Food / Shiro Lagos : An Oriental Trip (restaurant Review) by TheChocolateore: 3:40pm On Dec 14, 2021
READ FULL POST: https://www.thechocolateoreo.com/shiro-lagos-restaurant-review/

If there’s one thing I love more than good food, it’s great ambience and Shiro Lagos never fails to take my breath away, so here’s another restaurant review.

I took a trip down (trip because I had to go across Third Mainland Bridge, lol) to my favourite oriental restaurant in Lagos recently, and this time, I’m back with an updated restaurant review.

Entry
Shiro Lagos Restaurant Review: The Chocolate Oreo
If there’s one thing I love about Shiro, it’s their attention to detail. I know we’re still in the middle of a pandemic and restaurant reservations are the in-time, but I have to admit that I forget to make them all the time.

What’s fun about Shiro is walk-in dining is an actual thing, and they go the extra mile in their COVID protocols. So at entry, you’d have to register your dining party and fill a small survey on your health, so they have records on who comes in.

As usual, you’d need to come in wearing a mask, which you can then take off at your table while dining.

Ambience
Yes! Every time I walk in Shiro, it never gets old for me. I love the high rise ceilings, properly set tables and of course, my personal favourite; the Egyptian statues (we’re not going to talk about this today, lmao!)

Food
We decided to go on a splurge ordering more food than we usually do this time because it was a larger crowd. Oh! I should also mention that we didn’t plan our meals beforehand, so ordering this time was an adventure.

Fashion / An Expert Guide On The Dos And Don’ts Of Sunscreen In Skincare by TheChocolateore: 10:17am On Apr 25, 2021
https://www.access24.news/an-expert-guide-on-the-dos-and-donts-of-sunscreen-in-skincare/

Everyone talks about using sunscreen but not many people talk about the dos and don’ts of using sunscreen in skincare.

Being sun kissed is excellent for your selfies, but the sun itself has a damaging impact on the skin. UV rays from the sun are known causes of skin problems like cancer, wrinkles and fine lines. This is why it is important that you keep your skin safe from the sun at all times using sunscreen.

SPF or sunscreen is an everyday essential, whether in dry or cold weather, because the sun never takes a break, and you shouldn’t. Spending so much money on skincare would go to waste without a protective barrier, ensuring that the active ingredients are kept safe while they work.

However, when it comes to sun protection, questions arise, including what formula is best and how much sunscreen should you apply.

Politics / Twitter HQ: Why Ghana Came First Over Nigeria by TheChocolateore: 12:28pm On Apr 23, 2021
The Nigerian Federal Government’s claim that negative media representation is responsible for why Twitter chose Ghana over Nigeria for its African office is untrue in several ways.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammed, speaking on this “snub “, has blamed the media for painting a terrible image of the country. Speaking, he said, “This is what you get when you de-market your own country. Nigerian journalists were…painting Nigeria as a hell where nobody should live.” Lai Mohammed’s claim only represents the blame-shifting and denial associated with the current government.

In fact, the country’s failing investment climate is a great reason why foreign investors opt to grow anywhere but in Africa’s largest nation. In reality, other African nations, including Ghana, have thrived beyond Nigeria, creating a much more suitable business and investment climate that allows businesses to thrive, attracting continental and global businesses. This adequate environment has served as a welcoming environment for businesses who have left Nigeria to thrive outside the suffocating operating environment the country had offered them.

This is not the first time Nigeria has been snubbed as a location for an African headquarter. In 2018, reports had stated that Google planned to open an artificial research centre, the first of its kind in Africa in Ghana. Ghana’s quality of education, its political stability, and its thriving investment are reasons why Ghana was considered first. Between 2006 and 2008, local industries within Nigeria had also relocated, including Michelin and Dunlop, Nigeria’s two tyre manufacturers. Retail chains, Woolworths, Truworths and Mr Price, have also excited Nigeria in the last few years. Businesses are not the only group to leave Nigeria as Nigerians themselves are immigrating as fast as they can out of the nation.

