This was my post to gab, For some reason I did it as a part of her quote, ooops!

Haha u r so funny! I have a pretty good memory, sometimes lol!! I have, of course, messed it up a bit over the years, lol!! Im very happy to hear its a pretty easy language to learn. I just recently moved back home after living in China for a while, and I must say that mandMandarinby far one of the HARDEST languages to learn. I quickly made friends who could speak englEnglish MandMandarinently. They were my saving grace while there.

I think you are right abt ur techniques for learning. My boyfriend and I recently took a couple trips together, (he for business I just went to hang out with him while he wasnwasn'tking) and when he'd be with his nigeNigerianiness partners and friends speaking yoruba I would notice that I'd sometimes zone out cuz I had no idea what they were saying. Now, what worked is that I am a trained actress, so I'm very good at "acting" (and looking) like I'm listening. (as most men hahaha, jk guys!!) A passpasserby-erld have thought many times I definitely knew what was going on, but didndidn'tl like talking lol! I will keep this in mind next time.

Abt the pidjin, the other day I was talking to his brother on the phone. And while I dont think he was pupopurposelyaking pidgin, Im sure it was slipping in lol!! Cuz I kept going huh, lol! I find it very difficult to understand him sometimes, but not my boyfriend. His brothers wife is half philFilipino half germGerman maybe he is thinking, well she can understand me so you prob can too, lol!! But um, they've been married for a while lol!!!

Ok so yes, I will remember this! Next time everyone is talking, pay attention!!!!! and ask questions!!!, At the right times of course! When I think about it, this is how I learned spanSpanishof course many of my friends are spanSpanishd my 2 best friends first language is spanSpanish I was surrounded by it. Ok I am up for it!!! Let the work begin!!!!!

Oh no sweetie, Im sure he would never move to Nigeria. Hes a New York fashion designer! loL! I just wanted to know how it is VIEWED in Nigeria. My boyfriends family while Christian and doesnt practice this themselves, have had a lot of experience with other countries/cultures and ways of thinking. SO they are are not homophobic, and would never say the horrible things that have been written in here. Though I may never practice this I think its absolutely wrong to write hate mail about a person. This is what bothered me. In my country you could be taken to court for writing such horrible things. While we are all entitled to freedom of speech, if we discriminate against someone its just not taken sitting down. My thing is that I am a christian, and I think we are required to love everyone regardless. This has been an amazing testimony to this guy who has met many "so called" Christians who profess to be followers of Yeshua and act like the devil himself in their speech and the way they deal with those who are in a different place. Thank you!

Hotstepper:

datz jokes, lol, some r true and sum r not, lol
Canadian r just easy ppl and dont fuss or pokenose like Americans,
etc, good nite

Haha yes I'll agree with you on this one!!! they never fuss!! We always do!! haha!!

Great example, One of my very best friends was chief designer for a canadian company (ports international) He had issues with his creative director because she said he was too arrogent and too fabulous. Well, he's an american designer from New York. He was way too fabulous for words, but he was supposed to be. He'd designer for couture houses in NY and some of the top names out there, and they are expected to be flamboyantly fabulous, and well, most are, what they accused him of being, He couldnt take it, and well. He's working on his own collection now.

Moral, Everyone has their cup of tea!! I'm used to cut throat New Yorkers. (The two people Im closest to are) Alrighty, I'm going to bed too now. I have to get up early and kill myself at the gym. Because this dear friend of mine (the evil designer) considers a size two to be overweight (his words are, fat cow, now u see why I'm so evil, my best friend verbally abuses ME!! lol), and he REFUSES to design my wedding dress if I dont drop, hmmm, sad, worst, my nigerian fiance thinks I look great, and tries to make me eat!! You can never please everyone, So just be happy!!! Yay!!! CTAL!!!

Ok so I've stumbled upon this lol!! Um, its very disheartening to read all the hatred towards people who love, One of my vrey best friends is gay. He is in love with a great guy, and they want to be married and have children. (With the eggs of a woman and a surrogate mother of course) But I have to support him. He is one of the best people I have ever met. He is extremely successful, and has an amazing life. I cant imagine telling him he must be miserable and be with a woman when he's clearly not attracted to them. Im just wondering, Are most Nigerians homophobic?? This is something that I'm not going to feel to comfortable with, as I know that I will live in Nigeria someday. I remember I had a convo with my fiance abt this as I thought it may be an issue. I've lived in Africa (of course it was SA where gay marriage is legal) and traveled to many countries there and have noticed the attitude towards gays is not so great. My fiance knows one of my best friends is gay and seems ok with it, but what is the general attitude from most nigerians who have not been exposed to this??

Hotstepper:

@tiffcisco, my 1st question to is "have u gone 2 canada urself"? cuz 4get about what you hear from people cuz ppl tend to be bias.

u call their health care CHEAP ehhh, does US have any?

apart from their cheap health care, CANADA is far beta than US, try visiting dere

a study by the an american sef ranked CANADIAN EDUCATION as the best in NORTH AMERICA, 4GET  US and its ivy league kiniko cuz havard had a debate with Uni. of Ottawa couples of years ago and they bearly survived.

