barcanista: My friend you are a lying preeeeeeek. Nigeria CANNOT have Trade surplus because her imports Overwhelms her export. It's a very simple economics, one doesn't need to be an economic guru to understand this. Nigeria is on Trade Deficit!!!!!!!!!! nigeria had been enjoying trade surplus since the oil boom days. last year, the value of our export was $95 billion(mainly oil and gas) while the value of our import was $75 billion. so nigeria had a trade surplus of $20 billion in 2013. however the naira does not really benefit from the trade surplus because we are paid with dollars as far as the oil we sell is concerned. the international buyers do not need to seek for naira to exchange for dollars. they simply pay in foreign denominations. 1 Like |

GeneralShepherd: All the BRIC countries (Brazil,Russia, India and China) have no respect for human rights. the above is the summary. bric countries dont respect labour or human right laws. u dont xpect their companies to do otherwise. the truth is their own citizens are treated worse. the average salary of an indian factory worker is #15,000/ month, in bangladesh- the largest producer of textiles products- its #6,000. in china u're very lucky to earn #30,000 in a month. there is nothing like pensions, health insurance, hazard allowance or compensation for any industrial accidents. if u take a leave u wont be paid for that period, and u can be sacked at will without prior notice. unfortunately, this cheap wages and poor labour laws is the single factor that enabled them become global industrial power. now everybody is saying we should look towards the east for foreign investment. and thats exactly what our govt did. virtually all factories that produces in this country are owned by lebanese, indians or chinese. now u dont expect them to come n implement chevron style of salaries or western type of labour laws. i think we should just adjust to the new fresh air breezing over africa currently, because its going to be here for a very long time. until we learn to stand n produce by ourselves. most nigerian business men will love to go into manufacturing. at least they pay better and create a better conducive environment for employees. but the cost of production n lack of financial support from banks is the major obstacle. this is where our govt can assist. 1 Like |

Babymama1: babymama1, pls go and read about affirmative action. Virtually every developed nation has a preferential program for its ethnic minorities especially in university enrolment. In Germany, 30-35% of admision into gymnasien(preparatory university school) is based on lottery and not merit. Eligibility for lottery is irrespective of primary school performance and such students may not be expelled from gymnasien even if they perform poorly. This is to ensure students from poor socio- economic background have a fair chance of graduating from the school. Special quota is also set aside for children of low income working class. In canada, the canada employment equity act requires employers in federally regulated industries to give preferential treatment to aboriginal people, visible minorities and disables. In most canadian university, people of aboriginal background normally have a lower entrance requirement and are elgible to receive scholarships. We can see from the 2 countries mentioned above that affirmative action is not all about compensation for past discrimination, persecution or exploitation by the ruling class of a culture but a system that promotes fairness and balance in the society. It also adresses existing discrimination. Although, i admit some countries e.g south africa and usa establish affirmative action to atone for past misdeeds. Now coming back home, I want u to get something clear. The inability of ur cousin or niece to secure admission into unity schools has nothing to do with the northern candidates low cut off marks. Stiff competition from her colleagues in enugu, anambra and delta fizzled her out. In short, ur cousin couldn't compete with her peers from the south. Pure and simple. Stop blaming the poor nothern child. Despite the ridiculously low marks for northern candidate in entrance exams into unity schools, they still dont get to fill up their slots. Therefore most of these spaces are re-allocated to southern candidates. So tell me, how were u cheated? U really need to stop behaving like the typical rural white american who blames black people for his failure to secure a fed. govt. job or his son's failure to enter an ivy league school. He simply believes those position were given to blacks who didn't merit it. He ignorantly thinks he was denied because of affirmative action. Concerning education backwardness in the north, passive approach rather than aggressive policy by succesive govt to promote education is the problem n not any preference for islamic education. For example, i see no reason why the medium of instruction in northern schools(from pry to tertiary) cannot be in arabic or hausa. They can equally write their waec or jamb in arabic or hausa. Its not a must u're educated in english. The most important thing is to be educated n stop being ignorant. Finally, u came here and started ranting, cursing, and displaying emotions about a system u dont understand. U even have a poor knowledge of the system u claim u are staying. If truly u're passionate about naija, why dont u ask questions or express ur concerns about the present state of the nation in a civil and matured manner, rather than displaying the typical egoistical american like know-all syndrome on this forum. My piece of advice; dont be hoodwink into accepting any political appointment in the guise of nigerians in diaspora, or else ur own case go worse pass Magnus kpakol. 2 Likes |