As such, Nigeria’s snub by investors is sad but unexpected; however, the federal government fails to come to terms with this. A survey by the World Bank Enterprise reports that between 2009 and 2014, 322 private firms closed in Nigeria for reasons attributed to corruption and stifling business regulations. MAN also reported that 196 manufacturing companies had shut down in Nigeria between 2015 and 2017 during the President Buhari-led administration.

Politics / Lekki Shooting: Lagos Government Moves To Reopen Tollgate by TheChocolateore: 11:58am On Apr 23, 2021
Six months after the Lekki tollgate shooting, the Lagos state government has kickstarted efforts to reopen the Lekki tollgate.

In February 2021, the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) requested that the Lekki tollgate be reopened to retain its staff and pay pending debits. This appeal was made by the LCC manager Yomi Omomuwasan.

Mr Omomuwasan revealed that the company owed debts in local and international banks up to N11.5 billion and $31 million respectively as at 2020.

“As at 2011, we had a balance of about 24 billion in naira owed to local banks and 49 million dollars owed to an international development bank,” he said.

“Through the operation of the toll progressively, payments are being made. It is on record, the company borrowed money, and we keep mentioning areas where people can verify. They are local banks, Nigerian banks, they have names and have records.”

“There is no way a company can lie that we are owing when they are not owing,” he noted.

The manager speaking further pointed out that the company had been badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and could not make payment during this period.

Mr Omomuwasan also noted that the LCC could not be shut down forever due to the #EndSARS protests.

“There is nowhere in the world where an event happened at a place, and you close it forever,” he said.

On February 6 2020, the Lagos State Judicial Panel had approved calls for the Lekki Tollgate to reopen. Protests by Nigerians to forestall the reopening of the tollgate were met by brutality, and popular comedian Mr Macaroni was also arrested.
The #EndSARS Protests

In October 2020, the #EndSARS movement, which protested against the police brutality of youths in Nigeria, took the nation by storm, with Nigerian youths taking to the streets in a peaceful protest demanding their rights.

These nationwide protests went on for over two weeks, gaining momentum and attracting the attention of both local and international actors.

Several locations were earmarked as gathering points for protesters, one of which was the Lekki-Epe expressway tollgate. While attempting to capture the attention of the Federal and state government, the protesters had barricaded the tollgate, stopping the movement of traffic through and halting the inflow of cash from the tollgate, as they say, “hit them where it hurts the most.”

Food / Cactus Lagos- My Review by TheChocolateore: 2:49pm On Jan 29, 2021
Hello, thank you for choosing to read my review of Cactus Lagos.

2020 has eventually come to an end, and all I can say is finally. I literally breezed through the year being lazy in the middle of a pandemic and burning out.

For this review, I took a trip to Cactus Lagos for a quick date after work.

First of all, can we talk about Cactus Lagos and their waterfront seating arrangement? I love a good body of water, and there’s nothing more I love than being able to have the cool breeze from the water hitting me everywhere while I munch on my meal, so it was impossible not to suggest Cactus for my date.

WALKING-IN

The best thing for me when it comes to dining out post-COVID is the more privacy you get at restaurants. Chairs are now spaced out, and there’s no fear of being too loud, disturbing your neighbours, or wondering if anyone is watching your mouth chew.

I opted to sit indoor, with a glass wall facing the outdoor seating space and also giving me a view of the waterfront. At Cactus Lagos, more impressively, in what I assume is a post COVID arrangement, chairs are now separated by a glass divide adding to the restaurant’s ambience.

I have to confess to not paying attention to the interior and decor of the restaurant. I had a long day already, and all I wanted was to sit and put something in my stomach ASAP.

I also have to note that the waiter was very polite while he directed us to our seats and handed us the menus.

ORDERING
Never to be caught slacking or off guard, I already checked the Cactus Lagos Menu Instagram for their menu, and this made it a lot easier to make a choice even before I got there.

Many people have told me this is too much work for just eating out, but when you are like me and can never make a choice on the spot, you learn a coping mechanism. And for me, it’s scrolling through menus at home to make my meal and drink choices before I get to the restaurants.

Getting to Cactus Lagos, there were menus on the table also, so if you prefer ordering your food on the spot, you’re covered either way.

