picture; you never know whom your friend knows that has malicious intents towards you etc, just my 2p worth

, And in terms of relationship, I'm very, very happy in the one I am thank you very much

Why are you behaving as if you've got a PhD in Marriage Matters? This is only a forum and there is no need to be rude to virtually every contributor. I don't know how old you are, but growing old is different from growing up. Choose the latter, will ya?

@OP,
Looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel afterall. At least your wife does miss you. Now it's time to show her more love and care than she can ever imagine and while you're at that, make her realise that the only way you can continue to live peacefully is if you both agree to move her mum out. You've got to be as diplomatic as possible (c'mmon, aint you a man?).
If diplomacy doesn't work, then use force tactics, but make this a last resort.
You've got to what you gotto do to make your marriage work (esp. for the sake of the kids).

Absolute load of tosh! Does that mean if you can't get pregnant for some reasons after the marriage e.g your husband's got low or no spermatozoa count, you'd go out and get him a *bas.t.ar.d* child? If you miss the main purpose, then you're unlikely to have your thinking cap on in your quest for a child (at all cost). The main purpose is LOVE. If you love your partner, then the rest is 2ndry!
