True, we get excited about God when circumstances are delightful, when the weather invigorates us, bills are paid, the medical check-up goes fine, and nobody is holding anything over our heads. When things are good, God is good. If things are bad, then God is off in Tasmania, taking care of little devils, or in the Middle East setting the stage for Armageddon.

We are so prone to let our circumstances – whether good or bad – dictate our view of God. But time and again the Bible tells us that God is faithful. He is not just a faithful God but the faithful God. He is the same steadfast and good Father yesterday, today, and forever. Scripture alone should be our frame of reference for who the Lord really is, for circumstances do not a good theology make.

Remember this lesson the next time you are quick to tell God how wonderful He is on a golden morning or a peaceful fireside evening. Whether the day is grand or gloomy, every day is a great day to give praise to God. * * * * *

God has given us many good gifts. Gifts of health, food, work, friends, and especially the gift of Himself. His gifts to us overflow in abundance, meeting our needs far more than we realize. There are two things, however, that God has not given us.

One is vengeance. God says in so many words, "Vengeance belongs to me and me alone." He is reminding us to keep hands off when it comes to backbiting or evening the score. You may say that vengeance is sweet, but God says,"Vengeance is mine."

God has good reasons for warning you against getting even or retaliating against a friend. He knows that revenge can too easily infect ;you with anger, resentment, or a spirit of bitterness. He also wants you to know that it is not your place to judge and condemn another person. Leave judgment to God.

How wonderful to think, though, that one day on the other side of eternity, we who are saints will judge the world with the Lord Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:2). Until that time, leave in God's hands what is rightfully His. Vengeance is the Lord's, not yours.

Judge of all the world, I am so grateful that You have given to me so many beautiful gifts - all things are mine, and I acknowledge that I have enough. I do not want a spirit of revenge, for vengeance is Yours and Yours alone. Forgive me for retaliating against people around me. I leave judgment to You until that day when You will invite all the saints to judge the world in righteousness and truth.

I once visited a friend in a nursing home who was feeling depressed about conditions there. When I wheeled into her room, I noticed she was discouraged. I also noticed a plaque over her bed: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I asked a few questions to help her open up. "You wouldn't believe the rotten care I receive," she said. "These people aren't tending to my problems and the nurses don't turn me properly at night."

After quite a while, it was my turn. I suggested ideas such as talking to the nursing supervisor together, or raising money to purchase a better mattress. I suggested we write a letter to the nurse's council, or post a notice over her bed stating clearly how my friend wanted to be turned at night. We could confront her doctor with a second opinion on her health problems. We could get her family involved. Lots of things!

But with every suggestion, my friend shook her head "no." After hearing thirty minutes of excuses, I decided to talk straight. I motioned to the plaque and said, "You know, in the last six months you've been going a great job of accepting the things you cannot change. You've lain in this bed and stuck it out without causing a ruckus. But now you need more work on the second part of that prayer. You, my friend, need courage to change the things you can."

There is great honor in embracing trials, but remember that God gives them to create change. * * * * *

God, give me the courage to change the things I should. And give me the wisdom to accept the things that You don't want changed.