Babymama1: Look at those fed school entrance scores again america also has affirmative action. a program that gives preference for minorities n blacks when it comes to college admission, employment n govt contracts. ben carson and so many successful blacks today once benefitted from the scheme. there's nothing wrong in quota system. u cant just neglect a certain region simply because they cant compete. so long as we remain a nation, its important everybody is carried along. whether quota system has been utilized effectively or if it has actually achieved its objectives is another matter entirely. But never u condemn quota system. its a noble idea. 1 Like |
Education / Re: Federal Universities Should Have Tuition Fees - Pro-Chancellors by toluene12: 7:37pm On Jul 06, 2014 |
Personally, I believe govt should stop subsidising university education heavily. The few assistants govt should render are provision of scholarships, grants, non interest students loan, bursary, financial awards to indigent, brilliant or truly deserving students. A lot of youths has no business in the university, and are better off learning vocational and technical skills. As a developing nation the above is what we need, not all these inconsequential paper certificates. Nigeria is seriously losing out on globalisation compared to asian countries and this is because we have a poor value supply-chain network. We just cant convert crude raw materials/natural resources into finished products. We export everything raw, and we import only finished goods. Thus our inability to create jobs and the subsequent high unemployment what we need in this country is more of technical education, vocational training and less of university certificates. even in developed countries like u.k, their govt is placing emphasis on technical education university education should be reserved for those interested in logic, research or innovation. 1 Like |

biafran soul: The way u people support jonathan is irritating n sickening to say the least. @ op, I strongly believe F.G's first step at renovation is to get those trailers off that road. Let there be a fuctioning railway system that connects the port to hinterland. That road transports virtually everything imported and consumed in this country, including fuel. There's need to lessen the pressure on the road and a rail system will do just that. There should be a parking space for trailers and all those tanker drivers should be forced to use it. They should stop packing by the side of the express road. Finally, F.G should force importers to use altenative ports in others coastal areas. Goods destined for southeast and nigerdelta has no business plying that route. They can use calabar, oron, port harcourt or sapele ports. Or else any renovation work is worthless and those trucks will destroy any road reconstruction within 5 yrs even if its world class. 2 Likes |