Canad gat lesser skool but all standardized, a whole big TORONTO gat only 3 universities while in US up to 10 in one city, lol

Take a trip dere and only sum1 who is netural and have been to both countries can make a good argument and he/she must have done a good analysis,

Ok um firstly, I have gone, but, wwasn't that impressed. Dad had a meeting, I went, yeah!

Secondly, I think they have fabulous health care. Not cheap as in bad hunnie, cheap as in affordable to all citizens. I have great health care bc I can afford it here. Many cant, and they are not so fortunate when they get sick and have to depend on free government healthcare. I applaud Canada on their health care set up. Of course most of my Canadian friends have additions to scrip drugs, whatever, you win or loose somewhere right?

In regards to school, I had a fabulous education, because I went to one of the best private schools for k-12. Yes, maybe the public schools aren'tas good, but I wouldn't know bc I didn'tgo!! Also, the law students at the university I attended beat out the Harvard law students as well, hmmm, maybe Harvard is slipping, owww, What were ur other points um ya!! I wouldn't trade my citizenship for anything, And people are trying with all their might to get in here everyday. Not to be cocky cuz I tend to live in other countries, Just stating the obvious! Dont be silly, or you will be served! Cheers thanks a lot sweetie Thank you!!! Oh um, where do you live, thank you!

awwww. . . Thanks girl  grin kiss So uhm,  . U're dating a Naija guy? well, actually yoruba is quite easy to learn provided you have a very good memory. my case, I really have a very bad memory so I only talk Yoruba when I have the mood to remember. heheh! grin  Uhm. . . I guess the only way to learn how to speak Yoruba is to mix around with Nigerians whom speaks in Yoruba and just pay very close attention to the words which they are speaking. Remember it and when you have the opportunity one day, go and ask them what does it means. And then they will tell you and if they are in the mood, they will teach you more than what you ask. Remember to spend them food and drink after that  tongue like guys. . . Most of them always wants beer. But not all. Than whenever you have any opportunities to use the sentences which you have learn, you use it to the extreme and keep using it untill its in your head. If possible, ask them about the spelling as well so that when you come in here to nairaland and you have the opportunity to use the sentences, you use it and it will stay in your memory forever. grin

Thats what I do. when a group of people speak a completely in a different language and you happen to be there, never ignore their conversation even if you dont understand or they are not talking to you. Always listen attentively and try to grab phrases. And also by doing that, you'll be very surprise that you might be able to actually understand what they are talking! Thats how intelligent the human brain can be.

before I get attacked, lol! I did LOVE living in China while I was there, and it can be a land of opp in many cases. I was in no way bringing down china, I will return many times to see all the fab people I grew to love there. I was just pointing out that when we leave a place (like poland) that doesn't offer much, and go somewhere that seems to have it all, we close in and think it the end all be all,

That said, To the poster, I know nothing abt immigrating to Canada. I have helped some friends get here. Each case is diff of course. All the best to you on ur endeavour!!!

Cheers!

hi ijaw girl,

really lol how?? I've never heard this before, except maybe from a person who moved to Canada from a place that wasn't so great and sees it somehow as the "land of opportunity." (I had a polish friend say this abt china, well, she moved from poland, so ya it was to her, )
Anyway, I have fam that lives in Canada (not much) and a few friends of course from there. My aunt had to move to there a long time ago bc of her ex husband, but they don't like it too much, just never moved back I guess. Perhaps its the cheap healthcare lol!! I wouldn't want to live there. Culture is totally diff. Are you originally from Canada?? Which part?? and Where did u live in the US? Just wondering? Im sure that has something to do with ur reasoning behind ur idea that Canada's far better wink

Family / Re: Parental Guide: Bringing Up A Child by tiffcisco(f): 10:43pm On Mar 24, 2009
Hi,

I thought I'd ask a question on here. Are spankings very common in Nigeria? I would assume so. I am just wondering as I am American and my fiance is Nigerian. I know we will live in Nigeria. In my family there were a necessity. If my parents didn't spank me, I'm sure I would have turned out to be quite the little terror. My fiance is the most patient and calm man I've met, but I'm sure he does believe in spanking, though we have not discussed this too much. Just wondering is it common practice. Or have they jumped on the silly notion that children can be disciplined and never have to be spanked. Also, just wondering, Sistawoman, are you American?? I think so, but just wondering, lol!! I really enjoy reading all of your posts!!

top up I don't think she wants to stop loving it lol!! Shes making a statement, about HOW MUCH SHE LOVES IT!!!! Some people are drawn to cultures which is a very good thing!! Im the same way!! Its a gift, and a curse haha!! (Monk, smile!) U sound very interesting Gab! I think its cool u can relate so well, and u really speak pidgin well! I cant really understand it, well more when reading it than when listening. I suppose I might try, but the Nigerians I know don't use it as much. They tend to just speak Yoruba when they are together, which I REALLY don't understand, but my bf wants me to learn, and I think I should so he can never sell me in Nigeria lol!! JK I just want to! Any ideas of how to learn in the US in a very non Naija area?? A course I suppose hmm, lol!!
