Celebrities / Popular Celebrity Makeup Artist Stephanie Flor, Teaches Us Some Life Lessons by Slytee(m): 1:15pm On Jun 03, 2016

Stephanie Flor, who is a popular makeup artists to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. You can see her work in publications like Teen Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily (WWD). When Stephanie Flor is not on set, she would be busy traveling the world and discovering beauty secrets of women across the globe. Essence caught up with the jet-setting makeup artist to get a few life lessons she’s learned from her exciting career.

1) Don’t take it personally.
“You won’t be everyone’s cup of tea don’t take it personal. A lot of times we want to make sure everyone loves us, and loves our makeup. As artist we have to make our client happy. I think my best clients are the ones that are looking for a great artist not a party around them. I’m low key, but I still have a voice. I won’t click with every talent; some celebrities need a little fun around them and others just want trustworthy talent.”

2) Always be ready.
“Be prepared for anything. There have been so many times I’ve been asked for crazy requests for makeup, and it’s crucial for me to have the right products or the right relationships to call a favor in. I’ve been in Aspen and my clients said I want glitter lashes—a simple call to a friend at Makeup Forever can get those to me ASAP.”

3) Know what you stand for.
“Stay true to your art form. I’m all about evolving your technique, but it’s important to know what your work stands for. Be inspired by the trends around you but you should also be a trend maker. Come with ideas; just because everyone else is doing it (cough, cough Instagram) doesn’t mean everyone wants that look. I spend most of my time doing beautiful, clean skin for brands like Clinique who want to enhance the beauty, not cover it.”

4) Stay humble and friendly.
“Make friends. I’m the luckiest girl to be surrounded by friends who are the best artists in the industry. Some of my biggest opportunities come from my peers, and there’s nothing like cheering on artists you’ve come up with since your early stages. Be humble, be kind, and be giving. The more you give, the more you get.”

5) Remind yourself of your greatness.
“You are a legend in your own mind. My mentor Crystal Wright always says the reason you’re not working is because you are a legend in your own mind. The minute I think I’m the talent I think its time for me to walk away. We are there to make beauty, not be the entertainment. Be there 100% for your clients, and they’ll bring you along for the ride.”

Nairaland / General / He Pushed His Wife To Save Himself, He Wasn’t Wrong - Find Out Why He Is Right by Slytee(m): 1:10pm On May 31, 2016

Most time, I wonder why we humans, feel the need of judging and degrading others. It’s human nature to compare ourselves to others, whether it’s to our family members, peers or even celebrities we see in the media. We always base these comparison or judgments on ourselves and others.

People are very much different. No two people are completely alike. We need to accept these differences and stop judging people. It is hurtful to the victim because it makes them look bad. Even if one does not verbalize their judgments, it does not mean their insensitive thoughts are acceptable. It goes with the saying: If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

While walking on the road, it’s easy to look at the person walking past you and make quick judgments. These judgments are usually based upon their outward appearance. This leads to the notion which says ‘looks do not make a person’. So what if the girl is wearing a crazy outfit or if that boy has green hair? Does this make them a freak and a target for ridicule?

The answer is absolutely NO.

Who are we to judge how others act, look or what the do?

A teacher was teaching her class and relayed to them a story about a cruise ship that capsized at the deep sea. And on that ship was a couple that managed to make their way to a lifeboat, but then realized there was only space for one person left.

At that moment, the man pushed the woman behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself. The woman stood on the sinking ship and shouted one sentence to her husband.

The teacher stopped for a moment and asked the students, “What do you think she shouted?”

Most of the students excitedly answered: “I hate you! I was blind!”

The teacher noticed a boy who was silent throughout, she got him to answer and he replied: “Teacher, I believe she would have shouted – Take care of our child!”

The teacher was surprised, asking: “Have you heard this story before?”

The boy shook his head: “Nope, but that was what my mom told my dad before she died of a disease.”

The teacher lamented: “The answer is right.”

The cruise ship sunk, the man went home and brought up their daughter single-handedly.

Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter found his diary while tidying his belongings.

It turns out that when parents went onto the cruise ship, the mother was already diagnosed with terminal illness. At the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival.

He wrote in his diary:

“How I wished am at the bottom of the ocean with you, but for the sake of our daughter, I can only let you lie forever below the sea alone.”
The story is finished.