I ordered the Dynamite Shrimps and a glass of the House Wine. The Dynamite Shrimps was a plate of shrimps wrapped in flour, fried and served on a bed of lettuce covered in cheese.

If you have been an ardent follower of my blog, you’ll remember that I have a problem with wrapped foods.

By wrapped foods, I mean meat or seafood of any kind wrapped in flour, breadcrumbs and then fried.

Unfortunately, I skipped and forgot to ask the waiter if the shrimps I ordered came wrapped, which was an error on my part. A mistake I regretted making but we move yes?

Before my meal came, the waiter served us a basket of bread and mayo; as an appetizer, however, I had to return the basket as I’m not too fond of bread and I rarely eat any.

For this review, I took a trip to Cactus Lagos for a quick date after work, here is my review after dining at Cactus and what to expect.

My waiter was extremely polite; he was around whenever I needed him but didn’t hover around to cause an inconvenience.

THE FOOD
Safe to say Cactus Lagos lived up to their reputation for me. While ordering my food, I was hoping for a well-plated meal that didn’t just look great but also tasted great, and that was precisely what I got.

My meal came served on a white plate, carefully placed on a tray. I was very impressed to note that during the course of moving the meal from kitchen to tray, it didn’t shake one bit.

Now salads are definitely not my most ordered food, but the lettuce my food came in didn’t deter me one bit.

Finally, the cheeeseeee!! Exaggerating this because when I tell you the shrimps were bathed in cheese, they were soaked and bathed, and I loved it.

Food / Best Pasta Restaurants In Lagos- My Review by TheChocolateore: 2:29pm On Jan 29, 2021
When I decided to review some of the best pasta restaurants in Lagos, I decided to do this based on my personal preference.

I absolutely adore seafood pasta; it’s just the idea of shrimps, crabs and prawns mixed into a huge bowl of pasta that does it for me. This is why I felt like a review of the best pasta restaurants in Lagos was necessary.

Since we’re all still trying to social distance with the new strain of COVID-19 I haven’t been going out as much as before, so bear with me reviewing places I have already been.

I have created this list based on my personal preference, affordability, ingredients, presentation and popularity of each restaurant.

In no particular order, here are some of my personal best pasta restaurants in Lagos:

Purple Bistro Lagos
3 University Rd, opposite First City Monument Bank, Yaba, Lagos

When I decided to do a review of some of the best pasta restaurants in Lagos, I realised that lately I have been drawn towards pasta and I almost always order it everytime.

If you know me, you probably know I love a good Purple Bistro moment, and as cliché, as it sounds, I always end up ordering their Seafood Pasta and pairing it with Purple Bistro’s signature Buffalo Wings.

Personally, I love the burst of flavour, and the spiciness of the meal makes it even better. The Purple Bistro Seafood Pasta comes properly cooked with a fair portion of crabs, prawns and vegetables. The plating of the meal is just as appealing as its ingredients and definitely worth an Instagram moment.

I would also recommend ordering the Buffalo wings made in their signature sauce for the extra panache of protein your seafood most definitely needs. So, if you find yourself in the Yaba axis and you feel like a pasta moment, stop by Purple Bistro and tell them I sent you

P.S: I still think it could do with more seafood, especially crabs, and maybe they could consider throwing shrimps into the menu?

Order online HERE

Eric Kayser Lagos
864 Bishop Aboyade Cole Street Victoria Island

Another personal favourite, I would pick the Lasagna at Eric Kayser first before any other pasta dish, and this has to do with the sauce. Not only do I love a good cheese moment, but an additional sauce moment also makes it even better, and Eric Kayser has managed to find a balance between both.

I already reviewed the Eric Kayser Lasagna on my blog, and if you haven’t read that review, you should read it HERE.

The Maison Kayser Lasagna is a plate of Lasagna, Bechamel sauce, asparagus, green beans, carrots, mushrooms, Emmental & mozzarella.

The Maison Kayser Lasagna is plated exquisitely, in a white bowl placed on a wooden tray. Side Note: You might have to be careful finding your way around eating without creating a mess but once you get a system that works for you, stick with it.

PRICE: 4,800 Naira
