Politics / Jose Antonio Ocampo Ends World Bank Bid & Backs Okonjo-Iweala by strangerf: 8:03am On Apr 14, 2012

(Reuters) - Former Colombian finance minister Jose Antonio Ocampo on Friday withdrew his candidacy for World Bank president, leaving two candidates in a race that he said had turned highly political.

With the World Bank board meeting on Monday to pick a new president, Ocampo said he hoped emerging market nations would rally behind one candidate, Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Okonjo-Iweala is now the sole candidate from developing nations in a race against U.S. nominee Jim Yong Kim, a Korean-American health expert who appears almost certain to win the post.

Ocampo said his candidacy had been "handicapped" by a lack of support from his own country.

"It is clear that the process is shifting from a strict merit-based competition, in which my candidacy stood on strong grounds, into a more political-oriented exercise," he said in a statement.

"In this process, I stand on weaker grounds due to the lack of open support from the government of my home country, Colombia," he added.

Ocampo said he did not believe the selection process had been fully open, transparent and merit-based, but it had established a strong precedent for future elections.

However, Ocampo's decision to leave the race does not mean all developing countries will support Okonjo-Iweala in a straw poll on Monday when the World Bank board tries to find consensus on a successor to Robert Zoellick, who is departing in June.

Indeed, the promise of a united front from emerging markets evaporated on Friday when Russia said it would support Kim, becoming the first major emerging economy to do so.

"Taking into account Mr. Kim's considerable professional qualities as well as his experience and knowledge, the Russian Federation will support the candidacy of Jim Yong Kim during the voting by the bank's board of directors," the Russian Finance Ministry said in a statement.

With their candidates, emerging market nations are seeking to challenge U.S. leadership at the bank to increase their influence in global economic institutions long controlled by rich nations.

Under a informal agreement, the World Bank has always been headed by an American and the IMF by a European.

While Kim is still the favorite to win the World Bank presidency because of his backing from the United States and European countries, a rigorous challenge from emerging market countries could put them in a stronger position to extract concessions favorable to their interests. It also increases their odds of winning senior jobs in the future.

The final decision could come down to political horse-trading and alliances.

afam4eva: Doesn't sokoto get allocations just like every state in the federation? What do they use their allocation for, that will warrant the FG doing what is supposed to be the perogative of sokoto state.

Stupiddd question:

You know the FG account has what they call special fund for stuff like this? Since the state cant/unable/decided not to do it, dont you think the FG is doing the right thing by stepping in to take control of the situation?

This is a matter of national security which is strictly the purview of the central government. . . No?

The truth is that more is on the way.

Of course, in true Indian spirit, why "steal" little, when you can take everything? I agree they will build more and render more people jobless, and then there will be chaos because there will be more kidnappers than people able to shop in those "high-end" malls.

We are hustling for more and will get much more.

Unless your last name is Patel, there is no "we" here. You are as much a spectator as the people whose jobs have just been replaced by computers & foreign sourced staple foods.

I don't know whether you can show me a mall like this one in Okitipupa your home town. hehe!

In due time, we will have them. We believe in cautious industrialization and gradual empowerment of our own people. Sending our hard earned money to Delhi isnt something we are particularly thrilled or enthusiastic about. I dont begrudge your new found pride. . . it is a marathon, only the thoughtful will eventually emerge victorious

Single mums can never find love again. The OP specifically can NEVER find love again, trust me. Politics / Re: Please Vote To Choose The Leaders Of Egbe Omo Odua On NL - Yorubas Only! by strangerf: 2:12am On Apr 08, 2012
Katsumoto: There are many issues that need to be tackled in Odualand such as Education, Infrastructure, Security, moral decadence, etc. Given that most people know about these issues, how will having an Oba on NL help tackle these issues? Will the Oba have the ear of the powers that be? Maybe, otherwise what’s the point? Nevermind that most of the real Obas are not even concerned about the welfare of their subjects.

I believe that forums such as this can be used to discuss issues and potential solutions suggested by all who have the interest of Odua at heart. If there are those who are close to governors, senators, etc, then perhaps you can suggest to them to visit NL and read the views of well meaning individuals. There was a thread (I believe it was started by Ekt Bear) about whats next for the SW; there were a lot of suggestions on that thread especially about infrastructure development.

Odualand was almost destroyed by Obasanjo’s PDP; now the ACN is in power and is struggling to articulate a vision for most of the states in the SW. Save for Fashola, the rest are struggling. Aregbesola is wasting precious time attacking Mimiko for not being in ACN; Amosun is wasting time criticizing Daniel. Fayemi is about to waste funds building a new governors lodge. I am not even sure what Ajimobi is doing. ACN is not doing a good job as the opposition; it is criticizing everything PDP is doing wrong instead of finding strategic issues to shout about.

Tinubu has done well in getting rid of OBJ but it is time for Tinubu to demonstrate his love of Odualand. It is time for the ACN to imbibe and inculcate the spirit of fairness and democracy as espoused the AG in the 1st Republic. I believe that the ACN should adopt the [s]political ideology of democratic socialism[/s] as practiced by the AG in the 50s and 60s. If Tinubu is unable to articulate a proper vision, then he should step aside for someone else, maybe Fashola. Getting rid of PDP is not enough.

Rant over

Ode oshi. . . Democratic socialism is an economic ideology; at least, in principle, it is more economic than political. The AG of Awolowo actually supported/espoused social democracy. He envisioned a capitalist system, with some social reforms, such as the welfare state, intended to make it more equitable and humane. He termed it "cautious industrialization." Democratic socialism is something else entirely. One would think an overly pretentious, mixed race, self appointed custodian of Yoruba thoughts, history & ideology like you would know the difference . . . oh well,