The class was completely silent so the teacher knows that the students understood the moral of the story, that of there are many complications in the world which are hard to understand. That is why we should never judge others without understanding them first.

There are people who like paying bill for there friends. The do not do so because they are loaded with money but because they value friendship above money.

There are people who take initiative to work. The do not do so because they are stupid but because they understand the concept of responsibility.

There are people who apologize first after a fight. The do not do so because they are wrong but because they value the people around them.

Those who often text you, do not do so because they have nothing better to do but because you are in their heart.

One day, all of us will get separated from each other. We will miss our conversations and the dreams we had. Days, months and years will pass until this contact becomes rare.

One day, our children will see our pictures and ask: “Who are these people?”

And we will smile with invisible tears because a heart is touched with a strong word and you will say: “It was them that I had the best days of my life with.”

So never judge others without understanding them instead try to see the best in them.

Pets / So Sweet! See What The Baby Who Was Rescued By A Dog Now Looks Like by Slytee(m): 2:18pm On May 26, 2016

Life is indeed beautiful when God is involved! Hope you guys remember the story that created lots of buzz and misty eyes among social media users, of how a dog rescued a new-born baby in Oman last year October?

A dog found a newborn child that had been abandoned in the street by his mother in a near waste bin. The dog took the baby (with umbilical cord still attached) in her mouth while avoiding hurting him and put him in front of a house. The residents of the house immediately took the baby to the nearest hospital and the doctors confirmed that the baby boy is doing well. The dog, was being called “an angel sent from the heavens”.

At first, you might be horrified at the sight of a stray dog with a newborn baby in its mouth. Speculations whether the dog was actually trying to feed off the poor newborn would have surfaced. But as many of us know, dogs are a man’s best friend for a lot of reasons. This dog is no exception. It actually saved the baby in its mouth without even harming the baby and not to actually go off eating it.

All Thanks to the loving and caring dog who showed the abandoned baby more to what his own mother showed him

The baby boy today is alive and in perfect health , he was adopted by a Police officer after medications. The boy now looks sweet! See the little boy’s photos…

What do you think of this heroic act by a dog?

Education / Wow! This Handless 7yrs Old Girl Wins Handwriting Contest by Slytee(m): 3:47pm On May 10, 2016

You may look at Anaya Ellick and see a child who’ll have a lifetime of challenges. But i see her as a girl who’s providing a lifetime of inspiration. Like many children her age, 7yr old Anaya Ellick loves reading, drawing, and writing. She spends hours drawing and working on her handwriting. All that practice paid off when she won a national penmanship award, a remarkable honor for a first grader just getting the hang of writing. What’s more remarkable than a little girl born without hands wining a handwriting contest?

In order to write, Anaya holds a pencil between her arms and stands at her desk to get the right angle for writing. Yet her handwriting is genuinely the neatest handwriting in her whole class.

This is what her winning writing looked like:

Anaya competed against 50 other children to win the Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellence in Penmanship. The teachers at her school weren’t surprised that Anaya won the award, but the girl experienced a little shock. When mom, Bianca Middleton, told her that she won the prize, Anaya kept saying “For real? Are you serious?”…The soon led to excitement.

While Middleton, her mother felt overjoyed that her daughter’s handwriting won recognition, she wasn’t truly surprised. Because since Anaya was born, she was a fighter. She has always been so positive and confident and has never been down on herself. Middleton also recalled how she swaddled her infant daughter, she struggled to get out and move. As Anaya grew, she realized she was different than other kids, but she set her mind on doing exactly what other children did. When prosthetists tried to give her a modified fork with a strap to hold it on her arm, the girl refused to use it, insisting on using a fork like everyone else. Anaya simply grasps it between her forearms to eat.

Middleton admited to the fact as a mother she sometimes struggles to watch Anaya attempt a new task; Middleton wants to help so much. But she knows that her daughter wants to do everything on her own. She taught herself to tie her shoes. She insists on dressing herself. At the playground, she climbs up ropes, scurries across the monkey bars, and swings as high as she can. Once in a while Middleton has to reminds her daughter Anaya it’s good to ask for help. But as much as she tries guiding her daughter, Middleton finds that she’s the one who learns.