Justine sacco also twitted something similar and I quote: ' I'm going to a country in Africa and I hope I don't get infected with AIDS.......just joking' The tweet was considered insensitive and she was attacked both online and offline. Despite her sincere apology, she was sacked by her employers- a media company and her appointment with the AIDS agency terminated. There's a responsibility that comes along being a celebrity. U just dont transfer beer parlour gist to social media. That u pour out ur unprocessed and crude thoughts on a faceless forum like nairaland doesn't mean u do the same on sites that reveal identity. Religion / Re: Is Abortion Wrong In Cases Of Rape, Incest Or When The Mother's Life Is At Risk? by toluene12: 5:31pm On Jan 03, 2014 |
@striklymi There's no sentiment in medicine, u do whats is practical to ensure preservation of life. As at today there's no medical technology available that can help save a fetus implanted in the fallopian tube. Maybe tmrw but present medical practice teaches termination of any pregnancy embedded in the fallopian tube. neither the mother nor the doctor has a choice over what to do. not even the anti abortionist. Even the option of the mother giving up her life for the baby does not even arise because the fetus has little to no chance of developing to the point that it could be born alive. The gestational age of viability in the fallopian tube before the tube ruptures is just too short to give the baby any chance of survival outside the mother's baby. Both will simply die. 95% of ectopic pregnancies implant in the fallopian tubes, the remaining 5% implant in the ovary, peritoneum or other abdominal organ. You may have read in the news of a few extremely rare cases in which ectopic pregnancies go to term. There are a few important points to keep in mind when reading these stories. First, these cases usually involve a type of ectopic pregnancy called an "abdominal" pregnancy. In an abdominal pregnancy, the baby is not implanted in the uterus or the fallopian tubes but somewhere else in the abdomen, such as the liver or another organ with a good blood supply. The odds of such a pregnancy occurring and progressing to a point of being viable are less than 1 in a million. Second, although an abdominal ectopic pregnancy could theoretically progress to a point of being able to deliver a live baby, the situation is rare and always extremely risky for the mother's health due to the likelihood of major hemorrhage and blood loss at delivery. Abdominal pregnancies are even more dangerous than ectopic pregnancies in the tubes -- mothers are eight times more likely to die after an abdominal pregnancy than after a tubal pregnancy. there've been only 4 recorded cases of successful abdominal pregnancy worldwide and I've seen only a case of abdominal pregnancy. it was a stillbirth at 26 weeks. the mother was in excruciating pain and we had to do an emergency ex. lap to preserve the mother's life. 2 Likes |
Religion / Re: Is Abortion Wrong In Cases Of Rape, Incest Or When The Mother's Life Is At Risk? by toluene12: 3:49pm On Jan 03, 2014 |
striktlymi: actually, its not as simple as that. the uterus is designed to be the fetal home, not the fallopian tube or peritoneum. the uterus can expand to accomodate the growth of the fetus while the fallopian cant just do that, and this is where the problem lies. in cases of ectopic pregnancy in fallopian tubes the growth of the baby will lead to definite rupture of the tube leading to fatal hemorrhage. in most cases the baby is already dead. there is nothing to save rather than perform exploratory laparotomy, remove the product of conception, repair the fallopian tube if its not damaged or cut it out. the option of saving the baby does not arise rather the focus is no the mother. in cases where the ectopic pregnancy is detected before the rupture, what you do is to milk out the fetus before it causes rupture and preserve the fallopian tube or u give medications that causes degeneration of the fetus without neccessarily performing surgery. i'll discuss other types of ectopic pregnancy and their respective management apart from the fallopian tubes later 1 Like |
Politics / Re: Fashola's Government Is Not As Good As You Think by toluene12: 2:10pm On Jan 02, 2014 |
@uyi iredia sorry to say, but your analogy is flawed, and on this debate I think I go with shymexx Its like u fail to understand the complex and largely inefficient unitary system of govt we operate in nigeria today. The main economic and fiscal policies needed for tranformation comes from abuja. There's very little state govts can do apart from providing basic infrastructure. When it comes to wealth generation and poverty reduction the onus lies with the F.G Lagos issue is just typical of any commercial city in a developing economy, be it mumbai, Rio de janeiro, jakarta, johanesbourg, cairo etc. slums dwell side by side with modern architecture. However, because of massive migration influx over the past decades, lack of urban planning and general lawlessness, lagos has more slums than modern buildings thus earning the name 'beautiful slum'. The truth remains lagos gives more to the federal purse than it receives and with a population of 20 million on a small land mass, there will always be pressure on limited resources and infrastructure. Coupled with the fact that the F.G has largely abandoned lagos, the financial resources needed to transform lagos to a mega city is just beyond what the LSG can afford. Subways, high rise buildings, massive canals, underground cables, complex flyover, efficient transportation system, suburban development and urbanization dont come cheap. Most often, funding for most of these project comes from both the central and municipal govt alongside both local and foreigh investors. Lagos remains nigeria commercial capital and expecting only the LSG to tackle the burden is largely unfair. However, if we insist lagos alone should carry the burden then lagosians should be ready to pay for it. Now I'm not talking about all those monthly dues or rents payed to local govenment touts and thugs. I mean real tax- income tax, property tax, coporate tax etc. How many lagosians household income is above #100,000/month? how many lagosians can part with 35% of his salary as tax? how many of our Lagos big boys can pay 60% income tax? well until then pls lets continue to manage whatever mediocre at best or substandard performance successive LSG gives us. finally, i guess the sacrifice needed to develop mainland might just be too much for people to bear e.g demolition, deportation, relocation etc the reason why focus is on the island. I think the LSG can extend same to other underdeveloped suburbs outside mainland before they all turn to another Ikorodu |

prophecies don't just happen spontaneously, you fast and pray your way into fulfillment of prophecies. God told Abraham that his descendants will be in enslaved for 400 years in a strange land before HE will set them free(Genesis 15:13-14),however it wasn't until the cries and supplication of the Isrealites reached God that he remembered his covenant with Abraham (exodus 2:23-25) The word of God came to Jeremiah and he announced to the people of judah the seventy years of captivity in babylon and the eventual restoration of judah and the destruction of babylon(jeremiah 25: 8-14), yet Daniel pleaded to God in fasting, prayer and petition for the restoration of jerusalem after the 70 yrs had passed. (daniel 9:1-3,15-19); (Ezra 1: 1-2). Therefore, let all beloved enter the year 2014 believing in the prophetic utterances of his prophets and taking action via prayer and fasting for the manisfestation and fulfillment of God's word in our lives. Believe in God and u will be upheld Believe in his prophets and u will prosper. (2 ch 20:20) |