“Anaya has been my teacher from the very beginning,” she says. “I look at her like ‘Wow, God blessed me with this little girl. I am honored.'”

For winning the contest, Anaya gets $1,000 and a trophy, according to Zaner-Bloser’s website. Her school won too, as the company awarded it a gift certificate to be spent on print and digital resources for students and teachers.

Education / The Shephard Girl From Morocco Who Is Now The Minister Of Education In France by Slytee(m): 2:57pm On May 04, 2016

Najat Belkacem is the first woman and the youngest person at 36 in the history of France to ever make it to Minister of Education. As well as first Muslim. She is also an inspirational figure who shows the world that everything is possible to achieve if we are determined.

We live in a crazy world where people are debating whether immigrants are good for the host country or not. While some are too busy shouting ‪#‎BanMuslims‬ or ‪#‎BanMoroccans‬, Najat Belkacem quietly reminds us that immigrants are valuable asset – and that believing in our children and investing in them with the right character traits and the right education literally means the sky is the limit.

Najat Belkacem became determined to succeed in politics when she observed the rise of Le Pen (France’s Donald Trump) and the right wing in France. She recalls how at her first fundraiser, as she welcomed guests and took their coats many mistook her for the house maid. Today, she’s called “The New Face of France.”

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Najat Belkacem was born in a country side of a small village Bni Chiker, Near Nador in Morocco in 1977. She was the second of her seven siblings.

Her father was lived France and worked as a construction worker. He asked Najat and his family to join him in France. So Najat moved to the Suburbs of Amiens with her family to join her father in 1982. She was an Immigrant by status.

Her interest in politics started from an early age. Her father enrolled her into the institute of political studies in Paris. It was in that in that institute she met the love of her life, Boris Vallaud. She graduated from the Paris institute of political studies in 2002, and married Borris Vallaud in August 2005.

In 2002, she joined the Socialist Party and then the team of Lyon Mayor Gerard Collomb in 2003, leading actions to strengthen local democracy, fight against discrimination, promotion of citizen rights and access to employment and housing.

Elected to the Regional Council of Rhone-Alpes in 2004, she chaired the Culture Commission, resigning in 2008. In 2005, she became adviser to the Socialist Party. In 2005 and 2006 she was a columnist for the cultural programme C’est tout vu on Télé Lyon Municipale alongside Stéphane Cayrol. In February 2007, she joined Ségolène Royal’s campaign team as a spokeswoman, alongside Vincent Peillon and Arnaud Montebourg.

In March 2008, she was elected conseillère générale of the Rhône department in the cantonal elections with 58.52% of the votes in the second round, under the banner of the Socialist Party in the canton of Lyon-XIII.

On 16 May, 2012, she was appointed to French President François Hollande’s cabinet as Minister of Women’s Rights and spokeswoman for the government.

And finally on August 25, 2014, she became the first woman and the youngest person ever ( at 36), to be appointed as Minister of Education & Research, in France.

This historical moment was achieved by a muslim, immigrant girl who lived in a village. Najat has proven that there are no boundaries to what you can achieve, if you set your heart on it & work towards it with diligence.

On describing her career advancement she says;

“My path is similar to many young women of my generation. Young women who, like me, have chosen studies to fully exercise a profession, be independent and reach enough responsibility to hope to change society, to make it more just, more caring, more happy.”

Business / Business Lesson From The Story Of ‘A Professional Hunter And His Friend’ by Slytee(m): 12:26pm On May 01, 2016
Strive Masiyiwa posted this story told about a professional hunter who had a friend who always wanted to go with him on one of his hunts. So one day he said to his friend,

“I have a permit to go into the Zambezi Valley and hunt for a buffalo. Would you like to come with me?”

The friend was ecstatic at the opportunity.

“When do we go?” he asked.

“In about six months time, but before then I have to train you about hunting.”

For the next six months, the two men met every day, and they discussed and planned for the trip. The hunter’s friend was surprised by how meticulous the hunter was about everything.

He taught him about the bush, and how to survive in it. He taught him everything about buffaloes.

“You must respect the buffalo,” he said, “because it’s a very intelligent animal, and it is also extremely dangerous.”
He gave him lots of books to read, about hunting and buffaloes.

During that time, the friend also trained every day at the shooting range. He understood by then the different types of guns used to hunt buffalo. He also had to do fitness training, which surprised him.

“You can die out there if you are not fit,” his friend explained.

He was totally astounded by what he was learning about hunting.

“Until now, I thought all you do is just go out and shoot, but now I know there’s more to this than meets the eye!” he exclaimed.

When the day came, the two men set out into the wild bush of the Zambezi Valley, one of the most beautiful places on the earth. It is also inhospitably hot, and the terrain is tough.

They’d been tracking one single animal for 5 days, and the hunter’s friend was totally exhausted. He watched as his friend patiently made meticulous plans every single day. The hunter seamed to take forever, from the point of view of his friend. Sometimes they would walk, and sometimes they would sit for hours. The hunter was always looking around, scanning the bushes, not even (it appeared) always paying attention to the surrounding areas more than the buffalo.

“Why can’t he just shoot and we go home!?”

He was getting tired of this, as they walked almost 50 miles a day. He was also hungry most of the time, as they only ate rations of dried meat and fruit, most of the time. The hunter looked at the animal through his gun sight over and over every day, but wouldn’t take a shot. Sometimes they appeared so close, but he still did not do anything.

It was the fifth day: The animal was in sight again, but the hunter was going through his routine again. The friend sat in the bushes, when suddenly a rabbit appeared in front of him and he thought to himself,

“At least if I shoot this rabbit, we can have meat tonight. I’m tired of dry rations.”

So he pulled out his gun and fired once. The rabbit disappeared, as he had missed anyway, but so did the buffalo, and with it, the entire herd.

The hunter looked at him in total horror and disbelief!

Then he shouted, “Run, or you die!” as he took off.

They almost got stampeded by an entire herd that seemed to appear from nowhere. Also, suddenly there were lions everywhere that he had not seen before! But for the skills of the hunter, who led them both to safety, they could have died.

The buffalo was gone. The hunt was over.

They had to return home, empty-handed.

There are at lots of business lessonsto extract from this story.

Preparation: Planing, preparation and training is the key for anything to be sucessfull. The hunter was able to possess it and actually pass on to his friend. Skills have to be developed and transferable

Awareness : Understand the in and out of your anything you want to do. The hunter was aware of all the issues that could make the hunt a success or failure even though his friend might not have understood and he had a plan for any eventuality even if it meant running. Planning for any eventuality.

Patience: Patience is a virtue, especially in business. The ability to understand that timing is important even with diversions that seem to be right. Delay is never denial but a focus on what is expected.

Rabbit Hunters: Those who seem to have a perfect solution that doesn’t feel righ. Grab and let’s go kind of people. Note that the hunter aimed for a buffallo not a tiny rabbit. Compare the size of a rabbit to a buffalo then you would know why its important to aim high and remain focused no matter what comes your way. Don’t let others distract you from your goal with short cuts.

Tolerance: Being a friend is not limited to only good times or how it benefits you. The hunter still made sure they both came home from the hunt even though empty handed. The friend would be better prepared for the next hunt.

Nairaland / General / There’s Much To Admire From The Humble Life Of The Richest Man In Europe, Amanci by Slytee(m): 3:16pm On Mar 18, 2016

The story of Zara founder Amancio Ortega is like a dream. Who could ever imagine a young boy, at the age of 16 from a non-wealthy family could be one of the richest men in the europe today.

When you hear the names Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, you instantly know that they are two of the wealthiest men in the world. But do you know the name Amancio Ortega? Chances are, you probably don’t know the man, but you’re aware of the clothing retail company he founded, Zara.

What makes the Spanish multibillionaire so interesting isn’t the fact that he briefly topped Bill Gates as the richest man in the world–it’s his amazing rags-to-riches success story.

At the age of 16, Ortega decided that he could start a company and make real money. By actually really selling things. Compete with his competitors by giving customers exactly what they wanted, quickly instead of buying up inventory and hoping it would sell. A total new business model with an impressive supply chain. In 1975, he opened his first store, and 10 years later his first international store in Portugal.

His story is like a fairytale and we can definitely learn about eight life lessons from Mr. Ortega’s approach.

1. He Don’t Live ‘Life of the Party’
There’s a misconception that successful people have to be extroverts. While networking is part of an entrepreneur’s responsibilities, introverts can be just as, if not more, successful.

Ortega is a known recluse and has spoken very little to the press during his career. However, despite not being the life of the party, he has been able to accumulate a net worth that is estimated at more than $74 billion. Just as Gates, Buffett, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Abraham Lincoln have also shown, introverts like Ortega can be successful because they are better listeners, are more willing to collaborate, and can be more creative.

2. He Was Humble And Modest
It’s been reported that Ortega visits the same coffee shop every day, has lunch with his employees, and, despite being the man behind Zara, dresses modestly in the same blue blazer, white shirt, and gray pants.

Being successful in life doesn’t mean that you can’t still be humble and modest. In fact, having those traits can be extremely beneficial for both your professional and personal lives. Humility has been found to help us cope better with anxiety, become better leaders and workers, have more self-control, and be more willing to help others.

3. Humble And Modest, But He Still Enjoy the Flashy Things
Though humble and modest, Ortega is still able to enjoy himself. He rides horses, and even owns an equestrian center in Finisterre, Spain. He also owns an Audi A8 luxury sedan.

If you can afford that luxury item or vacation, and it’s something that you value, then you shouldn’t feel any guilt about spending that money. It’s OK to splurge every now and then, just like Ortega, because it can actually make you happy.

4. He Never Forgot His Roots
One of the most interesting things about Ortega is that he never really left home. He built the Zara empire in his hometown of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. This is important, because being close to home helped Ortega remember his roots. And that helped drive the success of Zara, according to Xabier R. Blanco, co-author of the book Amancio Ortega: From Zero to Zara. “Poverty clearly made him who he is,” says Blanco.

5. It’s Never Too Late To Be Successful
Sometimes we are led to believe that you have to be successful at an early age, much like Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. But Ortega was almost 40 years old when he founded Zara. While that’s not ancient by most standards, it’s not your typical twenty- or thirtysomething millionaire story. It’s refreshing to know that it’s never too late for you to achieve your dreams and ambitions like Ortega did.

6. He Had A Purpose And Knows What Drives him
Around the age of 13, Ortega witnessed his mother’s getting rejected for credit at a grocery store. The realization of his family’s poverty was a driving force for Ortega. He left school immediately and began working so that he and his family would never be put in that situation again.

Sometimes we forget why we wake up every morning and sit in traffic for hours, or why we left a cushy job to launch a startup that is on the brink of failure. Remembering why you make those sacrifices is what forces us to achieve our goals and dreams.

7. Good Things Only Come To Those Who Wait
It took a decade for Ortega to found Zara’s holding company Inditex and open his first shop. Today, Inditex is one of the world’s biggest fashion groups.

Even though 10 years may seem like an eternity when establishing a business, it clearly paid off. Being patient gives you the chance to wait, watch, and know when to act in all aspects of your life. Instead of acting inappropriately or irrationally, with patience you can step back, regroup, and make the best decision possible.

8. He Did It His Own Way
You don’t always have to do what everyone else is doing. Ortega doesn’t have to eat lunch with his employees, but he chooses to have that connection. He opted not to have a big, corner office. Instead, he was on the floor with designers. And, according to economic historian Carlos Rodriguez Braun:

“Without any favourable conditions, in a sector that relies on invention yet restricts creativity, he decided to fight to the top relying on pure innovation. He found a great balance between quality and price, shortened the shelf life of his product by speeding up the design process, selected prime locations for his stores and extended their operating hours, and all of this was done with the goal of attracting the casual shopper. He made it all happen.”

Ortega did things his way rather than follow in the footsteps of fashion industry leaders in Paris, Milan, or New York. That decision clearly paid off. And it’s a great example of success achieved through following and trusting your intuition.

Nairaland / General / She Begged On Streets So That She Could Feed Every Orphan Came Across by Slytee(m): 9:50pm On Mar 17, 2016

When she was nine months pregnant, She faced an adverse situation in her life and Struggled to survive. The circumstances she has faced could force anyone to lose courage and succumb to the adverse situations. But Sindhutai emerged stronger with every difficulty she faced and became a ‘heroic mother’ to over 1400 homeless children when she herself was in a hand-to-mouth situation!

Sindhutai Sapkal is much more than just a name. The 68-year-old lady have many stories behind her strong personality. Full of energy and passion, Sindhutai is commonly referred to as “Mother of Orphans” and as she talks about her life and her children you can see the pain, the troubles and the miseries she has faced and overcome with her hard work during her life time. But, from all the emotions you see on her face, an unusual sense of confidence, which she has derived over the years through her experience, is something you get inspired from.

“I am there for all those who have no one,” she says with a lot of affection. You can see flashes of her life as she talks about her journey and how she became the “mother”. Being an unwanted child, she was nicknamed “Chindhi” which means a torn piece of cloth.

Though her father supported her and was keen on educating her, she could not continue her studies after fourth grade due to family responsibilities and early marriage.

The 68-year-old Sindhutai’s story is all about love, compassion and devotion as she has dedicated her life to the orphans.

Born on born on 14 November, 1948 at Pimpri Meghe village in Wardha district of Maharashtra, she was keen on completing her education and used Bharadi tree leaves to write as the family could not afford a slate. Her early marriage put an end to her desire to study.

“I was told there are only two processions in a woman’s life; once when she gets married and the other when she dies. Imagine my state of mind when they took me in a procession to my husband’s home in Navargaon forest in Wardha,” she says.

At the age of nine, she was married to a man with the age difference of 21 years. Her husband was a 30-year-old cattle-herder, who would often beat her for no reasons. At the age 20, she was deserted by her husband and thrown out of the house with her nine-months pregnancy. She gave birth to a baby girl in a cow shelter outside their house that same day and walked a few kilometres in that condition to her mother’s place, who refused to give shelter.

“I cut the umbilical cord with a sharp-edged stone lying nearby,” she recalls. The incident deeply affected her and she thought of committing suicide, but gave up that thought and started begging at railway platforms for food to look after her daughter.

As she spent more time begging, she realized that there are many orphans and children abandoned by their parents. Having faced the difficulties herself, she could feel their pain and she decided to adopt them. She started begging more earnestly in order to feed the many children that she had adopted. Gradually she decided to adopt every child who came across as an orphan and, over a period of time, she emerged as the “mother of orphans”.

“When I was out myself on the streets begging for food and fighting for survival each day, I realized that there are so many orphans who have nobody to go to. I decided to take care of them and raise them as my own,” Sindhutai says.

Till date she has adopted and nurtured over 1,400 orphans, helped them get an education, got them married and supported them to settle down in life. She is fondly referred to as “mai” (mother). The children are not given up for adoption. She treats them as her own and some of them are now lawyers, doctors and engineers.

To eliminate the feeling of partiality among children she gave away her biological daughter to Shrimant Dagdu Sheth Halwai, Pune. Her daughter herself runs an orphanage today.

Sindhutai with her love and compassion has gathered a huge family of 207 sons-in-law, 36 daughters-in-law and over 1000 grandchildren. Till date she continues to fight for the next meal. She does not take support from anyone but still gives speeches to earn her daily bread and butter.

“By God’s grace I had good communication skills. I could go and talk to people and influence them. Hunger made me speak and this became my source of income. I give many speeches at various places and this gets me some money which I use to take care of my children,” she says.

Many years after being abandoned by her husband, he came back to her and apologized for his harsh deeds. Having devoted all her life to the orphans, she forgave him and accepted him as her child, as she could only harbour motherly love for all. She affectionately introduces her 80-year old husband as the eldest child.

For her immense courage and compassion she has received over 500 awards. Whatever amount she received as awards, she used it to construct homes for her children. The construction is still going on and she is constantly looking for more help across the globe to give shape to her dreams.

She has six organizations operating under her name which work for various needs of orphans. “I had no one with me, everyone abandoned me. I knew the pain of being alone and unwanted. I didn’t want anyone to go through the same. And I feel immense pride and pleasure to see some of my children doing so well in their lives. One of my children made a documentary on my life,” she says.

Romance / She Tells Grandma That She Was Cheated On, Grandma Tells Her To Do This by Slytee(m): 7:18pm On Feb 27, 2016

A young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her – her husband had cheated on her and she was devastated. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as soon as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, ‘Tell me what you see.’

‘Carrots, eggs, and coffee,’ she replied.

Her grandmother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The grandmother then asked the granddaughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.

Finally, the grandmother asked the granddaughter to sip the coffee. The granddaughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The granddaughter then asked, ‘What does it mean, grandmother?’

Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

“Which are you?” she asked her granddaughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity? Do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain.. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level?

How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

This is a good lesson for all of us, no matter what stage of life you’re in. You’ll see what I mean.

The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

May we all be like the COFFEE.

Nairaland / General / Would You Risk Your Life For Another Like This Man? by Slytee(m): 3:44pm On Feb 08, 2016

There are lots of stories about people who risk there life to save another. The story of William Kyle Carpenter is one of them.

William Kyle Carpenter better known as Kyle Carpenter, was 19 years old when he enlisted in the Marine Corps delayed entry program. In July 2010 at the age of 21 and rank of Lance Corporal, he was deployed to Afghanistan.

November 21st was the day Carpenter would show immense courage in the face of death by staring at his fears right in the face and taking them with faith. Carpenter threw himself on a live enemy grenade to protect the life of fellow marine Lance Corporal Nick Eufrazio.

Eufrazio whom he tried to save, suffered a traumatic brain injury in the explosion. His skull had to be rebuilt and there was damage to his frontal lobe. Doctors told him he would never speak again but two years after the injury, he is now talking.

As for Carpenter who was the hero of the day, his injuries covered a more extensive range of his body. The explosion left Carpenter with broken bones in his face, a missing right eye, damage to his right arm, shrapnel wounds, a depressed skull fracture that required brain surgery, a collapsed right lung, and the loss of a third of his lower jaw.

This is what Carpenter said after the incedence:

“My body was torn apart by an enemy hand grenade … upon arriving at Camp Bastion, I was labeled P.E.A. — patient expired on arrival. I flat-lined at Walter Reed. The enemy killed me. I came back.”
After spending two and a half years in the hospital and 40 surgeries later, Carpenter’s condition was on the way to recovery.

He was recognized by recieving the Purple Heart Medal, “awarded to members of the armed forces who are wounded by an instrument of war at the hands of the enemy.” He also received the highest military honor in the USA.

On June 19th, Carpenter became the eighth living recipient of the Medal of Honor presented to him at the White House by personally by President Obama. This is awarded to those who showed personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.

Carpenter was just getting started on his journey of recovery five years after the incident. Being a man of honout, he has run marathons in honor of fellow veterans and those who have given their lives for others. He’s gone skydiving and is spending time with family and friends. He was given a second chance at life and he isn’t letting any of it go to waste.

Carpenter enrolled in school at the University of South Carolina for International Studies after retiring as corporal due to his wounds. He has transformed since the accident, not only physically, but with life experiences and moments he gets to cherish after he was so close to death.

Carpenter has become an advocate for wounded servicemen and women, as well as a motivational speaker.

“I’m still here and kicking and, you know, I have all my limbs so you’ll never hear me complain.”
Carpenter continues to live his life to its absolute fullest, and touching lives.

YOU SEE
There are many ways we show bravery and courage. It could be by standing up for yourself or another person or by fighting for what you believe in. Like this young man who showed bravery AND courage by putting his life on the line to save that of a comrade.

Yeah…Some would be saying “its his duty as a marine”

The question is, whatever situation you are in, duty or not, can you knowingly put yourself in a position that could humiliate you, torture you, or even kill you to save another persons life?

Bravely is staring at your fears right in the face and taking them on with the faith that you will come out on top is true courage and bravery.

Business / Protecting The Root Of Your Business by Slytee(m): 2:41pm On Feb 07, 2016

A young man and his father were watching a huge fire coming down from the hills towards their family vineyard. At first, the young man tried to organize buckets of water but it was clear that the fire would engulf everything and consume the vineyard. Then to his surprise he saw the old father pick up an axe and run towards the vines. Systematically he began to cut the vines, leaving only the roots.

“We must protect the root, my son. Do as I show you.”

And with this they saved a business that was several generations old.

You see, every business has a root, and you must know that root. You must be able to protect that root, when things are tough. Sometimes protecting that root looks cruel, but you must protect it at all costs. Sometimes it can come down to reducing activity to the bare minimum, with just a handful of staff. Your most valuable resource will always be good people.

There’s no successful entrepreneur who does not know what I’m talking about. It may well be one of the most difficult things you’ll ever do.

* Stay very clear about who you are and what business you’re in.

* Don’t underestimate the crisis.

* Make sure you’re looking at credible data.

* Manage with grace under pressure.

* Review and revise your game plan as needed, acknowledging which plans aren’t working.

* Decide what you need to do in order to get where you want to go.

* Tackle the problems systematically. Don’t throw kerosene onto a fire.

* Don’t get distracted; make the tough decisions that you need to, without delay. One bucket of water won’t save a hectare of crisis.

* Seek and value professional advice.

* Don’t be afraid to try something new. Crisis is often how great innovation begins. (When the going gets tough, don’t give up on new growth!)

* Lead with courage and vision, even if your heart is sad.

Don’t panic. Pray and plan.

Health / Woman Ordered A Pizza Through 911 Emergency Call , It Saved Her Life! by Slytee(m): 3:53pm On Oct 14, 2015

We all know for a fact that the 911 emergency is really helpful in terms of emergency calls. But what if you are already in an emergency situation, but you couldn’t tell the 911 what’s happening because someone’s with you, what would you do?

Well, this woman has done the strangest thing to tell the 911 that she’s stuck in an emergency.

Here’s their conversation:

“911, where is your emergency?”
“123 Main St.”
“Ok, what’s going on there?”
“I’d like to order a pizza for delivery.” (oh great, another prank call).
“Ma’am, you’ve reached 911”
“Yeah, I know. Can I have a large with half pepperoni, half mushroom and peppers?”
“Ummm…. I’m sorry, you know you’ve called 911 right?”
“Yeah, do you know how long it will be?”
“Ok, Ma’am, is everything ok over there? Do you have an emergency?”
“Yes, I do.”
“..And you can’t talk about it because there’s someone in the room with you?” (moment of realization)
“Yes, that’s correct. Do you know how long it will be?”
“I have an officer about a mile from your location. Are there any weapons in your house?”
“Nope.”
“Can you stay on the phone with me?”
“Nope. See you soon, thanks”

As soon as the call dispatched, the officers immediately checked the history of the address only to find out that there have been multiple previous violence calls.

The officer claimed that the strategy that the woman used was quite clever, just to tell them that she’s been beaten up by her boyfriend, she pretended she’s ordering a pizza!

Literature / Two Brothers Building Bridges by Slytee(m): 6:51pm On Oct 11, 2015

Once there were two brothers who lived on neighboring farms that fell into conflict. It was the first serious dilemma in about 40 years of farming adjacent to each other, they are always sharing equipment, and interchange labor and goods as needed without a hindrance.

Then the long relationship fell apart. It began with a small mistake and it cultivated into a major difference, and finally it burst into an interchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

Early one morning there was a knock on the elder brother’s door. He went to see who was at door he saw a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “Good Morning Sir I’m seeking employment for a few days” he replied. Do you have any task you would like to get done?

“Possibly you would have a few minor jobs for me to do. “Maybe you can,” the elder brother answered. “I think I am able to hire you. Do you see that farm across the creek? It belongs to my neighbor, in fact, it’s my younger brother. A few days ago there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us. Perhaps, he may have done so to get revenge, but I plan to get back at him. See that stack of lumber curing by the barn? I want you to construct a fence – an 8-foot fence – so I won’t need to see his place anymore. Calm him down, anyhow.”

The carpenter answered “I think I comprehend the situation. Please give me some nails and a post-hole digger and I’ll be able to do a project that satisfies you.”

The older brother had to go to town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get the tools organized and headed for town. The carpenter worked hard that day measuring, sawing, nailing, do his best to complete the project before the older brother arrived home. At sunset when the farmer arrived, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer could not believe what he was seeing; his jaw fell open. Instead of a fence there was a bridge… a bridge stretching from one end of the creek to the other end! A fine piece of work banisters and all – and the neighbor, his younger brother, were coming across the newly constructed bridge.

“You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.” Both brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then simultaneously they stepped at the bridge and met at the middle, taking each other’s hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder. “Please stay a few days. I have many other projects for to tackle,” responded the older brother.

“I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but, I have many more bridges to construct.”
